If you’re over 40, you’ve probably had your fill of fashion rules. You likely grew up following certain style norms: Don’t mix black and brown, no white after Labor Day, and absolutely no mixing prints!

Well, we’re over all the rules and regulations when it comes to style, especially with regard to those guidelines on how you should be dressing at 30, 40, 50, etc. Fashion is all about self-expression, and that includes pairing together whatever colors you choose. Now, designer Ripley Rader is taking on one common outdated fashion “law.”

It’s long been the rule that navy (or any shade of blue) and black shouldn’t be worn together. Even though this “rule” has been debunked over and over again with countless chic ensembles that have combined the two beautifully, it’s still a widely-held belief. But Rader believes in the pairing so much, she even devoted one of her Instagram styling sessions to the topic.

She kicked off the reel by talking about her personal love of the navy/black color combo. “I grew up in the South,” she explained, “and they would always say it looked like a bruise, which I think is funny. But I love it, and I think it’s a really chic combination.”

In the video, she wore a pair of black wide-leg ankle-length pants with a navy turtleneck, a black oversized blazer, and white kicks. For dressier occasions, she demonstrated how to elevate the outfit by changing out the white sneakers for black heeled boots or black patent pumps. The outfit looks simple yet put-together and exudes confidence.

The same can be said for many outfits that have employed the same color pairing. Here are some of our favorites.

From the ruffled navy top down to the black combat boots and everything in between, we are smitten with this fun look!

This outfit screams comfort without losing any style points. The pleated skirt, comfy sweater, and white sneakers are pulled together with a fab Coach belt bag.

These bright blue trousers make for the perfect bold pop of color in this black-and-blue ensemble.

We love a good neutral-colored combo. A caramel-colored sweater draped over a navy top with black trousers and white Veja sneakers looks casual and amazingly chic.

Navy-and-black oversized everything? Especially when you need to bundle up for those cold, dreary winter days? Yes, please!

10 Tiny Hacks To Get Lots Of Sh*t Done Faster https://www.suggest.com/little-hacks-to-check-more-off-to-do-list/2721814/ Mon, 06 Feb 2023 12:30:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2721814 Illustration of someone writing a to-do list surrounded by glasses, candles, and tea

I love checking things off of my to-do list, but sometimes those lists can turn into an unorganized, never-ending mess of chores and errands that ends up making me feel bad about myself till I finally give up and toss it in the recycling bin. If your lists have you feeling overwhelmed, here are 10 tips to expedite your day and make sure those “to-dos” actually get done.

1. Two-Minute Rule

We all have those tasks we avoid doing even though we know they won’t take long. We probably spend longer thinking about doing the thing than it would actually take to do it. If there’s anything on your list that would take two minutes or less to accomplish, do it right away. Don’t even bother writing it down (unless you’re into that). It’ll give you an instant sense of accomplishment.

2. Time Travel

Jump into your DeLorean and fast forward to a time when you’ve completed your to-do list. Okay, we might not have that technology yet—but try imagining how you’ll feel once you’ve finished your tasks and you’re free to enjoy the rest of your day. Feel motivated yet?

3. Schedule Your To-Dos

This one’s pretty self-explanatory: Try assigning specific tasks to a certain time of day. This works best when you already have a pretty normal daily routine in place.

4. Automate

Automate what you can. For instance, if you’re like me and coffee is something your household needs to keep in constant supply, you might consider signing up for a coffee subscription service. Whatever your “thing” may be, automating it makes it one less thing for you to worry about!

5. Ask Yourself Why

Why do I want to look for a new set of knives? Because our knives are old and dull. Why does it matter that our knives are old and dull? Because it means I spend an unnecessary amount of time on dinner prep. If you keep asking and answering this question in regard to each task on your list, you’ll eventually uncover a core value that you hold, which will help you prioritize the task in question.

6. Digital Or Paper?

Figure out which to-do list format works best for you and stick with that. If you know you get sucked into looking at Instagram if you keep your to-do list on your phone, then stick to good ol’ pen and paper. (It may still be best to keep long-term goals in a digital format so they don’t get lost among everyday tasks.)

7. Set A Time Limit

Try setting a time limit to keep yourself focused on the task at hand and get through more of the items on your overall list. You can always add the unfinished task to tomorrow’s list or come back to finish it later. You can also time yourself to get a better idea of how long your tasks take, then see if it’s possible to shorten that time (e.g., cut out time spent scrolling on your phone).

8. Write Your List The Day Before

Visualize tomorrow: What do you need to accomplish? Writing your to-do list the night before can help you organize your thoughts and prioritize what’s most important.

9. Check Your Supplies

If any of your tasks require specific supplies, make sure you have (or buy) them before putting the task on your to-do list. The acquisition of said supplies might need to go on your list before the task itself.

10. Create A ‘To-Don’t’ List

For those who have a hard time concentrating on a single task, keep a running list of things that tend to sidetrack you throughout the day. Put those on a “to-don’t” list to check back on later. Mindfully avoid letting those things distract you and try to cultivate healthy habits, concentrating on the things you want to get done first.

‘I Don’t Want To Be Married To Nobody’s Dusty-Ass Son:’ A Therapist Defends Her ‘Rich Auntie’ Life https://www.suggest.com/aishia-grevenberg-defends-rich-auntie-life/2722175/ Sat, 04 Feb 2023 22:30:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2722175 L: A screengrab of Aishia Grevenberg on TikTok, R: Image of a crossed-out diamond ring

For every decision a woman makes, there’s usually someone to tell her that decision is wrong. It’s 2023 and people are still judging (and passing laws about) what women can and cannot do. If a woman makes the decision not to get married or have kids, her personal choice should be celebrated—not questioned, mocked, or discussed at length.

Therapist Aishia Grevenberg uses her platform to talk about a variety of topics. She often makes posts about dating for pleasure, weaponized incompetence, and toxic relationships, among other subjects. In a recent post, she had the perfect response to a misogynistic podcaster who had some … interesting things to say about the “rich auntie lifestyle.”

The podcaster claimed that the rich auntie life is “an excuse for a woman [who’s] not ready for responsibility or commitment.” Grevenberg responded by laying out her reasoning for the way she lives her life, with many comments commending her.

It’s ridiculous that she even had to make a video explaining her life choices in the first place. But until women can live their lives however they see fit without question, we’ll likely continue feeling the need to defend our decisions.

Grevenberg began her reel by saying, “I’m literally just trying to live my life, my rich auntie life. Let me help you understand what that is.” Her reasons were concise and perfectly understandable.

1. “I Don’t Have Children (Because I Don’t Want Them)”

There are so many reasons a woman might make the deeply personal choice not to have children. Grevenberg got straight to the point: She doesn’t have kids because she doesn’t want to have kids, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have any responsibilities.

Along with being a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist, Grevenberg dedicates time to giving her dog Sage “her best life.” She added that she’s not married because she doesn’t want to be married to “nobody’s dusty-ass son.” Grevenberg then explained that she dates for pleasure (a frequent topic of her posts) rather than for marriage.

2. “I Have A Lot Of Money [And] I Spend It On Me”

Grevenberg said that living a “rich auntie life” is about living for your own happiness: doing whatever you want to do when you want to do it with no apologies. As she put it, “A rich auntie lifestyle is about saying, ‘I have made a deliberate, conscious choice that marriage is not for me and children are not for me. I am for me’ … That’s what a rich auntie is.” We applaud her for knowing what she wants and what she doesn’t want.

This Pro Makeup Artist Created A Liquid Blush That Provides The Perfect ‘Lit-From-Within Glow’ For Mature Skin  https://www.suggest.com/daniel-sandler-watercolour-liquid-blush-overview/2721109/ Thu, 02 Feb 2023 22:30:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2721109 Circular swatches of various Daniel Sandler Watercolour blush colors

Daniel Sandler, also known as the “Patron Saint of Blusher,” is a phenomenal international makeup artist. He started his eponymous makeup line in 2005, and we love the brand for a variety of reasons.

Daniel Sandler Makeup is refreshingly dedicated to inclusivity, both in its marketing and its products. The brand’s website says, “Our makeup is for all ages, genders, skin types, and skin tones.” There’s even a section dedicated to demonstrating their products on mature skin.

Product ingredients are listed (with explanations) right on the brand site, a step toward transparency that can help consumers make more informed decisions. Plus, the brand is 100% cruelty-free and committed to sustainability practices to reduce its environmental impact. What’s not to love?

But if we could only choose one Daniel Sandler item to add to our makeup bags, the Watercolour Liquid Cheek Colour would be our pick.

About their hero product, Sandler said, “I was working on shoots where I needed the makeup to stay in place but I couldn’t find a blusher that ticked all the boxes.

“I wanted something beautifully sheer, easy to blend, but also super water-resistant in lots of shades. I couldn’t find what I wanted even in professional beauty stores, so I decided to make my own.”

For mature skin, liquid blush is often a much better option as opposed to powder blush, which can dry out the skin and settle into fine lines, resulting in a heavy, cakey texture on the face.

Not so with the Watercolour Liquid Cheek Colours. The liquid blush formula easily blends into the skin, providing buildable and long-lasting color (seriously, this stuff is basically bulletproof). It’s lightweight, water-resistant, and hydrating—so you’ll feel comfortable and luminous.

You can pick your perfect shade (we’ve swatched 12 of them below) or customize your own by mixing shades together. They’re available in blush, illuminator, and bronzer shades with matte, shimmer, and satin finishes. They can even be used on the eyes and lips for an extra pop of color.

Swatches of 12 different Daniel Sandler Watercolour blushes and illuminators

Daniel Sandler knows that finding the right shade and learning how to apply liquid blush can be intimidating, especially if you’ve only ever used powder blush. Fortunately, he’s provided a shade finder tool along with a beginner’s guide to help you choose your perfect product and learn how to apply it.

There are even tips on how to apply blush for your face shape. Once you get the hang of applying liquid blush (in no time at all), you may even find it faster, easier, and more flattering than powder blush.

One reviewer said, ”I instantly get the most gorgeous lit-from-within glow that I’ve only seen in professional model photographs, and that’s at age 57. Absolutely wonderful products, all of them!”

You Might Want To Think Again Before Buying Thinx Underwear—Here’s Why They Just Settled A Class-Action Lawsuit https://www.suggest.com/thinx-period-underwear-lawsuit/2720285/ Tue, 31 Jan 2023 12:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2720285 Two pairs of period underwear

Period products have slowly evolved throughout the years, but there are now more options for period care than ever before (yay!), and the Thinx brand had a lot to do with the market’s growth.

Thinx launched their revolutionary period underwear in 2013, followed by their bladder leakage underwear, Speax, in 2015. They seek to make products for periods and incontinence more sustainable, comfortable, and accessible.

However, Thinx has had its fair share of controversy. As The Cut reported, there were allegations of sexual harassment against former CEO Miki Agrawal in 2017 (the case was eventually settled and the complaint withdrawn). There have also been complaints of a toxic work environment.

But apparently, that’s not the only thing that’s toxic. As reported in NPR, Thinx has now settled a class-action lawsuit claiming their underwear contains human-made chemicals called per-and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAs).

There are two types of PFAs, short-chain (containing fewer than eight carbon atoms) and long-chain (containing more than eight carbon atoms, also referred to as “forever chemicals”). The brand has marketed its underwear as organic and non-toxic; however, according to third-party testing, certain varieties of underwear contain short-chain PFAs.

Besides being difficult to break down, PFAs have been linked to a wide range of health issues. According to a November 2020 study published in Environmental Research, cancers, thyroid problems, hormone disruption, infertility, and cardiovascular disease are among the issues related to PFA exposure.

Thinx has denied that PFAs were intentionally added to their products, telling NPR, “The settlement is not an admission of guilt or wrongdoing by Thinx.” Thinx also pledged to take measures to ensure PFAs aren’t intentionally added at any stage of production.

The settlement covers underwear bought between November 12, 2016, and November 28, 2022. Consumers who purchased underwear from Thinx between those dates may be entitled to financial compensation and can submit a claim here.

There are a few alternative brands if you’re rethinking Thinx, but some of these brands have also come under scrutiny. According to ClassAction.org, Knix was faced with a class-action lawsuit in April 2022 over their products containing PFAs.

Meanwhile, Mamavation, a source that claims to conduct “eco-wellness product investigations for moms,” found that Cora products also contained PFAs. But in that case, while the number of PFAs found in Cora underwear was detectable, it was likely the result of contamination rather than having been intentionally added. Still, it’s worth keeping in mind when deciding whether or not to purchase.

On the other hand, The Period Company’s website claims that third-party testing found their fabric to be free of PFAs. On their product pages, they write, “We are proud to be one of the few period underwear brands that do not use any toxins in our products, because who wants chemicals near the most sensitive part of their body? Not us. Or you.”

Their high-waisted heavy-period underwear is affordable and fantastic for even your heaviest flow. They’re also ideal for women going through perimenopause and postpartum.

Their period sleep shorts are made with organic cotton and built-in five-layer padding to provide a leakproof night’s sleep. We also love the brand’s inclusive sizing—from XS to 6X.

Over 40? This Genius Eyeshadow Hack Will Create A Natural Looking Smokey Eye In Seconds https://www.suggest.com/applying-eyeshadow-over-40-spoon-technique/2720040/ Sun, 29 Jan 2023 20:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2720040 A closeup on a woman having eyeshadow applied

There is an undeniable power to makeup. The combination of the right products and techniques can not only enhance our features, but at times even transform them (a makeup facelift anyone?).

As we age, not only do we need to be cognizant of finding products for changing skin, but our technique needs to be tweaked as well.

In particular, our eyeshadow application is important to modify. For various reasons, the skin around the eyes begins to sag. To combat that, our eyeshadow needs to go a bit higher on the brow bone so it can be seen.

Kelly Gropp, a 40+ influencer, demonstrated an easy hack for this very problem using a humble spoon. Plus, if you have hooded eyes or are a novice at eyeshadow, this tip is a helpful trick too.

While it might feel unnatural at first to apply eyeshadow so high on your brow bone, the point of the spoon technique is to help train yourself to do just that. Whatever color palette you choose to use, pick your medium-tone shade and gently follow the curve of the spoon with a fluffy eyeshadow brush.

To achieve a gradient, natural smoky look, Groop then applies a lighter shade in the inner corner of the eyelid (a great tip to help makes your eyes look wider and more awake), and a darker shade on the outside corner using the smaller end of her dual-sided eyeshadow brush. The size and density of the hairs on this brush make it easier to pack on the color just where you want it.

The trick to any eyeshadow look is all about blending, which Gropp demonstrates. Flipping back over to the fluffy end of her brush, she starts with small circular movements around the end corners and then sweeps the brush back and forth along the brow bone.

And that’s it! The final result is stunning but still natural. You could certainly follow up with eyeliner and of course, a generous swipe of mascara.

If you’re looking to achieve this look at home, we love this affordable dual-ended eyeshadow brush from JOAH and the cult-classic Urban Decay Naked2 Basics eyeshadow palette that features six neutral shades that look great on all skin tones (and is the perfect size for traveling).

Gropp ends the video by saying, “I love showing women over 40 how they can love their makeup again.” Make sure to give her a follow for tons of mature makeup tips.

Don’t Wash Your Produce First: These 6 Bad Refrigerator Habits Could Be Costing You (Or Even Make You Sick) https://www.suggest.com/refrigerator-storage-mistakes/2719481/ Sat, 28 Jan 2023 14:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2719481 An open refrigerator with food inside

Some tasks seem so simple that we don’t even think twice about them. Yet sometimes seemingly innocent behaviors, especially when it comes to things we consume, could have negative consequences. I mean, are you also guilty of re-heating your coffee in the microwave? (Because I am!)

From potentially dangerous mistakes with your slow cooker to need-to-knows about storing your butter on the counter, every part of the process when it comes to storing and cooking food is important. And this notion even applies to how (and where) food is stored in the fridge.

