Jeopardy! champion Jake DeArruda ended his time on the show after winning three games. Though he walked away with nearly $70,000 to his name, he also left the game with a slightly embarrassing statistic. The champ never correctly guessed any of the Final Jeopardy clues, which ultimately proved to be his undoing.

DeArruda, a delivery dispatcher originally from Ludlow, Vermont, won $22,797 on his first day even though he answered the Final Jeopardy clue incorrectly. The category was “World Cinema,” and the clue read, “The 2007 biopic called La Môme in France, meaning ‘The Kid’, was released in the U.S. under this other French title.” Although La Vie en rose was the correct answer, DeArruda and the other two players responded incorrectly.

The next day, DeArruda won again without answering the final clue correctly. The category was “Word Origins” and again, the returning champ and two other contestants were wrong. The final clue said, “Originally relating to a story of suffering, this word now more commonly refers to strong emotion of any kind.” The correct response was passion, as opposed to DeArruda’s mortal, but he still added another $25,197 to his winnings.

Deja vu continued for DeArruda on the third day. Again, all three contestants answered the final clue incorrectly. Only this time, the champ couldn’t be caught. The final clue read, “5 U.S. states have 6-letter names; only these 2 west of the Mississippi River border each other.” Of course, the correct response was Oregon and Nevada—DeArruda only guessed Kansas and bet $333.

DeArruda finally ended his unique three-day streak after winning $68,661. Although the champ entered the final round with the lead, he lost because one of the players finally knew the answer to the final clue! The contestants were told, “Published in 2011, P.D. James’ final novel, Death Comes to Pemberley, was a sequel to this novel from 200 years earlier.” Again, DeArruda answered incorrectly, but Patti Palmer, a bookseller and retired teacher, obviously knew that the book was Pride and Prejudice.

Lucky for us, DeArruda has already blogged about his time on Jeopardy! Although he doesn’t mention answering the final clue as a strategy, he does share that going into the final round was his best chance, especially since he was up against 6-day champion, Troy Meyer. “I know that it’s difficult to out-know Troy,” the dispatcher admitted, “so beating him would come down to being aggressive, catching a break or two and probably leading entering [Final Jeopardy].”

DeArruda’s strategy worked until one other contestant finally answered the final clue correctly. Then again, maybe DeArruda was on to something because winning $68,661 is a great three-day total!

Shania Twain Brought New Meaning To The Word ‘Cowgirl’ With Grammys Red Carpet Look https://www.suggest.com/shania-twain-brought-new-meaning-word-cowgirl-grammys-red-carpet-look/2722970/ Mon, 06 Feb 2023 21:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2722970 Shania Twain smiling in a black leather top with long bright red hair

We didn’t think anyone could outdo Pharrell’s big hat moment at the 56th Grammy Awards in 2014, but Shania Twain has proved us wrong! At the 65th Grammy Awards, Twain came out to play in an outfit that brought new meaning to the word “cowgirl.”

On February 5, 2023, Twain wowed fans with a one-of-a-kind white and black ensemble. All eyes were on the musician as she took the red carpet by storm in a head-to-toe glittery black and white polka dotted suit. The outfit included a longline blazer and enormous bell bottom pants that grazed the ground.

If a suit with large sequined polka dots wasn’t enough of a statement piece, the award-winning singer opted to top off her fun outfit with a matching sky high hat! Complementing the playful look, Twain donned a super long red wig with matching cherry red lipstick. The only place where the singer kept it simple was with her jewelry, if you can call diamond accessories by Messika basic.

However, the whimsical suit designed by young British-American designer Harris Reed stole the show. It’s no surprise since the 26-year-old designer is already taking the fashion industry by storm. The revolutionary creator has not only worked with Twain but also with one of her biggest fans, Harry Styles.

The polka dot suit was released in the fall as part of a collection. According to Reed, the suit centers “around community, collaboration and all the incredible individuals that it takes to create safe spaces for everyone to feel their most authentic selves.”

During a red carpet interview, Twain shared that she chose the incredible piece because she “just fell in love with the fun” of the suit. Turns out, the singer is all about having fun in her 50s and that includes being on the red carpet. When asked if the red carpet ever gets old, she said no, “It’s an opportunity to wear fun clothes! I love it … I just love the whole spirit of all of it.”

Twain attended the Grammys to present the award for Best Country Album and “to represent country music” as she said on the red carpet. Plus, the singer recently released her new album, Queen of Me. In the spirit of having fun, the artist referred to this as her “cheer myself up album.”

From her new album to her playful polka dot suit, Twain is certainly spreading cheer!

Martha Stewart Shared A Filter-Free Selfie And We Need To Know Her Skincare Regimen ASAP https://www.suggest.com/martha-stewart-shared-filter-free-selfie-skincare-regimen-asap/2722206/ Sun, 05 Feb 2023 21:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2722206 Martha Stewart smiles in all-white outfit

Martha Stewart can teach us all more than how to make perfect scrambled eggs. During a recent visit to the hair salon, the businesswoman shared a filter-free selfie, and WOW! We can’t get over how amazing her skin looks!

At 81 years old, how does Stewart do it? The interior designer credits “a mostly dry January and pilates every other day” for her incredible skin. But we suspect that her skincare routine also plays a role in her flawless complexion.

Thankfully, Stewart mentions the products she can’t live without on her website. The lifestyle icon stresses that it’s not just what products you use but also when and how you use them.

An early riser, Stewart begins her daily routine at 5 a.m. with a face mask that sits for 30 minutes. Her top choice is Yon-Ka Gommage 305, a gentle facial peel that clarifies the skin and reduces redness. Since it’s perfect for any skin type, this magical mask renews the skin and makes it look brighter than ever.

When she’s looking for something a bit more comprehensive, she reaches for the Mario Badescu Super Collagen Mask. This collagen and clay-based mask tightens, purifies, and nourishes skin of all types while reducing the appearance of lines and making skin look more vibrant.

After the face mask sits for 30 minutes, Stewart jumps into the shower and then chooses products based on how her skin feels that day. A frequent choice is Mario Badescu Facial Spray. Simple, gentle, and effective, the facial spray is the perfect way to achieve smooth and refreshed skin.

When it comes to serums, Stewart is a firm believer in layering. One of her favorite treatments is SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Serum. This vitamin C serum protects skin from the environment while reducing the appearance of lines.

Another go-to for Stewart is the Mario Badescu Vitamin C Serum. The brightening serum uses Vitamin C, collagen, and lavender oil to reveal a luminous look for all skin types. It’s also known to reduce lines, scars, and tighten skin.

Stewart also blessed us with a third serum to try: BioEffect EGF Day Serum. This wrinkle-fighting treatment is ultra-hydrating and environmentally friendly. In fact, the serum only has 7 ingredients that are grown in the company’s ecologically-engineered greenhouses.

While Stewart’s skin may look superhuman, even she’s not immune to the sun. Her favorite sunscreen is SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50.

The lightweight product is water-resistant and boasts broad-spectrum sun protection while boosting the skin’s radiance. Stewart applies it right before going outside for maximum effectiveness.

After spending the day in the sun, it’s important to moisturize. Stewart most frequently opts for Yon-Ka Pamplemousse because it helps dry and dull skin regain its radiance.

She also uses Mario Badescu Revitalin Moisturizer, which visibly brightens and improves dull skin with allantoin and vitamin E.

With such a great skincare routine, Stewart shows us that age doesn’t matter when it comes to an incredible complexion. You just need a few good products!

‘A Level Of Disrespect We’d Become Accustomed To’: Danny DeVito Played The Perfect Cruel Prank On His Co-Stars During ‘It’s Always Sunny’ https://www.suggest.com/danny-devito-level-disrespect-accustomed-to-played-perfect-cruel-prank-co-stars-its-always-sunny/2721723/ Sun, 05 Feb 2023 17:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2721723 Danny DeVito sitting between Charlie Day and Rob McElhenney on stage during a panel

The cast of the FX series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia doesn’t just keep the jokes going on screen. Some of the best moments happened off the set for the actors. In fact, in the early years of the series, DeVito played the perfect cruel prank on his co-stars that still has them in stitches.

On The Always Sunny Podcast, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, and Rob McElhenney relive some of the best moments from the show. In a recent episode, the three shared that one of the most memorable moments happened off-set between them and DeVito.

Day explained that they were staying at a hotel in Washington D.C. before a screening of the show. “I think FX pays for the flight and the hotel. And we get to the hotel and they say, ‘Oh, we’re so sorry.’” Apparently, the staff said only one room had been booked for them.

Sadly, the stars quickly believed that FX had only paid for a single room for all of them. “It didn’t surprise us,” Day recounted. “It was so early in the show, and we were such a low budget thing. We were like, ‘Oh man. They’re sticking us all in one room together?’”

The hotel staff even took it a step further and apologetically told the cast that every other room was booked; they were going to have to sleep in the only room available. Looking at McElhenney, Day remarked, “I remember you were very unhappy.” McElhenney concurred and said, “I do not handle those situations well.”

Not only had they all just gotten off a long flight, McElhenney also felt disrespected. Still, the three actors gave in to the hotel staff’s request to at least take a look at the room. Once they entered the room, things got real when the hotel staff explained, “We have a cot set up in the corner.” To their horror, there actually was a cot waiting for one of them!

“It was a level of disrespect we had become accustomed to,” Howerton acknowledged. Finally, just before the exhausted actors barged out of the room, DeVito popped out of the closet. The three actors realized they had been pranked by the best.

The thing is, the prank never could have happened without the great acting by the hotel staff. Plus, even though they were four seasons into the series by this time, McElhenney recalled, “Everywhere we went, nobody knew the show … The suggestion that all four of us would stay in the same room was not that crazy.”

Even so, getting pranked by DeVito is worth it!

Why Did ‘Jeopardy!’ Use This Bizarrely Easy Category? It Felt Like An ‘SNL’ Joke https://www.suggest.com/why-did-jeopardy-use-bizarrely-easy-category-it-felt-like-snl-joke/2721590/ Sun, 05 Feb 2023 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2721590 screenshot of Ken Jennings looking serious hosting Jeopardy

Although the quiz show is more challenging than most other game shows, Jeopardy! writers chose to go with a ridiculously easy category recently. It was so simple that my young kids could have answered the clues correctly. In fact, it almost felt like we were watching an SNL skit with Will Ferrell as Alex Trebek.

In the episode that aired on January 24, 2023, the Jeopardy! round included a category with the title “What Season Is It?” Although fans of the show may have assumed that the category would include fun and challenging clues, the audience was disappointed to find that the category was simply about the four seasons. That’s right. Every correct response was either winter, spring, summer, or fall.

Although the answers could have included a unique take on baseball season or even tax season, the writers apparently kept it as simple as possible. In fact, since there are only four seasons but five clues in the category, one season was repeated. Fall (or autumn) was the correct response for both the $400 clue, “Olympic Peninsula Apple & Cider Festival,” and the $1000 clue, “Duck hunting season (not wabbit season) starts in Louisiana & Minnesota.”

Even if the clues in the category were uber difficult, contestants still had a one in four chance of responding with the correct season. Honestly, even preschool-age kids can name the four seasons, which means that it’s a no-brainer category for Jeopardy! players.

Since the quiz show provided such an effortless category to contestants, we’re wondering if SNL writers actually wrote the clues. After all, it seemed more like the hilarious skits where the celebrities were so dumb they couldn’t even name numbers. With the actual Jeopardy! approaching its 40th season—nearly 9,000 episodes of the quiz show and its spinoffs have aired so far—we’ll give the team a pass for the occasional boring category.

Naomi Watts’ 40-Year-Old Throwback Shows She’s Always Advocated For Confidence About Body Changes https://www.suggest.com/naomi-watts-throwback-shows-always-advocated-confidence-about-body-changes/2721872/ Sat, 04 Feb 2023 21:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2721872 Naomi Watts smiles in cream-colored dress

Naomi Watts has always been open about her experiences with hormonal changes and encourages all women to be confident in their own skin. In fact, she’s been an advocate for positive change in this arena for over 40 years!

Watts just posted a fantastic side-by-side image on her Instagram. On the left, we see a throwback photo from a tampon commercial she did as a teenager with the caption “When can I start using tampons?” On the right appears a photo of the actress in a similar pose, asking a similar question about lubricant.

Watts, 54, asked in the post, “Why is it that we can talk about periods and puberty with ease, but when it comes to menopause, and yes, dryness… we all get a little skittish…. I created this post in an attempt to capture a woman’s hormonal bookends.”

However, as women age, so do their bodies. For far too long, menopause has been a taboo topic, but Watts wants to change that. In reference to the current-day photo of herself, Watts said, “[This] is a take on what it could look like if we tackled midlife hormonal challenges with the same kind of boldness.”

The actress is no stranger to hormonal changes in midlife. In fact, Watts experienced perimenopause in her 30s and was shocked to find a lack of resources and community on the topic.

She decided to do something about that by talking openly about her experience. As she said in the post, “When it comes to the ‘adult version’ of hormonal changes we’re thrust into the shadows of secrecy and shame… with a total lack of information, plus misinformation!”

But the actress is more than just talk. In fact, Watts founded Stripes, a company that believes that menopause isn’t a dirty word. The brand offers resources, education, and most importantly, a community to women who are experiencing perimenopause and menopause.

After all, as Watts pointed out, “More than 1 billion people worldwide will be menopausal by 2025.” That’s a lot of people who can support one another and break the stigma of menopause.

We’re thrilled to see Watts come full circle from promoting period protection as a teen to providing resources and a place for women to openly talk about menopause. It’s a cause we’re eager to get behind.

Kate Middleton’s Uncharacteristically Bold Earrings Had A Secret Meaning https://www.suggest.com/kate-middleton-uncharacteristically-bold-earrings-had-secret-meaning/2721788/ Sat, 04 Feb 2023 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2721788 Kate Middleton smiles in closeup image while wearing pale pink scarf and burgundy jacket

Kate Middleton is a style icon who often sends subtle messages through her fashion choices and accessories. At a recent event, the Princess of Wales wore a pair of bold earrings that were a bit of a departure from her usual style. As it turns out, there was a reason for her choice.

Middleton looked stunning at a January 30 event she attended for the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood. The princess wore a bright red Alexander McQueen dress paired with some chunky silver earrings—which were noteworthy for their boldness as Middleton tends to keep her accessories understated.

(Eddie Mulholland – WPA Pool/Getty Images)

The earrings were made by Chalk, a design studio in London that creates unusual geometric jewelry. All of the studio’s items are handmade by architect Malaika, who loves fusing her love of design and buildings with jewelry.

Since all of Chalk’s pieces are influenced by architectural elements, the dangling pair donned by Middleton paid homage to the Royal Opera House of London.

According to the company, “The regal forms from the ornate details and geometry found within the Main stage auditorium ceiling of the Royal Opera House has been reimagined throughout this collaboration to create a timeless collection.”

The London landmark holds special meaning to Middleton and Prince William. The Royal Opera House was where Princess Diana surprised her husband, then-Prince Charles, by dancing on stage with ballet dancer Wayne Sleep.

The two danced a routine choreographed to “Uptown Girl” by Billy Joel in December 1985 that delighted fans, media, and of course Diana’s husband.

The earrings also represent Middleton’s dedication to sustainability and affordability. When the princess appears in public, she often sports items that are budget-friendly.

This time is no different since the gold and regency green earrings retail for £75.00 or roughly $92 dollars. Plus, the jewelry is made to order—which means less waste— and composed of naturally occurring elements such as walnut and gold.

Although it’s rare to see the princess wear such bold dangling earrings, she has donned this pair before. Back in June 2022, Middleton first wore them to the unveiling of the National Windrush Monument at London’s Waterloo Station. She sported them for a second time when she and her husband visited Elevate, a youth program in South London.

We love seeing the princess meld her passion for affordability and sustainability in pieces that have secret meanings. We’ll be on the lookout for the next symbolic fashion choice she makes!

Jennifer Aniston’s 5-Second Hair Hack To Get Major Volume Is An Oldie But Goodie https://www.suggest.com/jennifer-aniston-5-second-hair-hack-get-major-volume-is-oldie-but-goodie/2721227/ Fri, 03 Feb 2023 19:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2721227 Jennifer Aniston smiling in a black striped dress against a neutral background

Jennifer Aniston became a hair icon after debuting “The Rachel” bob on Friends nearly 30 years ago. The ’90s hairstyle that solidified Aniston as a hair legend was created by hairstylist Chris McMillan.

