For years, all Prados Beauty founder Cece Meadows needed was a chance. Meadows is a survivor of both cancer and domestic abuse who’s been dealt her fair share of bad hands. She is an indigenous woman with Yoeme and Nʉmʉnʉ ancestry who has experienced homelessness. Yet, she never let her struggles dim her spirit.

At just 27 years old, Meadows was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and the life-changing diagnosis didn’t only affect her health. Like so many cancer patients, the treatment changed how she saw herself.

According to Meadows in an interview she gave to Beauty Independent, it was at this point in her life that she really embraced the transformative powers of makeup.

As she recalled, it was after her friends at the MAC counter gave her a makeover that she had a revelation. “I remember vividly thinking to myself, ‘I look like a completely different person, and I want to spend the rest of my life helping people feel and look beautiful,'” Meadows remembered.

When her cancer went into remission, she never let go of her purpose. According to Meadows, she began volunteering at children’s hospitals and Ronald McDonald Houses to sit with people going through treatment and do their makeup.

For years, Meadows tried to chase her dream of working in the beauty world. However, she was forced to drop out of cosmetology school when she became homeless while suffering from the effects of domestic violence. Still, that wasn’t the end for Meadows. As a mother of two, she was determined to make the most out of her situation.

Eventually, Meadows met her husband, got married, and finally had the financial support she lacked for so long. She became a stay-at-home mom, but her drive to work still persisted. That was when she started pouring her energy—all of the energy she saved for so long to just stay alive—back into makeup.

Prados Beauty, Meadows’ beauty company, wasn’t an overnight success. Wanting to operate completely independently, she worked to fund the project herself. When she finally made the leap, she only had $6,000.

As she recalled, the business didn’t turn a profit for years. After pouring her blood, sweat, and tears into the company—and taking on thousands and thousands of dollars in debt—the dam finally broke loose.

Prados Beauty signed a deal with J.C. Penny and Thirteen Lane. Within a few years, Prados Beauty went from earning $17,000 in yearly sales to $1.5 million in 2022. Still, Meadows’ vision remains clear.

According to the founder, she still is focused on investing right back into her community. “The Prados promise is us giving back to our communities where we live and the communities that are all around us,” Meadows told Beauty Independent.

Cece Meadows is proof that so many of us have the drive to turn our dreams into reality. All we really need is for someone to give us the opportunity to prove ourselves.

Now that there are so many streaming services and social media platforms available, it’s not uncommon to stumble upon online communities you never knew existed—so here’s one you should know about.

Inflation and isolation have been tough on pretty much everyone, and there’s an amazing group of ladies on YouTube who create content that helps with both of those issues, serving to keep you company and help you save money! These creators are affectionately called “Dollar Tree Moms,” and they are awesome for countless reasons. 

Such channels consist of Gen X women, mostly mothers, who share the latest deals, rare finds, organizational hacks, and DIY crafts that retailer Dollar Tree has to offer. You won’t find a more positive, supportive community anywhere else. The joy these ladies radiate is contagious—you can tell they really want others to benefit from their discoveries.

Here is a list of my personal top five Dollar Tree Moms, as well as what they’re known for and why you should totally check them out.

1. Thrifty Tiffany

“Hey y’all, it’s Thrifty Tiffany, and I am back with another Dollar Tree haul, yes y’all, a Dollar Tree haul!”

It’s hard to explain how pure and lovely this woman really is. From her adorable intro to the genuine enthusiasm she exudes when sharing her latest deal, this Atlanta native is probably my favorite Dollar Tree Mom. When watching her videos, it’s easy to feel like you’re just hanging out with an old friend.

Tiffany, a mother of three, mostly shares “haul” videos, where she lets you in on all the latest deals and new finds she has scored.

One of the best things about her channel is that she gives some great inspiration for gift baskets or sets, which she sometimes donates to charity. She even posts the occasional “Dollar Tree empties” video to show the items she will be repurchasing.

2. Glue Guns & Roses

OK, so Megan is the queen of Dollar Tree DIY. I mean seriously, I do not know how she comes up with so many amazing craft ideas, but she pulls it off every time. While she does post lots of seasonal decor ideas, she has a whole host of evergreen compilations containing DIY home decor that actually looks expensive!

Something I really love about Megan is that she makes everything look so simple and she gives alternative options for how to achieve the same result in case you’re missing a certain material at your local Dollar Tree. Her organization hacks are pretty awesome as well, but if there’s one Dollar Tree DIY channel you should watch, it’s hers.

3. Chic On The Cheap

This channel is run by the bubbly Sara Jane, and while she has some awesome DIY ideas, I want to spotlight her home hacks. She tests the items she showcases, and she’s not afraid to let you know which products didn’t impress as well as the must-haves on her list.

Sara is extremely thorough in her videos as well—in the video linked above, she even went so far as to research the effectiveness of different products in killing germs and offer alternative products depending on each viewer’s lifestyle. She is a truly versatile Dollar Tree YouTuber (she’s not technically a ‘mom’), but she really shines with her blunt and backed-up reviews.

4. Do It On A Dime

Kathryn is probably the most well-known Dollar Tree Mom on this list, with a cool 2.1 million subscribers on YouTube. She covers more stores than just Dollar Tree, but of course, we are focusing on DT, so I want to highlight her organizing hacks. 

From kitchen cabinet reorganization to tips for organizing a small room, Kathryn knows what she’s doing, and she’s happy to share her knowledge with the world. I would highly recommend checking out her decluttering tips when it’s time to declutter for the new year.

5. Bargain Bethany

The final entry on this list is Bargain Bethany, whom I also recommend for her organization hacks—though she is constantly posting about new products and gift or decor ideas. Her goofy personality shines through, and viewers are sometimes lucky enough to get a glimpse of her adorable son, Cooper. 

Whether you’re looking for a new way to store your gift wrap or a fun craft to do with your kids, I can’t recommend any of these channels enough—and there are more where these wonderful ladies come from.

If you’re at all a fan of ‘90s and ‘00s films, you know who Brittany Murphy is. The beautiful blonde starlet with impressive acting chops got her start as Tai in 1995’s Clueless, and her momentum continued with films like Girl, Interrupted (1999), 8 Mile (2002), and Uptown Girls (2003). She even dabbled in voice acting, with roles on King of the Hill and in Happy Feet (2006).

By the mid-aughts, it seemed like Murphy’s undeniable talent and irresistible charm would catapult her to the A-list—and it very well may have, had it not been for her tragically premature death. 

Brittany Murphy’s Unexpected Death

On December 20, 2009, paramedics responded to a call from Murphy’s mother, Sharon, stating that the starlet had collapsed in the home she shared with Sharon and her husband, Simon Monjack. Despite medical personnel’s best efforts, Murphy was pronounced dead at 10 a.m. the next morning. She was only 32 years old. 

The world was shocked that such a bright star had gone out so prematurely; it seemed impossible that she could have simply passed away. It would later be revealed in HBO Max’s 2021 documentary, What Happened, Brittany Murphy? that while those close to her were equally devastated to hear of her death, they weren’t quite as surprised.