Storing food in the wrong containers, at the wrong temp, or in the wrong spot might result in spoiled food and wasted money, but it could also be detrimental to your health. Here are some of the most common mistakes.

1. Washing Produce Before Storing

It makes sense you’d want to wash your produce as soon as possible. It can be convenient to just grab your veggies or fruit out of the fridge and go, but doing so could potentially lead to sickness.

Excess moisture could lead to bacterial growth which in turn could lead to illness.

Another pro to waiting to rinse? It may help preserve any water-soluble vitamins the produce contains.

2. Setting The Wrong Temperature

It’s important to keep your fridge temperature at 40°F and your freezer at 0°F to keep food out of the “danger zone” (41-135°F). Some experts even say to keep the temperature at 37°F because bacteria can start to grow above 40°F.

Keeping your perishable food at the recommended temperature is important to prevent bacteria from growing, but some reports have shown that built-in refrigerator thermometers can be off by up to five degrees.

An easy (and cheap) solution is simply purchasing a fridge thermometer, like this digital and magnetic option from Vouloir

3. Using The Wrong Containers

Sorry mom, but storing those leftovers in an old Country Crock container isn’t the best idea as many plastic containers can’t provide an air-tight seal. What’s more, they might contain harmful “forever chemicals” or PFAs.

By far the safest and most eco-friendly containers to use are glass containers. Mason jars can be great for things like berries, while investing in larger containers are perfect for leftovers.

We like this 24-piece set that features airtight lids that even contain a steam release valve.

4. Not Knowing Your Produce Well Enough

You might know there are certain fruits and vegetables that fare better at room temperature. Tomatoes, lemons, and garlic are just a few whose taste and texture can be negatively impacted by cooler temps.

But if you are indiscriminately tossing your weekly grocery haul into the produce drawer, you may be inadvertently storing produce together that can cause one to spoil others quickly. Ethylene-admitting produce, like apples, peppers, and cantaloupe, can impact ethylene-sensitive produce such as asparagus, cucumbers, and lettuce.

While this effect is quicker when stored together at room temperature, it applies to refrigerated veggies and fruit as well.

5. Storing Your Milk In The Refrigerator Door

Your refrigerator door opens and closes several times a day. It’s best to keep any dairy, meat, or other perishable foods or drinks on the shelves of the fridge. (We’ll tell you where in the next section.)

So, what’s okay to store in the fridge door? Condiments, soda, salad dressing, and juice should all be fine in the door.

6. Placing Food On The Wrong Shelf

It actually does matter where you put your food in the fridge. Cooked foods should be reserved for the top shelf of the fridge. The second shelf should store all of your cheeses, eggs, yogurt, and other dairy products. And your bottom shelf should be where the raw food goes—chicken, beef, fish, etc.

The bottom shelf is the coldest, plus you’ll lower your chances of food contamination with raw food on the bottom shelf. The produce drawer should store, you guessed it, your (unwashed) produce.

Shoppers Say Their Nails Are ‘Healthier Than They’ve Been In Years’ Thanks To This Highly-Rated Product https://www.suggest.com/butter-london-horse-power-basecoat-overview/2719138/ Thu, 26 Jan 2023 21:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2719138 Woman's hands showcasing long, healthy natural nails

Nail health is really important, and there are some telltale signs your nails aren’t as healthy as they could be. Brittle, peeling, and weak nails aren’t just unsightly, they could be signs of an underlying health issue.

But if your nails are weak due to genetics, frequent manis, or simply aging in general, there’s something you can do about it.

We’ve told you about butter LONDON products before: The Melt Away Cuticle Exfoliator and Sheer Wisdom Nail Tinted Moisturizer both have rave reviews. But they also have a serious workhorse product that can help restore your nail health.

This powerhouse of a basecoat promises healthier-looking nails. Formulated with horsetail extract, biotin, vitamin B, and calcium, the Horse Power Nail Rescue Basecoat promotes healthy nail growth while also protecting your nails from future damage. The clear coating helps prevent breakage and nail staining as it strengthens your nails.

The key ingredient, horsetail extract, is an herbal remedy that dates back to ancient Greek and has historically been used for minor wounds and burns. Containing antioxidants and silica (a natural compound found in our tissue), current research suggests horsetail can support nail health.

The cruelty-free Horse Power Nail Rescue Basecoat is free from parabens, xylene, formaldehyde, and gluten. With consistent use, the brand says it can help repair seriously damaged nails in just eight weeks.

“I know this product isn’t advertised for nail biting, but it worked great for me and my nails are the healthiest they have ever been,” one reviewer noted. “Definitely helped strengthen my nails from the 20 years of biting and abuse I’ve put them through.”

“My nails were a mess after using acrylic for years,” another happy shopper noted. “I could not find a product to stop my nails from splitting and breaking. Butter was my answer!! My nails are growing and no more splitting and breakage … Worth every penny!!!!”

Additionally, if you struggle with yellowing nails, the brand’s Mellow The Yellow Nail Brightening Treatment can be another great addition to improving your nail health.

With vitamin E and lemon extract, the natural formula is designed to gently exfoliate nails while the sheer coverage helps improve nail appearance during the healing process.

“My nails are brighter, yellow tint has gone away and they look so much healthier,” said one buyer. “Sheer color great for both men and women. Noticeable results after the [first] week. Highly recommended.”

Whether you want to rock natural healthy nails or keep your nails strong while you apply the nail application you love, butter LONDON has a specialized treatment to help achieve your goals.

Suffering From Inflammatory Bowel Disease? Study Suggests This ‘Invisible’ Ingredient Might Be To Blame https://www.suggest.com/inflammatory-bowel-disease-red-food-dye-study/2717168/ Wed, 25 Jan 2023 12:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2717168 Midlife woman sitting on couch holding her stomach

Many midlife American women suffer from gastrointestinal (GI) issues. In fact, more women than men in the United States suffer from certain gut problems, with some studies suggesting that women’s GI systems behave differently partly because of “sex-related features in the brain.”

Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, collectively referred to as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), are characterized by inflammation of the GI tract. Common symptoms include abdominal pain, cramping, persistent diarrhea, weight loss, and fatigue.

Now, a December 2022 study published in Nature Communications claims there’s a common food ingredient in the United States that might trigger IBD.

This Common Food Dye Could Be The Culprit

While the causes of IBD haven’t yet been pinned down, possible culprits include genetic factors, dysregulated immune responses, and environmental factors. One environmental factor, in particular, is the typical American diet: red and processed meats, lack of fiber, sugar—and red food dye.

Allura Red (AR) food dye, also known as FD&C Red 40 and Food Red 17, is a synthetic dye made from petroleum. It’s long been a commonly used ingredient in the American diet. It shows up in foods like cereal, pastries, fruit bars, dairy products, condiments, candy, soft drinks, and more.

It’s an FDA-approved dye for food, drugs, and cosmetics (even cosmetics meant to be used around the eye area). Research suggests it’s one of, if not the most widely-used artificial food dye in grocery store items.

You may have heard of the potential link between red food dye and ADHD in some children. Red Dye No. 2 was even banned in the U.S. in 1976 after a Russian study linked it to cancer, a connection that’s never been fully proven or disproven.

However, research regarding AR’s effect on gut health has been lacking in recent years. This new study has changed that, finding evidence of a link between the two.

The Potential Dangers Of Allura Red

The study, conducted by McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, found that Allura Red can cause inflammation and increase serotonin in the gut (leading to colitis). It can also affect certain allergies, immune disorders, and behavioral problems in children.

Senior author Waliul Khan, Ph.D., along with a team of researchers, studied the effects of common food colorants (including AR) on serotonin production in mice. The mice were then split into three different groups and fed either a standard diet, a diet that included AR every day, or a diet that included AR once a week.

Following 12 weeks of these diets plus a buffer week afterward, the mice were exposed to a chemical to induce colitis. The mice that only consumed AR once a week didn’t appear to have an increased susceptibility to colitis, but the ones who consumed AR on a daily basis developed mild colitis. This led to worsened intestinal nutrient absorption along with a boost in serotonin levels.

Furthermore, the researchers did a similar study on four-week-old mice and found that early AR exposure induced low-level colonic inflammation.

As Dr. Khan told Science Daily, “What we have found is striking and alarming, as this common synthetic food dye is a possible dietary trigger for IBD. This research is a significant advance in alerting the public on the potential harms of food dyes that we consume daily.”

It’s important to note these foods do not cause IBD but exacerbate IBD symptoms. More research with human subjects at clinical and experimental levels is needed to further explore the link between IBD and Allura Red food dye.

If you suffer from GI issues, your healthcare provider can help you make decisions about lifestyle changes.

However, while some GI issues can be mitigated by certain foods and drinks, IBD is a serious medical condition. You should consult your healthcare team to help you decide the best action plan for you.

I Am Not Too Old For This Outfit—Why Are Other Women Judging Me So Harshly? https://www.suggest.com/dressing-your-age-inspiring-video/2717439/ Tue, 24 Jan 2023 22:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2717439 Influencer Rachel Peru discusses ageism coming from other women

It’s no secret that women are judged for what they wear. And as women get older, the “rules” seem to become ever more stringent. Women are expected to “act their age” and adhere to a milder, primmer aesthetic—it’s ageism at its worst.

But Rachel Peru is not having it. The model, influencer, and podcast host recently shared an Instagram post featuring a video for which she received some pretty nasty responses. And she’s a model of how to respond when comments get ugly.

In the post, she played a reel she had previously posted on Facebook in which she shared her outfit for going out on a Friday night. She looked fabulous in a longline bralette underneath a black velvet blazer, pants from Zara, and Karen Millen nude pumps.

When she posted the outfit video online, she received hundreds of negative, ageist comments including some real gems: ”Don’t like the bra look for her age,” followed by, “Will someone give Nan her medication, she’s playing dress up again.” And of course the favorite of age-shamers, “[She’s] too old for this outfit.”

It’s awful when those sorts of comments come from men, but it’s not particularly unexpected. What really bothered Peru was that most of the negative comments on Facebook seemed to come from other women.

“I’m thick-skinned, and I certainly don’t get dressed in the morning to please others,” she said. But she asked that women stop shaming other women. “Women do not have to conform to any dress code because of their age, and we shouldn’t let other women stigmatize or shame us because we want to dress in a different way.”

Perhaps Peru shouldn’t have been so surprised by her fellow female shamers. Dr. Joyce Benenson, a lecturer in human evolutionary biology at Harvard University has studied competition and judgment among women for more than three decades, and her studies show that women are hard-wired for this behavior.

“Within the female community, girls reduce competition by demanding equality and punishing those who openly attempt to attain more than others,” Benenson wrote in a 2013 study published in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B. Sounds a bit like the plot of Mean Girls, doesn’t it?

But just because we may be predisposed to mean-girl ways doesn’t mean we can’t take a step back, think before we act (or comment), and over time change our behavior. Several kind commenters on Peru’s post proved it’s possible.

One commenter said, “Stunning outfit. Rachel you look amazing.” While another simply said, “Wow, you look fab.”

Women Share How Their Baby Boomer Parents Set Them Up For Relationships With Man-Children https://www.suggest.com/baby-boomers-raised-man-child-partners/2716548/ Sat, 21 Jan 2023 20:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2716548 Illustration of woman holding baby and vacuuming while man sits on couch

During her 2018 book tour for Becoming, former First Lady Michelle Obama admitted that as women, we actually can’t “have it all,” at least not all at once.

And while some women may have felt relief from the pressure of trying (and oftentimes failing) to have it all, others were likely confused. We’ve been told for decades by our parents and by society that we’d be able to simultaneously have a family, a successful career, a well-kept home, etc.

But while having it all is nice to think about in theory, it hasn’t panned out quite the way we grew up believing it would. If the last few years have shown us anything, it’s that the bulk of the housework, childcare, and planning/organization typically falls to women. And this is in spite of women making strides in the professional realm as well.

So why is there such a stark imbalance?

Did Baby Boomers Equip Their Sons To Be Married To Successful Women?

A Reddit post from r/TwoXChromosomes claims that Baby Boomers may have accidentally raised their sons to be “man-children” while raising their daughters to be career-oriented women.

The post was based on a tweet from @jfitzgeraldmd that read, “Baby boomers did a pretty good job teaching their millennial daughters that they could be anything they wanted to be and a pretty terrible job of preparing their sons for what that would mean for them as husbands and fathers.”

Equally applicable to Gen X as to millennials, the concept basically states that older generations didn’t sufficiently prepare their sons to take on more responsibilities within the home as more women entered the workforce and therefore had less time and energy to handle the domestic duties on their own.

This isn’t meant to be a blanket statement, however. There are certainly men who’ve stepped up to the plate and become team players alongside their partners. In regards to my own husband, we both do household work, we both take care of our child, and I’m eternally grateful my husband’s parents raised a capable, caring, thoughtful human.

However, reading through the responses, it seems many women haven’t had the same experience.

Redditors Chime In

“Over the past 100 years we’ve completely changed the life expectations for women and what it means to be a woman and we’ve done little to nothing to change the expectations of men or what it means to be a man,” one user wrote. “Some of that work is starting but it’s long overdue.”

This concept was illustrated by a single mom who wrote, “[I] keep trying to find a guy to date who doesn’t seem like one extra dependent … but [I’m] still single seven years later. If a man can’t bring as much as he takes, and yes that means cleaning up after himself, why would I want to add that to my already full plate?! I already juggle work and kids! Come back when you have adulting skills and are ready to do half the work.”

Another user commented how her dad is guilty as charged. “My dad certainly fits this model, though my brother miraculously never followed suit,” they wrote. “Brother and his wife now have two kids, and my dad is simply beside himself witnessing how hands-on my brother is as a father. Constant little comments like, ‘in my day, dads were expected to go back to work right away,’ and my personal favorite, ‘in my day, dads didn’t change diapers!'”

Another commenter shared a Gloria Steinem quote that resonated with many: “Though we have the courage to raise our daughters more like our sons, we’ve rarely had the courage to raise our sons like our daughters.”

What Can Be Done?

Nowadays, it’s more common for families to instruct their sons to become more aware of their emotions and feelings, teach them how to cook and clean, and even allow them to play with toys traditionally aimed toward girls, helping prepare them for a future when they’ll to take on more responsibilities around the home.

However, we still hold out hope for the less responsible male partners of Gen X and millennial women to start lending more of a helping hand. Weaponized incompetence is becoming a more widely-recognized phenomenon, and an increasing number of women have begun to set boundaries when they encounter it.

Still, as one frustrated Redditor pointed out, “The onus of educating late Gen X to early Gen Z men is now falling on their female peers, to everyone’s frustration. And despite the rational discourse being presented, there’s still a faction of them who refuse to listen and consider a woman’s POV on the topic of women, because poor behavior was modeled for them early on.”

Struggling With Procrastination? This Expert-Developed Technique Can Help You Accomplish More Without Experiencing Burnout https://www.suggest.com/pomodoro-method-for-time-management/2715595/ Thu, 19 Jan 2023 12:35:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2715595 Various objects pertaining to the Pomodoro Method, including a to-do list and a tomato timer

Did you make a lofty list of resolutions or goals you wanted to achieve in preparation for the beginning of the year? I’m no different, but as the weeks have rolled by, I’ve realized (as I have every year) that the new year isn’t some magical restart. We are still just ourselves, living our regular lives.

To achieve our goals or to even just get started on our to-do lists, we need to prioritize. Time management is something many of us struggle with. We want to be productive, but without the right tools, we can fall right back into our less-than-ideal routines.

If you’re a human being, you probably struggle with procrastination or focusing your attention when you want to get things done—or you might just be overwhelmed with your daily tasks. Whatever the case, here’s an easy, clever, time-tested method to help you better manage your time.