Since then, the actress has partnered with McMillan for all her hair looks, whether she’s rocking natural beachy waves hair or a sleek blowout. Recently, the actress revealed one technique by McMillan that gives major volume to any hair in just seconds.

Turns out, the secret to major volume is so simple that many of us have been doing it for years. In a quick Instagram reel, Anniston shared that her full-proof volumizing technique doesn’t require a stylist or expensive products. In fact, all you need is a hairdryer and hairspray.

Simply flip your hair upside down, spray with hairspray, shake your head, blow with a hair dryer while you continue to shake your hair, stand up, and voila, major volume!

It’s a technique that many of us who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s remember well. In fact, some people have been using it ever since! One person commented, “It’s really easy. We’ve been doing it since the ’80s.” Another Instagrammer shared that “everyone that lived through the ’80s” uses this tried and true technique.

After seeing the video, we wanted to know what products McMillan uses on Aniston. Thankfully, the stylist revealed in an interview with Vogue that Aniston’s go-to hairspray is Oribe Superfine Hairspray.

The hairspray offers “flexible, brushable, shiny-soft control” that’s perfect for adding volume to all hair types. Just remember to follow McMillan’s advice that less is more.

Another volumizing spray that’s popular with many celebrities is Serge Normant Volumizing Spray. Brooke Shields, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Meghan Markle are just a few stars who swear by the hair product. And it’s no wonder why! The weightless spray provides texture and volume to all hair types but is best for thinning and fine hair.

As for Aniston, Living Proof products are a brand she has raved about in the past. One fabulous hairspray the company offers is Living Proof Style Lab Control Hairspray.

The hairspray is lightweight, affordable, and delivers hold and shine that lasts throughout the day. It’s the perfect product to get Aniston’s look. Plus, Living Proof is committed to sustainability and certified cruelty-free by PETA, so you can also feel good about using their products.

Regardless of whether or not you’re going for “The Rachel” look, Aniston’s simple 5-second hack along with a quality hairspray is sure to give you the volume you’re looking for each and every day!

The Seafood Chowder On The Set Of ‘Titanic’ Was Laced With PCP, And It’s Still A Mystery Who Did It https://www.suggest.com/titanic-set-seafood-chowder-laced-with-pcp-still-mystery-who-did-it/2721441/ Fri, 03 Feb 2023 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2721441 Scene from 'Titanic' (1997) of Kate Winslet (L) and Leonardo DiCaprio slow dancing

Just like the ship itself, the movie Titanic appeared to be doomed while filming on location in Nova Scotia. During a meal break, the cast enjoyed seafood chowder that was reportedly so good, people went back for seconds and even thirds.

Soon after devouring the meal, 80 members of the cast and crew became ill and had to be hospitalized. Almost immediately, the shellfish was suspected as the culprit since it can contain “red tide,” a naturally occurring toxin that’s dangerous for people to consume. However, food poisoning wasn’t to blame as a health department investigation proved otherwise.

The Nova Scotia Department of Health confirmed the following day that the lobster chowder contained the hallucinogen PCP (per Vulture). At that point, health official Meredith Blake sent a letter to producer Jon Landau that said, “I have handed this investigation over to the Halifax Regional Police Service, who I’m sure will be in touch with you.”

Although the police investigated the incident, they were unable to find the culprit. Since there was no official word on who spiked the chowder or why, many theories began to surface.

Perhaps a disgruntled crew member spiked the chowder after being fired by the director. Maybe it was simply a prank that had more severe consequences than expected.

Then again, the CEO of the catering group suggested an interesting theory that someone may have just tried to start a “party thing” on the final night of filming in Nova Scotia (per Entertainment Weekly).

Although the case remains unsolved, there were some cast members who stayed away from the spiked chowder. Turns out, Kate Winslet and Leo Dicaprio were not on set during filming and didn’t touch the lobster chowder. Director James Cameron and actor Bill Paxton weren’t so lucky. They were just two of the many cast and crew who ate the spiked lunch.

Though Paxton often ordered takeout for his on-set meals, he made the mistake that night of eating the chowder because he was having “a good conversation with [director James] Cameron on the set.”

Shortly after, the actor regretted his decision when he started feeling the effects of the spike chowder and was taken to the hospital.

As he told Larry King, “Here’s 150 crew members stumbling into the emergency room at one o’clock in the morning at a very small hospital. Some people are freaking out; some people are conga dancing; some people are euphoric,” the actor recalled.

Since he was feeling fine enough amongst the chaos, Paxton returned to his trailer without treatment and soon felt better.

Thankfully, no one died or was even poisoned by the spiked chowder. However, the mystery will go on and on since the culprit has never been found.

Viral Clip Honestly And Hilariously Reminds Us Why February Is The Worst Month Of The Year https://www.suggest.com/viral-clip-honestly-hilariously-reminds-why-february-worst-month/2721017/ Thu, 02 Feb 2023 19:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2721017 Kevin Killeen speaks into news microphone while standing outside

It’s that time of year again when we’re smack dab in the middle of nowhere. Christmas and New Year’s are behind us, and spring isn’t even on the horizon. While we’re all waiting for winter to end, we can’t help but think of this hilarious clip of a St. Louis journalist reminding us why February is the worst month of the year.

Journalist Laments: ‘Even The Land Is Tired In February’

Although February is the shortest month of the year, it often feels like the longest. St. Louis journalist Kevin Killeen reminded us why this is in a hysterical viral clip. “[February is] an honest month,” he said. “It’s a month that doesn’t hold up life any better than it really is.”

Overlooking downtown St. Louis, Missouri, Killeen remarked about the haze of winter. “These buildings look like they don’t even have any lights in them during a workday.”

As he continued, Killeen shared that the area “looked like something great happened here but it’s over with, and that’s the way February is.”

It’s true. As we enter the stark winter month, we’ve all had enough of the cold, snow, and ice. But we know that February isn’t done with us yet. In fact, Killeen found proof of this after he left his downtown perch to “go check out February” in a parking garage.

“This says it all,” the journalist commented as he pulled a green umbrella with a floral design out of the trash. “Somebody on this February day has abandoned it with its broken shaft like a desperate flinging off of something that’s not true anymore. The expedition is getting desperate. People are throwing things aside.”

Killeen found even more desperation as he searched the streets for signs of life. As the journalist watched people cross, he noted how tired they looked. But it wasn’t just the citizens of downtown St. Louis who looked exhausted.

“Even the land is tired in February. Most of the birds who can afford it have gone to Florida,” Killeen accurately pointed out.

“And the trees that once cheered us are hard to look at this month,” he continued. “It’s as if there is some awful truth out there in the trees. It’s hiding in the branches.”

St. Louis Reporter Kevin Killeen Is Known For His Wit

This hysterical and on point account of February was given by Kevin Killeen, author of three humorous novels and a reporter for St. Louis radio station KMOX since 1995.

According to Killeen, he “was always getting in trouble for injecting humor into the news” so he picked up side projects that allowed him to showcase his dry wit.

Thanks to one of these side projects, “Whole ’nother Story,” Killeen gave the perfect description of the bleakest month of the year.

I Thought I Needed Subtitles Because I’m Old, But It Turns Out Everyone Does https://www.suggest.com/thought-needed-subtitles-because-old-but-turns-out-everyone-does/2720940/ Wed, 01 Feb 2023 21:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2720940 Image of woman on couch pointing remote at television

You’re in the middle of a movie. The climax of the film is happening and just as the lead character delivers a mind-blowing speech, the dialogue suddenly becomes garbled. You’re now on the edge of your seat (literally) because you’re trying to hear what’s being said. Even when you turn the volume up to max, you still can’t understand a single word.

So what do you do? Turn on the subtitles, of course. It’s something that’s become more and more common. Were our parents right when they told us that we’d lose our hearing by listening to music too loudly? Turns out, technology may be to blame.

Uptick In Subtitle Use ‘Doesn’t Have A Straightforward Answer’

For the past few years, subtitles have become a staple in my home. From TV comedy classics shows such as The Office to new Netflix releases like Stranger Things, subtitles have helped me finally pick up on dialogue I’ve missed for years.

Plus, as a mom of three, subtitles are a great and easy way to encourage my kids to read and pay attention to the show they’re watching.

Turns out, I’m not the only one who uses subtitles. In a recent survey from Vox, over 105,000 people responded and 57% said they use subtitles while watching TV shows and movies. It’s so commonplace that Austin Olivia Kendrick, a dialogue editor who uses subtitles herself, is often asked why we all use subtitles now.

“It doesn’t have a straightforward answer,” Kendrick said. “It’s very layered and very complex.” While that’s true, the dialogue editor shared that the main reason is due to technology (and not necessarily because we’re all getting old).

Over the past several decades, technology changes have improved microphones and moved sound recordings from analog to digital. Plus, sound engineers typically record a film’s sound for movie theaters, not for our smartphones.

In fact, some theaters carry Dolby Atmos which has 3D sound and up to 128 channels. If you’re not in the theater, you’re hearing a version that’s been downmixed from 128 channels to one or two channels. No wonder it’s hard to hear!

With all these technological “advances,” it’s no surprise that movies and TV shows sound different today. While our best options are to either connect to better speakers or simply continue using subtitles, at least we know that we’re all in this together.

‘Going Damp’ Is The Latest Trend In Mindful Drinking—Here’s Why It Works Better Than One Sober Month https://www.suggest.com/going-damp-latest-trend-mindful-drinking-why-it-works-better-sober-month/2720770/ Wed, 01 Feb 2023 19:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2720770 Overhead view of a woman's right hand holding a pink cocktail a pink surface

Now that Dry January is over, many people are sober-curious and wondering what to do after abstaining from alcohol last month. As more women become mindful drinkers, they’re starting to discover the “damp lifestyle.” Here’s what it’s all about and why it may work better than a sober month.

A ‘Damp Lifestyle’ Accounts For Moderation

In January 2022, TikToker Hana Danly decided to be a mindful drinker and coined the term “damp lifestyle.” It’s a moderate drinking technique that Danly opted for instead of going dry last January.

In the now viral video, the TikToker shared, “We talk about being sober. We talk about being drunk. But how do we successfully follow a ‘damp lifestyle?’”

@hana.elson

going to be posting more about this on the new insta bc it’s not easy but has helped my mental health SO much #fyp #howto #pov

For Danly, going damp has offered a drinking option that many people don’t discuss: moderation. In another video, Danly shared how this option is often overlooked in a society that promotes drinking alcohol.

“The damp lifestyle is internalizing the fact that drinking culture and your relationship with alcohol does not have to be black and white, all or nothing.”

@hana.elson

lots of new ppl since I’ve made one of these! So here’s another explanation of what “damp lifestyle” means to me now 🙂 #damplifestyle #balanced #drinkingculture

Since going damp is a lifestyle choice and not just a 31-day challenge, it may work better for people who aren’t addicted to alcohol and simply want to reduce their intake.

OBGYN Karina Celaya recently told InStyle, “Going damp may be helpful for those who want to find a middle ground, one that would allow for consumption of alcohol in moderation.”

According to a study published in Health Psychology, moderation can be a more effective way to decrease drinking than simply going cold turkey. In fact, one-third of people who try to do Dry January end up drinking at some point during the month.

It’s a lifestyle choice that more and more women are making. After a spike in alcohol use during COVID-19 lockdowns, many are coming to terms with their relationship with alcohol. Lauren Manaker, a 43-year-old registered dietician-nutritionist, is just one woman who escalated her alcohol intake during COVID-19.

Manker told InStyle, “I was getting in the habit of pouring a glass of wine every day around 5 p.m., and if I felt stressed, I would lean on wine to help myself unwind. Getting to the point where you need a drink is not OK,” she admitted. “I wanted to get away from that feeling.”

Even so, the dietician-nutritionist enjoys social drinking and “having a glass of wine with friends at happy hour or enjoying a spicy margarita on taco Tuesday.”

Once she opted for the “damp lifestyle,” Manaker recognized that she had been drinking out of habit and became more mindful about her alcohol consumption.

While Manaker wanted to rid herself of needing a drink, Danly started drinking less as a way to improve her mental health.

In the past year, the TikToker has had some major mental and physical health gains since living the “damp lifestyle.” Some of the domino effects she says she has experienced include better mental health, more energy, sleeping more, better skin, and being happier.

Although going damp has worked for her, Danly is quick to point out that this lifestyle isn’t for everyone. Some people do need to be sober due to alcoholism or alcohol use disorder. In fact, a recent study from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism shows that many Americans drink an unhealthy amount of alcohol.

For those who aren’t sober or working towards sobriety, the “damp lifestyle” is a great way to practice mindful living. Here are a few ways you can go damp this year.

Use Your Motivating Factor

Danly encourages everyone to know their motivating factor and focus on their why. For the TikToker, her why includes mental health struggles. She first went damp after realizing that alcohol was the “common denominator” when she had mental health challenges.

@hana.elson

#greenscreen making small changes for big results for the full year 🙂 #damplifestyle #dryishjanuary #resolutions

Start With One Or Two Small Goals

The TikToker also says that people should start with just a couple of small goals. For Danly, drinking water in between drinks, having only one alcoholic drink at a restaurant, and going to an event sober were small ways she began living the “damp lifestyle.”

Stick To Alcohol-Free Days And Times

Once you’re able to sustain your small goals, you can move on to bigger goals such as not drinking during the week, only drinking socially, and abstaining from hard liquor.

Compassion Is Key

With any change, offering yourself grace and compassion is necessary. Dr. Jill Carnahan, M.D. told InStyle, “Don’t be too hard on yourself if you fail to keep your commitment. If you are creating a new habit, it may take an average of many tries to successfully ingrain the new habit into your subconscious.”

If you’re sober-curious, trying out the “damp lifestyle” may just be the key to living more mindfully this year.

Ken Jennings Made A Hilarious Highbrow Joke During ‘Final Jeopardy!’ https://www.suggest.com/ken-jennings-made-hilarious-highbrow-joke-during-final-jeopardy/2720841/ Wed, 01 Feb 2023 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2720841 screenshot of Ken Jennings talking during the Final Jeopardy round

On January 24, Ken Jennings showed his personality to fans in the final round of Jeopardy! After revealing the correct response to the final clue, the host made a hilarious high-brow joke with his trademark dry wit.

In an episode that featured contestants Linda Napikoski, Joe Incollingo, and Troy Meyer, the category for the final clue was “Foreign-Born Authors.” Meyer had previously won three runaway games and was set to be a four-day champion. Spoiler alert: Meyer did win the game with a four-day total of $137,600.

After the players had 30 seconds to respond to the clue—“In the 1950s the New York Times said this author ‘is writing about all lust’ and his lecherous narrator ‘is all of us,’”—Jennings first asked Incollingo for his response. The contestant along with the other two players gave the correct response, “Who is Nabokov?” The answer referred to novelist Vladimir Nabokov.

But it was after revealing the answer to Incollingo that Jennings made the high-brow joke. “That’s right,” Jennings remarked. “A reference to Humbert Humbert, the creep who narrates Lolita.”

A creep indeed! If you know the book by Nabokov, Humbert is more than just a creep. He’s an older man who kidnaps and sexually abuses “Lolita,” a nickname he gives to a 12-year-old girl. In fact, the novel was so controversial in 1955 when it was released in France that America didn’t publish it until 1958.

Although the Jeopardy! audience didn’t respond to Jennings’ reference, plenty of YouTube fans commented on the video. As one viewer said, “Kudos to Ken for calling Humbert Humbert a creep. And ew to the NYTimes reviewer.”

Responding to the review in the clue, another fan said, “I’m sure it’s taken out of context, probably referencing the way ‘all of us’, especially in the U.S., obsess and lust over this or that, because yeah, wow, I’ve never heard anyone side with Humbert Humbert.” Other fans also called out the somewhat off-putting clue because “it’s not that hard not to relate with Humbert Humbert” is more than a little creepy considering the character’s central obsession with a pre-teen.