According to testimony from the film, Murphy’s career had been going downhill in the years leading up to her passing. She hadn’t seemed like herself since 2007, and she was missing out on roles due to her increasingly scattered and faraway demeanor.

She kept forgetting her lines and friends of hers were noticing that she was getting dangerously thin. Those around Murphy were worried about her, but when they tried to voice their concerns, they didn’t feel like anything they said was getting through to her. 

Murphy’s Marriage To Simon Monjack

Most of her loved ones attributed these changes to her marriage to Simon Monjack, a man who seemed like an odd choice for such a successful, beautiful starlet. Monjack had quite the criminal history, with charges including theft and credit card fraud, as well as multiple evictions and lawsuits filed against him over the years—and, as was posthumously revealed, two secret children (per The New York Post).

Despite catching wind of Monjack’s criminal history, Murphy had fallen under his spell and the two were married in 2007. Unfortunately, Monjack was extremely controlling toward his new bride, beginning by disconnecting her phone lines in an attempt to isolate her from her loved ones.

According to What Happened, Brittany Murphy?, Monjack made Murphy fire her whole team so that he could act as her stylist, makeup artist, and manager. He wouldn’t allow Murphy to film intimate scenes with other men, and he would often show up to sets under the influence of alcohol. Murphy was in fact fired from her final project as a result of Monjack’s unprofessional behavior (per LA Weekly).

To those around Murphy, it was clear that something was terribly wrong—and that something was Simon. However, there is only so much that a well-intentioned friend can do for a victim who is forcibly isolated and manipulated.

Monjack’s Sketchy Behavior Following Murphy’s Death

The L.A. County Coroner’s Office ruled that Murphy’s official cause of death was pneumonia with secondary factors of severe iron-deficiency anemia and multiple drug intoxication. Immediately, tongues began wagging about the reliability of this claim and all eyes were set on Monjack to see how he would react.

The first cause for speculation was the fact that Monjack wouldn’t allow an autopsy to be performed on Murphy’s body. While this was already considered suspicious by some due to the star’s young age at the time of her passing, Monjack dug himself a deeper hole during a now-infamous interview with Larry King.

“There was this woman who had just lost her daughter who—who, to us, it was such a shock, this pristine body that was curvy in all the right places and … the skin like silk and I—how could I say, in front of her mother, ‘cut her up?’ Monjack said of his decision.

And speaking of Murphy’s mother, Sharon, there was the matter of her strange relationship with Monjack. The pair admitted in the same Larry King interview that they had come to share a bed in the wake of Murphy’s passing. A questionable photoshoot they did together just added fuel to the rumors of an inappropriate dynamic between the in-laws.

These strange occurrences combined with Monjack’s history of fraud and abuse to create the perfect fodder for a conspiracy theory that has managed to endure for over a decade.

Just how accidental was Murphy’s death? Could Monjack have murdered Murphy for her money?

To this day, new video essays are being released on YouTube that detail the case and speculate about various ways she could have been murdered—and it’s understandable that we would want someone to blame, right?

The Fact Of The Matter

There’s no denying that Brittany Murphy’s death was a complete and total tragedy. It is absolutely true that Simon Monjack’s manipulation and abuse might have had something to do with her passing, but did he kill her in cold blood? It’s unlikely.

Monjack himself went on to pass away under identical circumstances just five months after his wife’s death. His family admitted to HBO filmmaker Cynthia Hill that he didn’t take good care of himself physically.

As for a financial motive? According to People, Monjack wasn’t the beneficiary of Murphy’s estate, Sharon was. It seems more likely that he cozied up to Sharon in the wake of Murphy’s passing in hopes of getting a piece of the pie.

All this is not to deny Monjack’s evident culpability in this devastating saga, but to emphasize that trying to turn Murphy’s demise into a sensationalized murder mystery is doing her legacy a disservice.

Brittany Murphy was a victim, absolutely. She was a victim of the cruel, unrelenting misogyny of Hollywood from the moment she stepped on the scene. She was denied roles due to being told she was “not f*ckable enough” (per Esquire).

When she made attempts to mold her appearance to the strict industry standards, she was still referred to as “the fat chick from Clueless” (per The Howard Stern Show).

Murphy, along with many young Hollywood starlets—perhaps especially in the early ’00s—was dehumanized beyond belief by media outlets. Perez Hilton told HBO he “didn’t even view Brittany Murphy or any of the celebrities [he] covered as real people.”

This relentless scrutiny and criticism left Murphy susceptible to Monjack’s conniving ways, and yes, she became the victim of his abuse and manipulation. Monjack sunk his claws into Murphy and didn’t let go until she was a shell of her former self. He fueled her eating disorder, contributed to her dependency on various pills, and finally, failed to deliver medical attention to his wife in her final days.

However, making Murphy’s story all about this vile man is missing the point. What Happened, Brittany Murphy? director Cynthia Hill put it nicely when speaking to Vanity Fair.

“I feel a little bit conflicted that Simon kind of hijacks Brittany’s story …  I think that it is a story about power and control—in Hollywood and in relationships—and the damage that things can do to an individual and how things can get lost in that.”

Brittany Murphy’s Legacy

It’s been 13 years since the world lost Brittany Murphy, and it’s time we put the speculation and conspiracies to rest. It’s time we stopped giving her abuser any more attention than he deserves. It’s time we focused on the radiant, loving, talented woman who was Brittany Murphy and her impact on those close to her as well as her millions of adoring fans.

Hill had an amazing insight into Murphy’s life and legacy that seems like a great way to end this rant.

“…what I think surprised me is the consistency of the way people talk about Brittany—people who knew her as a child, who worked with her, even at the very end. The love and admiration they had for her…their descriptions of her generosity. That did not change about her.

She still was the same person who moved to L.A. with these bright, bright eyes and all this hope. Bad things happened to her, and the end of her life is very tragic and sad. But from talking to these people, even at the end, I do think she was still that same person.”

With all of this being said, let’s do Brittany Murphy a favor: Let’s stop making her legacy all about how her life ended, and focus on the impact she made on the world while she was physically here—an impact that lives on through her work to this day.

Singer-songwriter Lenny Kravitz is an icon in the music industry, but that’s not the only field that’s recognizing his talents. The Council of Fashion Designers of America just named the star their 2022 Fashion Icon. In honor of his well-deserved win, here’s a look at some of Kravitz’s best outfits over the years.

It’s no wonder 2022 was the year Kravitz won the Fashion Icon award—just take one glance at his Met Gala look! The rocker wore high-waisted leather pants with a see-through black lace top and a matching cape. His silver-studded black leather boots and a stunning white choker completed the look.

2022 Grammy Awards

In case you needed more proof that 2022 is Kravitz’s year, here’s what he wore to the Grammys. He once again sported tight leather pants and boots, but this time he paired them with a silver chainmail tank top and layered necklaces. His circular sunglasses gave the already super cool look a great finishing touch.

2016 VS Fashion Show

Kravitz was dressed to impress at 2016’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. With a suede burgundy suit jacket layered over a faded red top and eccentric statement necklace, we just know heads were turning his way during the event. While this outfit gives a slightly different vibe from the first two on the list, Kravitz stayed true to form by punctuating his look with some signature boots.