The Pomodoro Technique was developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late ’80s when he was just a student. When he realized he wasn’t getting enough done in his study sessions, he grabbed a timer, which happened to be a tomato-shaped kitchen timer (pomodoro is Italian for tomato), and set it for a short amount of time.

After a bit of trial and error, he found that 25-minute focused work sessions separated by short breaks effectively helped him accomplish more. He’s since written a book on the method and now works as a consultant with top companies around the world.

How To Follow The Pomodoro Technique

  1. Choose a task.
  2. Set a timer for 25 minutes.
  3. Focus on the task until the timer goes off.
  4. Take a short break (two to five minutes).
  5. Repeat four times (these bursts of productivity are called pomodoros).
  6. Take a longer break after four work sessions (15-30 minutes).

This method helps by breaking up your tasks into smaller segments, keeping you from feeling overwhelmed by something that feels too large or unmanageable.

I’ve adopted the technique for writing this article, and so far, I’ve noticed that I do feel more focused than normal. Knowing that I have a break coming up has helped me stay concentrated on the task at hand and not on what else I could be doing.

The Pomodoro Technique can also help stave off mental fatigue. Some people push through their tasks just to get them done, even if they’re stressed and tired and the work isn’t their best. This method is likely to improve the quality of your work while ensuring you don’t get burned out.

Other benefits include breaking the habit of multitasking, improving motivation, and increasing your willpower.

Whatever your goals, to-do lists, or resolutions entail, the Pomodoro Technique might be just the thing you need to start off on the right foot.

How A Humble Lip Balm Can Fix Messy Makeup After A Long Day https://www.suggest.com/on-the-go-makeup-touch-up-tips/2715645/ Tue, 17 Jan 2023 22:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2715645 A blond woman holds a stick of lip balm

During pandemic times, video meetings became the norm, and for many of us virtual is our new way of life at work. And with our faces framed and cropped in the manner of a newscaster every day, makeup has become increasingly important (for some of us—if you abstain, power to you!).

Thankfully, makeup tutorials seem to have increased right alongside the rise in makeup-wearing.

Celebrity makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes has led the charge in minimal but impactful makeup ideas. She also shares tricks of the trade, and this one, which helps extend the life of your makeup look without washing your face and starting from scratch, is particularly genius. And it doesn’t require a full makeup bag to accomplish.

Now that we actually have places to go after work, repurposing our daytime makeup is key for saving time and minimizing hassle. Hughes’ technique requires just a few basic makeup staples that easily fit in your handbag, plus lip balm and your fingertips.

“I want to paint a picture for you,” she says. “The picture is your eyeshadow is creased, your foundation’s kinda greasy and oily-looking, your lipstick kinda wore away and there’s just not much definition in the face. You are out and about and you need to touch this up quickly.”

We’ve all been there. She recommends taking these next steps to revive your makeup, starting with clean, dry hands.

1. Fingers

Rub your hands together to warm them up, then gently swipe and/or dab under the eyes to remove any excess mascara or eyeshadow that may have fallen off. Gently massage the eyelids to smooth the eyeshadow and blend any creasing that may have formed. You might lose some makeup during this part, she says, but that’s okay.

2. Lip Balm

If you have dry skin, then this part is for you. But if you run oily, you might want to skip. Using a clear lip balm, add a little bit of the product to your fingertips and apply it on dull, dry, or flaky patches of skin to help rehydrate.

3. Concealer

Most of us carry around a tube of concealer, so grab that and add some dots of the product anywhere you could benefit from some coverage. Gently dab and blend with your fingertips. The key with this step is to apply lightly, so it doesn’t get cakey or uneven.

4. Lip Liner

Most makeup-wearers also typically carry around some lip product. And if you have to choose between liner and lipstick, go with the lip liner. After blending what lip color you have left with the lip balm, you can use it to redefine your lips.

5. Lipstick

If you’re willing to make room for another item, make it a tube of lipstick. You can add a little color to your lips, blend the product with your fingertips, and then get double duty out of the product by dabbing what remains on your cheeks.

6. Powder

Powder is another product that many of us carry, and it’s nice to have when you’re feeling a little sweaty and overly shiny. Dab it on anywhere that’s too shiny for your liking and you’re good to go!

Stop Caring About Unimportant BS With These 4 Simple Tips https://www.suggest.com/unbothered-tips-barb-schmidt/2714302/ Tue, 17 Jan 2023 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2714302 A woman smirking and looking confident

Since the pandemic first hit three years ago, it seems like life stresses have only continued to stack year after year. News headlines, toxic social media posts, and times of uncertainty just added to the daily stresses life can already bring.

All that negativity can take its toll on both our emotional and physical health. Luckily, there are small changes we can make to help turn the tide when it feels like it’s all too much.

Author and meditation teacher Barb Schmidt and her daughter, Michelle Maros, are dedicated to sharing wellness advice on their social media accounts and through their nonprofit Peaceful Mind Peaceful Life.

Starting the new year right, the duo shared a video detailing “4 Tips For Becoming Unbothered,” and it’s definitely advice we can get behind.

1. Not Everything Needs An Emotional Reaction

Responding emotionally to everything in your life can be exhausting. If you feel like other people’s actions are affecting your emotional state, it could benefit you to take a step back before responding.

Recognizing patterns and triggers can take time, but realizing that other people’s actions don’t have to change your mental state is empowering. Barb advised to “reclaim your power” by not allowing other people’s choices to affect your experience.

2. Don’t Make Assumptions

The second tip from the mother-daughter team is to stop making assumptions. Michelle said, “I’ve saved myself a lot of unnecessary stress by working up the courage to ask direct questions instead of making assumptions.”

This can be difficult, especially for those who hate confrontation. However, asking open-ended, friendly, clarifying questions (hopefully) shouldn’t end in conflict.

3. Avoid Personalizing What Other People Do

If someone is disrespectful of you or your time, try to keep in mind that it has more to do with them than with you. Taking things too personally can become damaging to your self-esteem.

Of course, there’s a balance—if the person intended to belittle or hurt you, then prioritize time away from that person. But if you notice you get your feelings hurt regularly by different people, it could mean you’re taking things too personally on a deeper level. Be sure to set boundaries with people who are constantly taking advantage of you.

4. Know Your Limits

Hunger, anger, loneliness, and tiredness can all contribute to becoming more easily triggered or annoyed, according to the pair. Knowing when you need to recharge and take some “me” time is vital for your mental health and for your relationships.

Becoming “unbothered” in the new year doesn’t mean disconnecting or ghosting other people, but it does mean prioritizing your mental health. Here’s to becoming more at peace in 2023!

If You Loved Moon Boots As A Kid, You’ll Be Happy To Know The Grown-Up Versions Are Just As Fun https://www.suggest.com/modern-colorful-moon-boots-for-adults/2714953/ Mon, 16 Jan 2023 21:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2714953 A pair of silver and a pair of rainbow Moon Boots

Remember Moon Boots?! If you’re drawing a blank, they’re the puffy, space exploration-inspired snow boots that were popular throughout the ’70s and ’80s. Giancarlo Zanatta, an Italian entrepreneur, was inspired by the Apollo 11 moon landing and fashioned his footwear after the boots worn on that mission by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

These boots have been an off-and-on trend for decades, thanks to their legendary look and functionality. They’re perfect for hitting the slopes and partaking in après-ski activities, but they’re also great as just an everyday boot when the weather gets chilly.

I loved my rainbow Moon Boots when I was a kid and wore them constantly. Now as an adult, I still have a very similar pair of gray Moon Boots.

While Moon Boots never really went anywhere, and they’ve been a constant for many who live in colder temps, they’ve recently made their way back onto the fashion scene. Celebs from Mariah Carey to Dua Lipa have been spotted wearing them, while major designers like Gucci and Prada have come up with their own spins on the style.

These modern iterations are available in every imaginable color, style, and fabric. Here are a few of our favorites.

Available in silver or platinum, these original Moon Boots are nothing less than iconic. With a cushioned footbed, rubber outsole, and round toe, these boots are comfy and bold. (Note that it’s best to size up because these boots tend to run smaller than traditional size scales.)

These gold metallic Moon Boots are insulated for warmth and feature full-length wraparound lacing for stability. The rubber soles provide even more support, and the soft lining allows for breathability and molds to your foot for extra comfort. These boots are great for their original purpose, playing in the snow, but are also sure to make a fashion statement.

We’re all about fuzzy, warm, cozy boots in the winter, and these Moon Boot-esque kicks by Steve Madden fit the bill. Along with faux fur and microsuede uppers, these boots also have lace-up closures and rubber outsoles.

Be still my heart! Last but CERTAINLY not least are these rainbow lace-up Moon Boots, aka the boots of every ’80s kid’s dreams. Walk down memory lane in style with gorgeous rainbow striping on the sides and classic logo lettering on the heels. They’re the perfect blend of trendiness and nostalgia and are sure to give you that feeling of being the coolest kid in school.

Herringbone Highlights Are The Perfect (And Trending) Way To Embrace Your Gray Hair https://www.suggest.com/herringbone-highlights-gray-hair/2714809/ Sun, 15 Jan 2023 21:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2714809 Examples of herringbone highlights on graying hair

The days of scrambling to cover up gray hairs as soon as they appear (hopefully) seem to be coming to an end. We’re totally here for embracing our natural beauty—but that doesn’t mean the transition will come easily. If you’ve spent a lot of time and money covering up your grays, quitting the dye cold turkey can be tough.

But there are methods of making the transition that can make it less stark or awkward. Some women turn to hair extensions to help with the change, while others go for a big chop to start afresh.

Yet another technique can assist in the shift to gray hair by making your changing color appear more natural, gradual, and blended. They’re called herringbone highlights, and they’re quickly becoming one of the biggest hair trends of 2023.

Herringbone highlights help you embrace your natural silver streaks by incorporating them into your natural hair color. Having a lighter shade of brown or blonde hair can be helpful for making herringbone highlights look even more seamless, but it’s not necessary.

If you have lighter hair, incorporating both warm and cool highlights in addition to your natural gray will help blend it all together, so even when your color grows out a bit, it won’t look as noticeable.

If you have darker hair, you’ll probably want to stick with only cool highlights, aiming to achieve a final shade that is similar to your natural grays. Also, being more sporadic than heavy-handed with the highlights will achieve a more natural look.

Most hairstylists and colorists will recognize what you want if you ask for herringbone highlights. But if they don’t, request highlights that blend in with your natural gray. Specify that you want your highlights spread throughout the hair in an irregular pattern to mimic natural gray coloring patterns.

Keep in mind that the point of this technique isn’t to cover up your gray hair. Your silvers will be the star of the show because it’s high time we start to celebrate aging and all that it entails.

Attention Midlife Women: This ‘Aggressive’ Exercise Just May Be The Key To Improving Your Physical And Mental Wellbeing https://www.suggest.com/midlife-women-boxing-benefits/2713146/ Wed, 11 Jan 2023 11:25:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2713146 a woman with white hair punches towards the camera

Girls are often raised to be polite, quiet, and sweet. As they become adults, pent-up emotions and aggression can become difficult to deal with. Hormonal changes often exacerbate the issue: menopausal rage anyone?

And because it often doesn’t feel OK to be anything other than “ladylike,” unhealthy coping strategies can plague women in midlife—impulsive spending, rumination, and drug and alcohol abuse are just a few ways in which women avoid uncomfortable emotions.

Exercise is a well-known prescription for mental and physical health, especially as we age. But we also might feel we need to be gentler with ourselves and stick to walking or light stretching as we get older—a medical professional (or mother-in-law) may even have told us as much.

But middle-aged women around the world are showing that a little aggression is alright, and even can be downright therapeutic for our bodies and brains.

Catharsis Through Punches And Hooks

Humans of New York profiled a woman named Detra in the summer of 2022. Her boxing coach is a perfect example of how sometimes trainers do double duty as therapists.

She arrived at the gym one day upset about an interaction with her husband, whom she described as psychologically abusive. Her coach, Martin Snow (who has also appeared on Real Housewives Of New York), insisted that every time she threw a cross she should say, “Fuck that shit.”

(11/15) “I’d always head straight to the gym after my shift at Starbucks. Martin trained me for free the entire time I…

Posted by Humans of New York on Thursday, June 9, 2022

She was uncomfortable with the rough language at first. But with each cross, Martin encouraged her to say the phrase louder. She complied, and the exercise became about much more than the interaction with her husband.

“The psychological abuse in the marriage. The sexual abuse as a child. All the guilt I’d been made to feel, all the shame. Fuck. That. Shit. It was wrong,” she told Humans Of New York. “I’ve known it was wrong my whole life. But I never defended myself. Or if I tried, it was: ‘Get back in your place.’ But now I was doing something. I was fighting back. At the end of the day when I walked out the door, I felt relieved of so much pain.”

Detra is far from the only midlife woman using boxing as a therapeutic tool. Forty-something abuse survivor and writer Alexis Strum’s therapist suggested she take up boxing. And although she said she was stunned by the recommendation, she knew she had to do something about the rage eating her up inside.

RELATED: Trauma-Induced Loneliness Is An Invisible Epidemic Among Midlife Women

So she followed her therapist’s advice and said that while boxing got her in amazing physical shape, her mind has become more fit as well. “I felt exhilarated, high on endorphins,” Strum wrote in The Independent. “I had never sweated so much, not even during a two-hour Zumbathon or a 10k run. Not even during childbirth,” she wrote about her first boxing class.

“The silence in my head was a liberation. There was no space to think, only to count—1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4—as I worked my way through the combination of punches and slips. In a world where all the windows in our heads are permanently open and the lure of the scroll is constant, it was a relief to finally switch my brain off. I was entirely present.”

Strum also noted that the “in the moment” nature of boxing stimulates different parts of the brain and helps build and maintain hand-eye coordination and build strength.

Should You Get Hooked On Boxing?

Boxing trains you to focus, strategize, and coordinate your mind and body. It improves cardiovascular fitness, tones and sculpts muscles, and increases strength. Combined with the mental perks, boxing has a whole lot to offer, especially for midlife women.

It may seem extremely intimidating to walk into a boxing gym, but many women say the camaraderie they feel in the sport is also an important benefit, saying they feel included and accepted even as beginners.

Always consult your doctor before starting any exercise routine—perhaps especially with boxing since the risks include a punch in the nose. But if you’re looking for a new exercise, boxing may be just the thing to try in midlife and beyond.

Cartoon Nails Are A Viral Nail Trend Influenced By This ’50s Counter Culture Art Movement—And They’re Easy To DIY https://www.suggest.com/cartoon-pop-art-nails-diy/2712128/ Sun, 08 Jan 2023 20:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2712128 Side by side images of the cartoon nails trend inspired by pop art

Nail art has come a long way since the early 2000s—basic designs like polka dots, flowers, and minimalistic styles are cute (and stylish), but artists can get technical and intricate in their nail designs these days.

Nail artists, like all artists, draw inspiration from the things around them—nature, fashion, history, etc. Designs can be as simple as a few gold accents or as complex as a stunning galaxy. And they all somehow fit on a fingernail.

Recently, cartoon nails have gone viral on social media. The style is heavily influenced by pop art, a counter-culture style that dates back to the ‘50s and ’60s. You might associate the movement with Andy Warhol, but it’s much bigger than one artist.

Pop artists rebelled against the traditional art world and ushered in a new era of mass-produced, brightly-colored, accessible, and witty popular art. These artists drew inspiration from advertising, Hollywood, and comic books, repurposing easily-recognized images and making them even more iconic.

RELATED: This Nail Concealer That Keeps Selling Out On Repeat Is Finally Back In Stock—Why It’s So Popular

Although at the time the movement wasn’t taken seriously, especially by the traditional art world, it has become one of the most recognizable art movements of the 20th century.

How Are Nail Artists Using Pop Art?

Pop nail art often uses bold and bright color palettes along with a two-dimensional effect. The most common iteration of the trend involves a surprisingly simple outlining and highlighting technique. The effect gives a two-dimensional look as if the nails have jumped right out of a comic book.