Obviously, Jennings was correct in referring to the narrator as a creep and poking fun at the Times commentary. Whether referring to a creep in a novel or dropping one of his other dry jokes, it’s always a treat to see the host’s personality shine through on the show.

Why More Couples Are Choosing Not To Have Children—No, It’s Not Because They Are Selfish https://www.suggest.com/why-more-couples-choosing-not-have-children-not-because-selfish/2720660/ Tue, 31 Jan 2023 21:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2720660 Illustration of a couple with arms around each other looking at the sky

For many people, choosing whether or not to have kids is difficult. It’s not a decision that’s typically taken lightly—which is certainly a cultural shift.

In the past, people didn’t necessarily choose to have kids; they were simply expected to do so. However, as gender norms become more fluid, societal expectations change, and more women have financial freedom, many people are opting out of parenthood.

COVID Is Not Fully To Blame

As an elder millennial, I’m part of the generation that is having fewer babies than any other in American history. A 2015 study from The Urban Institute found that from 2007–2012, birth rates declined by more than 15 percent for women in their 20s.

Since 2007, birth rates have continued to fall, and a COVID-19 baby bust even occurred in 2021. While the pandemic may be one reason why birth rates are on the decline, there are plenty of other factors at play.

Financial stress is one major reason why millennials are opting out of parenthood. According to a 2020 survey from Morning Consult, nearly 3 out of 5 millennials without children chose not to have kids because it’s just too expensive. From childcare costs to education and even basic everyday items such as groceries, raising a kid certainly takes a financial toll.

Plus, let’s not forget how much it costs just to have a baby! For couples and single parents, birthing costs can put a strain on their wallets. According to the University of Michigan, the average mother in the U.S. paid over $4,500 for labor and delivery in 2020—and that’s with health insurance!

Even when finances aren’t a struggle, some people choose to forego having kids due to environmental concerns and overpopulation. Although I’m a parent to three girls, I opted out of childbirth partially due to overpopulation concerns. Since there are plenty of children who already need a home, adopting domestically was the route I chose.

While overpopulation, famine, war, and the state of political affairs are just a few reasons why some choose to remain childless, many people remain childless because it makes them happier. Although this outlook is often seen as self-centered, it’s more than a valid response. In fact, some people are simply more fulfilled without the extra stress of parenting.

As it turns out, data proves this to be true. Behavioral scientist and happiness expert Paul Dolan has previously shared evidence that young women are happiest without children or a spouse. More than 50 years earlier, a 1977 study published by Carnegie Mellon University said that couples without children tended to be happier than those with children.

One person who admits to not having kids because she’s happy without them is author and journalist Anne Helen Petersen. The author shared on her own website that her primary reason for being childless is due to our society “being incredibly hostile to mothers and working mothers in particular.”

However, she went on to say, “The other reason is that I am also very happy without kids.” It’s a sentiment more and more people have.

While being childless makes some people happy, others opt out of parenthood due to their mental health. In fact, some millennials choose to remain childless because they don’t want to pass their genes to the next generation.

How Does Mental Health Factor Into The Decision?

When The Atlantic asked readers to divulge if their mental health has been a factor in deciding to have kids, one reader shared, “As an adult, I realize that I inherited [my mothers’] same level of anxiety—but I have spent a lifetime developing strategies and practices to manage it…Nevertheless, I am fairly certain, just based on how much I worry about our dogs, that having children would exacerbate my anxiety in ways I would probably not be able to control, and in a way that is likely to burden my children.”

Perhaps another reason that’s often overlooked is the way most people parent today. Instead of fitting a child into their life, parents often find themselves fitting themselves into their child’s schedule.

From soccer games to piano recitals and chess tournaments, parents often schlep their kids around in the family minivan for what feels like a never-ending road trip. Plus, it’s a daunting task for anyone to figure out how to dedicate so much of their time to a child, let alone multiple children.

The thing is, as more and more millennials and Gen Zers opt out of parenthood, there aren’t enough babies to keep up with the current rate of population growth. In 2020, the CDC released data showing that women now have 1.71 children, though the optimal number is 2.1 babies to maintain the population.

As millennials begin to enter midlife, only time will tell if Gen Z will pick up the slack to maintain America’s population. Then again, maybe a population decline is on the horizon.

At 44, Karen Elson Is The Stunning Face Of A New Gucci Campaign https://www.suggest.com/karen-elson-stunning-face-new-gucci-campaign/2720618/ Tue, 31 Jan 2023 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2720618 Karen Elson smiles in red dress with black undergarment peeking out

The fashion industry has always lauded the fountain of youth as the premiere beauty standard. From featuring the youngest models possible to gearing advertisements toward teens and tweens, the world of beauty and fashion often forgets that women of all ages are beautiful.

Thankfully, Gucci recognizes that women in their 40s are just as lovely as those in their 20s. The proof is in their new Gucci Cruise 2023 collection that features 44-year-old Karen Elson as the face of the new campaign.

Beauty Doesn’t Fade After Your 20s

We’re thrilled to see Gen X women such as Elson set the record straight and tell the fashion industry that beauty doesn’t stop after your 20s.

In the ad campaign, Elson is captivating in a retro-inspired silk turtleneck and wool skirt set by Gucci. The diagonal striped ensemble is a play on textures and patterns that Elson brings to life effortlessly.

Seeing Elson as the face of the campaign is refreshing since young models are often the chosen ones in the fashion industry. However, the supermodel is no stranger to the limelight. In fact, Elson began her modeling career as a teenager and appeared on the cover of Italian Vogue on her 18th birthday.

Since beginning her modeling career, Elson has walked the runway for designers such as Marc Jacobs, Versace, Dior, and, of course, Gucci. She’s also a musician and the ex-wife of Jack White, with whom she shares a daughter, Scarlett Teresa White, 16, and a son Henry Lee White, 15.

Could The Tides Be Turning?

Although Elson began her career in her teens, the fashion industry is slowly waking up to the fact that beauty is ageless. In fact, Elson is one of many Gen Xers to continue her modeling career into her 40s. Charlize Theron, 47, continues to model for Dior and became the face of Dior’s J’adore Parfum d’eau perfume in the fall of 2022.

Other supermodels, such as Cindy Crawford, continue to model in their 50s and even later in life. Crawford, 56, is both surprised and grateful that she is able to model in midlife. In a recent interview, Crawford admitted that when she began modeling, “There was no way [she] thought [she] would still be quote-unquote ‘modeling’ to this day.”

As supermodels in their 40s and 50s reign supreme as the faces of well-known fashion brands, we hope to see more and more Gen X women featured in the fashion industry.

How ‘Jeopardy!’ Producers Pick Which Story Contestants Tell About Themselves Before The Game https://www.suggest.com/how-jeopardy-producers-pick-which-story-contestants-tell-before-game/2720336/ Mon, 30 Jan 2023 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2720336 screenshot of a wide shot of the Jeopardy! stage with Ken Jennings speaking to contestants at their podiums

A hallmark of every Jeopardy! game is when contestants share a fun fact about themselves. Following the first commercial break, fans of the quiz show get an inside look at the players’ personal lives.

If you’re a fan of the show, you probably know that each contestant has about 30 seconds to share an interesting anecdote about themselves. But do you know how they end up choosing which story they end up sharing?

When asked how the producers choose which story a player will tell, the show’s contestant producer Corina Nusu told Mental Floss, “We send [the contestants] a huge package of documentation via email. Included is an info sheet that asks them to list five interesting facts about themselves.”

The questions are surprisingly open and serve as ways to make both big and small happenings interesting enough for the show. They include: What’s your most treasured possession? What’s your secret ambition? Any brushes with greatness?

With a total of 32 questions to choose from, the players’ answers help producers choose which stories will best connect with the audience. After the contestants respond, Nusu then writes a list of up to five stories for the fun fact portion of the show. Before his passing, Alex Trebek chose which story each player would share during taping.

Then on show day, Nusu preps the players to ensure that they are ready to share more about their fun facts with the host. “I sit and try to pretend I’m [the host] and ask them a question. ‘So, you’ve been skydiving?’ You can’t just say, ‘Yes.’ Tell me you’ve been to the Galapagos Islands…Were you in Poland? Don’t tell me yes, and you had a nice time. Remember to tell me your train got hijacked.”

Although topics vary, only grossly inappropriate or morbid subjects are off limits. Even so, Nusu shared that she tells players, “You probably shouldn’t talk about breaking the law.”

While it may be easy to come up with a handful of interesting facts, it can be difficult for players to come up with several stories especially when they win multiple games. After winning 20 games, Julia Collins admitted on Reddit that figuring out her fun fact each episode was far from fun for her. According to the Jeopardy! champion, “Coming up with ideas for that portion of the show is probably the hardest thing about being on the show.”

Although coming up with several personal fun facts may be challenging for players, we’re glad they make the effort. After all, it’s one of the best segments of the show.

All Of Christina Aguilera’s Most Aggressively Y2K Fashion Looks Featured Her Favorite Accessory https://www.suggest.com/christina-aguilera-most-aggressively-y2k-fashion-looks-featured-favorite-accessory/2719866/ Sun, 29 Jan 2023 21:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2719866 Christina Aguilera poses in magenta top with high bun

When Christina Aguilera came onto the music scene in the ’90s, she made waves with both her four-octave vocal range and her, cough, *unique* sense of style.

Although her sense of style has developed over the years, Aguilera has always enjoyed trying out various fashion looks. In fact, the Grammy Award winner told Elle, “I look back at the looks I’ve had over the years. I’m proud of myself that I had the courage to experiment with crazy hairstyles and some fashion things. Would I do it again? No. But that’s part of the learning process and getting from point A to point B.”

Turns out, many of her “point A” ensembles included some crazy hats. Let’s take a look!

On November 14, 2002, the musician appeared on MTV’s TRL for their “Spankin’ New Music Week.” The singer topped off her outfit with a fedora-inspired lavender hat.

Earlier that same year, Aguilera attended the MTV Music Awards in New York. As a presenter, the singer opted for a cream hat that tied her aggressive Y2K look together.

Then in December 2002, the singer made her way to the VH1 Big In 2002 Awards in Los Angeles in a black boho hat that matched her black suit.

On February 6, 2003, Aguilera attended the “Turn Up The Heat-Fight Global Warming” benefit concert in Los Angeles. This time, Aguilera opted to pair a baseball cap with her very low-rise camo pants.

When she attended the premiere of “8 Mile” at the Village Theatre in Westwood, California on November 6, 2002, Aguilera topped off her ensemble with an oversized striped newsboy cap.

Apparently the singer loved a good newsboy cap because she sported another version a few months later at the 30th Annual American Music Awards in Los Angeles on January 13, 2003.

True To Her Roots

Although Aguilera’s style has certainly changed over the years, she still loves to accessorize with a good hat. At the 2022 Latin Grammy Awards, Aguilera donned headwear on stage.

Earlier in the year, she even sported a glittery hat on Instagram as she thanked fans for a great summer tour. As Aguilera continues to experiment with her “point B” looks, we’re thrilled that her wardrobe still includes her favorite accessory.

Gabrielle Union’s Glitzy Gown Gave Us Major Flashbacks To This Forgotten Fashion Trend https://www.suggest.com/gabrielle-union-glitzy-gown-gave-major-flashbacks-forgotten-fashion-trend/2719382/ Fri, 27 Jan 2023 21:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2719382 Gabrielle Union smiles in closeup image against purple backdrop

Gabrielle Union sparkled on the red carpet for the January 19 premiere of Truth Be Told. Showing off a glitzy gown at the show’s season three premiere, Union gave us major flashbacks to the forgotten fashion trend of color blocking.

Color-Block Cuteness

(Jon Kopaloff/Getty Images)

On the red carpet, the actress wore a color-block, beaded Prada dress that descended from top to bottom in three colors. Starting with lime green, the dress then turned to pink and finally to black with a glittery skirt that plunged to the floor.

Letting the outfit speak for itself, Union accessorized with dangling gemstone earrings and several statement rings in gold and silver. She also nailed her evening-ready look with a smokey eye and nude matte lip. To top it off, Union wore her hair in an intricate bun.

Although Union looked glamorous from head to toe, we can’t get over how her look is signaling the return of the color block fashion trend. For those of us who grew up in the ’90s, it’s a fashion statement we remember making.

Everyone Was Wearing It In The ’90s

If you were a child, teen, or young adult in the ’90s, odds are that you had at least one color block item in your wardrobe. From windbreakers and aerobic leotards to oversized jackets and patchwork jeans, you were all that and a bag of chips in your color-block clothing.

Pairing together primary colors and even neon hues, people donned the color block look on-screen, on stage, and even at school. Musicians and actors, such as Will Smith and Salt-N-Pepa, made the trend famous. This isn’t surprising since the ‘90s version was a continuation of the ’80s color-block look that took shape thanks to many hip-hop artists.

The Trend Has Its Roots In Modern Art Movement

While we’re familiar with the ’90s look, color blocking in fashion became famous in the 1960s. In 1965, French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent created a collection of six dresses that were inspired by the abstract art of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. The dresses included bold black lines with blocks of white and primary colors, a take on Mondrian’s artwork.

Although Laurent typically receives credit for bringing color blocking to fashion, two other designers used the technique before Laurent. Another French designer, Michèle Rosier, made similar dresses in the 1960s. Plus, in 1963, American designer John Kloss created dresses with the color block technique.

Regardless of when the first color-block dress was invented, we hope that the updated version of the color block is here to stay.

Finding ‘The One’ Won’t Make You A Great Partner: Keke Palmer’s Refreshing Take On Practicing Compassion https://www.suggest.com/keke-palmer-refreshing-take-practicing-compassion-finding-the-one-make-great-partner/2718972/ Fri, 27 Jan 2023 19:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2718972 Keke Palmer smiles in silver sparkly dress

Keke Palmer is wise about more than just what it takes to be a great actress. The star just shared a powerful commentary on love, compassion, and finding “the one” that we all need to hear.

In a recent tweet, Palmer shared her thoughts on a viral TikTok video. The actress began, “I’ve been wanting to do a little video about this for a minute. Check the next clip.”

Viral TikTok Touts ‘Liberating’ Epiphany About Love

The video then cut to a TikTok of a young man sharing what he called “the epiphany of a lifetime.” In the video, the TikToker admitted that he hurt a girl he had been dating.

When the woman brought the pain he caused her to his attention, he told her he cared and their discussion continued. However, when his partner began to cry, he realized that he felt “nothing at all,” and went on to break up with her.

The TikToker continued his story, describing his lack of emotion at seeing his partner cry as “liberating.” He then realized that he may have been “pretending to care this entire time” about the girl he was dating.

Though the end of the video was cut off, we find out he went on to say that he believes he would have cared about hurting this woman if she had been “the one.”

Palmer’s Insight: Compassion Is ‘A Choice You Make’

Apparently, this is a topic that Palmer is passionate about. In fact, she feels very strongly that compassion isn’t necessarily something you’re born with; often, compassion needs to be learned.

As Palmer said, “People assume that when they find the one, they’re going to all of a sudden have these magical qualities that they never had before. If you’re not compassionate, emotionally available, loving, or you’re not choosing…to be that kind of person, it’s never going to happen.”

The actress was quick to point out that she was not trying to take down the guy in the video. Instead, she just wants people to know, “No one (no matter how awesome) can make you be someone you aren’t trying to be.”

She continued by saying that compassion is “something that you learn. Ultimately…if you don’t work for it, you’re never going to have it. No one is going to be able to make you have it. And if you’re expecting them to, they’re always going to lose, love.”

Several people concurred with Palmer on Twitter. As one reply said, “I agree. You either already possess those qualities or you choose to learn how to possess them but it’s not because of a person…it’s a choice you make.”

It’s a great reminder that people usually don’t simply change after finding “the one.” You have to be intentional in order to be loving and compassionate—love is a choice.

Could ‘Lucky Girl Syndrome’ Work For You? The Latest Technique In The Power Of Positive Thinking https://www.suggest.com/could-lucky-girl-syndrome-work-for-you-latest-technique-power-positive-thinking/2719054/ Fri, 27 Jan 2023 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2719054 Woman of Asian descent in hot pink shirt, smiling with closed eyes and both sets of fingers crossed. She is posing against a light blue backdrop

Many people have started the new year strong with a new take on the power of positive thinking. From TikTok stars to cognitive behavioral therapists, people are gushing over the power of “lucky girl syndrome.” But can this latest technique work for you?