2014 NRJ Music Awards

Our stylish rockstar proved his versatility at the 2014 NRJ Music Awards, where he was photographed with singer Shy’m. Some bright red leather pants are the outfit’s immediate focal point—that is, until you catch those leopard-print boots! Up top, Kravitz kept the look neutral but still fashion-forward with some silver and gold chain-work and a tan suede jacket. And we would be remiss not to mention his burgundy-hued aviator sunglasses!

2012 NAACP Awards

While this photo from the 2012 NAACP Awards was taken a whole decade before his 2022 Met Gala look, it’s clear to see that Kravitz has always had a signature sense of style. Here, he sported dark jeans with an even darker tie-dyed shirt. Over top of the shirt is a studded black leather jacket with thumb holes. Kravitz accessorized the look with, you guessed it, a silver chain and some dark sunglasses!

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal condition that affects roughly five million U.S. women of childbearing age. As its name suggests, one of the main indicators for PCOS is the presence of multiple fluid-filled cysts on the ovaries. While its cause is unknown, its side effects are many and can include fertility issues, irregular periods, insulin resistance, severe acne, and difficulty maintaining a healthy weight, to name a few. Several of Hollywood’s leading ladies have disclosed their own struggles with PCOS in hopes to spread awareness for the condition and relate to others who are affected by it.

Jillian Michaels

You might be surprised to learn that someone whose whole career centers around being healthy actually struggles with a chronic condition, but it’s true! Fitness icon Jillian Michaels has spoken openly about her PCOS journey and how she manages her symptoms through healthy habits.

In an interview with Yahoo! Lifestyle in 2019, Michaels recounted being diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 15 following a cyst rupture but struggling for several years before finding a treatment that worked for her.

“I began to try to understand it. … Instead of throwing [drugs] at the problem, I looked at ‘why does the problem exist.’ … And over time, I pretty much had the situation under control.”

Michaels continued: “It’s about eating right, working out, and eating clean. A lot of chemicals that are in our food wreak havoc on your endocrine system. I’m not saying if your doctor puts you on a birth control pill, say no, I’m just saying for me personally, I was able to manage the situation with lifestyle.”

Keke Palmer

The path to a PCOS diagnosis was all about self-advocacy for actress Keke Palmer. In a raw and heartfelt Instagram post, Palmer shared how her condition presented with severe acne and how she had to dig deeper for doctors to listen to her.

“Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome has been attacking me from the inside out my entire life and I had no idea. My acne has been so bad that people in my field offered to pay for me to get it fixed. I tried EVERYTHING. …But it took ME taking a personal look into my family that has a history of diabetes and obesity, to understand what was ACTUALLY happening with me.”

Palmer continued, “… unfortunately doctors are people and if you don’t ‘look the part’ they may not think that’s your problem. … I do not have a medical degree but I did the research and took what I learned to a doctor and that led them to a proper diagnosis. I’m not saying trust web md for everything haha but what I am saying is no one can help us like we can help ourselves.”

Lea Michele

Glee star Lea Michele has shared the path to her PCOS diagnosis as well as how it affected her pregnancy.

In a 2020 interview with Health, Michele said that she struggled with acne in her adolescence but managed her symptoms with hormonal birth control. When she stopped taking the pill in her twenties, her acne came back and she began gaining weight rapidly. Michele was determined to find the root cause of her symptoms, and luckily, she met just the right doctor to help her do so.

“The minute she looked at me, she was like, ‘Oh, you have PCOS.’ It explained everything.” Michele claimed. “But I am very fortunate. There are way more extreme versions of PCOS that women have a lot of difficulty with—mine is not as intense. Which is why I haven’t really talked about it, because there are women who have it so much more intense.”

When it came time for Michele and her husband Zandy Reich to try for a baby, however, the actress admitted that her PCOS made things scary.

“… When you’re trying to conceive, it’s much harder, especially if you have extremely irregular periods. You never really know when you can get pregnant. … On top of that, I had to have multiple procedures to remove polyps and cysts and scar tissue.”

Luckily, Michele and Reich did welcome a healthy son, Ever, in August of 2020.

Victoria Beckham

Former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham may have several children now, but she struggled greatly with infertility as a result of her PCOS. The star opened up to Now magazine about how she dealt with constant pressure from friends and family to conceive.

“I [was] really feeling the … pressure. Every time I go out, someone says to me: ‘Are you pregnant’… and at first, I tried to dodge these questions with a vague response and a smile, but now, I have resorted to overt, brutal honesty.”

“I keep that big smile and say something like, ‘Actually, I’m struggling with infertility because of my PCOS, so my husband and I have been through several fertility treatments. No baby yet, but it’ll happen soon!’

Jools Oliver

Jools Oliver, who is a model and wife to celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, also cited infertility as her biggest struggle related to her PCOS.

In a 2009 interview with People, Jools shared: “Even when I was 17, I thought there might be a problem and that I’d have trouble conceiving because my periods were irregular.” Unfortunately, when Jools and her husband began trying to conceive, her fears came true.

“I was quite quickly diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome, which meant that I wasn’t ovulating each month like normal. … You hear horror stories and you think it’s going to be hard, but I didn’t care. I just wanted a baby.”

Jools made the decision to begin fertility treatments with a drug called Clomid, and the side effects were tough to deal with.

“I had all the side effects—dizziness, panic attacks, blurred vision.” Despite this, the star was “determined to get the thing done. It was awful, but I just thought: ‘Keep going.’ I’m sure any couple that has been through fertility treatment understands what I’m saying.”

Luckily, Jools Oliver’s story has a happy ending. She and her husband now share five children.

Jury president Moore had too many great festival looks to count, but if we had to choose one, it’d be what she wore to the White Noise premiere. The black jumpsuit paired with a sheer skirt and matching cape were simply dazzling, and the actress’ earrings and bold statement jewelry matched the outfit’s shiny details without overshadowing them.

Chloë Sevigny

Less was definitely more with Sevigny’s sexy black gown that she wore to the Bones and All premiere. The peeks of skin are tantalizing yet tasteful, and the dress’ draping sleeves give Sevigny the perfect silhouette. The actress accessorized lightly, save for the bold, serpent-like necklace she chose to finish off the look.

Catherine Deneuve

The 78-year-old French actress Catherine Deneuve was the epitome of grace and beauty at the White Noise premiere in her classic red gown. The slit in the middle of the skirt allowed us a peek at her equally gorgeous heels. While her accessories were understated, her nails were painted to match the gown, and we must say we love the attention to detail.

Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton was positively radiant in her sky blue dress and white heels as she also attended the White Noise premiere. The color of the dress perfectly complements Clinton’s skin tone and iconic blonde hair. By keeping her accessories simple with two silver bangles and stud earrings to match, Clinton let the look speak for itself.

Isabelle Huppert

French actress Isabelle Huppert sported an almost regal look for the Argentina, 1985 premiere. Her asymmetrical black skirt gave us a much-appreciated view of her sophisticated choice of footwear. Huppert’s bold gold jewelry upped the classiness factor of the look, which was obviously already pretty high.

However, we can’t help but notice some irony when we take a closer look.