Color options are infinite, from brights and neon shades to more subtle pastels. The look is versatile and works with short or long nails, in any shape from almond to coffin.

Some artists create actual cartoons, depicting the likes of Lola Bunny from Looney Tunes or the whole Scooby-Doo Gang, which requires some artistic know-how. But the simplest style is pretty straightforward, and DIYing is not out of the question.

Read on for a step-by-step process to create the look yourself.

Supplies

Step-By-Step

  1. Apply the base coat and allow it to dry completely.
  2. Apply two coats of color. Make sure it dries completely between coats and before the next steps.
  3. Outline the entire nail with a thin line of black polish.
  4. Add swoops of black accents.
  5. Use the white polish to add pops for dimension.
  6. Cover the nail with a top coat to keep your nails popping and protected.

Whether you DIY or consult a professional to achieve pop art nails, they’re a fun trend to get in on, with a surprisingly rich history in the art world.

This Celeb-Loved Dry Shampoo Revives And Thickens Thin, Lifeless Locks  https://www.suggest.com/serge-normant-meta-revive-dry-shampoo-overview/2712662/ Sat, 07 Jan 2023 21:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2712662 A woman with a short but voluminous hair style

Serge Normant is one of the leading hairstylists of our time. His work has been featured on fashion magazine covers like Vogue and Vanity Fair, on numerous fashion runways, and in countless television shows (recently with an always fashional Carrie ‘do in And Just Like That…).

To create his picture-perfect styles, Serge Normant developed a line of hair care products that are designed to create shiny, voluminous locks that are the stuff of envy. His cult-classic Dream Big Instant Volumizing Spray is beloved by both Julia Roberts and Brooke Shields, and those ladies know a thing or two about rocking a gorgeous mane.

Yet another product from his line has people talking (not surprisingly Roberts and Sarah Jessica Parker being two of them): his Meta Revive Dry Shampoo.

The Meta Revive Dry Shampoo isn’t your typical dry shampoo—it’s so much more. It also works as a root lifter, volumizer, texturizer, and hair thickener. Formulated with cedar bark extract and Zea Mays, this dry shampoo promises to quickly absorb excess oil while adding shine and softness, all without weighing down your hair.

This product can also work great on freshly washed hair, providing instant lift, body, and hold. Whether you are looking to extend your blowout, refresh your locks between washes, or simply add a little extra oomph to your look, the Meta Revive Dry Shampoo can handle it.

RELATED: This ’80s Hair Washing Trick Can Help Those With Thin Hair Score Extra Volume

Reviewers pointed out that this isn’t a drugstore brand dry shampoo, so a little goes a long way. Others note that this is just as much of a texturizing product as it is a dry shampoo, so if you’re looking to just skip another day of washing your hair, you might want to try something else. But if you want some serious volume and body, this product fits the bill.

“Love, love, love this dry shampoo,” one happy shopper wrote. “My hair tends to fall flat very quickly and gets oily fast … this gives me bounce, lift, and texture and reduces oil.”

“This is by far the best dry shampoo I’ve ever purchased. It does so much more than take care of oil or flatness, it adds remarkable body and volume, and even provides control,” another shopper noted. “I can use it sparingly for big results. This is a product I actually apply the day I shampoo because of the volumizing effects. I highly recommend to buy.”

With these glowing reviews, we’re definitely taking a second look. And if you’re in the market for more body and shine with your hair, Serge Normant’s Meta Revive Dry Shampoo may be worth a closer look for you as well.

Fashion generally goes through cycles, some of which are more tolerable than others. The popularity of different pants styles is no exception. I’ve witnessed my fair share of trends die and be reborn; meanwhile, I’ve been sitting comfortably in my skinny jeans for about a decade now.

But even I can feel the tides turning, and I’ve begun to hear the siren song of different styles of pants. What was once old will be new again, and high-waisted, wide-legged denim is all the rage now.

Here at Suggest, we’ve covered a slew of notable pants trends in the past year. There are a few we hope will stick around for the long haul (love the linen look), but we’re hoping others will stay in 2022 (smell ya later, double-waisted jeans!).

Let’s take a look back at some of our favorites, along with a couple of questionable styles that emerged (or reemerged) this year.

Linen Pants

It bears repeating that we hope linen pants are here to stay. We love the undone, relaxed look they give us and their ability to keep us cool in the hottest months of the year. Celebs like Meghan Markle and Jennifer Garner were spotted wearing this trend in 2022, so we’re hopeful this trend will come back around in the summertime for years to come.

Cargo Pants

These aren’t your ex-boyfriend’s old cargo pants. You know the ones, super baggy with frayed edges and holes galore—those can stay in the ’90s grunge scene where they belong. But we’ve gotta admit, these updated takes on cargo pants are pretty dang cute. They have functional pockets for women (what a concept!) and come in an array of variations: joggers, classic straight-leg, linen, and countless more.

Split-Hem Pants

Split-hem pants seemed to come out of nowhere, but everyone from Tracee Ellis Ross to Margot Robbie sported the trend in the past year. The style can be dressed up or down and, rumor has it, it can even make you look taller. These pants elongate the leg while giving you a chance to show off your shoes. They’re available in styles that make them suitable for everything from the gym to the office and everything in between.

Double-Waisted Jeans

If you’re into trying something different and buttons that go on for days, then the double-waisted jean trend might be right up your alley. These pants make it look as though you’re wearing jeans on top of your jeans, but if you’re into that, we say go for it! We, on the other hand, had very mixed feelings about wearing two waistbands at once.

Whale Tails

This highly-controversial trend from the early 2000s is apparently back, but luckily I haven’t spotted anyone wearing it out and about … yet. Allowing your g-string or thong to peek over your waistline is provocative, to be sure. But the recurrence of this trend means that low-rise pants are also back, and I can hear the collective groan of everyone who never wanted to see those again. We’ll be over here in our high-waisted pants for the foreseeable future, thanks.

Why Shoppers Are Ditching Their Foundation For This SPF-Infused Brightening Serum Tint https://www.suggest.com/tula-sunscreen-skin-tint-overview/2709865/ Thu, 22 Dec 2022 12:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2709865 Side-by-side images of a model wearing the Tula Serum Skin Tinted Sunscreen and dollops of the skin tint in a variety of skin tones

During the hottest summer months, your SPF-infused moisturizer or makeup probably won’t cut it in the sun protection department, especially if you’re sweating profusely or spending time out in the sun or in the water.

But during the winter, we oftentimes let our guard drop regarding sun safety. We get it; it can be hard to motivate ourselves to apply sunscreen when we’re hardly getting any sun. Even with the minimal sun exposure most of us get in the colder months, we still need to protect our skin.

That’s why we’re excited about this multifaceted product from TULA that acts as a skin tint, sun protectant, and serum.

It’ll work beautifully to add a glow to the dull, dry skin many of us experience in winter, and you won’t have to worry about also applying a regular sunscreen! Oh, and did we mention it comes in 30 shades and a variety of undertones?

RELATED: Shoppers Love This Luxury Neck And Décolleté Cream That Helps Lift And Tighten Crepey Skin

Dr. Roshini Raj is a practicing gastroenterologist and the founder of TULA. After discovering the internal benefits of probiotics, she began to research the external benefits too. She founded TULA (which means “balance” in Sanskrit) in 2014 with the goal of helping women feel more confident in their skin.

The Brightening Serum Skin Tint with SPF 30 is TULA’s latest product that combines the company’s proprietary blend of prebiotic and probiotic extracts with other effective ingredients.

This lightweight skin tint provides several benefits, starting with its ability to help even out your skin tone while providing it with broad spectrum SPF 30 sun protection, making it the perfect everyday complexion product. It’s suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and acne-prone skin, and it’s non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog your pores. Plus it’ll provide light-to-medium buildable coverage that won’t make your skin look cakey.

The ingredients include the Rainbow Seabright™ Elixir (seriously, how cool does that sound?). This combo of niacinamide and rainbow seaweed helps brighten the skin while protecting it from environmental damage.

Other notable ingredients include hyaluronic acid and ceramides for hydration along with collagen to improve the look of wrinkles. And of course, the S6Pro Complex™ (the brand’s aforementioned prebiotic/probiotic blend) helps improve the skin’s look and feel by improving its smoothness and balance.

As TULA is primarily a skincare brand, you can rest assured knowing their tinted sunscreen is formulated without any of the bad stuff—you won’t find any parabens, sulfates, phthalates, or fragrance in their products.

With overwhelmingly positive reviews, this SPF skin tint is likely on its way to becoming a bestseller. One TULA customer said, “This product is simply amazing. Love how it goes on for an effortless look. I want a supersized version! It’s basically replaced my everyday foundation routine at this point! Obsessed.”

Although this is sure to be a hero product for any skin type this time of year, we’re certain you’ll love it enough to use it all year long.

How To Avoid Creating A ‘Skin Sandwich’ With Your Outfit According To This Luxury Clothing Brand Founder https://www.suggest.com/how-to-style-boots-with-pants-skirts/2708893/ Wed, 21 Dec 2022 23:05:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2708893 a woman crosses the street wearing black booties and an orange coat

Amy Smilovic is the founder of the luxury clothing brand Tibi and a self-proclaimed “creative pragmatist.” She enjoys finding balance in her style choices, playing with originality and functionality. She describes her style as chill, modern, and classic.

You can find her on social media doing what she does best—giving cool, easy, and often effortless-looking styling tips.

Recently she posted a video about how to avoid a somewhat controversial topic—the “skin sandwich.” You may ask (as I did), what the heck is a skin sandwich?! Well, it gets a bit technical, so buckle up!

What’s A Skin Sandwich?

Do you ever feel weird about your look and you’re not sure why? Smilovic has a reason you may have never thought of. She starts the reel by saying, “Skin sandwiches are one of the most hotly debated items in my Instagram feed. I’m gonna give you some more clarification on when you’ve got a sandwich and when you don’t. Okay?”

Basically, a skin sandwich is created when two straight lines “sandwich” a narrow strip of your skin. Think about wearing a pencil skirt with a straight hem and boots that almost meet the skirt—but not quite. That little piece of skin makes the skin sandwich.

A pleated skirt, a skirt cut diagonally, cowboy-style boots, or anything that doesn’t make a straight line, even if the skin is showing, would not be considered a skin sandwich.

RELATED: Modern Shoulder Pads Are The Fashion Hack For A More Balanced Silhouette And Better Looking Posture

You can also get a skin sandwich with jeans and booties when that small section of skin above your ankle shows. Smilovic also says, “Jeans that sausage you tend to be big sandwich makers.”

Let’s break that down a little.

@amysmilovic

Honestly, why this topic is the most often debated in my feeds, I’ve yet to figure out. I think it is just the utter fear that this could happen has many on edge. Regardless, the fear is real- but the fixes are even realer. Ok? And as always, if you think skin sandwich’s are bullshit, and you love yourself a good sliver of skin, then go for it. This isn’t about “good” or “bad” style, it’s about identifying when you felt off, or even like shit, in your look but couldn’t identify the culprit. And in this case, its that piece of meat – right there- wedged between the hemline of your pant or skirt and the top of your boot. Ok?@worldoftibi #skinsandwich

♬ original sound – Amysmilovic

When your jeans “sausage” you it means that your jeans are super tight, but the fix is simple. Wearing jeans that have a looser fit has less of a “sandwich vibe,” Smilovic says. Another fix is to wear socks that either match your shoes or contrasting colored socks that are interesting enough to break up the two parallel lines.

Smilovic ends the reel with some sage advice: “Skin sandwiches are like anything in life. If you don’t feel like you have a problem then you don’t need to fix the problem. Okay?”

Think Your Allergies Are Bad Now? New Climate Change Study Shows They Could Get Way Worse In The Next 30 Years  https://www.suggest.com/climate-change-could-make-allergies-worse/2709009/ Tue, 20 Dec 2022 22:35:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2709009 Cartoon woman with seasonal allergies sneezing with tissue surrounded by plants and medication

Climate change has begun to measurably and observably impact the world around us. The frequency and intensity of extreme weather events are causing damage to every continent on the planet. It’s also prompting couples to reimagine if, when, and/or how they will have children.

The effects of climate change vary greatly in severity, but even something as small as your glass of wine will be affected by climate change in the future. And now we’ve learned that your seasonal sniffling and sneezing could get significantly worse in the coming years as well.

According to a study published in October in Frontiers in Allergy, two potent allergens—ragweed and oak pollen—may start earlier in the season, last longer than normal, and become more widely distributed as the climate continues to change.

This information comes to us from a study conducted by the Rutgers Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute. Using computer models, researchers simulated how climate change will affect the distribution and potency of certain allergens. The study concluded that by 2050, the two most prevalent allergens will be more common in areas where pollen is currently uncommon.

RELATED: Sick Of Seasonal Allergies? Experts Share The Products That Actually Provide Relief

The researchers adapted a computer model called the Community Multiscale Air Quality modeling system, which is an open-source tool managed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Alarmingly, even a moderate temperature increase resulted in significantly higher pollen concentrations.

According to the model, the Northeast and Southwest regions of the U.S. could see a 20% increase in ragweed and a 40% increase in oak pollen concentrations. Parts of Nevada and northern Texas could potentially experience a 100% increase in oak pollen by 2050, and Massachusetts and Virginia are predicted to have a 20 to 80% increase in airborne ragweed pollen by the same time.

Those who suffer from seasonal allergies or who have other chronic conditions like asthma are likely to suffer the negative health effects of a changing climate. Currently, more than 50 million people deal with various types of allergies. And of the 25 million people in the U.S. who have asthma, 60% of those have allergy-related asthma, making it the most common type.

However, even those without allergies or asthma will likely be affected by the increase in allergens. According to the study, pollen exposure can also increase susceptibility to respiratory viral infections like the flu and COVID-19.

This luscious cream hydrates skin while reducing the look of wrinkles and fine lines. Formulated with active ingredients including hyaluronic acid, squalane, and marine collagen, it promises to improve skin’s firmness and elasticity.

Finally, the addition of tripeptides complex plays a key role in helping to firm the skin.

While some anti-aging products can be irritating, reviewers say the cream is even great for those with sensitive skin.

One customer, in particular, was excited about the cream’s soothing benefits. “This was my first time [trying] the Babor brand and I have been loving this cream,” they wrote. “It’s been a great moisturizer and has a calming effect on my skin. My skin definitely looks more hydrated and even.”

This Math Equation Can Predict Whether Or Not Your Relationship Will Succeed, Researchers Say https://www.suggest.com/gottman-relationship-conflict-equation/2704440/ Fri, 16 Dec 2022 12:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2704440 Cartoon couple having a conflict and facing away from each other

Love is … a battlefield. A mystery. All around you. All you need. There are so many clichés about love, we’d never be able to list them all. Countless songs, poems, and movies explore what makes love grand and sometimes heartbreaking.

But is who you end up with a matter of fate and destiny or something else entirely? What if the odds of your relationship succeeding could be boiled down to mathematical equations? We’d be skeptical, to say the least.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING: Sentimental Holiday Gifts Your Loved One Is Sure To Cherish

According to doctors John Gottman and Julie Schwartz Gottman, clinical psychologists who’ve studied marriages and relationships for more than 40 years, there’s a mathematical equation that will determine if you’ll stay together with your partner—and it’s surprisingly accurate.

Figuring Up The Numbers

The research began in the ’70s at the University of Illinois and continued at the University of Washington. Researchers in “The Love Lab,” as it was coined, began studying and interviewing couples (hetero- and homosexual) and came up with an equation that can reliably predict (with 94% certainty) the future of a relationship.

In the Gottmans’ new book, The Love Prescription: 7 Days to More Intimacy, Connection, and Joy, the pair have broken down the data, outlining a multistep process for a better relationship. Professor and bestselling author Brené Brown said, “This book feels so hopeful because it’s direct, it’s really honest, and it’s so actionable.”