Although the idea of positive thinking became famous in the 1990s, it’s been around for millenia. Even 2,000 years ago, Roman philosopher Seneca said, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” But thanks to social media, “lucky girl syndrome” is a new take on the ancient idea.

The Latest Way To Manifest Positive Outcomes

As the name implies, “lucky girl syndrome” is one way to manifest positive outcomes. The term began to trend a few weeks ago after Laura Galebe posted a viral video about the power of positive thinking.

She said, “The secret is to assume and believe it before the concrete proof shows up.” Wanting to prove her point, she showed up with receipts.”I get the most insane opportunities thrown at me out of nowhere,” she explained in the video that has 3 million views. “I just always expect great things to happen to me, and they do.”

While the TikTok star only shared what “lucky girl syndrome” is, others commented on the video that action is often required to manifest positive outcomes. Plus, as one TikToker remarked, “There is also an amount of privilege that helps out.”

Actions Speak Louder Than… Thoughts?

Another person who is all about manifesting positive outcomes is cognitive behavioral therapist Chamin Ajjan. In a recent interview on TODAY with Hoda and Jenna, the therapist shared that she has some of her patients manifest what they want through both thoughts and action.

“You have to have positive thinking to be able to manifest. Positive thinking is a part of manifestation but it’s not the whole thing,” Ajjan shared. “If you put the action behind it, that is where the real magic happens.”

As the therapist also pointed out, “There’s plenty of research that validates the power of positive thinking.” In fact, at least one study shows that positive thinking can help alleviate stress and anxiety.

Whether you refer to it as positive thinking, “lucky girl syndrome,” or manifestation, Ajjan shared that the key is to identify what you want, set an intention, create an action plan, and then review what’s working every week. If you’re ready to make a few changes this year, thinking positively is certainly worth a try!

Monica Lewinsky Unwillingly Became Famous 25 Years Ago This Week—Here Are Her Thoughts On How Things Have Changed For Women Since https://www.suggest.com/monica-lewinsky-became-famous-twenty-five-years-ago-thoughts-how-things-have-changed-women-since/2718940/ Thu, 26 Jan 2023 23:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2718940 Monica Lewinsky smiles in navy blue dress with red trim

This week marks 25 years since “the Clinton Scandal” hit the airwaves. On January 21, 1998, news broke that President Bill Clinton had a relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Overnight, Lewinsky became a household name and inevitably the butt of late-night jokes.

As we mark the 25th anniversary of the scandal, Lewinsky recently shared some interesting thoughts on how things have both improved and regressed for women since 1998. Now 49 years old, Lewinsky isn’t holding anything back.

In a piece Lewinsky wrote for Vanity Fair, the activist and writer shared 25 things she has learned since her infamous relationship with Clinton. While she opened up about her mistakes, being bullied, and how things have changed for women, she also had much to say about compassion, the body-positive movement, and how laughter is often the best way to survive.

‘You Can Make The Right Decision And Still Have Regret’

In the past 25 years, the biggest takeaway for Lewinsky is based on regret. “You can make the right decision and still have regret,” reflected the writer. “Also, don’t judge your insides by other people’s outsides,” she continued and admitted that she learned these lessons from her therapist.

Lewinsky then shared that while many things are better for women today, some things have reverted in society since 1998. As the writer pointed out, “In 2023, we are (sadly) closer to the reality of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale than we were when the book was published in 1985” (This remark is likely in reference to Roe v. Wade being overturned in 2022.)

Even while abortion rights are bleaker today than 25 years ago, there have been some improvements since 1998. “The blame-the-woman mindset has thankfully receded over time through social conditioning,” Lewinsky remarked.

She then reflected on the scandal that she found herself in. “What began in 1998 as ‘the Lewinsky Scandal’ or ‘the Lewinsky Affair’… underwent a nomenclature upgrade as the years marched on.”

As the writer pointed out, “The culture and the media adapted—at the insistence of many offended observers and arbiters, including [Vanity Fair]—to rebrand the whole narrative as ‘the Clinton Scandal’ or ‘the Clinton Impeachment’ or other taglines that were more in keeping with the original power dynamics.”

After all, when the President of the United States is involved in a scandal, their name should be the leading headline.

Lewinsky also reflected on how bullying has changed since 1998. “As evidenced by some members of the political-operative class in this country,” she wrote, “bullying, both online and in public, has become not only an accepted line of work but an ever-growing profit center.”

While public bullying may not be a thing of the past, Lewinsky is thankful that bullying comedy “has gotten tired.” As the activist pointed out, she was one of the top people Jay Leno made fun of while he was The Tonight Show host. In fact, Lewinsky “was the only one in the top 10 who had not specifically chosen to be a public person.”

Still, Lewinsky chose then and continues to look on the bright side of life. One of the top lessons she has learned over the years includes not taking life too seriously. As she said, “If you can’t laugh at yourself, you are so f*cked.”

‘#MeToo is Now A Baseline, Not An Aberration’

Although Lewinsky did not choose to be thrown into the spotlight 25 years ago, she is grateful that other people willingly stepped into the limelight during the #MeToo movement.

The writer is grateful for all the women who bravely spoke out about being sexual assault survivors. Although sexual assault and violence are still pervasive, more and more people are being held accountable for their actions. As Lewinsky said, “#MeToo is now a baseline, not an aberration.”

Other changes have occurred since 1998 that have helped women and all persons. One such “benchmark of social triumph” as Lewinsky called it is “the freedom to marry whomever one wants was made possible (2015) and protected (2022).”

Another triumph has been the body-positive movement. In fact, Lewinsky is thankful that “the ‘heroin-chic’ emaciation of the late ’90s and early aughts finally went out of fashion. So much so that we now have store mannequins of myriad body shapes and sizes.”

The activist then shared, “I often imagine how such body-positive messaging would have impacted my own self-esteem growing up—and wonder if it might have ameliorated the fat-shaming that other young women of the time experienced.”

Obviously, much has changed for women in the past 25 years. Thankfully, we’re mostly on an upward trend of improving society. However, there is still much work to be done.

As we continue to make great strides, Lewinsky reminds us to offer ourselves “as much compassion as [we] can muster” and know that we, too, “can survive the unimaginable.”

Paula Abdul Got Slammed In The Comments For Heavily Edited Photos, But Is That Fair? https://www.suggest.com/paula-abdul-got-slammed-in-comments-heavily-edited-photos-is-that-fair/2718908/ Thu, 26 Jan 2023 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2718908 Paula Abdul smiling in a black sweater during rehearsal for the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade 2022

Be honest, have you ever enhanced a photo that you’ve shared online? From filters to color editing and even using the Face Beauty feature on your phone, the answer is most likely yes. Thankfully, most of us aren’t scrutinized for our highly edited photos like celebrities are.

In a recent Instagram post, Paula Abdul showed that she is forever your youthful-looking girl. After attending a holiday party, the singer posted several pictures and videos of the celebration. Although the “Opposites Attract” singer looked stunning in a beautiful green dress, it wasn’t her clothing that made a splash on social media. Instead, it was her obviously edited face.

The former Laker Girls was immediately slammed for her photos. As one user said about Abdul, “The first photo you like you are 12!” Another person shared, “What in the overly edited photos are these?! Ladies, this is beneath you. And a terrible example for young women.” One Instagrammer even asked, “Is that Paula Abdul’s daughter?”

After reviewing the six photos and one video in the carousel, it’s no surprise that fans have questions for the choreographer. After all, the singer is hardly recognizable in the photos. Plus, the 60-year-old star looks nowhere near her age.

The question is, are these comments fair? Should Abdul be slammed for posting pictures of herself that are heavily edited? The short answer: no!

Women in Hollywood already have enough pressure to look a certain way. In fact, female celebrities often are forced to get plastic surgery and other procedures in order to maintain a youthful glow as they age. At the very least, many celebrities have makeup artists that can easily take off several years just with the stroke of a contour brush.

Plus, should we be criticizing anyone due to how they present themselves online? From highly edited photos to branding ourselves and carefully curating images on social media, most of us noncelebrities choose how we present ourselves to the world. And yes, that includes editing our photos.

A few replies to Abdul’s post reflect this sentiment. As one person said, “You know how much makeup young women put on! Leave Paula alone. I seriously doubt this would impact someone’s life! These young women look up to the Kardashians!!” Another user simply shared, “Paula you look gorgeous!!! Forever in your 20s!!!”

We agree! Abdul and all women should have a choice in how they present themselves online. The only important thing about the singer’s photos is that she looks like she’s having an absolute delight of a time.

‘Time’s Up’ Organization Is Shutting Down, But Not All Of It Will Close https://www.suggest.com/times-up-organization-shutting-down-but-not-all-will-close/2719217/ Wed, 25 Jan 2023 23:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2719217 photo of a woman holding up a sign that says "For every single #Me Too Time's Up"

Five years ago, the #MeToo movement made America and the world reckon with the pervasiveness of sexual violence. Shortly after #MeToo was popularized by Alyssa Milano on Twitter, celebrities founded the nonprofit organization Time’s Up. Although the organization has worked on several advocacy and policy initiatives since its inception, the nonprofit is shutting down—at least, as it currently stands.

In the fall of 2021, the organization did a major reset and made leadership changes. The switch occurred after some of its leaders were named in a scandal involving former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. More than a year since the leadership change, the organization has decided to focus solely on the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund.

According to board chair Gabrielle Sulzberger, the board of directors made the unanimous decision to cease all other operations. “It was not an easy decision,” Sulzberger admitted, “but the board was unanimous that it’s the right decision and the most impactful way we get to move forward.”

The board chair went on to say, “Very simply, the Legal Defense Fund really reflects who we were not only at our inception but really at our core. We really just decided that at the end of the day, we needed to go back to our roots,” reflected Sulzberger. “[The fund] was the first initiative that we formed and funded, and remains at the heart of everything we stood for.”

When the organization began on January 1, 2018, Time’s Up had received $24 million for their legal fund thanks to the splash it made on the Golden Globes that year. After spending most of that money in court cases since 2018, Time’s Up now has a total of $1.7 million.

Evidently, the National Women’s Law Center in Washington, D.C. administers the legal defense fund to workers who have been sexually assaulted. According to Uma Iyer, the law center’s vice president of marketing and communications, the legal fund has supported more than 4,700 workers with legal services and funded 350 cases of the 500 that applied for assistance.

As the organization shifts its focus, employment and civil rights lawyer Debra Katz praised Time’s Up for entering into a new phase. As she said, “This shows the power of [the #MeToo] movement because victims of sexual violence came forward and said, ‘We’re not going to countenance this [conflict] within our organization.’ It shows the power of individuals demanding clarity in their organizations and leaders.”

Hopefully the change in operations will allow Time’s Up to provide even more life-changing legal services to survivors of sexual violence.

Why Cindy Crawford, Lady Gaga, And Others Swear By The Health Benefits Of Infrared Saunas https://www.suggest.com/why-cindy-crawford-lady-gaga-others-swear-by-health-benefits-infrared-saunas/2717703/ Wed, 25 Jan 2023 19:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2717703 circular photo of Cindy Crawford smiling placed over a stock photo of an infrared sauna

In recent years, infrared saunas have become all the rage. After all, celebrities like Cindy Crawford and Lady Gaga have long praised these saunas for their health benefits. But do infrared saunas really make a difference? Turns out, studies have shown that they can help with both physical and mental health!

Since infrared saunas use infrared lamps to make heat, the magic happens when the light penetrates your skin, and you begin to sweat. Plus, the temperatures in infrared saunas are usually between 110 and 135 degrees Fahrenheit, making them cooler and more comfortable than a traditional sauna that can reach 195 degrees.

Infrared saunas also come with many health benefits. According to the Cleveland Clinic, these saunas can improve heart health, soothe sore muscles, and even reduce pain. They also help reduce chronic pain—just ask Lady Gaga.

Back in 2017, Lady Gaga shared that she has long suffered from fibromyalgia. For the “Born This Way” singer, infrared saunas have been a great way to deal with her chronic pain. “When my body goes into a spasm,” Lady Gaga shared on Instagram, “one thing I find really helps is an infrared sauna.”

Beyond helping with chronic pain and heart conditions, other celebrities such as Cindy Crawford and Jennifer Anniston use infrared saunas post workouts. In an interview with Allure, Crawford remarked, “I love my infrared sauna, which I use after my workout. My husband put a TV in it, so it’s easy to make it through a half an hour.”

Aniston agrees. “I love the infrared sauna,” Aniston told People. “I discovered it a few years ago, and it went from a little portable igloo thing that you put your body in to a little sauna we have now in our gym.”

Infrared saunas can also help fight off illnesses with better sleep and relaxation. In fact, studies have shown that these saunas can decrease depression, anxiety, and stress. For someone like me who has a difficult time getting through the cold and dreary winter season, using an infrared sauna has certainly been a mood booster.

If you’re thinking about using an infrared, just be sure to check with your doctor, especially if you have any underlying health conditions. You should also keep in mind that starting with a short amount of time is important before working your way up to a 30-minute session, which is the maximum amount of time the Cleveland Clinic suggests.

Plus, staying hydrated while in the sauna is key. You may need even more than your typical 32-ounce water bottle! It’s also recommended to rinse off afterward so that the toxins you’ve sweated out aren’t reabsorbed in your skin.

Whether to help with pain, sore muscles, or stress, infrared saunas are a great tool to look in to for your health!

Millennial Blames Gen X Parents For Poor Upbringing, Gets Slammed By Other Gen Xers https://www.suggest.com/millennial-blames-gen-x-parents-poor-upbringing-gets-slammed-by-other-gen-xers/2718865/ Wed, 25 Jan 2023 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2718865 stock photo of a mother and teenage daughter after arguing

One thing each generation does well is blaming another for screwing them over. In fact, a Millennial recently criticized Gen X for the financial uncertainty that Millennials face. Of course, Gen Xers not-so-gently corrected the commenter for being clueless about Generation X.

In a recent social media post, Gen Xers were blamed for the job situation their Millennial children find themselves in today. As the post read, “Gen X failed miserably in parenting, bringing up kids in a template that does not fit today’s world. Gen X was the first generation that actually got a college degree in decent numbers, at a time when …everyone got a good paying job which they settled in for 15-20 years.”

Wait just a minute. All Gen Xers got a good paying job and have been at this lucrative job for at least 15 years? As an elder Millennial myself, even I know this is very false.

Gen Xers immediately jumped onto Reddit to set the record straight. As one person wrote, “My job pays ok. Would always be nice to have more, but…I’ll be working till noon on the day I die.”

Another user was incredulous. “Are you kidding me?” the person asked. “Gen X was the first generation left out in the cold because the generation before farmed out the jobs overseas to boost their profits.”

Of course, others pointed out that they know very few people who have ever been at one job for more than just a few years. “I know almost no one my age that has had the same job for 15–20 years. I sure haven’t,” one Reddit user shared. Another person wrote, “The longest I ever stayed at one decent job was 3 years, so there!”

In another part of the “meaningless word salad,” Gen X was blamed for being unable to “make any notable inroads into being leaders and take over politics from outdated Boomers.” Unsurprisingly, several Gen Xers chimed in to share why their generation hasn’t taken over Boomers in politics

One user shared, “I love that we were supposed to make inroads into taking over politics from the outdated Boomers. Do you think we didn’t try?!?!! There are literally more of them than there are of us and they vote more—that’s kinda how the whole system is set up.”

Other users were just happy to be included in the conversation. After all, Generation X is often referred to as the Forgotten Generation. As one Reddit user shared, “I’m just glad we got a mention.” Another agreed and said, “It’s an honor to be nominated.”

However, some Gen Xers questioned if a Millennial even wrote the post. As one user remarked, “[A] boomer wrote this sh*t to criticize us as parents.” Plenty of others agreed that it must have been written by a Boomer.

As another user said, “Yeah, Boomers are trying to sic Gen X and Millennials on each other, but I don’t think either of us is going to fall for their stale tactics. They’ve literally been doing this for as long as Millennials have existed.”