Joe Jonas’ New Ad Campaign: ‘Less Is More’

Joe Jonas looks down-to-earth in his new ad, “Beauty on Your Terms.” We get a glimpse of him waking up in the morning before he begins talking about how he uses Xeomin, an injectable designed to help smooth fine lines and wrinkles, to keep him looking like himself.

“I believe less is more and I care what I put in my body,” Jonas says. “I want something that keeps me, well, looking like me—because there’s no one way to define beauty. And with a smart toxin like Xeomin®, it’s on my terms.”

Jonas’ Interview With ‘People’

If following up the sentence “I care what I put in my body” with an endorsement for a “smart toxin” doesn’t seem hypocritical enough, it gets worse. In a recent interview with People, Jonas spoke about his decision to partner with the brand and his own experiences and feelings toward aging and body image.

“We’re all getting older and part of that is being comfortable [in our skin]…I don’t think it’s necessarily something that we have to shy away from. We can be open and honest about it and be confident and not really shy away from speaking our truth.”

Admittedly, this sentiment sounds great without the accompanying context, but let’s look at it through the lens of the beauty industry. Of course someone who will financially benefit from the success of this injectable would put an altruistic spin on their sales pitch.

Why It’s Hypocritical

Unfortunately, all this does is perpetuate unrealistic beauty standards. Think about it. You hear Jonas’ interview, and you’re empowered and inspired to choose Xeomin treatment. It’s a cosmetic solution, so those costs come totally out of pocket. While the cost of one unit isn’t particularly high, injectables don’t provide a one-and-done solution—and not everyone can afford to keep up with it.

If something like Xeomin is marketed to the average consumer, beauty standards will continue to become even more out of reach—something only those with lots of disposable income are able to maintain.

Take, for example, the backlash recently handed to Kim Kardashian regarding her comments about her body. The model claimed that her beauty standards are “attainable” for everyone, not just billionaires like herself — and the world scoffed and laughed. An ad campaign like Jonas’ has serious implications in regards to the future of this kind of marketing. What’s next, do-it-yourself liposuction?

Jonas touts using Xeomin to keep him looking “like himself” when really, his looks are changing for a simple reason—he’s aging! Truly being comfortable in your skin is about embracing those fine lines, wrinkles, and stretch marks. It’s about viewing your body as your friend, as the roadmap of your life. It’s about realizing that you always look “like yourself” because you are yourself!

There’s no shame in doing things that will help make you more comfortable in your skin, but just remember that youth does not equal beauty. Plus, celebrity beauty standards are indeed unrealistic—not all of us can afford a team just to keep us looking young!

Kidman liked the photo posted by PERFECT and shared her own reel of photos from the shoot on her personal Instagram. Other photos showed her in a black puffer jacket, then a purple gown with a rather daring print.

Of course, these photos were also received rather well by her audience. Fellow celeb Naomi Watts swooned: “Wowza all of these pics!! And those abs nic!!!”

Royal outlets have been abuzz with news of the Cambridges’ move to Windsor this summer. As with most moves, this change means that Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s children will be switching to a new school. Early this week, the palace announced the decision to send the children to Lambrook School, stating that the Cambridges are “pleased to have found a school for all three of their children which shares a similar ethos and values to [their previous institution].”

“We are delighted that Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will be joining us this coming September and very much look forward to welcoming the family, as well as all of our new pupils, to our school community.”

What Do We Know About Lambrook School?

According to the school’s website, it hosts about 615 students from ages 3–13 on over 52 acres of land, and its mission is to ensure that its students “enter senior school life as confident, outgoing, intelligent and creative young people.”

Speaking of athletics, the campus also boasts tennis courts, a sports hall, and a nine-hole golf course, as well as offerings for cricket, trampolining, and more.

Lambrook School even has options for its less athletically-inclined population including drama, a chorus, and a full-fledged dance studio.

The school has space for students who would like to board there, but it’s unlikely this will be the case for the young princes and princess, as their new home will only be a short drive from the school grounds.

The loss of a child is one of the most heartbreaking and unimaginable tragedies one can go through. Unfortunately, NBC news correspondent Richard Engel is among the parents who know that pain. He recently announced the death of his young son, and Today’s Savannah Guthrie took to Instagram to share her sympathies for her friend.

An Unimaginable Loss

On August 18, 2022, Richard Engel posted on Twitter to announce the tragic passing of his 6-year-old son, Henry. Engel and his wife, Mary Forrest, have been very open about their son’s ongoing health issues and work endlessly to spread awareness.

Henry battled Rett syndrome, a genetic brain condition with no known cure. According to the International Rett Syndrome Foundation, the disease can impair a child’s normal growth timeline and lead to loss of speech and motor control, seizures, and breathing issues. Surprisingly, the already rare condition occurs almost exclusively in girls (1 in 10,000 girls are diagnosed) but is even rarer in boys.

Savannah Guthrie’s Tribute: ‘We Will Keep Fighting’

Engel shared regular updates about Henry’s condition on the Today show, which meant he developed a friendship with host Savannah Guthrie. Naturally, Guthrie was grief-stricken upon news of Henry’s passing and posted the following series of images on Instagram to express her sympathy.

To Engel and Forrest, Guthrie wrote “…you are the personification of what it means to be a parent—to love, adore, and delight in your child, and bring every ounce of your beings to their flourishing. You’re my heroes.”

Guthrie continued with a message for Henry himself: “My dear Henry, you will be missed. I will always remember the twinkle in your eye. We will keep fighting for you.”

It’s clear to see what an impact Henry’s life had not just on the thousands who followed his story, but on those he had the chance to meet, however briefly.

How You Can Help

Research is being done every day to combat and hopefully find a cure for Rett syndrome, but the fight is far from over. Texas Children’s Hospital created a memorial page for Henry where you can learn more about his story and donate to Rett syndrome research.

Professional skateboarder, stuntman, and former Jackass personality Bam Margera has been the subject of much concern this year due to his continued issues with his sobriety. A recent development has worried fans of Margera’s taking their cause to social media, but the star’s family is asking them to tone it down.

Margera’s Struggles With Sobriety

The first indication of Margera’s declining mental health followed the tragic and premature death of his close friend and Jackass costar, Ryan Dunn, who passed away in 2011 in a drunk-driving accident. Margera shared that this loss led him to turn to alcohol and he even developed an eating disorder.

Unfortunately, sobriety has continued to be an issue for Margera 10 years after his friend’s passing, and following a drunken outburst on Instagram in 2021, the Jackass team dropped him from the franchise. While this decision was made in the interest of Margera’s health, it angered him greatly, and his reaction led Jackass co-creator Jeff Tremaine to file a restraining order against him.

Rumors Of Conservatorship

In May of 2022, TMZ reported that Margera had successfully completed a 12-month stint in a recovery facility. However, shortly after this major milestone, Margera fled the facility twice, neglecting to take his medications each time.

The star’s concerned family staged an intervention for him following the second escape, and rumors began to swirl that Margera was being forced into a conservatorship reminiscent of Britney Spears or Amanda Bynes.

The #FreeBam movement has taken off on Twitter, with many concerned fans of Margera’s calling for him to be let out of the rumored conservatorship.