Thousands of couples were studied. Researchers assessed their facial expressions, heart rates, blood pressure, skin conductivity, and words exchanged with their partners and noted how many positive and negative interactions occurred.

Out of this research came a “magic ratio.” For every negative interaction during conflict, there needed to be a counterbalance of five positive interactions to maintain a “low-risk” relationship. When the researchers checked back up on couples six years after the study, they found that couples who had a five-to-one ratio or higher during conflict were more likely to still be happily together.

What Does That Mean, Exactly?

So what constitutes a positive or negative interaction? Positive interactions during conflict include expressions of validation and joy. Simply smiling, saying something affirming (e.g., “I understand”), and working together to problem-solve are all positive interactions during tough conversations.

However, Gottman describes certain negative interactions as “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.” These interactions include contempt, criticism, defensiveness, and stonewalling. Blaming or shaming the other person, disengaging, and making hurtful comments are all, of course, considered negative interactions.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING: Stumped On A Gift For Her? These Advanced Skincare Tools From FOREO Are Sure To Impress

The researchers also found that outside of conflict, the required ratio was higher: In everyday life, there needed to be 20 positive interactions for every negative one. Negative interactions are far more impactful and harder to recover from, which is why the ratio is so imbalanced. Accumulating several small positive interactions over time help make a relationship healthier.

What To Keep In Mind

The authors eventually concentrated on one word—kindness.

“The difference between the extremely unhappy couples and very happy couples boiled down to one simple thing: The happy couples were kinder when they spoke to each other,” wrote the Gottmans.

While it may seem like an odd concept (would you even want to keep track of how many positive to negative interactions occur in your relationship?), it’s actually kind of reassuring. Even just starting to take note of your behavior during disagreements and adjusting your reactions accordingly can start to shift your ratio in a positive direction.

It also means relationships don’t require perfection. Conflict is inevitable; this method focuses on managing it rather than erasing it. It’s the way we respond during conflict that really matters.

If worked through properly, conflict can ultimately strengthen your relationship. Responding with empathy instead of annoyance, showing an interest in the other person’s passions, and “turning toward” the other person can help improve a couple’s connection.

So find time each day to give a genuine compliment and emotionally connect with your partner, because it’ll add up in the long run.

You’re Probably Burning Your Candles Wrong: 5 Tips To Prolong Your Favorite Scents https://www.suggest.com/tips-for-burning-candles-correctly/2703071/ Mon, 12 Dec 2022 22:25:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2703071 Collection of candle paraphernalia

Candles can create a lovely ambience in your home, making the atmosphere cozy and dreamy with just a few expertly-placed votives. But like other discoveries we’ve made recently, from showering inefficiently to loading our dishwashers incorrectly, we’ve been burning our candles all wrong.

You might be thinking, “How can I do candles wrong?” We hear you—we rolled our eyes at first too. But it turns out there are candle-burning rules that candle fanatics take very seriously. And with the fanciest candles costing upwards of $75 or more, you might want in on this intel.

1. Burn It Right The First Time

The way you burn your candle the first time is crucial to its longevity. Make sure you burn it for at least three to four hours (or long enough that the wax pool reaches all the way to the edges of the candle jar).

Candle wax has memory (not kidding), and if you don’t allow the top layer to melt evenly all the way across the first time, it will only burn to that smaller circumference each subsequent time. This is called tunneling and results in a buildup of wax around the edge of the jar, making your candle look as though it has, you guessed it, a tunnel running through its center.

RELATED: Even When Not In Use, Your Gas Stove May Be Leaking Cancer-Causing Chemicals In Your Home

2. Fix Tunneling

It’s possible to fix a tunneled candle, but you must act fast. If you have to extinguish your candle before the top layer has a chance to melt evenly, the next time you use it, wrap aluminum foil around the top of the jar. Cut a hole in the center of the foil, and allow the candle to burn long enough so the wax melts into an even layer.

3. Keep The Wick Trimmed

Always keep the wicks of your candles trimmed to one-quarter of an inch long. Keeping it at this length will help avoid excess smoke and unsightly soot marks. You can use wick trimmers, nail clippers, or just regular scissors. Maintaining the wick will keep it from curling (another thing I’m guilty of) and potentially breaking off into the wax—not a cute look. Trimmed wicks also make for a prettier and cleaner flame.

4. Keep Candles Away From Drafts

It’s also important to burn candles in a well-ventilated room. But make sure to avoid keeping your candles too close to vents, open windows, ceiling fans, etc. That can cause sooting, flare-ups, and even tunneling.

5. Properly Extinguish The Flame

If you want elite candle-burner status, use a wick dipper or a candle snuffer rather than blowing out your candles the usual way. These tools will keep the wax inside the vessel, prevent too much smoking, and keep your home smelling like a candle instead of a campfire.

Tired Of Hanging The Same Slightly Tacky Tinsel? This Hack Will Make Your Tree The Prettiest On The Block https://www.suggest.com/christmas-tree-tinsel-stars-hack/2702822/ Sat, 10 Dec 2022 12:35:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2702822 Close-up of gold Christmas tree tinsel with stars interspersed

Tinsel garland is a tried-and-true Christmas tree decoration, but it’s definitely divisive. Some people claim it’s tacky and maybe a little too retro—is there such a thing? But it is a relatively cheap decoration that can make your tree look sparkly and pretty.

I mean, it’s one of the oldest holiday trends we’ve got (we’re talking 1600s here), but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t add it to your tree. Could it use a bit of a makeover, though? The answer to that is a resounding yes!

RELATED: Make Holiday Prep Less Stressful With This Veteran Interior Designer’s Pro Tips

A new hack shows how to update your garlands of tinsel into a fresh and modern look. It’s a unique take to be sure, but once again opinions are split: Some adore the look, while others are skeptical. We’d love to know—would you try this Christmas tree hack?

In a video that’s garnered more than 1.9 million views, TikTok creator Teana of @itstea____ showed how to create a “starburst” tinsel look instead of the traditional wrap-around-the-tree method.

Teana first twists a piece of tinsel around a branch, then takes a pair of scissors and clips off the end. Next, she fluffs out the strands and repeats the process sporadically throughout the tree.

Several commenters thought the process seemed longer than necessary, saying things like, “It’s so cute, but my patience could never.” But others were obsessed with the outcome. One commenter stated, “Aww it looks like little fireworks on the tree,” with which we have to agree.

If you want to get the look but are worried about waste, fret not. Teana claimed she only used three feet of tinsel garland to complete the look on her six-foot tree. So while this method isn’t reusable for real trees, it’s not super wasteful, and you could always use less than recommended.

However, another commenter pointed out a way to make the decorations more sustainable by gluing the tinsel “stars” to mini butterfly clips.

Even better, this tinsel garland comes in several different hues, so you can have a rainbow of stars/fireworks all over your tree!

This Simple, Inexpensive Hack Will Make Your Christmas Tree Look Fuller And More Expensive https://www.suggest.com/garlands-make-artificial-christmas-tree-fuller-hack/2703869/ Fri, 09 Dec 2022 22:35:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2703869 Couple assembling an artificial Christmas tree

There are so many benefits to having an artificial Christmas tree during the holiday season. They’re convenient, hypoallergenic, and super low-maintenance—no sweeping up pine needles or watering required. Plus, they come in an array of different styles and colors according to your taste.

They’re also economical—you can decorate the same tree for years to come—and they’re typically less of a fire hazard than a real tree. But as advantageous as they are in many ways, they sometimes need a little boost in the aesthetics department.

RELATED: Make Holiday Prep Less Stressful With This Veteran Interior Designer’s Pro Tips

Artificial trees can sometimes resemble the scraggly Charlie Brown Christmas tree, and we say lean into it if you dig that look. However, if you want your tree to look fuller or more expensive, then check out this hack!

TikTok creator @tnstyled normally focuses on easy and affordable recipes, but she occasionally has a home decor hack or two up her sleeve. She recently made a reel showing us how to up our artificial Christmas tree game, and it’s seriously the simplest hack.

The influencer said one of her favorite ways to make her Christmas tree look more voluminous is to add a few strands of inexpensive evergreen garland. In the reel, she wraps three strands around her pre-lit but undecorated tree starting at the top. After that, she throws in a few more pieces of extra greenery in a different shade for contrast.

To the naysayers who commented telling her to just buy a different/new/real/fuller tree, @tnstyled said, “Some people, unfortunately, can’t afford that. This garland is $5, so not very expensive.” And we wholeheartedly agree; improving things we already own is a great way to save money and avoid waste.

When it comes to choosing the right type of garland, you have a few different options. You can buy a versatile plain garland that will blend in with pretty much any artificial tree. Just make sure you buy enough to cover your whole tree.

Or go with a garland pre-decorated with pinecones, berries, poinsettias, etc. The look is natural and festive, and will save you some decorating time.

You could also go with frosted garlands for color contrast or to blend in with your flocked tree.

As a bonus, the leftover garland can be draped over mantelpieces, staircase banisters, entryway tables, or doorways for a festive look throughout your home. The options are endless when it comes to decorating with garland, but this hack is definitely going on my to-do list.

Trauma-Induced Loneliness Is An Invisible Epidemic Among Midlife Women https://www.suggest.com/trauma-induced-loneliness-in-midlife-women/2697687/ Tue, 06 Dec 2022 22:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2697687 Midlife woman covering her face with her hands in despair

Many people experience loneliness at some point during their lives, but not everyone experiences it the same way.

Feeling lonely is completely subjective—people may feel social loneliness, emotional loneliness, and/or existential loneliness. That said, what causes feelings of loneliness is much less understood.

According to a new study published in Women’s Midlife Health, over one-third of the adult population in the U.S. reported feelings of loneliness. This is alarming, given that this “state of distress” is often negatively linked to various mental and physical health issues.

Moreover, the study authors mentioned that loneliness is often less understood when it comes to minorities and women, both of whom are at higher risks of experiencing abuse and trauma. As such, researchers set aim at trying to better understand loneliness and its possible link with trauma.

The Study Participants

Fifty people between the ages of 35 and 60 who identified as women and who were fluent in English were recruited and interviewed for the study. The women lived in economically distressed neighborhoods in North Philadelphia. The Temple University Hospital System (TUHS) completed its research between February 2017 and April 2018.

RELATED: Don’t Have A Hobby? Not Only Is It Common, But It’s Totally Not Necessary For A Happy, Fulfilling Life

As per the study, the women had an average age of 50 and 74% were African American. Half of the study subjects were single, more than half were unemployed, and 70% reported prior mental health struggles. During the study, assessment tools confirmed that 78% of the subjects had anxiety and 64% had depression.

The Results

Common themes emerged from interviews conducted within the study group. Perceived causes of their collective loneliness included trauma, unhealthy relationships, and the burden of responsibility for others. Trauma was the most common theme, with only three participants not reporting any trauma in their lifetimes.

Physical abuse was reported by 80% of participants, while sexual abuse was reported by 58%. Emotional abuse or neglect was reported by an additional 62%. Overall, the study found that physical and emotional abuse was notably associated with loneliness.

Furthermore, a person’s loneliness score increased when she had several traumatic events in her lifetime. Interestingly, the study did not find increased levels of loneliness when participants reported experiencing sexual abuse, witnessing violence, and being raised by non-biological caregivers.

Many participants described feeling detached and feeling a need for companionship or someone to talk to, even when other people were around. One participant responded to the interview questions by saying, “Mentally I grew up alone, even though I was in a house, a family, and people around me … Mentally, I was broken.”

Another woman stated that she didn’t want to continue the cycle of abuse, saying, “I’m just trying to break that cycle because I’m not going to raise my kids like that.”

The Need For Trauma-Informed Care

Because loneliness is correlated with feelings of despair, suicidal ideation, and other mental health issues, trauma-informed care is desperately needed. The physical health consequences of loneliness are also apparent.

Being lonely has been associated with poor immune response, coronary artery disease, and poor sleep. It’s been linked with cognitive decline, poorer mental health outcomes, and dementia as well.

RELATED: Thinking Your Blues Away: The Amazing Way We Could Potentially Overpower Negative Memories With Positive Ones

Trauma-informed care is important for most populations. However, given the results of this study, low-income, midlife, and minority women in particular should be screened for trauma and loneliness—particularly in primary care and mental health settings.

Trauma-informed care takes into account a person’s past experiences and builds trust between the patient and the provider. It keeps the patient’s safety, emotional and physical, at the forefront. More research is needed, but supporting women in midlife is essential, especially focusing on mitigating loneliness and providing access to and support for trauma treatment.

Dandruff Caused By Menopause Needs A Different Solution Than Your Standard Bottle Of Heads & Shoulders https://www.suggest.com/menopause-dandruff-cause-and-treatment/2697094/ Mon, 05 Dec 2022 12:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2697094 A woman raking her hands through her hair after a shower

Menopause isn’t a dirty word, yet it’s still a pretty taboo topic for some reason. Unless you specifically seek out information about the numerous symptoms, you’ll likely be in for some surprises as you enter your menopausal years. Of course, not everyone will have the same experience, and symptoms can range from barely noticeable to debilitatingly severe.

There are, of course, more well-known symptoms: hot flashes, weight changes, and mood swings. But some other symptoms may come as a surprise. Some of the most unexpected menopausal symptoms we’ve recently become privy to include burning mouth syndrome, genitourinary syndrome, and frozen shoulder

Now we’re here to add another one to the list: dandruff.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING: This All-Natural Supplement Restored Moisture And Strength To My Dry, Brittle Strands

The cause of dandruff some women experience during menopause may differ from other common causes of dandruff. Estrogen and progesterone production declines during menopause, which can lead to many of the aforementioned symptoms. Lower estrogen levels cause thinner, drier skin everywhere on the body, including the scalp.

According to Dermatology Times, sebum production also decreases during this time, which can lead to a dry, flaky scalp. While some dandruff is caused by a fungus (seborrheic dermatitis), menopausal dandruff won’t respond to the same types of treatments (e.g. an antifungal shampoo).

However, there are other ways to treat dandruff during menopause.

To do so, start off by using a treatment like the JVN Pre-Wash Scalp Oil. This oil, formulated with hemisqualane, rosemary extract, and basil root extract hydrates the scalp and protects the hair from breakage and fallout. Plus, it’s vegan, color-safe, and cruelty-free.

After pre-treating the scalp, be sure to choose a shampoo with salicylic acid. This medicated shampoo from Nizoral helps moisturize the scalp while ridding it of any dry flakes. It’s also soothing and prevents itching and irritation.

Use a silicone scalp massager with your shampoo to give your dandruff a one-two punch, massaging vigorously to dislodge the dry skin. Suitable for all hair types, this massager will exfoliate the scalp without being abrasive. Follow up by conditioning as normal.

While menopause is anything but fun, at least this annoying symptom is easy to treat as long as you have the right tools.

This ’80s Hair Washing Trick Can Help Those With Thin Hair Score Extra Volume   https://www.suggest.com/reverse-washing-hair-how-to/2694975/ Sat, 03 Dec 2022 21:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2694975 Woman washing the ends of her hair

Washing your hair is a straightforward task, right? A little shampoo, a little conditioner, a little scrub, and voilà—you’re good to go. It turns out, there are methods and techniques that will result in cleaner, healthier hair. For starters, focusing on the scalp where oil production actually happens is important. And according to Jennifer Aniston’s hairstylist, you really should wash, rinse, and repeat when cleansing your hair.

Another hairwashing method has been on the rise lately, but it’s far from new. This process became popular in the ’80s when perming was all the rage and hair needed as much protection as it could get. It is now getting renewed interest, especially for those looking for an instant volume boost.

Referred to as reverse washing, this aptly named technique is simple—you literally reverse the order in which you wash your hair.

How To Reverse Wash Your Hair

After wetting the hair, apply conditioner starting at the ends and work your way up. For maximum moisture benefits, massage the conditioner into your strands and let sit for about five minutes.