As someone who grew up in the ’90s, I completely agree with this sentiment. I certainly don’t blame Generation X for the financial troubles that their generation, my generation, or Gen Z finds themselves in. We’re all doing the best we can, and sometimes, it just sucks. But Gen X certainly isn’t to blame.

Channing Tatum Calling His Divorce From Jenna Dewan ‘Super Scary’ Is Actually So Refreshing https://www.suggest.com/channing-tatum-jenna-dewan-calling-divorce-super-scary-actually-so-refreshing/2718668/ Tue, 24 Jan 2023 21:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2718668 Channing Tatum (L) and Jenna Dewan pose on red carpet

Channing Tatum isn’t afraid to get in touch with his feelings. In fact, The Lost City actor is getting real about his divorce from Jenna Dewan, and it’s super refreshing.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Tatum opened up about his relationship with Dewan, why they split, and all the feelings he experienced during and after their divorce. Turns out, the Magic Mike actor learned from his experience, even though it was difficult to do so during the divorce.

The Couple Split After Welcoming Their Daughter

Tatum and Dewan met back in 2006 when they both starred in the dance movie Step Up. Although their relationship reflected the movie plot of a professional dancer and a rough street dancer, their off-screen relationship took a toll on both of them.

“We fought for [our relationship] for a really long time, even though we both sort of knew that we had sort of grown apart,” Tatum admitted. “I think we told ourselves a story when we were young, and we just kept telling ourselves that story, no matter how blatantly life was telling us that we were so different.”

Becoming parents to Everly Elizabeth Maiselle Tatum, now 9, showed the ex-couple that they weren’t meant for each other. “When you’re actually parents,” Tatum remarked, “you really understand differences between the two of you. Because it is screaming at you all day long. How you parent differently, how you look at the world, how you go through the world.”

The Split Helped Tatum Get In Touch With His Feelings

Once Tatum and Dewan decided to stop going through the world together, the actor got in touch with his feelings. “It was super scary and terrifying,” he shared. “Your life just turns on its axis. This whole plan that you had literally just turns into sand and goes through your fingers and you’re just like, ‘Oh, sh*t. What now?’”

It’s a familiar experience for anyone going through a divorce. Most people are scared in the beginning and have a difficult time facing a new way of life. But just as Tatum described, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

“It was probably exactly what I needed. I don’t think I would’ve ever done the work, I think, on myself in the way that I had to do the work on myself to really try to figure out what next. And really, it just started with my daughter. I just dropped everything and just focused on her. And it was truly the best possible thing that I ever could have done.”

While divorce and other major life changes can be scary, it’s refreshing to see celebrities like Tatum getting in touch with their feelings. We can all take a lesson from the actor and do what’s right for us, even if we’re scared.

Dakota Johnson’s Head-To-Toe Denim Red Carpet Look Has Us Reevaluating Everything We Know About The Rules Of Fashion https://www.suggest.com/dakota-johnson-head-to-toe-denim-red-carpet-look-reevaluating-rules-fashion/2717936/ Tue, 24 Jan 2023 17:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2717936 Dakota Johnson poses in all-denim outfit

Dakota Johnson recently stepped out onto the red carpet in an ensemble that goes against all the rules of fashion. In fact, we’re reevaluating our fashion sense after seeing Jonhson’s chic look.

On January 19, Johnson turned heads at the Sundance Film Festival when she attended Sundance Institute’s ”Opening Night: A Taste of Sundance” in Park City, Utah. Foregoing the typical dress and glamorous pants suit, the 33-year-old actress upped the ante with a triple-denim look. And she definitely made it work!

The Iconic Look In Question

While an all-denim look typically includes a denim top paired with jeans, Johnson added a new level of sophistication to the Canadian Tuxedo.

On top, the Fifty Shades star wore a midriff-baring denim corset by Magda Butrym under a double-breasted jean jacket. The matching pieces were paired with high-waisted tapered jeans, complete with pleated detailing in the same wash.

With such a bold look, Johnson chose minimal accessories, allowing the denim to speak for itself. The actress accessorized the ensemble with a Jessica McCormack diamond pendant necklace and black pointed-toe pumps.

To keep all eyes on her chic denim look, Johnson also opted for minimal hair and makeup. She wore her brunette locks loose with her signature bangs and went for a rosy makeup palette with soft pink lips and cheeks.

While the celebrity’s hair and makeup were standard for her, the denim look has us rethinking the Canadian Tuxedo and how we can also bring sophistication to it.

The Trend Has Been Around For Quite A While

But where exactly did the term Canadian Tuxedo come from? According to legend, the term originated in 1951 with Bing Crosby, when he and a friend were denied entry to a Canadian hotel because they were wearing jeans.

Afterward, Levi’s designed a denim tuxedo for Crosby so that he could have a formal denim look. Since then, head-to-toe denim ensembles have gone in and out of style.

While many of us will never forget the matching denim ensembles that Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake wore to the 2021 American Music Awards, Johnson’s look adds a new wave of chic to the look. Other stars, such as Hunter Schafer, have also jumped on the Canadian Tuxedo bandwagon.

As denim continues to trend, we can’t wait to see more Canadian Tuxedo looks this year!

How To Make Friends When You’re Older, According to Jane Fonda https://www.suggest.com/jane-fonda-how-make-friends-when-older/2717574/ Sun, 22 Jan 2023 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2717574 Jane Fonda smiles in black top against dark purple backdrop

The struggle is real when it comes to making friends as adults. As children, we seem to easily make friends at school and in our neighborhoods.

For those of us who are more extroverted like me, befriending people was a no-brainer when we were kids. I can vividly recall making friends on the outdoor McDonald’s playground, a staple that defined my ’80s and ’90s childhood.

However, even for us extroverts, making friends while adulting is difficult. Due to heavy workloads, having children, and getting stuck in our own routines, befriending others is simply not a priority. Thankfully, Jane Fonda has the answer to making and keeping friends for adults of all ages.

Fonda’s Advice: ‘You Have To Pursue People’

In a recent interview with CBS News Sunday Morning, Fonda and a few of her well-known friends, Lily Tomlin and Sally Field, discussed the importance of friendship. Although the three actresses star in the upcoming film 80 for Brady, they’re also friends in real life.

But becoming friends didn’t happen by chance for the three actresses. Fonda pursued Tomlin and Field because she wanted to be friends with them. Turns out, being intentional is the secret to making and maintaining friends.

According to the On Golden Pond actress, “You have to pursue people that you want to be friends with.” Once you do this, “It works. People hear that and then they stick around and you develop new friendships.”

Field and Tomlin admitted that it was only because of Fonda’s constant pursuance that they even became friends. Field even turned to Fonda and reminded her, “Oh, goodness sake. I couldn’t make you stop!”

Tomlin also chimed in and said, “I don’t really like people that much.” However, both Tomlin and Field appreciate that Fonda pursued them because of the friendships that they now have with one another.

During the interview, Fonda also shared that friendships “are very important to our health.” Turns out, the actress is right. Studies have shown that friendships increase our sense of belonging, boost happiness, lessen stress, and improve our self-confidence (per Mayo Clinic). Plus, friendships provide an outlet for coping with trauma, grief, and everything that life throws our way.

After the stress and anxiety that many of us experienced during the height of the pandemic and perhaps even now, it’s important that we seek out friendships. I’ve made it one of my goals this year to “pursue” (to use Fonda’s words) more female friendships. If it’s better for my mental and physical health, I’m all for it!

Missouri House Passes Law On Women’s Clothing That Feels More Like 1923 Than 2023 https://www.suggest.com/missouri-house-passes-law-womens-clothing-feels-more-1923-than-2023/2717507/ Sat, 21 Jan 2023 21:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2717507 photo of the Missouri Captiol from the ground looking up at its dome against a blue sky

A stricter dress code began last week for women in the Missouri House of Representatives. Instead of deregulating dress codes as other states have done recently, my home state of Missouri opted to do just the opposite. In fact, the new clothing law feels more like a rule that would have been implemented a hundred years ago.

On January 11, in a vote of 105-51, the Missouri State House adopted new legislation that requires female lawmakers to wear jackets while in the chamber. The main proponent of the new rule was Republican State Rep. Ann Kelley. Yes, a woman. She introduced the new rule so that women could mirror the dress code for men, which requires jackets to be worn.

As Kelley said, “It is essential to always maintain a formal and professional atmosphere” in the House. When pressed for why she brought the issue to the floor, she remarked, “You would think that all you would have to do is say, ‘Dress professionally,’ and women could handle it. You would think elected officials could handle that.”

If there’s evidence to support Kelley’s claim that female lawmakers can’t handle dressing professionally, it’s impossible to find. There’s lack of proof that women lawmakers are wearing flip flops, crop tops, or tattered jeans to work. In fact, women across the political divide were wearing blazers, sweaters and yes, even jackets in the House even as the Republican proposed the updated dress code.

On the other hand, just last year, a male Republican lawmaker wore bib overalls on the Senate floor. Turns out, maybe it’s men in her own party that Kelley should be more concerned about.

As much as I love being a Midwesterner, sometimes living in Missouri feels like being in a time warp. After Roe v. Wade was overturned last summer, my home state became the first in the country to enact “trigger laws” making abortion illegal. Plus, with underpaid teachers, laxed gun laws, and hazardous chemicals recently found in water supplies, there are plenty of other important issues to discuss. Perhaps then it’s no surprise that Democrats were heated after Kelley proposed the updated dress code.

As Democratic State Rep. Ashley Aune said, “You know what it feels like to have a bunch of men in this room looking at your top trying to decide whether it’s appropriate or not?” As one of only 43 females in the Missouri House compared to 116 men, Aune went on to say that the new law “is ridiculous.”

But women weren’t the only ones to push back against the new law. Democratic State Rep. Peter Merideth even refused to vote on the legislation. “I don’t think I’m qualified to say what’s appropriate or not appropriate for women,” Meredith told his colleagues, “and I think that is a really dangerous road for us all to go down.”

Beyond telling women what is and isn’t appropriate dress attire, other Democrats pointed out that the new regulation can also be an economic barrier. As Democratic State Rep. Jamie J. Johnson asked in a tweet, “Why would we need to add additional class barriers to the idea that anyone could represent the people?”

The new rule says: “Proper attire for women shall be business attire, including jackets worn with dresses, skirts, or slacks, and dress shoes or boots. For the purposes of this rule, ‘jacket’ shall include blazers, cardigans, and knit blazers.”

Although Missouri is far from the only state to have a dress code in the chamber, it is the only one to implement a stricter dress code for women in recent years. Apparently the “Show-Me State” wants female lawmakers to show less of their skin. Perhaps the inevitable next step is for women to have restricted dress or skirt lengths akin to the ankle or mid-calf lengths of the early 1920s.

The Refreshing Reason Why Mariah Carey Is Allegedly Filing For Full Custody Of Her Children Shared With Nick Cannon https://www.suggest.com/mariah-carey-nick-cannon-refreshing-reason-allegedly-filing-full-custody-children-shared/2717484/ Sat, 21 Jan 2023 17:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2717484 side by side photos of Mariah Carey smiling in a black and white dress and Nick Cannon in a black leather jacket and top

Over the past few years, Nick Cannon has welcomed a dozen children into the world. With so many kids to care for and a busy schedule to boot, Cannon certainly has his hands full. Turns out, his hectic schedule may be the reason Mariah Carey is allegedly filing for full custody of the two children she shares with Cannon.

Although Cannon is now the father of 12 children, the first two kids he had were with the award-winning singer. Even though the Wild ’N Out host and Carey divorced in 2014, the two appear to have a healthy co-parenting relationship. Cannon even posted an Instagram reel of a water park takeover he did with their 11-year-old twins, Monroe and Moroccan Cannon.

However, the recent birth of Cannon’s twelfth child is prompting Carey to sing a different tune. After all, the “Fantasy” singer probably never imagined that the father of her children would be called dad by 10 other kids. That may be why she’s supposedly seeking full custody of their twins.

According to sources close to the situation, Cannon is a “doting” father but just doesn’t spend much time with the twins. Although Cannon is certainly a hard-working family man, his intense schedule and obligations leave little time for him to spend with his children.

“The reality of the situation is that Monroe and Moroccan are usually with Mariah anyway,” the source said. “Nick doesn’t see much of them.”

By filing for full custody, Carey hopes to send a message to Cannon that he can’t have a revolving door relationship with their children. The source went on to say, “She wants to put him on notice that he can’t just flit in and out of their lives while he attends to his other children. And she wants legal standing as the twins’ primary caregiver.”

Carey obviously spends a lot of time with the twins. Just scroll through her Instagram feed and you’ll see several pictures of the singer with the twins. From going on amusement park rides and midnight sleigh rides to birthday celebrations, Carey certainly appears to be a loving mother who spends a lot of time with her children.

On the other hand, Cannon has recently opened up about having guilt for the limited time he has to spend with all of his children. In a recent episode of The Checkup with Dr. David Agus, Cannon admitted, “Being a father of multiple kids, it’s always the biggest guilt on me is that I don’t get to spend enough time with all my children.”

As Carey and Cannon work out a new custody agreement, fingers crossed that Monroe and Moroccan don’t get caught in the middle. Hopefully, Carey and Cannon can quickly and amicably reach a new agreement that’s best for their kids.

Yes, It’s Possible To Befriend A Crow, Here’s How https://www.suggest.com/yes-its-possible-to-befriend-crow-heres-how/2717460/ Sat, 21 Jan 2023 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2717460 Crow majestically perched on a fence top looking at the camera

Crows have been part of folklore, mystery, and legend for centuries. Due to their intelligence, cleverness, and trickster personalities, these flying creatures are often misunderstood. Surprisingly, the curiosity and intelligence that crows possess make them great friend material.

Yes, it is possible to befriend a crow. Although becoming friends with animals may sound more like Snow White than real life, crows are able to recognize human faces and trust people. For individuals like myself who enjoy bird-watching and getting to know backyard animals, this is very exciting news!

But before you begin to befriend your neighborhood crows, there are a few simple steps to follow to ensure that everyone stays safe. You should also check to be sure that leaving food out for wild animals is legal in your area.

1. Find Out Their Food Preferences

The first step to attracting these amazing creatures is to find out what types of foods they prefer. While many crows love junk food, healthy food options are best. Most crows enjoy devouring eggs, unsalted peanuts, cat and dog food, corn, chicken, seeds, nuts, fruits, and vegetables.

Finding out what foods your local crows prefer may also take time. You’ll know that you’ve found their favorite foods when the crows quickly descend and eat the tasty treats in your yard.

2. Create A Safe Environment

In order to attract the allusive species, creating a safe environment is key. Since they prefer quiet and open spaces, be sure that there are no noisemakers or debris in your yard. Or scarecrows, if that wasn’t obvious.

3. Keep A Feeding Routine

Reliability is extremely important when it comes to befriending crows so be sure to have a feeding schedule. By establishing a feeding routine, you’ll build a trusting relationship with your feathered friend.

4. Add A Bird Bath

The addition of a bird bath to your yard allows crows to drink water, take a bath, and even wash their food. Since crows are larger birds, a bird bath with a large basin is best.

5. Keep Your Distance

Even though crows may become your friends, you still need to maintain a safe distance from them since they are wild animals. Admiring these flying creatures from afar ensures safety for both you and the crows.

While these are great tips for befriending crows, be sure that you keep crows in the wild. In fact, it’s illegal to have them as pets since crows are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Thankfully, we can be friends with crows even as they remain part of nature.

The Best (And Worst) Design Elements Of Ivana Trump’s Manhattan Townhouse On The Market For $26.5M https://www.suggest.com/best-worst-design-elements-ivana-trump-manhattan-townhouse-on-market-26-5m/2716907/ Fri, 20 Jan 2023 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2716907 circle cutout of a photo of Ivana Trump smiling over a photo of her apartment's leopard-print office

From the limestone facade to the pink marble bathroom and gold fixtures throughout the home, Ivana Trump’s Manhattan townhouse is certainly one of a kind. Although it took a few months to go on the market after Trump passed away in July 2022, the luxurious Manhattan home is currently listed for $26.5 million

The socialite and interior designer purchased the home in 1992, the same year she divorced Donald Trump. As such, taking a tour of the townhouse is like taking a trip through a time machine. Most of the rooms in the six-story home are lavishly designed with style elements from the late ’80s and early ’90s.