“Poor @BAM__MARGERA is saying they’re keeping his son from him. I cannot imagine the pain. #FreeBam#JusticeForBam” one user posted.

Many others in the community have continued to perpetuate the rumor and demand justice for Margera.

The Family’s Statement

The #FreeBam movement has spread so far that Margera’s own family made a statement about it. They took to Instagram to share the following message:

“The ‘Free Bam’ movement has caused confusion and threat to Bam and our families. Although we love sharing our lives with you, some things need to be handled privately, and treatment is one of them. Recovery is difficult and even more so under public scrutiny.” the post read.

The post then directly addresses rumors of conservatorship:

“Despite rumors, Bam has never been in a conservatorship but rather a temporary healthcare guardianship for reasons not shared with the public. If Bam chooses to speak to this, he will when he is ready. The ‘Free Bam’ theorists have encouraged his exit from treatment, despite their lacking knowledge of the details, his health, and well-being.”

Clearly, Margera’s family knows his situation better than any member of the public could. The fact that they feel the need to publicly address the rumors and label them as problematic means that such rumors pose a legitimate threat to Margera’s recovery.

While those using the hashtag #FreeBam surely have Margera’s best interests at heart, their actions could be having the opposite effect. It’s important to respect the family’s wishes and trust that they know what’s best for their loved one.

A gargantuan media merger has taken place between Warner Bros. and Discovery, which has sparked some controversial strategy decisions. David Zaslav, CEO of the newly coined Warner Bros. Discovery corporation, addressed the company’s decision to scrap the already-produced movie Batgirl—leading audiences to point out a significant discrepancy.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s ‘Strategic Shift’

Warner Bros. and Discovery, two huge media companies, completed a merger in the spring of 2021. This change hasn’t affected viewers in any notable way until now. Last week, it was announced that HBO Max will be merging with Discovery+ to create a new streamer, the name of which has yet to be announced.

With this already puzzling decision came another blow: two of the company’s direct-to-stream films, Scoob! Holiday Haunt and Batgirl will no longer be released at all.

During the company’s Q2 earnings call, CEO David Zaslav remarked: “We’re not going to launch a movie to make a quarter and we’re not going to put a movie out unless we believe in it.”

“These are brands that are known everywhere in the world, and as part of that, we’re going to focus on quality. DC is something that we think we could make better and we’re focused on it now.”

While Zaslav begins his explanation with a focus on wanting to release high-quality content rather than simply making a buck, his tune seems to change a bit as he continues.

“This idea of expensive films going direct to streaming—we can’t find an economic case for it, we can’t find an economic value to it, so we’re making a strategic shift.”

Zaslav rounds out his statement by ensuring that the company is “committed to being disciplined about a framework that guides our comfortable investment for maximum return.”

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

From Zaslav’s somewhat contradictory statement, it’s difficult to glean if the choice to scrap Batgirl has more to do with production value or financial return. But actions speak louder than words, so the company’s interests become a bit clearer with the knowledge of its subsequent announcement.

During the same call, Zaslov confirmed that The Flash would be moving forward with post-production and release, despite star Ezra Miller’s many disturbing scandals over the past two years.

Miller has been the subject of much controversy since a video of them choking a woman in Iceland surfaced. Their violent behavior has continued and led to multiple charges of assault and disorderly conduct as well as protective orders and allegations of kidnapping.

Regardless of Miller’s highly unsettling and illegal behavior, they will keep their leading role in The Flash, which is expected to release in 2023.

“We have seen The Flash, Black Adam, and Shazam 2,” Zaslav said. “We are very excited about them. We’ve seen them. We think they are terrific, and we think we can make them even better.”

Why It’s Problematic

These decisions, both on their own and in spite of each other, have caused understandable backlash and even outrage from the public. Many see it as hypocritical that Zaslav claims to be canning Batgirl in the interest of DC’s reputation when keeping Miller as one of the faces of the brand will only serve to tarnish it.

In addition to this hypocrisy, Zaslov insisted that the decision to scrap Batgirl had nothing to do with money, but then went on to cite the lack of an “economic case” for its release as well as a commitment to “maximum return.”

Of course, Warner Bros. Discovery is a corporation, and so it follows that money would be of primary concern for them. However, scrapping a $90 million film in the interest of saving money is a bit counterintuitive.

This is even more so the case when you consider its decision to keep a figure surrounded by so many allegations of extreme violence at the forefront of its brand moving forward.

News outlets were flooded this weekend with information regarding a car crash that involved Emmy Award-winning actress Anne Heche. The actress, whose condition is now being reported as stable, crashed her car into a house which subsequently erupted into flames. Fellow celebrity Alec Baldwin has expressed his support for Heche—but it’s not being received well.

Devastating Crash Leaves L.A. Home Destroyed

Over the weekend, news began to spread about a serious car accident that occurred on Friday in Los Angeles. Heche lost control of her vehicle, which flew 30 feet into a house that subsequently caught fire. The fire was so strong that it reportedly took 60 firefighters over an hour to quell the flames.

Heche has reportedly been left with severe burns and is still in the hospital, while the owner of the home she destroyed, who narrowly escaped with her life, lost an “entire lifetime of possessions, mementos, all equipment for her business including her laptop and iPad, all of her clothing and basic necessities, and all household items.”

The New York Post shared that investigators confirmed they would be pursuing the possibility of alcohol or drug involvement in the crash. On the same day as the accident, the latest episode of Heche’s podcast Better Together (which has since been deleted) discussed her use of vodka to help her get through a “bad day.” However, Heche’s representatives told TMZ that the podcast was recorded a few days prior to being published.

Baldwin’s Show Of Support For Heche: ‘All My Love’

As is the case with any tragedy involving a celebrity, fellow members of Hollywood spoke out about the crash. Alec Baldwin took to Instagram to share his sentiments and give his best wishes to Heche as she began her long recovery.

“Hey, I just wanted to send out my best wishes and all my love to Anne Heche. Anne is an old pal of mine, I did a movie with her. A very ’90s thriller called The Juror...”

Baldwin went on to name-drop almost everyone involved in the film, before saying “There were not many women who I worked with who were brave in the way that Anne was brave. Anne was really—you know, she would do anything.”

“Everyone please join me in giving support and love to the wonderful Anne Heche.”

Baldwin’s Followers React: ‘You’re A Freakin’ Clown!!!”

The reactions to the post on Instagram, while somewhat mixed, tended to lean in the direction of anger towards Baldwin.

One comment got straight to the point: “You’re a freakin clown!!!”

Others gave more insight into the reasons for their rage.

“She was drunk Alec! She needs to go to jail after recovery. People that do wrong should pay. How about the family’s house she destroyed? Why aren’t you saying anything about them?” One commenter ranted.

Another kept things simple: “What about the people that she almost killed??… Is she more important?”

Double-Edged Sword

The crash was catastrophic and unacceptable, and the responsible party should be held accountable. However, it makes sense that Baldwin would be sending support to his friend and colleague and praying that she makes it through the ordeal alive.

Though she is no longer the young starlet who first graced the silver screen in Halloween, we argue she’s developed into something even better. Not only is Curtis a seasoned actress, children’s book author, producer, and activist, but she’s an advocate for embracing the aging process—a sentiment that’s even more relevant now than it was when she first shared her view.