Next, add shampoo to your scalp, and be sure to gently massage with your fingertips to remove product buildup at the roots. Using a scalp massager is also a great tool for a thorough clean. Finally, rinse with warm water.

RELATED: This One Simple Change Can Reduce Scalp Build-Up And Increase Hair Volume

The Benefits Of Reverse Washing

The thought behind reverse-washing is two-fold. Shampoo is notoriously drying, so applying conditioner first to dry ends can help protect them from drying out even more.

Additionally, conditioner is often thought to weigh down strands, so by shampooing second, you’ll be removing any leftover conditioner that can result in limp hair post-shower.

As an added bonus, you may even be able to extend the time between washes thanks to the conditioner being shampooed off instead of simply rinsed, the latter of which may cause hair to look greasy quicker.

Who Reverse Washing Is Good For

Reverse hair washing is best for those with thin or fine hair as it can protect delicate strands while giving the appearance of thicker hair. It is also a great choice to try for those that struggle with dry, damaged hair, especially if you color or chemically treat your tresses.

Those with very thick or tightly coiled hair though will probably want to skip this trend. Because reverse-washing essentially is shampooing the conditioner off the hair, this might take away too much moisture this hair type needs.

That said, it’s all about experimenting with what your hair and scalp need on any given day. Who knows, maybe reverse washing may just be your new go-to hair cleansing technique.

From Removing Coffee Mug Stains To Polishing Shoes, Nail Polish Remover Is Quite Handy Around Your Home https://www.suggest.com/household-uses-nail-polish-remover/2692410/ Wed, 30 Nov 2022 23:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2692410 A stained coffee mug and a clean coffee mug

We love learning new uses for common household products, and we’re even more interested when those hacks involve cleaning messes.

We’ve recently learned a lot about common food staples and their unexpected uses. Did you know that honey can help fresh flowers last longer, or that mayo can clean crayon marks from walls and erase water stains from wood? Even expired spices have a multitude of hidden uses.

Inedible products such as nail polish remover can also be used in ways that differ from their intended purpose. Nail polish remover contains a solvent called acetone, so it’s really good at its original job—but nail polish isn’t the only thing it can remove.

RELATED: These Genius, Easy Furniture Hacks Will Leave Them Looking Brand New

Keep in mind that nail polish remover is highly flammable, so it should never be used close to an open flame or heat source. Make sure to keep the area ventilated as well, as nail polish can be irritating to the skin, lungs, and mucus membranes. And always keep out of reach of children and pets.

1. Remove Stains From Coffee Mugs

After a while, no matter how hard you scrub, your coffee mugs will become stained. It’s just a part of life. But once again, nail polish remover can save the day. Use a Q-tip or cotton round to scrub the interior of your ceramic mug and remove the unsightly stains, then be sure to follow up with soap and water.

2. Remove Ink And Permanent Marker Stains

Ink and permanent marker stains can be erased from hard non-porous surfaces and fabrics with nail polish remover. For hard surfaces, soak a cloth or cotton ball with nail polish and scrub until clean.

To remove from fabric, make sure to spot-test in an inconspicuous spot first to ensure the material is strong enough to withstand the acetone. Apply the nail polish remover to a clean cloth, then dab at the stain until it disappears. Make sure to wash all items afterward.

3. Revive Old Nail Polish

It’s such a bummer when your favorite nail polish gets gunky, thick, and/or dried out before you finish the bottle. Nail polish remover can once again save the day. Just add a drop (using a dropper would be ideal) of nail polish remover to the bottle. Next, roll the nail polish bottle between your hands for around a minute.

The acetone should help return the nail polish to its original smooth state. Afterward, make sure to store your nail polish in a cool place with the lid tightly closed. Store all of your nail polish bottles upright so clumps don’t form at the neck of the bottles. And only keep your nail polish bottle open as long as necessary when using. Exposure to air will dry out the bottle quickly.

4. Get Rid Of Sticker Gunk From Glass Or Metal

If you have children or grandchildren, you likely know the joy that stickers can bring them. However, they can also cause a headache once the stickers are stuck to everything, including your metal and glass appliances.

Luckily, using a little bit of nail polish remover can dissolve any leftover residue that stickers can leave. Just dab a little on the adhesive to break it down and wipe it clean.

5. Disinfect Nail Clippers And Other Grooming Tools

Because nail polish remover is made from acetone and alcohol, it makes a great disinfectant. You can disinfect your nail clippers, tweezers, scissors, and other grooming tools with a cotton ball soaked in nail polish remover. Make sure to wash the tools with soap and water and let them dry before using them again.

6. Shine Your Shoes

You can shine your patent leather shoes and clean scuff marks from your tennis shoes with nail polish remover. Spot-test first, then soak a paper towel in nail polish remover and gently buff away the marks. Make sure to wipe the shoes dry afterward. Enjoy seeing your reflection in your new-looking shoes!

Viral French Manicure Hack Promises The Perfect Mani, Even If You Suck At Doing Your Own Nails https://www.suggest.com/nails-inc-french-mani-hack/2694696/ Tue, 29 Nov 2022 12:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2694696 A French manicure with a chunky sweater

A French manicure is the epitome of class and elegance, at least according to 13-year-old me. Honestly, though, it’s a chic, timeless look that also happens to be currently trending.

Orly founder Jeff Pink is widely credited with coining the name and look and introducing the French Manicure to the United States in 1975. The name, according to the Orly website, emerged when the nail trend was spotted on Paris runways.

Others say Max Factor came up with a very similar look called “society nail tint,” which was popular in the 1930s.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING: Struggling With Thinning Brows And Eyelashes? This Clinically Proven Growth Serum Provides Results In Just 4 Weeks

Regardless of its provenance, getting the look will cost you a few extra bucks at the salon, and trying to DIY a French manicure can be frustrating. Luckily, a new viral hack has been making the rounds on social media claiming to provide a foolproof French manicure. But does it actually work?

@matteaboutnails

@nailsinclondon French Mani Hack is for all the babes who want THE classic manicure without the need to call in a pro 〰💖 #frenchmanicure #frenchnailhack #nailsinc

♬ Darling – Trees and Lucy

Many users on TikTok have been enamored with Nails.INC’s new French Mani Hack kit, which includes a bottle of sheer pink polish, a bottle of white polish, and a small tool with a rounded silicone top. After painting on the pink polish, simply swipe a little white polish on the tool and stamp it onto the tips of the nails. Easy, right?

Some nail aficionados are even using a silicone tool with colorful gel polish to take the look to a whole new level.

As it turns out, the idea of stamping on the tip of a French manicure isn’t a new concept or one that needs a specific kit, as other TikTok users demonstrate the same technique using a simple makeup sponge.

Based on the results, it isn’t surprising the special silicone stamp provides a cleaner line than the porous makeup sponge. It also looks much easier to clean and won’t absorb excess polish the same way the makeup sponge would.

That said, we all know social media can make everything look much easier than it is in real life. And if you’re someone who struggles to just apply polish normally, this hack may seem to be too good to be true.

Based on initial but limited reviews of the product, it appears to take some practice to figure out the technique. Accounting for the angle, pressure, and amount of polish needed on the tool can all take a little tweaking to figure out what will work best for your nail length. We can imagine making it even on each nail takes a bit of skill and patience as well.

Still, this looks bounds and leaps easier than attempting to create a French manicure free-handed.

Nails.INC is far from the first brand to sell a product aimed at creating French manicures easier. You might be familiar with half moon guides that, just like painter’s tape, help create a clean line even if you don’t have a steady hand. One Suggest editor personally has tried and loves this technique for creating a clean tip.

When it comes to nail polish in any form, it’s all about a little practice and patience. Of course, a helpful tool to make the task easier is always appreciated, and these French manicure hacks may just be the tool for you!

After Two Autoimmune Diagnoses, One Woman Created A Mineral Makeup Line That Is Also Great For Menopausal Skin https://www.suggest.com/kari-gran-skincare-mineral-makeup-menopausal-skin/2691968/ Sat, 26 Nov 2022 20:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2691968 a model with a tooth gap wears red lipstick

Kari Gran was working as a real estate agent when she was diagnosed with two autoimmune disorders: Graves’ disease and Hashimoto’s. Suddenly, self-care became a part-time job.

Gran began experimenting with homegrown skincare formulations that her skin and body could tolerate. She dove deep into research on ingredients and came up with formulations that caught the interest of fellow real estate agent Lisa Strain, who convinced Gran to turn her creations into a business.

Gran and Strain launched the skincare and makeup company in 2011, and over the past 10 years have launched a variety of skincare and makeup products made from organic and naturally-derived ingredients, created for women experiencing skin changes associated with menopause.

With the holidays fast approaching, we’re particularly excited about Kari Gran’s makeup, offerings. Each product is free of dyes, synthetic fragrances, parabens, talc, and fillers, and is formulated with menopausal skin in mind.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING: If You Have Irritated Skin, This Underrated Product Should Be In Your Skincare Arsenal

One more reason to love Kari Gran products: she offers refills, which are packaged in 100% compostable packets.

Even better, Kari Gran is offering 15% off site-wide, plus a free Essential Mini Balm when you spend $65 or more through December 2. Here are a few of the Kari Gran products on our holiday wish list!

The Lip Whip, also known as “better balm,” is one of the brand’s signature and best-selling products. It combines your favorite shades with a hydrating balm in the perfect portable pot. The Jeannie and Marsala Lip Whips are cozy, fall-inspired shades that are buildable and blendable. Formulated with organic sunflower oil, organic camellia oil, and organic beeswax, these lip whips make a perfect gift for yourself or a friend.

The ethos behind Kari Gran is keeping your skin healthy, not about turning back time or anti-aging. The Mineral Powder Foundation has only five ingredients and nine shades to choose from. It’s lightweight, buildable, and breathable, giving you the coverage you desire without caking. If you’re unsure of your shade, choose the Foundation Sample Kit. Pick from the light, medium, or dark collections or all shades and get credit toward a full-sized product.

Kari Gran calls the Peony Mineral Blush a universally flattering shade and customers seem to agree. Out of 86 reviews, 85 reviews were extremely positive. Even skeptics seemed to only have good things to say.

One reviewer wrote, “I have always been afraid of blush. This product changed that for me. While it looks hot pink in the container, it goes on looking natural, subtle, and beautiful. It just has a way of adding dimension and freshness without being obvious. I am a new fan!”

The blush is also formulated with just three ingredients, reducing the chance of irritation or allergic reactions.

Wearing Underwear As Outerwear Is On The Rise, And Not For The First Time https://www.suggest.com/underwear-as-outerwear-trend/2691282/ Mon, 21 Nov 2022 21:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2691282 Side-by-side of Princess Diana and Emily Ratajkowski wearing undergarments as outerwear

By now we know that fashion trends have a way of repeating themselves every 20 years or so, even the ones we thought were too heinous to be revived.

Some trends we’re happy to see reemerge include Birkenstock shoes and the reimagining of cargo pants (who knew cargo pants could be functional and pretty?). On the other hand, we feel more conflicted about more regrettable trends like the whale tail and zigzag headbands re-entering the mainstream.

The latest trend to reemerge, wearing underwear as everyday clothing, falls more into this latter camp.

RELATED: Thank Gen Z For Bringing Back This Amazing ’90s Boot Trend

Everyone from Bella Hadid to members of the Kardashian/Jenner crew has been spotted wearing their underwear as outerwear lately. But while influencers are running around in their undies, I prefer the warmth and comfort of my sweatpants and hoodies—and I don’t think that makes me prudish.

Then And Now

Of course, we all remember Madonna’s infamous cone bras from the early ‘90s. She wasn’t the only ‘90s celeb to wear their undergarments as clothing, either. Selena also wore her share of bustiers and hot pants, and many more celebs followed suit, wearing slips as dresses, bralettes as shirts, and boxers as shorts.

Today’s iteration of the style is a bit more skin-forward, with tiny bra tops under blazers and see-through dresses exposing barely-there bottoms being much of the norm. Brands like SKIMS have also further blurred the lines between loungewear and underwear.

Still, there have been some more elegant interpretations of the trend, like the bedazzled bustier Scarlett Johansson wore to the American Cinematheque Awards last year. So if you prefer your undergarments with a little more glitz and glamour, that’s fair game too!

How To Try It Out, If You Dare

Our favorite iteration of the look includes a sexy bustier or bra top pair with high-waisted pants and a structured blazer, a la ScarJo. This look has been a go-to for many Gen X Hollywood actresses, which allows for a polished red carpet ensemble that is arguably much more comfortable than a dress.

For a more casual look, try wearing a bralette under an open button-down shirt or oversized jacket. For something a little chicer, you could layer a sheer shirt over a black bralette or corset top. You could also reverse this by layering the corset over top of a button-down shirt.

Truly, there aren’t any rules when styling this trend. Corsets, longline bras, and silky slip camis can all be worn with joggers, jeans, and tailored trousers alike. If you dig it, we say wear your panties with pride. There will apparently be plenty of looks to choose from in the coming months.

Sarah Jessica Parker Gives ‘And Just Like That…’ Fashion Sneak Peak Featuring A Colorful Mix Of Prints And Some Iconic Shoes https://www.suggest.com/sarah-jessica-parker-and-just-like-that-fashion-blue-suede-boots/2689543/ Fri, 18 Nov 2022 22:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2689543 Sarah Jessica Parker in a Prabal Gurung dress at a March 2022 red carpet event.

Mixing prints and fabric isn’t for the faint of heart, but as we know, Sarah Jessica Parker (SJP) never shies away from taking fashion risks.

In a recent Instagram post, SJP posted a picture of herself wearing a layered look decked out with plenty of accessories. The mismatched but somehow still cohesive ensemble featured a blue and white plaid peacoat, a flowy maxi dress with stripes of fall hues, and a quintessential season stape gray Panama-style hat.

The hat and the vintage bag were fab, but one thing caught our attention even among the many colors and prints: her blue suede “Duchessa Gardini” boots. In the caption, SJP referred to the boots, calling them “Carrie’s version of blue suede shoes.”

“Duchessa Gardini” is apparently a faux line of Italian handcrafted footwear that exists in Carrie Bradshaw’s fictional world. She told Vogue that it would be “too weird” for her actual real-life shoe line to appear in the world of the show. However, SJP has actually made several real designs for the pretend label.

RELATED: Sarah Jessica Parker Shares A Sneak Peek Of ‘And Just Like That…’ Street Fashion And It Features This Controversial Shoe Trend

It seems SJP’s eclectic getup will be featured in the second season of And Just Like That…, which was renewed earlier this year. While no release date has been set yet, the show’s Instagram page caused quite a stir with their latest post of Carrie stepping out of a trailer in the wedding gown.

We love anything SJP, and these boots could easily be a fall-weather wardrobe staple for those who enjoy a bold pop of color in their closet, even if they’re not using them to meander around Manhattan like Carrie. In the meantime, we’ll try to find our own pair of knee-high suede boots and patiently await And Just Like That…’s second season.

Julia Roberts Is A Fan Of This Serum Foundation With Hyaluronic Acid That’s Perfect For Mature Skin https://www.suggest.com/julia-roberts-lancome-teint-idole/2689445/ Fri, 18 Nov 2022 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2689445 Close-up of Julia Roberts at the 2022 Academy Museum Gala

To achieve flawless-looking skin like Julia Roberts it helps to start off with fantastic genes, plenty of money, and professional makeup artists (MUAs) ready and willing to help. But Roberts typically likes to keep her looks simple—and we love her for that.

In a time when super-contoured faces seem to be the norm, Roberts’s fresh-faced style stands out from the crowd. And it helps that her MUA is a pro at emphasizing her features without overwhelming her face.