Even so, there are fabulous architectural details and design elements in the 8,725 square foot home that we simply love.

The Best: A Versailles-Inspired Dining Room And Elegant Primary Bedroom

(Evan Joseph Photography/TopTenRealEstateDeals.com)

One of our favorite rooms in the home is the golden dining room inspired by the Palace of Versailles. Located on the second floor, the gilded room previously hosted celebrities and royalty. With a stunning crystal chandelier and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a private interior courtyard, it’s no surprise that the rich and famous enjoyed spending time here.

Another beautifully adorned room is the expansive primary bedroom on the third floor. The elegant bedroom, which features neutral colors, a marble fireplace, and three French doors leading to a private terrace, is somewhat understated for Ivana Trump’s taste. However, the bedroom also boasts an ensuite bathroom that is anything but simple.

The Worst: A Pepto-Bismol Pink Bathroom And Leopard-Print Office

The primary bedroom’s ensuite bathroom is certainly a blast from the past. However, the pink onyx marble hasn’t aged well since Trump first purchased the home in 1992. While the soaking tub and double sinks are a staple in most ensuite bathrooms, the pink hue may just lead you to grab a bottle of the pink stuff.

Another room that’s a walk on the wild side is the leopard-print office. Although animal-print can be tasteful and even elegant, the home office may leave you seeing spots for the rest of the day. From the carpet to the furniture and the wallpaper, just about every inch of this space is adorned with the spotted pattern. In fact, there’s even a large painting of two leopards hanging on the wall. You know, in case you forget what that pattern everywhere is.

While Ivana Trump’s townhouse may need a few design updates, the space is unique and certainly luxurious.

King Charles Has A Very Practical Approach To Fashion That We Should All Appreciate https://www.suggest.com/prince-charles-very-practical-approach-fashion-we-should-all-appreciate/2716702/ Thu, 19 Jan 2023 23:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2716702 Prince Charles smiles in mustard yellow blazer over blue top

Although he is the ruling monarch of England, King Charles III also reigns supreme when it comes to fashion sustainability. Known for his “make do and mend” mentality, the king’s very practical and environmentally friendly approach to fashion is one we could all stand to learn from.

The King On Fashion: ‘I Can’t Bear Any Waste’

Reduce, reuse, recycle is more than a phrase for the king. In fact, His Majesty practices what he preaches. Known for being a committed environmentalist, the sustainable king shared with British Vogue why he has a difficult time getting rid of clothes.

“I’d rather have them maintained, even patched if necessary, than to abandon them,” Charles remarked. “The difficulty is, as you get older, you tend to change shape, and it’s not so easy to fit into the clothes. I can’t bear any waste,” the king continued. “I’d much rather find another use.”

One “other use” the king has found is rewearing vintage threads, including a morning suit he’s owned for 40 years. He’s been seen in the Anderson & Sheppard suit several times, including at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding in 2018.

When asked if he had thought about wearing a new piece to the wedding, the king admitted to considering it. “But in the case of that particular morning coat,” His Majesty said, “as long as I can go on getting into it, I only wear it a few times a year, in the summer, so obviously you want to keep those sorts of things going. But if I can’t fit into them, then I just have to have something new made.”

Turns out, the king doesn’t have to worry too much about not fitting into his old clothes. In fact, the monarch was seen wearing another 40-year-old piece this year at St. Mary Magdalene Church’s New Year’s Day service in Norfolk: a longline tweed double-breasted overcoat. Fans of the royal family easily recognized the vintage coat.

Even though the king makes an effort to re-wear pieces when possible, he does have some expensive and well-made clothes. For these pieces and everything else in his wardrobe, the monarch is committed to having them maintained by tailors and cobblers.

As the king said, “I happen to be one of those people who’d get shoes—or any item of clothing—repaired if I can, rather than just throw it away.”

It’s a good reminder in our disposable society that rewearing and repairing clothes are part of a sustainability mindset!

Who Else Is Buried At Graceland? The Family Members Lisa Marie Presley Will Be Laid To Rest With https://www.suggest.com/lisa-marie-presley-graceland-who-else-buried-family-members-laid-rest/2716523/ Thu, 19 Jan 2023 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2716523 Blue and white sign says "Graceland"

Although Graceland is known as the beloved mansion of Elvis Presley, it also serves as the burial ground for the singer’s family. With the recent passing of his daughter Lisa Marie, PEOPLE has confirmed that she will be the sixth family member buried there.

According to a statement from Lisa Marie’s daughter, Riley Keough, “Lisa Marie’s final resting place will be at Graceland, next to her beloved son Ben.”

The meditation site was turned into a burial area after Elvis’ death in 1977. The musician was originally buried alongside his late mother, Gladys, at Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis. But after grave robbers attempted to steal his  900-pound coffin, Elvis and his mother’s bodies were moved to Graceland.

Since then, other family members have been laid to rest in the Meditation Garden. Let’s take a look at who they are.

Elvis Presley

The King of Rock and Roll passed away on August 16, 1977. Since Graceland opened up to the public in 1982 thanks to Elvis’ widow Priscilla Presley, fans have enjoyed being able to tour Elvis’ famous mansion and pay their respects to the musician in the Meditation Garden.

Gladys Presley

Elvis’ mother, Gladys Presley, passed away on August 14, 1958 in Memphis. After she was moved to the Meditation Garden in 1977, a monument was also erected in the garden to her stillborn son, Jessie—Elvis’ twin brother.

Vernon Presley

Elvis’ father, Vernon Presley, died in Memphis on June 26, 1979. Vernon is laid to rest between his son and wife.

Minnie Mae Presley

Minnie Mae Presley, Elvis’ paternal grandmother, died on May 8, 1980 in Memphis. She rests just to the left of Elvis.

Ben Keough

Back in 2020, Ben Keough died by suicide at the age of 27. He was later buried at Graceland, marking the first time a family member had been laid to rest there in 40 years.

Lisa Marie Presley died on January 12, 2023 due to cardiac arrest—and as it turns out, Elvis’ daughter knew for some time that Graceland would be her final resting place.

She even sang about it in “Light’s Out,” a song off her 2003 debut album. “Someone turned the lights out there in Memphis,” Lisa Marie sang. “Ooh, that’s where my family’s buried and gone (gone)/Oh yeah/Last time I was there I noticed a space left/Oh, next to them there in Memphis, yeah/In the damn back lawn.”

There has without a doubt been plenty of tragedy surrounding the King of Rock and Roll and his family, but Graceland serves as a great place for fans to pay their respects to all the fallen members of the musical empire.

‘Jeopardy!’ Champ’s Fun Fact About Themselves Was Completely Terrifying For Their Opponents https://www.suggest.com/jeopardy-champ-yogesh-raut-fun-fact-was-completely-terrifying-for-opponents/2716067/ Wed, 18 Jan 2023 19:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2716067 screenshot of Yogesh Raut competing on Jeopardy!

Jeopardy! fans enjoy being able to connect with contestants who appear on the quiz show. Although each episode begins with a quick introduction of each player, their individual personalities shine through during the break when the host shares a fun fact about each contestant. While most people share what they will do if they win the show, a player recently revealed a fun fact about themselves that terrified their opponents!

On January 12, Kristina Mosley, Kyle Daly, and returning champion Yogesh Raut competed on the quiz show. As Jennings talked to each contestant during the break, both Mosley and Daly shared a fun fact about their pets.

Mosley was up first and remarked that she would have the DNA tested of all three of her cats. When asked by Jennings what she’ll do with this information, the contestant admitted, “I don’t know.”

Jennings then moved on to Daly who talked about his pet rabbits. Turns out, his rabbits are moderately famous as they have posed for National Geographic (well, featured online).

Jennings then spoke with the returning champion, who had won $41,601 the previous day. When asked to share a fun fact about himself, Raut made a startling revelation that surprised everyone, including the other players!

Back in 2014, Yogesh competed in what he referred to as the “Smartypants Competition.” Apparently, the contestant competed in the final round with Jennings and Brad Rutter, who is the second highest-earning game show contestant of all time just behind the Jeopardy! host.

As the player shared, “When the competition was over, I was the winner, which makes me the second entity to beat the two of you in a live buzzer quizzing competition. And the first that’s a carbon-based life form.”

The Only Person To Beat Both Two Legends

Of course, Yogesh was referring to the Jeopardy! competition between Jennings, Rutter, and Watson, a supercomputer. Although Jennings was certain that a computer couldn’t hold a candle to a human playing the game, Watson beat both human contestants. In fact, the super computer ended up with a score of $77,147, more than triple of Jennings who came in second place with $24,000.

Learning that Raut had beat both Jennings and Rutter was certainly intimidating news for both Mosley and Daly. But was it concerning enough for them to tap out of the game? Not quite, although neither of them answered the final clue correctly. Of course, Raut knew that, “What is the Bayeux Tapestry?” is the correct response to, “The artwork once known in France as ‘La Tapisserie De La Reine Mathilde’ is better known as this.”

Despite his status as the only person to beat both Jennings and Rutter, Raut didn’t end up topping Jennings’ winnings. Fortunately, he played four great games and established himself as a gracious and persistent competitor during his time on the show.

There Was One Thing Ronald Reagan Wanted To Do With Queen Elizabeth More Than Anything Else https://www.suggest.com/ronald-reagan-queen-elizabeth-one-thing-wanted-do-more-than-anything-else/2715911/ Wed, 18 Jan 2023 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2715911 Queen Elizabeth II and Ronald Reagan walking in front of several men in suits, both looking at the camera

If you had the opportunity to do one thing with a member of the royal family, what would it be? Perhaps you would go on a shopping trip with Kate Middleton, have tea with King Charles III, or visit Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at their home in California.

Turns out, Ronald Reagan had one thing he wanted to do more than anything else with Queen Elizabeth II back in the ’80s. Of course, the president got his wish!

During Reagan’s 1982 European Tour, the president had a few items he wanted to cross off his bucket list, but his top priority was riding horseback with the queen. Since the former monarch was a huge fan of horseback riding, she granted the president’s wish.

The two enjoyed a 30-minute ride on the grounds of Windsor Castle. For the ride, the queen rode a horse named Burmese, which had been given to her by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. On the other hand, Reagan rode on a black gelding named Centennial.

A ‘Fairy Tale Experience’ For Reagan

Since the president had been a movie star before becoming the world leader, he was always up for a photoshoot. This time was certainly no different. Breaking protocol, Reagan asked the queen to speak with him atop their horses in front of the hopeful media and photographers. Of course, this was famously something the former monarch never did.

Apparently, Reagan had planned all along to ask the queen to do so. According to royal historian Robert Hardman, the president had reasons for this request. “The emphasis [of Reagan’s visit] was on informality, even though the Reagans’ stay would include a state banquet and an address to both Houses of Parliament,” Hardman explained.

The historian went on to share, “Foreign Office files, newly released after a Freedom of Information request, reveal that President Reagan had singled out one event above all others as the most important element of the entire presidential grand tour of Europe: the prospect of riding with the queen in Windsor Home Park.”

Turns out Reagan was very intentional about being seen horseback riding with the queen. As Hardman said, “Over the next few weeks, numerous confidential memos flew to and fro across the Atlantic about the president’s ideal horse, saddle and riding style, along with ideas for dinner guests at the queen’s banquet.”

Apparently the experience more than lived up to Reagan’s expectations. The president even wrote in his diary that the trip to Windsor was magical and a “fairy tale experience.”

‘High School Musical’ Star Ashley Tisdale Reveals What Triggers Her Hair Loss And What She Does To Manage The Symptoms https://www.suggest.com/ashley-tisdale-reveals-alopecia-shares-message-those-struggling-not-alone/2715900/ Tue, 17 Jan 2023 21:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2715900 Ashley Tisdale smiles in black blazer against lavender backdrop

Actress Ashley Tisdale is working to raise awareness about autoimmune disorders. In fact, the 37-year-old recently revealed that she has a disease that affects many people: alopecia. The High School Musical star wants others struggling with alopecia or similar conditions not to be ashamed.

In a recent Instagram reel, Tisdale broke her silence about having the autoimmune disease. Turns out, the actress has been living with the condition since her early 20s.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, “[Alopecia] is a disease that develops when the body attacks its own hair follicles (where hair grows from), which can cause hair loss anywhere on the body.” It can begin at any age, although many people begin to experience symptoms of the disorder in childhood and adolescence.

Tisdale was first diagnosed with the disorder after noticing a bald spot near her forehead. Tisdale shared, “I asked my hair colorist, ‘What is that?’ and she was like, ‘Oh, that’s alopecia.’”

The actress followed up with her dermatologist, who confirmed the diagnosis. As Tisdale explained, “It’s autoimmune and a lot of it is triggered by stress. And I was going through a really stressful time.”

As Tisdale reflected, “There [have been] a couple of times in my life where I’ve had stressful events and noticed that my [alopecia] will come back.”

Tisdale revealed that she is currently experiencing another flare-up. She shared that this latest outbreak led her to open up about her disease. According to Tisdale, “I wanted to share a couple of things that have helped me because it can be stressful just having [alopecia].”

Three Things That Help Tisdale With Her Alopecia

For Tisdale, learning how to limit stress has been key to reducing her alopecia outbreaks. As she remarked, “I find that what has helped me is stress management.” The actress’ personal stress management regimen includes therapy, meditation, and yoga.

Tisdale went on to stress that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment has been a game changer for her. “PRP is amazing,” Tisdale admitted. “It is more of an expensive route, but I do find that it is really helpful.”

Since PRP treatment uses a patient’s platelets to accelerate healing and support cell growth, the star’s hair has grown back quickly in those areas.

Diet also plays a huge role in managing flare-ups for Tisdale. Her go-to diet during outbreaks is the autoimmune paleo diet. “It’s really healing to the gut,” the actress shared, highlighting that it “helps eliminate and reintroduce inflammatory foods for gut healing.”

While Tisdale shared many of the tips and tricks that help her manage her condition, her main goal is to help those struggling to come to terms with their own diagnosis. The actress shared, “If you struggle with [alopecia], you are not alone.”

The Reason Meghan Markle’s Wedding Tiara Supposedly Wasn’t Her Choice Of Headwear https://www.suggest.com/meghan-markle-wedding-tiara-reason-wasnt-choice-headwear/2714506/ Tue, 17 Jan 2023 17:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2714506 closeup of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry riding in a carriage on their wedding day with Meghan waving wearing her wedding dress and silver tiara

For the royal family, headwear can be extremely controversial. Tradition abounds for what type of headpiece one wears to certain events. Plus, it can certainly be a faux pas to wear the incorrect piece to certain events, especially a wedding. Perhaps then it’s no surprise that Meghan Markle’s wedding tiara wasn’t her first choice of headwear for the big day.

When it comes to wearing tiaras, there are specific occasions and places that women in the royal family are allowed to wear them. Women are allowed to wear tiaras to formal events that occur after 6:00 p.m. However, any event prior to that time requires a hat. Of course, the most notable occasion a female royal family member wears a tiara is on her wedding day.

When Meghan Markle married Prince Harry, she wore a beautiful diamond tiara. However, reports suggest that the stunning tiara Markle donned wasn’t the one she initially wanted to wear. Instead, the Duchess of Sussex wanted to wear a lovely emerald tiara.

The problem is that controversy surround the emerald tiara. For the royal family, some family heirlooms are a bit tainted. Turns out, the emerald tiara is one of those pieces.

A Tiara Tainted By Controversy

According to the Daily Mail‘s diary editor Richard Eden, “There was one tiara that, I think, Meghan had expressed an interest in wearing. Then it was pointed out that there were Russian connections, which were all a bit awkward. Then it was decided that she wouldn’t wear that one.”

The royal historian, Robert Lacey, confirmed that Markle wanted to wear the controversial emerald tiara. As Lacey explained, “Unconfirmed by the palace—but not denied—we were told that [Queen Elizabeth II] felt that she had to say ‘no’ to Meghan’s first choice.” Since the “beautiful emerald headdress” supposedly came “from Russia,” Markle was not allowed to wear the piece.

Lacey also mentioned, “The treasure was one of those that had found its way into Windsors’ hands through ‘undefined’ not to say dodgy channels—and for an undisclosed price—in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution.”