‘Death, Taxes And Aging’: Curtis’ 2012 Statement

In May of 2012, HuffPost published an article by the name of “Anti-Anti.” The author? None other than Jamie Lee Curtis. Yes, that one: the daughter of two Hollywood legends who has grown up to become one of her own. The topic? Aging in America—more specifically, our culture’s obsession with anti-aging practices.

“Anti. There are many things I am against. Anti-discrimination. Anti-drug. Anti-oppression. Anti-poverty and sickness…Why then are we obsessed in this culture with Anti-Aging?” Curtis began. “I am appalled that the term we use to talk about aging is ‘anti.’ Aging is as natural as a baby’s softness and scent. Aging is human evolution in its pure form. Death, taxes, and aging.”

Curtis continued: “We are in the chain of our ancestors, like it or not. These are truths to be celebrated and in other countries they are. The term older and wiser is actually in play everywhere but here.”

Americans And Aging

While Curtis began her article by highlighting the inevitability and universal nature of aging, she transitioned into an argument that rings even truer in 2022, 10 years after it was written. 

“In America, we celebrate youth and all youth’s indiscretions and follies. We cling to the shiny new thing, we stare at altered photographs and wonder why we don’t measure up. If you stripped away all the airbrushing and injectables and stylists and talented make-up and hair teams and the thousands and thousands of dollars spent on any one image, and you look at them in the mirror—the deep dark truthful mirror—you might just see yourself.”

This statement is pretty much timeless in regard to America’s obsession with anti-aging. Ever since advertisements could be printed, they were used to sell hair dyes, face creams, and weight-loss supplements. But as we read Curtis’ article from our perspective a decade in the future, we have a strange kind of hindsight that makes her words more powerful.

Present-Day Implications

At the time the piece was written in 2012, social media had been around for a while, but apps exclusively for photo-sharing like Instagram or VSCO were in their genesis. Facebook was used more for sharing funny memes and playing games like Farmville than for documenting our every activity. Our phones couldn’t scan our faces and apply filters with the tap of a finger as they can today.

In 2022, we can re-read Curtis’ words with the understanding that there are even more filters, fads, and products separating us from our authentic selves than there have ever been, which makes it all the more important for us to embrace our authentic selves. It’s absolutely impossible to live up to the standards we see online and on television because those standards are often created artificially: through an app, with an airbrush, with some extra padding here or there.

Everyone wants to put their best foot forward on social media. It’s basically a highlight reel, which has made it feel like a competition. Who is accomplishing the most? Who is aging the best? But the truth is, while aging is a beautiful process, it’s not always beautiful in the ways we expect. Our looks may fade away from 21st-century standards, but that “youthful glow” is replaced by an aura of self-assurance, wisdom, and peace with the world around us. What’s more beautiful than that?

Gene Simmons And Cher Were Very Much In Love

Simmons and Cher began their relationship in 1978, and they quickly became very serious about each other. Simmons even became involved in the lives of Cher’s children and considered the prospect of marriage. In a 1979 interview with People, Simmons gushed “I’m crazy about Cher, nuts about her. She’s my first love…Cher’s an untainted soul who has never done anything bad to anybody.”

In that same interview, Cher dished that she had spent a quarter of a million dollars on a Colorado cabin for the pair to stay in for the holidays. However, before Christmas of 1979 could come, everything changed.

Enter Diana Ross

With the holidays approaching, Simmons asked Cher what she would like for a Christmas gift, and Cher told the rockstar to consult her best friend, Diana Ross. In his 2002 memoir, Simmons recounted following Cher’s wishes, but recalled immediately being enamored by Ross:

“I remember coming in and immediately thinking two things about her: first, that she was very sensual, and second, that she was in firm control of her career,” Over time, the two became close friends and even went on sporting outings together, but Simmons claimed they didn’t have any questionable intentions.

“We didn’t think much of it, and I’m not sure that either of us had any hidden agenda, but pretty quickly it became apparent something was happening.”

Simmons ultimately made the decision to end his relationship with Cher in order to pursue one with Ross.

What Happened To Cher And Diana Ross’s Friendship?

While it would be logical to assume that Cher was nonplussed by the abrupt ending of her relationship with Simmons, it appears that she didn’t hold any ill-will toward either Simmons or Ross.

According to a 1980 issue of People, Cher and Ross attended one of KISS’s studio sessions together just weeks after the breakup. Besides, history tends to repeat itself—after two years of dating, Simmons left Ross for Playboy model Shannon Tweed, who he remains with as of 2022.

As it turns out Cher and Ross’s camaraderie is still present, with Cher even taking to Twitter to express her affections for Ross as recently as 2017.

While a messy love triangle can often spell the end of even the strongest friendship, we’re glad to see that the two music legends remain cordial decades after the fact.

Kate And Toby’s Bittersweet Ending

NBC’s wildly successful drama series This Is Us recently ended after six seasons on the air, leaving many to hope it receives an Emmy nod. True to its nature of flashing forward and backward in time, the show clued viewers into the fact that Kate and Toby (Chris Sullivan, whose voice you may recognize) wouldn’t stay married, but they didn’t share the circumstances of the pair’s split. 

Metz sat down with People to discuss how she felt when she finally learned the details of Kate and Toby’s realization that their marriage was over, and she had some highly insightful things to say.

“What’s so bittersweet is that Kate and Toby were exactly the right people to be together. There’s a reason why they did meet and they did fall in love and have this beautiful family. So you can’t take that away just because they’re not together in the future. I think we forget to take all the good away from a situation when we can only see the negative about it. But only in hindsight do we then know, ‘Oh, this was actually for the best.’ You just can’t always see that when you’re in the moment, it’s so beautiful in the way the story is told.”

Chrissy Metz’s Real-Life Toby

As it turns out, Metz’s words of wisdom are backed up by her own experience: she was married for seven years to freelance copywriter Martyn Eaden, whom she met online. The pair hit it off immediately, with Eaden traveling from the UK to the US to meet Metz and proposing to her within a year. However, Metz told Daily Mail, her family didn’t quite get along with her new beau.

What’s more is that Metz and Eaden both struggled in their relationships with food and took conflicting approaches to healing. This made Metz feel that she was unable to stay consistent with her health goals while in the marriage, so she joined a 12-step program. Unfortunately, this led to the realization that her marriage wasn’t working. The couple’s divorce was finalized in 2015, but they still stay in close contact and remain friends, much like Kate and Toby.

The parallels between Kate’s marriage and her own are not lost on Metz. Of her divorce, she shared, “It was really hard because much like Kate and Toby…you love each other. We find faults. But you know, you’re not growing together; you’re growing apart… But I love him, and I’m always checking in on him. I am still working on being a better ex-wife than I was a wife.”

We can always count on the ladies of the Today show for some playful banter and a good belly laugh, and this fourth of July was no different. The show’s team pulled up a festive throwback photo of Jenna Bush Hager with her family, and her co-host Hoda Kotb seemed to have orchestrated the hilarious moment.

‘You Look Like The 4th Of July!’