Roberts was recently honored with the Icon Award at the second annual Academy Museum Gala, celebrating her vast array of memorable roles (Erin Brockovich, Vivian Ward, and Anna Scott, just to name a few). She showed up and showed out in a Thom Browne black silk faille corset, wool drop waist trouser skirt, and oversized sack jacket with grosgrain tipping.

Her hair was slicked back in a low bun and she wore an understated makeup look along with minimal jewelry. Her elegant, sophisticated style certainly made her look the part of an icon while keeping the attention on her career achievements.

RELATED: Julia Roberts Credits This Instant Volumizing Spray For Giving Her Camera-Ready Confidence

We can’t help but notice how naturally radiant Roberts’s face looked. Her MUA, Genevieve Herr, used the Lancôme Teint Idole Foundation with Hyaluronic Acid to create a luminous, flawless base. Herr told Byrdie that the foundation was “the most important product for her look.”

Zendaya is also a fan of this foundation, which is formulated with an 82% hydrating serum base formula, including hyaluronic acid and mandelic acid. Together, these ingredients visibly plump, hydrate, and smooth the skin while providing a buildable medium coverage. What’s more, it’s available in a wide array of shades (with varying undertones!).

Herr also used the accompanying Teint Idole Concealer on the t-zone and to brighten the under-eye area. This concealer is obviously made to perfectly complement the foundation. It’s a lightweight, hydrating, long-lasting concealer that brightens and covers imperfections while imparting a matte finish.

The two products combined made for an immaculate base. Of course, Herr used plenty of other products to complete Roberts’s look for the evening, and in our opinion, the stand-out product was the Lancôme Teint Idole Foundation. Ultimately, Roberts’s final look was elegant, refined, and befitting of an icon.

These Controversial Shoes From Your Youth Keep Selling Out On Repeat, And I Can See Why https://www.suggest.com/birkenstock-boston-clog-viral/2689500/ Thu, 17 Nov 2022 20:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2689500 A woman smiling and walking her dog in the city.

Birkenstocks (or Birks, as the kids would say) have always been divisive. You probably have an image in your head of shoes with cork insoles and a suede leather exterior. This combination seems stylish to some, while others just don’t see the appeal.

And we get it, Birks can sometimes be lumped into the “ugly shoe” category along with other trendy footwear, like Uggs or Crocs. But recently, Birkenstock has had a huge cultural resurgence—and honestly, we’re here for it.

I bought my first pair of Birkenstock sandals at the beginning of the summer, and I’ve rarely taken them off since. They’re so comfy, super easy to throw on, and go with just about everything.

I even wear them with socks if it’s a little chilly outside. They’re just that comfortable. And although several copycats have been launched by the likes of Alexander McQueen, Celine, Gucci, Fendi, etc., there’s just nothing like the real deal.

RELATED: Thanks Gen Z For Bringing Back A ’90s Boot Trend—This Waterproof Version Is A Must

Birkenstock has a ton of different styles to choose from: sneakers, boots, clogs, sandals, and more. But the Boston Clog is the style that’s blowing up on social media and flying off the shelves faster than they can be kept in (Birken)stock.

This classic clog has gone super-viral on Pinterest and TikTok, making them difficult to find at most retailers. One theory for their popularity, according to TikTok creator Annie Paventy, is because of their comfort and versatility.

“I’ve seen them styled so many ways,” she said. “They’re also super comfortable, probably one of the most comfortable shoes you can wear besides a pair of sneakers. They’re like the epitome of the cozy, comfortable shoe.”

It can be difficult to find a pair of Boston Clogs, but where there’s a will, there’s a way. In addition to scouring various retailer websites and signing up for email alerts, you could also try calling a local store in the morning to see whether they’ve gotten a shipment. Otherwise, if you’re willing to pay a premium, it couldn’t hurt to check out resellers like Poshmark or Mercari.

So where do you come down on the Birkenstock debate? Are you a yay or a nay? Personally, while I can see the merit of the detractors’ arguments, I’ve seen the light and these will be my go-to kicks for the foreseeable future.

‘The Very Feature You’re Demonized For Made You Possible’—The Biological Reason You Should Celebrate Your Curves https://www.suggest.com/women-storing-fat-survival-mechanism/2689063/ Wed, 16 Nov 2022 21:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2689063 Black woman embracing her curvy figure and smiling

As I’m sure most women on the planet can relate to, our relationship with our bodies, particularly our weight, is something we struggle with since the moment we played with a Barbie doll. Bombarded with images from magazines and movies, we internalized being thin with being worthy at a very young age.

Luckily, progress has been made in recent years to celebrate the curves, bumps, divots, jiggles, wiggles, and every other part of women’s bodies that is not only natural, but as it turns out, has helped us survive.

Recently a Suggest editor stumbled across an inspiring video from the social media influencer Chelsea Hart. Hart’s Instagram page is full of stories and commentary on a plethora of social issues, and in a recent post, they encouraged us to love our curves.

According to Hart, a woman approached them to inquire about their workout routine, saying she wished her body looked like theirs and calling them “so lucky.” It should be noted that Hart is tall, thin, and has a somewhat athletic build.

“I did not like this!” said Hart in their Instagram video. “This energy where you compliment me at the expense of yourself—I rebuke it!”

Hart went on to explain that body types are mostly determined by genetics and that they personally inherited the physical traits of their biological father, a tall lanky man. Hart said their mother is “one of the healthiest eaters [they] know” yet has a “voluptuous” frame and is often “gaslit” by her doctors due to her body type.

RELATED: Woman Turned Away From Party Bus Because Of Her Size Is Now Calling For Change

The video continued with Hart giving us a history lesson. “Many of your ancestors survived unimaginable famines and droughts,” they said. “And the only kind of [feature] that survive climates like those is an ability to retain fat—the very feature you are demonized for made you possible against impossible odds.”

They’re not wrong. In this 2019 study published in Cell Reports, professor and lead study author Ann Marie Schmidt said, “We discovered an anti-starvation mechanism that has become a curse in times of plenty because it sees cellular stress created by overeating as similar to stress created by starvation—and puts the brakes on our ability to burn fat.”

Basically, the trick our bodies used in times of old to keep us from starving to death can make it difficult for us to lose weight in modern times, even if we have plenty to eat. In short, Hart was right, and we should thank this bodily phenomenon for saving the lives of our ancestors, thus allowing us to live our marvelous lives today.

Hart finished her video by saying, “You are a walking, talking victory; your body is a miracle.” I think we could all use more of that kind of positivity when it comes to discussing our bodies.

Do You Avoid Chatting With Strangers? A New Study Indicates It Is Negatively Impacting Your Health https://www.suggest.com/social-interactions-wellness-prediction-study/2688394/ Tue, 15 Nov 2022 12:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2688394 A group of strangers waiting on a train, not talking to on another

Personally, reading this study gave me a feeling of dread. Great! The thing I’ve perfected, avoiding talking to strangers at all costs, may be bad for me.

Some people can strike up a conversation with anyone at any time. My best friend is the epitome of an extrovert. She’s never met a stranger and can talk to anyone about almost any subject. Once I get past pleasantries with a stranger my mind goes blank. It’s a phenomenon that I’ve learned to live with.

But I know I’m not the only person avoiding small talk in the grocery store or waiting room. Most people seem mainly interested in what’s happening on their phones. Most people are definitely avoiding eye contact.

RELATED: Are You An ‘Orchid’ Or A ‘Dandelion?’ This Personality Difference Could Impact Your Cognitive Abilities As You Age

But there are plenty of reasons people might avoid talking to strangers aside from anxiety. They may be in a rush or busy thinking about other things. They might be hesitant due to the lingering pandemic. Or they might just be naturally introverted.

Women in midlife in particular might be juggling spending time with their kids, date nights with their partner, seeing their friends on rare occasions, and assisting aging parents. So striking up conversations with strangers is not high up on their list of priorities.

Whatever the reason, a new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) found that our overall well-being can potentially suffer when we avoid conversations with strangers.

Data Collection: 50,000+ Study Subjects

Researchers collected responses from more than 50,000 people across four studies. The first was a sample of 578 people from the United States who completed a preregistered survey. The next was taken from 19,197 respondents to an American Time Use Survey. Researchers also included 10,447 responses to WHO’s study on Global Aging and Adult Health and, lastly, 21,644 users of a French mobile application.

The point was to suss out what types of relationships and how many interactions predicted a person’s well-being. They looked at who the respondents interacted with daily (kids, partners, family members, colleagues, friends, strangers) and then determined the person’s level of happiness.

The Importance Of Talking To Literally Anyone

The research found positive correlations between greater diversity in people’s social lives and a greater overall subjective well-being. Even interactions between people with “weak” ties (e.g. talking with a stranger) promoted overall wellness.

In a lab experiment, people who were instructed to interact with a stranger reported equal happiness to those assigned to interact with their romantic partner. People in the studies self-reported levels of their physical health and levels of happiness.

Overall, having daily interactions with a diverse set of people promoted well-being. So while talking with your friends and family is important, expanding your social network to include other people may be just as important. Chatting with your neighbors, the cashier at your coffee shop, or people you see often at the market could improve your overall well-being.

RELATED: It Turns Out Tea Is The Simple Way To Boost Your Mental And Physical Health

Those who branch out and spend time with a diverse group of people reported higher levels of life satisfaction, quality of life, and well-being. Regardless of age, gender, and socioeconomic status, the findings were the same.

Diversity among the people who subjects chatted with was even more important than the number of interactions a person had or the amount of time spent interacting. Across all the data sets, having a diverse social portfolio was the top predictor of well-being and (although a weaker predictor) of physical health. The researchers found that a more diverse “social portfolio” was even more important than being married.

No one’s suggesting striking up a conversation with a strange man in a dark alley. But otherwise, research shows striking up conversations with people you normally wouldn’t can be a fantastic idea for both your emotional and physical health.

Anything that can improve our world, improve our emotional well-being, and promote inclusion and diversity is a great thing in our books.

Don’t Have A Hobby? Not Only Is It Common, But It’s Totally Not Necessary For A Happy, Fulfilling Life https://www.suggest.com/what-is-a-hobby/2688253/ Sun, 13 Nov 2022 20:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2688253 Woman holding a yoga mat with an unhappy expression and thumb down

Life is stressful enough without stressing about what we do in our downtime. Even just trying to answer the question “What do you like to do for fun?” can make some people anxious. Maybe you were once a great photographer or phenomenal knitter, but life got in the way of things you used to enjoy.

Or perhaps you never took to any particular hobby. That’s okay too. You might not have the time, energy, or motivation to go on that hike, finish that scrapbook, or start on that memory quilt.

It turns out, maybe the idea that a hobby has to involve a certain skill is truly the root of anxiety around pastimes.

Why Do We Feel Anxious About The Idea Of Hobbies?

It can be hard to embrace a “hobby-less” life when your social media feeds are filled with friends who embroider, do woodwork, and bake beautiful pastries.

Even more so when it seems like everyone is turning their hobbies into a profitable side hustle—couldn’t we all use a little extra cash? But when hobbies morph into work, are they even still considered a hobby?

RELATED: This Wearable Device Doesn’t Track Your Health, It Actively Helps Improve It By Reducing Stress Signals In The Body

And putting pressure on yourself to be the “best” at a particular art form is unproductive. Seeing these perfectly-curated Instagram pages from people who’ve spent countless hours honing their crafts might make you feel like you’re not “good” enough or “artsy” enough to even try, which can put you in an even bigger rut.

What Are Hobbies Anyway?

According to Merriam-Webster, a hobby is “a pursuit outside one’s regular occupation, engaged in especially for relaxation.” Okay, so binging a season of The Great British Baking Show while drinking copious amounts of hot tea technically counts, right?

Your hobby/hobbies don’t have to look a certain way, they just need to make you feel a certain way. And if watching television is your way of relaxing, then, by all means, claim that as your hobby!

Hobbies don’t have to require a lot of skill, practice, or creativity. Doing a puzzle, relaxing on the porch, or taking your dog for a walk are all equally valid. But it’s also okay if you don’t enjoy those activities or feel relaxed doing those things.

A Life Without Hobbies

So do we even need formal hobbies? We all remember the “hustle” culture that dominated before 2020—the burnout that many people experienced was palpable. And during the pandemic, many realized they needed to slow down and find joy in small things.

According to a 2009 study published in the National Library of Medicine, partaking in activities you enjoy can be good for your mental and physical health. But that doesn’t mean your hobbies have to be some elaborate, grand, or physically demanding undertaking. Choosing something simple to do in your spare time (granted you have some) is a great way to unwind.

You can meditate, take a nap, or listen to a podcast—as long as you feel relaxed, we (and Merriam-Webster!) say it counts as a hobby. So next time someone asks you, “What do you do for fun?” you can likely think of several things you enjoy.

Don’t Wash Pet Hair-Covered Clothes In The Washing Machine, And 4 Other Items You Should Take Care With When Cleaning https://www.suggest.com/dont-machine-wash-these-items/2687152/ Thu, 10 Nov 2022 12:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2687152 A dog sitting next to a pile of laundry and a washing machine.

I’ve ruined so many items of clothing in the washer and/or dryer. My sweet mother-in-law insists on buying me “hand-wash only” pieces, and only now at the respectable age of 38 am I responsible enough to heed the tags’ instructions.

But I came from the camp of throwing (almost) everything together into the washing machine, using cold water, and just seeing what happened. Sometimes the result was a ruined blouse. Many of you can probably relate.

But with age comes wisdom, and now we know that sometimes taking a few extra moments to read the tag can save us a lot of headaches and money. However, tag instructions don’t always cover everything. Read on to find out how you should handle laundry day if you have a furry friend who sheds, plus a few other clothing items you should always hand wash or take to the dry cleaners for best results.

1. Pet Hair-Covered Clothing

If you’re a dog or cat owner, you’re likely to experience some level of pet hair on your clothing (unless you have a non-shedding dog or cat, in which case lucky you). You would probably think it’s fine to just throw your pet hair-covered clothes into the wash, but sadly, that’s not the case.

It might be smooth sailing for a little while, but over time the pet hair could clog drains and put stress on your home’s plumbing. The hair will also clump together and stick to the walls of the washer. It’s all pretty gross, but the solution is easy enough. Simply use a lint roller or masking tape on clothing and vacuum as much pet hair as possible from bedding (yours or your pet’s) prior to washing.

RELATED: 6 Common Laundry Mistakes You’re Probably Making & How To Fix Them

2. Swimsuits

Be gentle with your swimwear! The agitation of the washing machine can stretch the fabric, damage the strings, and fade the color of your swimsuit. The dryer in particular is a no-go because it will quickly ruin the elasticity of the fabric. Your tankini will fare much better over the long run if you hand-wash it instead.

3. Certain Delicate Fabrics

There are certain types of fabric you never want to throw in the washer. Cashmere, wool, velvet, lace, leather, and suede are a few obvious ones. But clothing that’s been embroidered or that has other similar decorative elements should likely be hand-washed or even dry-cleaned, depending on the fabric.

4. Stains From Flammable Liquids

You should forego the washing machine if you find yourself with a stain from gasoline, mineral oil, acetone, or another flammable substance on your clothing. First, spot-treat the stain, and then hand-wash and lay flat to dry.

5. Sweaters

To keep your sweaters looking their best, it might be okay to wash them occasionally on a gentle cycle. But hand-washing and laying them flat to dry will likely keep them at their peak coziness. And of course, fold them after they’re dry—never hang them!

Snail Mucin Is An Ancient Skincare ‘Miracle’ For Quenching Dry Skin And Fighting Signs Of Aging https://www.suggest.com/snail-mucin-skincare-benefits/2686871/ Wed, 09 Nov 2022 12:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2686871 COSRX and Peach Slices snail mucin products against a yellow background

We’ve experienced innumerable skincare fads in the past several years. From extravagant 7-step routines to skincare fasting, skin cycling, and various gadgets, it can be hard to keep up with the latest trends.