Turns out that Queen Consort Camilla is currently in the same predicament. The Queen Consort hopes to wear the famous Koh-i-Noor 105.6 carat diamond tiara to the upcoming coronation. While the headpiece was last worn in 1937 by the Queen Mother, tensions surround the tiara.

The controversial diamond tiara was given to Queen Victoria by the 11-year-old Maharaja Duleep Singh in 1849, as part of the Treaty of Lahore. Due to the colonial history of the treaty, the royal family may be accused of cultural insensitivity if the piece is worn.

Since Markle didn’t wear the emerald tiara due to its Russian connections, King Charles III may keep Camilla from donning the similarly controversial diamond tiara.

One of Judy Blume’s most famous books, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, is finally coming to the big screen! Although Blume has rejected several offers to adapt her book for nearly 50 years, the beloved author finally sold the film rights to the delight of fans around the world. While we wait on the movie to be released later this spring, the first images of the film have just been released.

There are few books that captivate and accurately detail tween life. Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret best epitomizes the painful lows of childhood while celebrating the blissful highs and everything in between. Although readers have waited on pins and needles to see a film adaptation of the book since the novel was released in 1970, fans only have a few more months to wait.

The movie adaptation of the childhood classic is set to be released in theaters on April 28. The film is sure to be a hit with an ensemble cast that features Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates, Benny Safdie, and rising star Abby Ryder Fortson. Plus, with Blume’s seal of approval, the movie is destined to be a fan favorite.

Since casting began in 2021, Blume has shared her excitement for the movie adaptation. As she tweeted, “It’s really happening! Exciting to see the cast come together. Off to a great start with Abby and Rachel.”

Over 50 Years Later, It’s Still A Quintessential Book

Forston plays the title role in the movie, Margaret Simon. In the book, Margaret finds herself estranged from her New York life when she moves with her family to the suburbs of New Jersey. At the same time, Margaret is also experiencing all the changes in life that puberty has to offer for tweens—having your first crush, a changing body, and clashing with your parents.

On top of typical tween encounters, the 11-year-old girl is also on a quest to discover her religious identity. Since her mother Barbara (played by Adams) is Christian and her father Herb (portrayed by Safdie) is Jewish, the tween wants to find God for herself. Of course, Margaret constantly consults with God about her struggles in the most honest way.

Margaret’s grandmother, Sylvia, also plays on important role in Margaret’s faith quest. As a Jewish woman, Sylvia (played by Bates in the movie) hopes that Margaret will choose Judaism for herself. However, as the 11 year old searches for the religion that’s right for her, Sylvia respects the tween’s wishes.

The book was a classic for Generation X and has continued to be a favorite for subsequent generations. With a star-studded cast and two thumbs up from Blume, we’re looking forward to film’s release!

HGTV Star Christina Hall’s Unexpected Take On Turning 40 https://www.suggest.com/hgtv-star-christina-hall-unexpected-take-turning-40/2714919/ Mon, 16 Jan 2023 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2714919 2019 photo of Christina Hall smiling in a black top

When people approach milestone birthdays, there’s usually a sense of dread or excitement for the big day. For HGTV star Christina Hall, aging is something to celebrate. In fact, the real estate investor and home design expert has a great take on her upcoming 40th birthday. And it’s something we all can learn from!

The star of the new series Christina in the Country knows that getting older is a gift. Plus, as a newlywed to realtor Joshua Hall, the home design expert is excited for this new chapter in her life.

In a recent interview with People, the HGTV star opened up about why she’s looking forward to turning 40 in July. As she said, “I’m approaching 40 in a few months and I feel like what I’ve heard is, in your forties, you’re the most confident and comfortable in your own skin.”

Turns out, Christina is “actually excited” to celebrate this milestone. As she shared more about what aging is like for her, Christina admitted, “I don’t feel like I’m 40. Not at all. I feel like I’m 32. I don’t know what happened.”

Regardless of what age she feels, the HGTV star has a big adventure planned for the big day. Christina Hall shared that she has a “real big fun trip” in mind, which may just mean traveling to Italy.

As the home design expert finishes out her 30th decade, she has recently debuted her new limited series on HGTV, Christina in the Country. Now that Christina splits her time between Tennessee and California, it’s no surprise that this new series is a spin-off of her west coast show, Christina on the Coast.

In an Instagram post, Christina Hall shared that the Tennessee-based show is her “new favorite project.” The first episode of the series even features her sister-in-law Stacie with her husband Joel. For Christina, it’s a dream come true, and for viewers, it’s a much less stressful experience than the show that brought her to most people’s attention, Flip or Flop.

“I have fallen in love with Tennessee and it truly has become our home away from home,” the real estate investor shared on Instagram. “We are enjoying all the perks of country living—the friendly people, clean air, nature and clear night sky. Having the opportunity to grow my design business both here and in California is a dream come true.”

As for other plans she has for the new year once she and her new husband are settled, she told People that she wants to start her own home line. “A Christina collection-type thing,” Christina remarked. “That’s something we’re working on right now, getting that in a big box store. Hopefully that comes into fruition next year.”

The home design expert also wants to share her expertise by providing business advice to others. Christina Hall hopes to soon create “an online seminar course on manifesting, creating wealth in your dream life,” though she’s clearly going to busy enjoying her honeymoon periods in her personal and professional lives.

Alyssa Milano Is Thankful For The Challenges Of Raising Her Daughter, And Now She’s Helping Other Kids Love Themselves https://www.suggest.com/alyssa-milano-thankful-challenges-raising-daughter-now-shes-helping-other-kids-love-themselves/2714855/ Sun, 15 Jan 2023 23:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2714855 Alyssa Milano smiling in a blue blazer and white blouse

Alyssa Milano is all about mindfulness practices. Even at the beginning of a recent Instagram Live, Milano shared that she begins each work day by choosing intention cards that help keep her present throughout the day. It’s no surprise then that the actress has teamed up with Goldie Hawn’s charity to promote a book that teaches children how to mindfully love themselves.

Even though mindfulness practices have increased in recent years, mental health for children can still be overlooked. While more people are becoming aware that mental health is important for people of all ages, there are few organizations who focus solely on supporting children’s mental wellness.

Thankfully, Hawn’s charity MindUP is doing just that. The organization is dedicated to providing the tools children need to manage stress and regulate emotions so that they can be resilient and compassionate. With such an important mission, it’s no wonder that a book about self-love for kids, You Are You by Brian Klugman, is supporting the charity.

The author recently joined Milano on Instagram to discuss his children’s book and why mental health is so important to him. Klugman shared that 15 years ago he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a mental health condition that impacts about 1 in 40 Americans. After receiving the diagnosis, the author became a mental health advocate and help children accept themselves.

An Important Message To Embrace Yourself

For Klugman, writing the book was a way for him to “deliver a very elegant, simple message about self-love” to kids. His book promotes self-acceptance, self-worth, and mental health for children. As he shared with Milano, “The core of the message [of the book]…it’s this idea that you are enough.”

In fact, the simplest message in the book is from one of the verses: “You may want to change you, you’ll go to great lengths, but the things you could change may be your great strengths.”

Klugman explained more about this passage. “We all have things about ourselves that we don’t like. But once you embrace those things,” the author continued, “they become very powerful. They’re the things that make you stand out. And when you embrace them, they can unlock your superpowers.”

Milano reflected how she sees this in parenting. The actress shared, “The things that I find challenging about my daughter … are all the things that are going to make her an incredible woman.” From her daughter’s power, strength, determination, and being opinionated, Milano admitted that she realizes these will be her daughter’s strengths as she ages.

Don’t Buy Your Next Candle Until You’ve Watched This Toddler’s Amazing Reviews https://www.suggest.com/do-not-buy-your-next-candle-before-watching-toddler-reviews/2714812/ Sun, 15 Jan 2023 19:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2714812 3-wick candle being lit with match

The reviews are in: a toddler is a definitive expert in critiquing scented candles! Sunday Kramer has a nose for candles and is melting hearts on TikTok with her honest critiques. If you’re in the market for scented candles, be sure to watch this toddler’s amazing reviews before purchasing your next aromatic piece.

Sunday has been “melting hearts all over the world” since making her TikTok debut. The Dallas-based TikTok star first showed up on the platform back in December 2021. At first, her mother Bri Kramer posted videos of Sunday doing typical toddler activities.

All that changed a few months ago when Bri first posted a video of her daughter smelling candles. The candle critique video went viral and currently has 5.8 million views.

@brikramer

She is very serious about this job 😠

Immediately, the young toddler’s scented preferences became a hit. As one TikToker said, “Her opinion is the only thing that matters… I’d be buying the one she approved of.” Another person commented, “Pls if I were a candle maker and she didn’t like my candle I would quit tbh.”

A Toddler That Has A Nose For The Job

Sunday obviously has a nose for the job. She even sniffs the candles like a pro! Think you need to put the entire candle jar in your face to get the best scent? Apparently, there’s a better way.

The young toddler is teaching people the proper sniffing technique. Instead of smelling the entire jar, simply use the cloche, the glass surrounding the candle, when available.

RELATED: You’re Probably Burning Your Candles Wrong: 5 Tips To Prolong Your Favorite Scents

“Wait is that how you’re supposed to smell the candles??” one TikToker asked in response to one of Sunday’s videos. “I’ve just been lifting them and shoving my face down to the candle level.”

@brikramer

Tonight we smell Joya Studio candles and in true Sunday fashion, she does not hold back 🤭 Linked in bio.

The toddler’s professional technique is also apparent in how she mindfully smells the candle and then takes a moment before responding. Plus, Sunday isn’t afraid to give an honest review. Sometimes she provides a simple, “Yes.” Other times she responds with, “No more [of] that.”

So what types of scents does Sunday typically appreciate? Her videos reveal that cinnamon, vanilla, and woodsy smells are some of her favorites. On the other hand, the toddler isn’t a fan of fruity or floral scents.

@brikramer

Sunday did not hold back today and I am just here to report the news. 😅

♬ Chill Vibes – Tollan Kim

The toddler also has very expensive tastes! Some of her favorites include candles that are upwards of $100, including a $135 Jo Malone candle, “Glowing Embers.” But don’t worry, most of the other candles she reviews are much more reasonably priced.

Next time you’re in the market for a candle, be sure to check out Sunday’s reviews!

Lisa Kudrow Reveals How Aging Has Changed Her Body Image For The Better https://www.suggest.com/lisa-kudrow-reveals-how-aging-changed-body-image-better/2715613/ Sun, 15 Jan 2023 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2715613 Lisa Kudrow smiles in black top against black backdrop

Having a positive body image is a struggle that many people face, including celebrities—just ask Lisa Kudrow. The actress famous for playing Phoebe Buffay on Friends had body image issues when she starred in the hit TV show. Now 59 years old, the actress has accepted her body and recently revealed how aging improved her body image.

Before starring in Friends, Kudrow was secure in her body. However, insecurities began when she began working with Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox. In an interview with the podcast Podcrushed, Kudrow shared how she had always seen herself as thin until wardrobe fittings began for the classic show.

Even as a child, Kudrow thought she was as thin as “a stick” just like her dad and her sister. Although pictures showed Kudrow that she was heavier than she imagined, the actress still didn’t believe the photographs. In fact, Kudrow just thought, “Wow! Pictures really distort reality.”

Once she began playing the role of Phoebe, Kudrow recognized that she didn’t have the thin body she thought she did. As she remarked, “It wasn’t until Friends that I realized, ‘Oh, I don’t look like I thought I looked.’ And that’s what was so jarring.”

The Comparison Trap

At the time, the award-winning actress compared herself to her costars which ultimately led to her body insecurities. “It was just seeing myself on the show and seeing myself in clothes and seeing Courtney and Jennifer in clothes,” Kudrow admitted. “And at first I thought, ‘Oh, they know tailoring so they can discuss it with the costume designer about where exactly to take something in.’”

Kudrow soon realized that it wasn’t just the tailoring that made the difference. She discovered that her body was larger than she imagined. However, the actress was also quick to admit, “I’m not trying to say that I was overweight either. I was not. I just had no idea the shape of my actual body.”

Although the Friends star struggled with her body image at the time, she was able to accept herself as she aged. “At some point, maybe not til my late 30s or 40s or later, I just realized, ‘It’s ok,’” Kudrow reflected about her body. “This is just what I look like.”

For the beloved actress, the size of her body isn’t what’s important to her; Kudrow just wants to be healthy. As the celebrity shared, “Do what you need to do to be healthy but this is your body and it’s okay.” It’s a great sentiment for all of us!

Rob Lowe Explains Why Parenting Doesn’t End When Your Kid Graduates College https://www.suggest.com/rob-lowe-explains-why-parenting-doesnt-end-when-kid-graduates-college/2715509/ Sat, 14 Jan 2023 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2715509 Rob Lowe in a grey suit smiling with son John Owen in a black suit

Rob Lowe knows that there are several phases when it comes to parenthood. The actor has already gone through the toddler, tween, teen, and even college phases with his kids. Now that his children are full-fledged adults, Lowe is learning that parenting doesn’t end when your kid graduates from college.

In a recent interview with People, Lowe opened up about having children who are now working adults. The 58-year-old actor has two sons—Matthew, 30, and John Owen, 28—he shares with wife Sheryl Berkoff. For the celebrity, this phase of parenthood looks different than anything he has experienced before.

“They finish college and now you’re at a whole other level of parenting,” Lowe admitted. “Like, ok, it’s the real world. Go to work, get a job, what’s that going to look like?”

‘A Whole Other Level Of Parenting’

For Lowe’s youngest son, that looks like working alongside his father. In fact, John Owen is currently filming a new Netflix series, Unstable, with his celebrity dad. The two even play father and son in the show.

According to Lowe, the father he portrays in the new series is “very successful and touched with genius, but maybe a little untethered.” His son, played by John Owen, has “had to grow up in that shadow.” The celebrity went on to share that the show itself depicts “how hard it is to find your own identity with that kind of presence in your life.”

If the premise seems like it may hit a little close to home for the 28-year-old actor, you’re correct. In fact, the entire series was inspired by the father-son relationship Lowe and John Owen have on social media.

As Lowe remarked, “He loves trolling me on social media. And we decided that people were so interested in it, how can we explore this maybe as a show? So we’ve come up with, I think, a really funny take on a benevolent narcissist father in the spotlight, who means very well.”

For Lowe, working with his son has been an eye-opening experience. “You know what’s really weird, is I forget he’s my son when we’re shooting,” the celebrity admitted. “What’s amazing for me and was a revelation, was I feel like I’m working with a peer. And he’s also the only partner I could have had making this.”

As the superstar continues to enjoy this phase of parenthood, we’re looking forward to seeing the father-son duo when Unstable premieres!

‘Celebrity Jeopardy!’ Ruined A Classic ‘Jeopardy!’ Category With Bizarre Clues https://www.suggest.com/celebrity-jeopardy-ruined-classic-category-bizarre-clues/2713954/ Sat, 14 Jan 2023 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2713954 screenshot of Mayim Bialik hosting the final round during Celebrity Jeopardy

We all know that Celebrity Jeopardy! is much easier than regular play on the quiz show. After all, the celebrity contestants are playing for charity and want to be able to answer at least a few questions. Even Alex Trebek admitted that it can be difficult to entice celebrities to play because “they don’t want to embarrass themselves.”

But in a recent episode of Celebrity Jeopardy!, the stars weren’t the ones who were embarrassed. Instead, the show had egg on its face after ruining a classic Jeopardy! category with bizarre clues.

On January 25, the quiz show had a lukewarm take on one of its well-known categories as Zoe Chao, Michael Cera, and Brianne Howey faced off. When the Triple Jeopardy round started, fans and contestants alike took note of the “Boozy Phrases” category. A pale imitation of the classic “Potent Potables” category, the spinoff delivered difficult clues that even had some fans cringing.

In fact, of the five clues in the boozy category, only one received the correct response. Turns out the only clue that anyone knew was the $1,500 answer! The clue read, “These ‘sparkling’ tastes mean a desire for high-end living; unfortunately, some have them on a tight budget.” You’re correct if, like Brianne Howey, you answered, “What is champagne?”