This past Monday, a clip was shared to Hager and Kotb’s joint Instagram profile showing a very young Hager posing with her famous family. She is standing right in front of her famous father, former president George W. Bush.

“You look like the 4th of July! Our team pulled up a very cute throwback of the Bush family, leaving @jennabhager in shock.” the caption read.

In the clip, Hager’s back-and-forth with Kotb can be clearly heard. Kotb gawks “LOOK at your outfit!” to which Hager replies “Please stop… It’s just so mean.”

“Why? It’s not mean. You look cute.” Kotb continues. “You have bangs.”

“Who is he?!” Hager interjects as the camera zooms in on her father’s face. This is followed by bellowing laughter from both hosts before Hager’s focus moves to her childhood haircut. “I mean that’s—no wonder, I just was desperate to be Kelly Taylor on 90210.”

Jenna Bush Hager Loves To Talk About Her Family

This is far from the first time Hager has poked fun and mentioned her famous father. Recently, she told the story of his reaction to her eldest daughter’s name, and Kotb couldn’t hold back her laughter.

On a slightly more touching note, Hager has also shared the way she made the White House a part of her wedding. It’s clear to see that Hager is proud of her past—even if those bangs are a tad bit cringeworthy.

On the 10th of June, 1991, an 11-year-old girl named Jaycee Lee Dugard was abducted from her California bus stop. Her stepfather watched in horror as she was pulled into an unmarked van. While he made every effort to locate his daughter’s kidnappers, Dugard would be subject to a harrowing eighteen years of sexual abuse in the captivity of Phillip Garrido and his wife, Nancy.

During this time, Dugard gave birth to two daughters of her own. In 2009, Garrido and his wife were finally apprehended, leading to the release of all three young women. Dugard has been outspoken about her experience, but what became of her daughters?

Jaycee Lee Dugard Birthed Two Daughters By Her Captor

While in captivity, Dugard was stowed away in a series of huts and tents in the Garridos’ backyard, where she was repeatedly subject to brutal sexual assaults by Garrido. After over two years in captivity, one of these assaults resulted in a pregnancy. Unable to go to a hospital, Dugard was forced to give birth inside a tent with no medical assistance—at only 14 years old. 

Dugard named her daughter Angel, and described the moment of her birth in an interview with ABC: “Then I saw her. She was … beautiful. I felt like I wasn’t alone anymore. I had somebody that was mine, and I wasn’t alone. I knew I could never let anything happen to her. I didn’t know how I was going to do that, but I did.”

Three years later, Dugard gave birth to a second daughter, Starlit. She continued, “I had a second person to love, and to love me—and maybe another little piece of my mom to hold onto.”

Her Daughters Helped Police Finally Free Dugard

Angel and Starlit were raised to believe that Dugard was their sister and that the Garridos were their biological parents, but this didn’t stop Dugard from putting her heart and soul into her daughters’ upbringings.

Dugard did everything she could to teach the girls what she knew about the world despite only having received a fifth-grade education. The young mother set up the backyard compound as a homeschool and conducted daily lessons with the girls covering reading, history, math, and more.

In 2009, Phillip Garrido took Angel and Starlit on a visit to the University of California, Berkeley. By this time, the girls were young teens, and their behavior on the outing set off alarm bells for employees of the university.

Luckily, the police were called, which eventually led to justice and freedom for Dugard and her daughters. While this was a joyous moment for Dugard, her daughters struggled due to the complex emotional connection they felt with Garrido. In fact, it was reported that they cried tears of fear and sadness during their release.

Where Are Jaycee Lee Dugard’s Daughters Today?

Angel’s age is believed to be 28 as her exact date of birth is unknown or unshared (it is noted to be in August 1994). Starlit’s birthday is noted as November 13, 1997, making her 25 years old today.

They keep most of their lives private, and understandably so, but Dugard describes them both as “resilient” and “loving,” sharing that they were both attending college as of 2016. Dugard also shared that neither of them wish to have any contact with Garrido at this time, but if they chose to in the future, she wouldn’t stop them. 

“I would hope they wouldn’t want to, but as long as he’s behind bars, and they’re safe, then I wouldn’t hinder their ability to make that choice.”

And while all three women are surprisingly well-adjusted, they still look back on their old lives from time to time—though they manage to see the best in things and remain grateful for the outcome of their story. In another interview with ABC, Dugard shared that the three even have a tale they tell each other when they do reflect on the past.

“Once upon a time, there was a mom and two daughters, and they lived with a crazy person for a really long time. And then they came out of the backyard, and there [were] ups and there [were] downs, and they met a whole lot of amazing people and they lived their life.”

The final episode of Ellen Degeneres’s self-titled talk show aired on May 26 after an eventful 19-season run. Degeneres has had countless celebrity guests join her onstage over the years, which has made for some interesting tidbits, to say the least. Actress and comedian Julia Louis-Dreyfus recently appeared on one of the show’s final episodes, where she learned that she holds a special record among guests on The Ellen Show.

The End Of An Era

Louis-Dreyfus’s interview began with her and Degeneres discussing what it’s like to have a long-running project come to an end. Louis-Dreyfus knows the feeling better than most, having starred as the hilarious Elaine Benes on Seinfeld for all nine seasons before her time on Veep years later.

Ellen started, “You know how it’s—I mean, you’ve done amazing shows that come to an end. And then you do another amazing show, and—so, you know, there will be something else.”

“Of course! Without question. Without question. It’s a big transition,” Louis-Dreyfus responded.

The Record In Question

Degeneres moved to change the subject when she let Louis-Dreyfus in on a little secret: “But you—you have the record for cursing most on the show out of anyone we’ve ever had.”

Louis-Dreyfus was quick with a quip: “Well let me tell you something, I’m gonna make sure nobody beats that f*cking record in these last couple of episodes. So I’m gonna, I’m gonna make sure—solidify my position as much as I f*cking can during this interview.” 

Ellen responded: “So that’s twice, that’s twice within the first two minutes.”

And true to her nature of getting the last laugh, Louis Dreyfus punctuated Ellen’s statement with “Yeah. F*ck yeah,” and “I’m a lady.”

Viewers loved seeing these two leading ladies reunite for some laughter as Ellen comes to a close. It’ll be tough for Degeneres to transition away from her show after 19 years, but we wish her all the best in the next chapter of her life and career.

These days, true crime biopics are being released left and right. While they may be the latest trend for streamers, Hollywood has been making them for years. 2011’s hidden gem, Bernie, saw Jack Black as the titular Bernie Tiede, a beloved funeral director-turned-murderer who kept the body of a widow he befriended in his deep freeze for months before anyone caught on. The film’s end credits showed Black visiting the real Tiede in prison to conduct a character study, but where is Tiede today?

An Unlikely Friendship

In 1996, Bernie Tiede was in his late thirties and working as a funeral director in Carthage, Texas. He was widely respected in his community as a hard worker and compassionate presence for grieving loved ones. His services were known for being top-notch, and it was at one of these services that Tiede met the freshly widowed Marjorie Nugent. His attempts to check in on Nugent following her husband’s service led to the pair striking up a very close relationship, with Tiede quickly becoming Nugent’s sole companion, and eventually the sole beneficiary of her $10 million estate. This relationship was the subject of much gossip around Carthage as Marjorie Nugent was widely regarded as unpleasant. She was also forty years Tiede’s senior.