Along with various products and regimens, there’s always a new “better” skincare ingredient that promises to do more than the last. Some ingredients fade away as quickly as they appear (much like dark spots with a good vitamin C serum). Others have more staying power—hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and retinol probably aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

RELATED: Under-Eye Bags Run In My Family, And With This Vitamin C Eye Cream You Wouldn’t Know

But the newest “fad” actually has its origins in Ancient Greece. And now, in 2022, snail mucin has made a resurgence as a skincare ingredient. And yes, it’s exactly what you’re thinking.

What Is Snail Mucin?

Snail mucin is an ingredient that re-entered the mainstream in Korean skincare in the early 2000s. But way, way before that, ancient Greeks knew of the healing and moisturizing properties of snail slime and used it to reduce inflammation. Yup, that trail of slime excreted by those cute little garden dwellers can now be found in toners, serums, and moisturizers.

If you’re a little weirded out, you’re not alone. It’s not an ingredient that sounds very appealing, but you can add it to a growing list of unusual skincare—bird poop, algae, and ambergris, anyone? Regardless of its gross-out factor, snail mucin has been hyped up for good reason.

The Skin Benefits Of Snail Mucin

We love a product that is a multi-tasker, which is why we love the many skin benefits of snail mucin. As the ancient Greeks discovered, the moisturizing and healing properties of snail mucin makes it great for dry, irritated skin.

What’s more, snail mucin has been found to be an effective anti-aging ingredient. Research has shown that not only does snail mucin keep skin hydrated and glowing by preventing water loss, but it can also aid in collagen restoration.

One 2015 study found that participants who used a face cream containing 80% snail mucin showed “statistically significant differences between baseline and 4 weeks after applying the cream in terms of wrinkles, skin elasticity, dermal density, and skin tightening.”

If you’re curious to give this ancient healing potion a try, check out some of our favorite picks.

If you’re looking to incorporate snail mucin into your routine, the COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence is a great place to start for any skin type. Use this serum on damp skin after cleansing and toning (be sure to finish with a moisturizer) to target signs of aging like wrinkles, dryness, and dehydrated skin.

Reviews claim that it’s safe for sensitive skin, and one reviewer called it “literal magic.” This serum has gone viral on TikTok and even my editor vouches for its ability to fade dark spots.

The COSRX Advanced Snail Radiance Dual Essence contains 74.3% snail mucin and 5% niacinamide. Simply blend these two powerhouse essences together and press them onto the skin to address issues like dullness, dryness, and uneven skin texture.

As we’ve mentioned, snail mucin is ultra-hydrating, which makes it a no-brainer for those with dry skin. The Peach Slices Snail Rescue All-in-One Moisturizer is an ultra-lightweight moisturizer that contains 95% snail mucin. Additional ingredients include other Korean skincare favorites: cica, which calms redness and irritation, and birch juice, which brightens and evens out skin tone.

Great for acne-prone skin, this Peach Slices Snail Rescue Blemish Busting Toner brightens dark spots, deeply hydrates, and repairs the skin. Formulated with hyaluronic acid and cica along with snail mucin, this toner will have your skin looking bright and clear in no time.

Root Clipping Is The Easy, Heatless Way To Add Extra Volume To Your Mane https://www.suggest.com/how-to-root-clipping-hair-volume/2686699/ Sat, 05 Nov 2022 20:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2686699 a woman looks in the mirror and brushes her long straight gray hair

If you want to add volume to your hair (I mean, who doesn’t!?) there’s a simple and unexpected technique that’s making the viral rounds. It doesn’t involve hairspray (like the one vetted by Julia Roberts), and it’s not a shampooing technique, nor a no-poo product.

It’s called root clipping, and it’s a heatless hair trend that thankfully also does not involve cutting your hair. It’s probably already taking over your scroll, and it might be what you need to get that extra boost, especially if you have curly or wavy hair.

What Is Root Clipping?

Root clipping involves placing hair clips, either metal or plastic, at the base of your scalp just after washing on. Simply add the clips to damp strands and let the hair dry.

RELATED: Brooke Shields Loves This Instant Volumizing Spray That Has Been A Celeb Hairstyling Secret For Years

For best results, social media devotees advise using metal clips on fine hair, and plastic ones on thicker hair. Metal clips have a gentler grip, whereas the plastic versions are stronger and can hold thicker and more textured hair. Use a volumizing spray on the roots before attaching each clip close to the scalp.

To achieve max volume, avoid heavy creams or other hair products near the roots—they can weigh the hair down. Let the hair air dry in the clips, or if you’re pressed for time, use a hair dryer on the “cool” setting to speed the process along.

Should You Try Root Clipping?

This technique is best for curly and wavy hair, but it’s worth a shot for those with straight hair. It may not give mega-volume for those with straight hair—you might need a blowout for that. But it will likely have some effect, plus it’s basically free minus the cost of clips.

When removing the clips, be super gentle. Yanking on them could cause breakage or frizz. Also note that the more clips you use, the more volume you will likely achieve.

Avoid root clipping if you have an irritated or inflamed scalp. The clips could pull on and irritate the scalp. Otherwise, root clipping is fair game for most. We’re up for any hair trend that gives our hair a break from heat damage and adds volume.

Have A Double Lip Line? This Genius Lip Lining Trick Is A Complete Game Changer https://www.suggest.com/prominent-vermilion-border-lip-lining-tip/2685144/ Tue, 01 Nov 2022 20:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2685144 Woman applying red lipstick

There is no denying the power of the perfect lipstick shade to give you a serious mood boost. Whether you lean towards a fiery red, love bold purples and blues, or choose shades more au naturel, adding a bit of definition on the lips helps any makeup look feel complete.

Yet for some of us, applying lipstick and a corresponding lip liner can just feel off. While other women seem to get an envy-worthy pout, you might feel highlighting your lips somehow feels like “too much” on your face.

If that’s the case, you could be dealing with something called a “double lip line.”

A double lip line happens when you have a prominent vermilion border. This is the line just above the portion that connects the lip tissue to the rest of your face.

In effect, it looks like the border of your lip and the skin just above it are two separate lines. Think of celebs like Rihanna, Gigi Hadid, and SZA—they all have noticeable double lip lines.

RELATED: Here’s How To Find The Perfect Nude Lipstick No Matter Your Skin Tone

If you avoid lip liner altogether or place your lip liner on the vermilion border, the result can make your lips look larger and less contained. Luckily, TikTok creator @sola_victoria has the perfect tip.

“I’m going to basically line the inner perimeter of my lipline. By doing this on the inside, I’m less likely to make my lips look bigger because my lips are already full,” Śola said in her TikTok video, which has over 78K views.

So simple, yet the difference is quite noticeable!

In her video, Śola chose a neutral shade lip liner that is similar to her skin tone. In a note on the video, she detailed “using a liner color that is on your undertone range but deeper in a good start.”

Śola opted to use a NYX slim lip pencil, widely regarded among many makeup enthusiasts as a great, affordable liner that goes on smoothly and provides natural-looking definition.

To complete your look, simply fill in with your lipstick of choice. We’re personally big fans of Maybelline’s Super Stay Ink Crayon Lipstick, which one Suggest editor has ranked as her top long-lasting lipstick. Both smudge and transfer-resistant, the creamy matte crayon also comes in over 30 stunning shades.

If you don’t follow Śola, she is a great add. Her channel is full of helpful beauty videos, especially for beginners. Her tutorials are approachable and easy to follow, and she always provides great context (like her definition of a double lip line). We highly recommend!

Getting Headaches With The Recent Weather Change? It Could Be Due To Barometric Pressure https://www.suggest.com/headaches-caused-by-barometric-pressure/2685638/ Tue, 01 Nov 2022 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2685638 A woman with long gray hair frowns and looks out the window

Lately, I’ve noticed more people in my life (myself included) complaining of headaches, sinus pressure, and migraines. Family and friends in different states as well as those who live nearby all have one thing in common: Their headaches are getting worse and happening more frequently. So, what’s causing these symptoms?

Migraines and headaches have many causes: Lifestyle factors, food triggers, and stress can all contribute. And it’s no secret we’ve collectively experienced a fair amount of stress in the past few years.

But the recent headache spike might actually be thanks to the changing seasons and fluctuations in barometric pressure—or at least it’s yet another headache-causing layer on top of everything else.

What Is Barometric Pressure?

Barometric pressure is the measurement of air pressure in the atmosphere. It’s the weight of air molecules above any given point on the Earth. It’s measured by a barometer, and it changes constantly. The measurement will be different depending on where the reading takes place.

When the barometric pressure is high, the result is typically better weather. And as the barometer falls, the weather can become more volatile—the lower the pressure, the more intense the storm.

RELATED: Girlfriend Collective’s Latest Cold-Weather Line Is Not Only Cozy AF, It’s Revolutionary—Here’s Why

Geographic locations with higher altitudes tend to have overall lower barometric pressure. You’ve likely heard climbers refer to the “thinner air” of mountainous regions.

People sometimes comment on how it’s more difficult to breathe, they feel dizzier, and/or they may feel more fatigued at higher altitudes. Conversely, it can be easier to breathe by the ocean (or at sea level) because the barometric pressure is higher.

Fluctuations in barometric pressure are more common in some parts of the U.S. than in others. Cities in places like Hawaii, California, and Connecticut have fewer fluctuations in barometric pressure.

The barometric pressure also changes as the seasons change. Spring and fall typically have more variation in barometric pressure, while fall brings cooling weather patterns and a drop in barometric pressure.

Typically, when the barometric pressure is steady, there won’t be much change in the weather. When the barometer drops suddenly, a storm could be headed your way.

Barometric Pressure’s Effect On The Body

Some people feel like they can predict the weather because their bodies react to changes in barometric pressure. If the phrase, “My knees can predict the weather,” is becoming a part of your vernacular, you likely already know some of the ways barometric pressure can affect the body.

When the barometric pressure drops, the shift in pressure between the air in our sinuses and the atmosphere can trigger pain, including various types of headaches.

Sudden drops in barometric pressure can cause sinus headaches, migraines, joint and muscle pain, blood pressure changes, fatigue, asthma, allergies, and even blood sugar fluctuations. Your knees (or other joints, muscles, and scars) hurt when the barometric pressure drops because it causes the tissue to swell and can irritate the nerves surrounding the tissue.

Symptoms of a sinus headache include pain and pressure in the cheek, brow, and/or forehead. Pressure or pain can also be exacerbated when you bend down or lie down. It can also include a stuffy nose and fatigue. Migraine symptoms can include throbbing, sensitivity to light, nausea, and nasal congestion, among others.

How To Combat Barometric Pressure Headaches

It’s always important to stay hydrated, and that’s especially true when battling a headache or migraine.

Natural home remedies for sinus pressure and headaches include using a humidifier, using a saline spray, and elevating your head when you sleep. Getting enough sleep (if you can) is important too. Over-the-counter pain medication and decongestants may work well enough for sinus and pressure headaches.

But you may need to see a doctor if headaches become frequent and intense, or if you feel like you are having migraines. You may require prescription medications and the doctor may want to rule out other causes of your symptoms.

It’s also important to exercise a few days a week, eat a balanced diet, and avoid skipping meals. Relaxation techniques, yoga, and meditation can also help prevent some symptoms of headaches and migraines.

What’s Your Favorite Cher Decade? Now You Can Get A Fragrance To Match https://www.suggest.com/cher-body-spray-for-every-decade/2685385/ Mon, 31 Oct 2022 19:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2685385 Cher recreating her classic '80s look in 2010

In the mid-nineties, a few years before her major comeback album Believe, I dressed as ’60s-era Cher for Halloween. Towering over the other fourth graders, with my long dark hair and my trusty sidekick Sonny (Sara) by my side, we were something to see. I mean, we were probably the best (only?) 10-year-old Sonny and Cher Western Kentucky had experienced.

If you, too, are a Cher fan, you likely have a favorite Cher decade. There are so many iconic looks to choose from, everything from her flower child days of the ’60s to her teased air and racy fishnet jumpsuit in the late ’80s.

RELATEDHow Olivia Newton John’s Style Influenced A Generation Of Gen X Women

She’s been a fashion and beauty icon forever, and now she has a new line of fragrances released in partnership with Scent Beauty: Decades.

Turn Back Time With These Body Mists

Cher’s Decades Couture body mists are unisex and use sustainably-sourced formulas. Experience all four of Cher’s Decade’s perfumes or pick your favorite decade.

Cher ’60s Couture Body Mist has base notes of patchouli, just like much of the ’60s. It also has a base of amber and top notes of bergamot and clove. It’s warm, spicy, and bold, just like Cher.

The middle notes or heart (of stone) of Cher’s ’70s Decades body spray is saffron. This woody, earthy scent is accompanied by top notes of cardamom and base notes of musk. It’s a scent that can be worn daily without feeling overpowering or too intense.

The ’80s brought about an Oscar win for Cher. She’s just one Tony award away from the coveted EGOT. And although this body mist won’t help her get to EGOT status, it might win some awards of its own. Cher’s ’80s Couture body spray is fresh and floral with notes of mandarin and honeysuckle. The heart of the mist is gardenia.

Lastly, Cher’s ’90s Couture is a fresh and fruity scent. With top notes of peach nectar and jasmine and base notes of sandalwood, this body mist embodies the ’90s.

An Amazon customer said, “Initially, I had only purchased the ’90s spray … I loved it so much that I decided to buy the other three as well! They all smell so good.”

So, if you want to turn back time and relive one of your favorite decades, these Cher body mists won’t disappoint!

Julia Roberts Credits This Instant Volumizing Spray For Giving Her Camera-Ready Confidence https://www.suggest.com/julia-roberts-serge-normant-hair-spray/2685845/ Sat, 29 Oct 2022 16:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2685845 Close-up of Julia Roberts smiling with wavy hair

Those of us with thin, limp, listless hair have been jealous of Julia Roberts’ voluptuous, bouncy hair for decades.

From her major hair reveal in Pretty Woman to her cascading wedding up-do in Steel Magnolias we’ve watched on in envy. And those curls in Mystic Pizza, forget about it!

She’s tried out tons of different hairstyles, but her hair looks the best (in my humble opinion) when it’s got some oomph. The hair, coupled with that smile, and that enormous amount of talent just seems unfair.

RELATED: Recreate Julia Roberts’ Voluminous Waves With This One Simple Tool

However, she recently let us in on a secret. She shared her favorite texturizing spray in a post on Instagram. According to her caption, the spray was giving her some major confidence (and volume) before an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

This texturizing spray is loved by other celebs too, likely because it was created by celebrated celebrity hairstylist Serge Normant. Sarah Jessica Parker, Gisele Bundchen, and Cindy Crawford are a few of his other A-list clients.

The texturizing spray is part of Serge Normant’s Dream Big Collection which also includes a shampoo, conditioner, and volumizing mousse.

The award-winning volumizing spray is formulated with white lupine protein and zeolite minerals giving it a lightweight feel. Best for a touseled, undone look, the volumizing spray is made especially for those with thinning and dry hair.

In Robert’s Instagram post, eagle-eyed fans spotted a smaller red bottle next to the blue volumizing spray. The Serge Normant Finishing Hair Oil nourishes and smooths the hair, especially hair that’s on the drier side. Spray onto the hair after using the volumizing spray.

Normant is a big fan of the undone style, so much so that he did Megan Markle’s wedding hair in a sophisticated, and somewhat controlled “messy” bun.

To get a tousled but controlled look like Roberts or Markle, Normant’s volumizing spray will give a touchable hold and immediate volume and texture. Lightly scented with ylang-ylang, jasmine, and amber, Serge Normant’s Volumizing Spray is paraben-free, cruelty-free, and majorly hydrating.

One Amazon customer said, “I love that this spray is lightweight and holds my waves without frizz in the humidity. So many others leave my hair feeling stiff, but Dream Big enhanced the texture of my natural waves and felt smooth, with a scent, too.”