TRENDING: ‘Jeopardy!’ Super Champ Cris Pannullo’s 20-Game Had Some Fans Calling For Controversial Old Rule

You probably knew that one, but what about the other four clues? Let’s take a look at the answers to see if you have heard of all five phrases. Since we started with the final clue in the category, we’ll go from last to first.

What The Heck Does It Mean To ‘Gin Up’?

The fourth clue in the category read, “Servers brought 1950s businesspeople a trio of drinks over the course of this type of ‘lunch’, which was of course deductible.” Although your mind may have gone to a business lunch, the correct response was, “What is a three martini lunch?”

So far so good, right? Let’s look at the third clue in the category. The $900 clue said, “Chardonnay, adult females & ‘Home On The Range’ (for example) make up this phrase for good times.” Turns out, “What are wine, women, and song?” was the accurate response.

For the $600 clue, the full phrase was needed to be deemed correct. The clue read, “This phrase became a meme as the words spoken just before doing a reckless stunt.” While many people have heard the phrase, “hold my beer,” that wasn’t what the writers were looking for. Instead, the correct answer was, “Hold my beer and watch this.”

Are you groaning yet? If not, you will be after hearing the doozy of a phrase for the $300 clue. The first and supposed easiest clue of the category read, “This booze comes before ‘up’ in a phrase meaning to create interest or enthusiasm.”

If you don’t know the answer, you aren’t the only one. It’s a phrase that many people have never heard. The correct response was, “What is gin up?” Wait…what? That’s a phrase? Yes, turns out “gin up” is indeed a saying. While it’s not a very common phrase, Barack Obama is fond of the phrase and uses it quite often in speeches.

Even so, we hope that Jeopardy! has learned their lesson and will leave “Boozy Phrases” on the shelf next round!

Couple Gives Three Children Going Blind The Most Amazing Gift: To See The World https://www.suggest.com/couple-gives-three-children-going-blind-most-amazing-gift-see-world/2714349/ Thu, 12 Jan 2023 21:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2714349 Overhead view of green mountain at dusk with road running through it

If your child received a life-altering diagnosis, you would probably stop at nothing to be sure they received the treatment needed to fight the disease—but what if it were incurable? What if three of your kids were diagnosed with the disease?

That’s exactly the situation Canadian couple Edith Lemay and Sebastien Pelletier found themselves in a few years ago. Three of their four children have a rare genetic condition: retinitis pigmentosa. The disease causes vision loss over time and eventually leads to blindness.

Their oldest child Mia, now 12, was diagnosed when she was only 7. A few years later, Colin, 7, and Laurent, 5, were also found to have the condition, which slowly causes vision loss.

Just how rare is retinitis pigmentosa? Turns out, both parents have to carry the gene in order to pass it on to their children. As Lemay shared in an interview with Pipeaway, she and Pelletier had never heard of the disease. In fact, “Nobody had it in our families.”

The mom of four continued, “Both mum and dad need to have defective genes, so it is pretty rare. You really need to be unlucky to get it. Even if both of us have a gene, we statistically only have a 1-in-4 chance to transmit it. Well, it ended up being 3 out of 4,” alluding to the fact that their son Leo, 9, does not have the condition.

A Lifetime Full Of Visual Memories

Even though there is no cure for retinitis pigmentosa, Lemay and Pelletier knew they had to do something for their children. After talking with a specialist who recommended creating “visual memories” for their daughter, the couple decided that it was time to act.

“I thought, ‘I’m not going to show her an elephant in a book,” Lemay shared in an interview with CNN, “I’m going to take her to see a real elephant. And I’m going to fill her visual memory with the best, most beautiful images I can.”

So that’s exactly what the couple decided to do! They immediately made plans to travel the world as a family for an entire year. As Pelletier said in the same interview, “With the diagnosis, we have an urgency. There’s great things to do at home, but there’s nothing better than traveling.”

As the couple began to save for the trip of a lifetime, they received a boost thanks to Pelletier’s job. Since he had shares in the company he worked for, he received a nice sum when the company was bought. “That was like a little gift from life,” reflected Lemay. “Like, here’s the money for your trip.”

However, their excitement was short-lived once the pandemic began. The family planned to begin their adventure in the summer of 2020. Obviously, COVID-19 restrictions threw off their plans.

Instead of being dissuaded, the Quebec natives decided to seize the day and explore their homeland of Canada. They jumped in their car, socially distanced from others, and visited places closer to home.

As the family shared on Instagram, “It won’t be as exotic as Mongolia and probably a bit cooler than Tanzania, but we’re lucky enough to be confined in a beautiful country as well to enjoy!”

As the pandemic continued, the family decided to keep their plans flexible. Finally, in March 2022, they were able to leave their home base of Montreal and begin their year-long globetrotting adventure!

Seeing The World Through A Child’s Eyes

The first stop on the trip was Namibia. The family set up a campsite, explored the coast, learned about the local culture from native people, and saw giraffes, elephants, and zebras. As for one of their favorite memories in Namibia, Lemay shared a surprising story with Pipeaway.

“When we were in Namibia, we visited these amazing sand dunes in Sossusvlei,” the mom of four remarked. “Laurent was so fascinated with their little black beetles they call toktokkie.” In fact, when the 5-year-old was asked what he liked most at the end of the day, toktokkie was his answer.

Laurent’s answer made his mother stop and think. She reflected, “[Our children] show us the beauty of the world. Beauty can be anywhere. So we need to be open to how they see the world and learn from it.”

Horseback Riding, A Train Ride, Kilimanjaro, And…Drinking Juice On A Camel?

After an amazing start to their adventure, the family continued on to Zambia and Tanzania. Then, they spent a month in Turkey followed by time in Mongolia. Turns out, their stint in Mongolia has been Mia’s favorite part of the trip so far.

The 12-year-old was set on going horseback riding on the Mongolian-Manchurian steppe, a grassland that covers over 340,000 square miles. Luckily, she was able to cross it off her bucket list!

In an Instagram post showcasing Mia’s adventure, the family shared, “What a moment she had being able to gallop in the steppe! The feeling of freedom! Walking in these vast landscapes, crossing herds of sheep or yaks, crossing rivers… Magic!”

Mia isn’t the only child who is crossing items off their bucket list. Although Lemay shared with Pipeaway that 9-year-old Leo was disappointed not to find any Pokémon in the wilderness of Japan, “His favorite moment so far was on a little hike we did on the foot of Kilimanjaro. The vegetation was so amazing, it was a really nice hike in the misty jungle.”

For 7-year-old Colin, going on a train ride has been the best adventure so far. “Colin’s best moment was in Tazara, the Tanzania-Zambia Railway, as he really wanted to sleep on the train,” remarked Lemay.

“It’s a 24-hour ride that we took through Tanzania, and it’s a really old slow train so it was amazing…And just sleeping on the train while it was rocking us, was really a cool moment of the trip.”

If you’re curious about what a 5-year-old has on their bucket list, just ask Laurent. Before even leaving their home, he knew exactly what he wanted to do: drink juice on a camel!

As the mom of three said, “He was 4 at the time when he made the request, but he was really specific. It was not about seeing a camel, he wanted to drink juice on a camel.”

Living Life To The Fullest

Although the family continues to have a great trip full of “visual memories” that will last a lifetime, Lemay and Pelletier also hope that the trip will help their kids develop coping skills. Since retinitis pigmentosa worsens with time, “[Our children are] going to need to be really resilient throughout their life,” Lemay told CNN.

As their kids learn how to cope, the parents hope that traveling will also be a teaching tool. “Traveling is something you can learn from. It’s nice and fun, but it also can be really hard,” remarked Lemay. “You can be uncomfortable. You can be tired. There’s frustration. So there’s a lot that you can learn from travel itself.”

While they want their children to learn how to cope with their condition, Lemay and Pelletier are also focused on living in the moment and “putting their energy into the positive things.”

As Pelletier said, “We never know when it can start or how fast it can go. So we really want to take this time as a family and to cater to each of our kids to be able to live this experience to the fullest.”

The family appears to be doing just that. After Mia fulfilled her dream in Mongolia, the family visited Indonesia, Malaysia, and then Thailand. Now the family is traveling around Cambodia. They’re taking in the breathtaking waterfalls and deserts while learning about the country’s history.

As the family continues their globetrotting adventure, the parents hope that their children will continue to live in the present and strengthen their sibling bond.

As Pelletier said about their kids, “They’re great together. Over and above, I think it helps solidify that link between them. And hopefully that will continue in the future, so that they can support each other.”

TBT: Kate Hudson And Nick Jonas Had A Coy Fling Thanks To Their Self-Described ‘Incredible Connection’ https://www.suggest.com/kate-hudson-nick-jonas-coy-fling-self-described-incredible-connection/2713908/ Thu, 12 Jan 2023 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2713908 Side by side images of Kate Hudson (L) in black dress and Nick Jonas (R) in green suit set

Back in 2015, Kate Hudson and Nick Jonas had a brief fling. The rumors began after the two were introduced the same year by Hudson’s older brother, Oliver. At the time, he and Jonas were co-stars on the series Scream Queens—but it would take several months for the couple to admit to their whirlwind romance.

The two were first seen together in Florida a few months after they met. According to InStyle, Hudson traveled to Orlando to see Jonas perform at the House of Blues. While in Orlando, they also took the opportunity to visit Disney World.

They were photographed together riding a roller coaster at the most magical place on earth. The following day, Hudson and Jonas were seen having brunch together in Miami.

When the rumors first circulated, the two stars refused to address their relationship. In a 2015 interview on Bravo’s Watch What Happens: Live, Hudson was directly asked about her fling with Jonas. The actress turned to host Andy Cohen and said, “I don’t like addressing any kind of gossip.”

‘We Did Have A Beautiful Connection’

Although Hudson was unwilling to open up about their relationship, Jonas finally admitted to having a coy fling with the actress in a 2016 interview with Complex. After being asked about his sex life with the actress, Jonas opted to answer the question in a roundabout way.

RELATED: TBT: Tupac And Madonna Secretly Dated For Way Longer Than We Thought

“Kate’s incredible. We had an unbelievable connection as two humans who just admire things about each other, and see something in each other that’s beautiful,” the singer admitted. “Out of my best effort to respect her and her privacy, I’m not going to say if we had sex or not.”

However, Jonas didn’t stop there. In fact, he couldn’t stop gushing about Hudson and their connection. He went on to say, “We did have a beautiful connection. Even now I have so much admiration and respect. She’s amazing.”

Apparently, Hudson was pleased that the singer felt that way about her. In a 2016 interview with CBS This Morning, the actress referred to Jonas as “a sweetheart” and “a great guy” as she spoke with host Gayle King.

Within a few months of the Complex interview, the “unbelievable connection” between Hudson and Jonas seemed to disappear. By May 2016, Hudson was seen getting cozy with musician Diplo, while Jonas was spotted with actress Lily Collins.

Now, seven years after their fling began, the stars have each settled down with long-term partners. Hudson is engaged to musician Danny Fujikawa, and the pair shares one child. Jonas has been married to actress Priyanka Chopra since 2018, and they welcomed a daughter via surrogate in 2022.

Although their connection wasn’t forever, Jonas and Hudson seem to have nothing but respect for each other.

Love The Puzzle At The Beginning Of ‘Glass Onion’? Here’s How To Play Some Like It https://www.suggest.com/love-puzzle-at-beginning-glass-onion-heres-how-play-some-like-it/2713892/ Wed, 11 Jan 2023 21:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2713892 side by side screenshots from Glass Onion showing Leslie Odom looking at a large wooden box on a table and a closeup of a colorful puzzle inside the box

One of the biggest stars of the new hit Netflix movie Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery isn’t a member of the ensemble cast. Instead, the character making the biggest waves in the new film is an inanimate object introduced within the first minute of the film—the puzzle box.

At the beginning of the movie, the puzzle box is delivered to five members of the cast. Each person is tasked with first determining how to open the box and then how to solve each of the eight puzzles within the box. Once the puzzles are deciphered, the characters then find the secret within the box.

If you haven’t seen the film, don’t worry! There are no spoiler alerts here. Instead, we’re looking at the games in the box and letting you know where you can find them. Even though the puzzle box in the movie isn’t real, you can still challenge yourself with similar games!

Just ask Chris Ramsay, a magician and puzzle-master who showcases puzzles similar to the one on Glass Onion on his YouTube channel. In fact, he recently highlighted a few types of puzzles that we can’t wait to solve. Let’s take a look at a few of these.

Hanayama Puzzles

One type of puzzle that’s known as a favorite pastime for puzzle lovers are Hanayama puzzles. Designed in Japan, these metal puzzles must be disarmed and then reassembled. Since you have to both disassemble the puzzle and put it back together, it’s like getting two puzzles in one!

Jigsaw Puzzles

While most of us did jigsaw puzzles during childhood, Ramsay points out that there are various options for adults. In fact, some only contain a handful of pieces but can take over an hour.

Puzzle Boxes

Although it may be difficult to find a puzzle as intricate as the one created for Glass Onion, there are plenty of puzzle boxes that come in various levels of difficulty. Ramsay enjoys Karakuri’s boxes because they often appear simply as a wooden figure and not as a puzzle. Plus, if you want to give one of the Karakuri boxes as a present, there’s room to hide something inside. If you’ve seen Glass Onion, this certainly sounds familiar!

Puzzle Boxes: Escape Room Edition

If you’re looking for a puzzle box to do with a partner, there are several options, including ones that are like mini escape rooms. Some of these puzzle boxes take over an hour and have a surprise on the inside.

While the puzzles mentioned by Ramsay are mostly affordable, he also includes expensive NKD puzzle boxes. Released only once a year, these boxes are meant for the die-hard puzzle enthusiast. At $4,000 and over 119 steps, the NKD boxes are sure to challenge even the biggest puzzle lover.

Sally Field Opens Up About The Financial Hurdles She Once Faced As A Working Mom Despite Her Growing Fame https://www.suggest.com/sally-field-financial-hurdles-faced-working-mom-despite-growing-fame/2713794/ Wed, 11 Jan 2023 17:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2713794 Sally Field smiles in black shirt against royal blue backdrop

At the age of 28, Sally Field had already starred in three TV sitcoms. From Gidget and The Flying Nun to the lesser-known The Girl With Something Extra, the actress had made a name for herself in Hollywood. However, Field recently revealed that she struggled to earn enough money to pay for childcare, despite her fame.

Back in 1974, Field was a single mom of two boys. At the time, she was raising her oldest son Peter Craig, 5, and Eli Craig, 2, on her own. Although the actress had been a household name since first starring in Gidget when she was 18 years old, she still found it difficult to make ends meet.

‘I Never Had Enough Money For Childcare’

In a recent interview with Bustle, the award-winning actress opened up about her struggles as a working mom during the 1970s.

“I had two little boys and I wasn’t married,” the actress said. “That was basically my life, trying to take care of these two boys and be the breadwinner.” Even so, the actress “never had enough money [for childcare].”

RELATED: Sally Field ‘Shocks’ Audience By Revealing Her Worst On-Screen Kiss Partner, ‘There Was A Lot Of Drooling’

Although she was a successful sitcom actress, Field simply couldn’t afford to pay the costly childcare fees. Thankfully the actress had a “fabulous mother” who took care of her children so that Field could work.

Without her mom’s help, the actress doesn’t know how she could have supported her children as the primary breadwinner for her family.

Single Moms Continue To Face Financial Hurdles

It’s a difficulty that many women across the country still face today. Without free or inexpensive childcare, many single mothers struggle to make ends meet for their families.

According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, 30% of single parents live in poverty. Plus, single mothers are more likely to be poor than single dads.

Luckily for Field, her mother lived nearby and was able to care for her children as the actress continued to pursue her career. It’s a good thing her mother was able to do so because Field has previously revealed that even as the star of Gidget, she often made less than the extras.

As a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2012, Field shared that she “made $500 an episode” for her role in Gidget. In fact, “There were lots of times when the extras—they worked a lot because we had a lot of big beach scenes—they made more than I did,” the actress admitted.

Although the actress went on to have a successful acting career and has a large net worth today, Field’s comments prove that single mothers have it tough regardless of which career they choose. Nearly 50 years later, isn’t it time that we fix this problem?