The Murder Of Marjorie Nugent

Nugent’s constant demands for attention mixed with her hard-to-please nature began to wear on Tiede. Tiede was learning why Nugent had such a bad reputation – at the expense of his free time and mental clarity. This struggle eventually led to Tiede shooting Nugent in the back multiple times, then preparing her body as he would for burial and keeping it in a freezer in her garage.

In order to keep up appearances, Tiede acted as if Nugent were still alive, canceling her appointments and sending on her well-wishes to anyone who asked. Tiede also spent large chunks of Nugent’s fortune on charity but failed to pay several of her debts. This led to her family becoming suspicious and filing a missing person report. The situation came to a head when nine months after her murder, Nugent’s body was discovered in the freezer during a search of her home.

Arrest And Sentencing

Tiede quickly confessed to murdering Nugent and expressed a great deal of remorse for his crime. He was initially sentenced to 50 years in prison but appealed, which ended up being a bad move. He was resentenced to life in prison where he was a model prisoner, leading health classes for inmates and participating in the prison choir.

Where Is Bernie Tiede Today?

In 2014, Tiede’s defense filed another appeal, citing childhood trauma as a contributing factor to the crime. This appeal was granted and Tiede was released pending a resentencing hearing. Interestingly, he spent his time as a “free” man staying with Richard Linklater, the director of the 2011 biopic based on the case. 

In 2016, Tiede was resentenced once again, this time for a term of 99 years. As of 2021, he is residing in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and will not be eligible for parole until 2029 when he’ll be 71-years-old.

Jessica Biel’s new limited series on Hulu, Candy, has shed renewed light on the brutal 1980 murder of Betty Gore, which was orchestrated by her neighbor and friend, Candy Montgomery. Montgomery was infamously acquitted of the crime, with her legal team citing “self-defense” as the motive for the 41 ax wounds found on Betty’s body. So, just how has Montgomery been getting on since the trial?

The Murder Of Betty Gore

On June 13, 1980, a concerned Allan Gore called upon some neighbors to check on his wife, Betty. Allan was on a business trip and had not been able to reach Betty for a number of hours. The door to the Gore residence in Wylie, Texas was unlocked, and when the neighbors entered, they discovered the couple’s young baby, Bethany, asleep in her crib.

When they continued walking through the home, they stumbled upon Betty’s mutilated body in a utility room. Initially believing that Betty had committed suicide, the neighbors called the police, who upon investigation discovered 41 wounds on her body consistent with a beating from a large ax.

Candy Montgomery’s Involvement And Arrest

It didn’t take long for investigators to suspect Candy Montgomery had something to do with Betty’s murder. It was discovered that Montogomery had engaged in an extramarital affair with Betty’s husband, Allan, for some months. Both Allan and Montgomery were reportedly bored and unhappy in their respective marriages and meticulously planned the affair down to the last detail, taking a rather businesslike approach to the matter. Eventually, Betty became suspicious of Allan and the two decided to go through a marriage-strengthening program. This went well for the couple, and Allan voiced to Montgomery a desire to end the affair.

When interrogated, Montgomery claimed that on the day of the murder, Betty had confronted her about the affair and had wielded a three-foot-long ax in an attempt to harm her. Montgomery maintains that she acted in self-defense by obtaining the weapon and turning it on Betty. Montgomery never denied her involvement in the murder, and she was arrested and tried before a jury.

The Trial

While the evidence was stacked largely against Montgomery, the defense did make a couple of intriguing arguments. For one, the murder weapon belonged to the Gores and was kept in their garage, somewhere Montgomery had never been. This made the matter of premeditation somewhat murky: If Montgomery had no prior knowledge of the ax being in the Gores’ garage, how could she have planned to murder Betty with it that day?

Another tactic the defense team used was to bring to the stand several psychologists who had evaluated Montgomery. One of these psychologists had even used hypnosis on Montgomery to unearth childhood trauma. The witness testified that Montgomery was triggered when Betty apparently “shushed” her, something her mother had done during her childhood. The argument was that this trigger essentially caused Montgomery to go into a dissociative trance during the commission of the crime and not realize what she was doing.

Ultimately these arguments were convincing enough to the jury, and Montgomery was found not guilty, walking away a free woman. For obvious reasons, this verdict caused a tremendous uproar from the community.

Where Is Candy Montgomery Today?

Montgomery’s husband surprisingly stood by her in the aftermath of the ordeal, though their marriage ended four years later. Montgomery dropped her married name and now goes by Candy Wheeler, her maiden name. It’s been reported that she resides in Georgia and works with her daughter as a family therapist—an ironic gig for a woman who admitted to stabbing a friend 41 times.

Warner Bros.’ 1973 horror film The Exorcist has remained one of the most famous movies in its genre for close to half a century, and for good reason. At the time of its release, the special effects were the best the world had seen, and the shock value of certain scenes had the ability to stick with viewers long after they watched. However, the film unknowingly featured something even more terrifying than any special effect: a real-life murderer. Here is the story of Paul Bateson.

How Bateson Scored The Role

Paul Bateson was born in Pennsylvania on August 24, 1940. In his early twenties, he served in the Army and moved to New York City upon discharge. Bateson then trained to become a radiological technician and scored a job at New York University Medical Center (NYUMC), where it is reported that he was popular among his coworkers.

After several years, in 1972, director William Friedkin visited NYUMC to conduct some research about various medical procedures he was considering showcasing in an upcoming film: you guessed it, The Exorcist. Friedkin was so impressed with Bateson’s extensive knowledge that he asked him to be an extra in the movie.

Sure enough, Bateson made an appearance in one of The Exorcist’s most memorable scenes. Bateson plays a medical technician who is prepping Regan, the film’s main character, for a series of tests to determine if any of her troubling behavior can be explained medically. Bateson is heard giving Regan instructions and providing bedside care as she prepares to undergo the tests. 

The scene was later praised by medical professionals for its accuracy and remains one of the most famous scenes from the film.

The Murder Of Addison Verrill

Film reporter Addison Verrill was found dead in his New York apartment on September 14, 1977. It appeared that Verrill had been brutally stabbed and while he had put up a fight, there were no signs of forced entry into the home and nothing of value was stolen. At the time, it was speculated that Verrill may have been targeted due to his identity as a gay man.

Bateson’s ego and desire to set the record straight ended up leading to his arrest, as he called a journalist multiple times to give details pertaining to the crime. Eventually, a friend of Bateson’s called the same journalist to identify Bateson as the killer, and he was brought into custody and later confessed. Bateson was convicted of the murder in 1979 and sentenced to 20 years to life in prison.

Suspected Serial Killer?

While the murder of Verrill was the only crime for which Bateson was convicted, police had some sneaking suspicions that it may not have been the only violent crime he had committed. A total of six dismembered bodies had been found in the Hudson River over the previous two years, and all wore clothing traced back to a store that catered to the gay community.

Additionally, it was reported that the bags that the bodies were disposed of had writing on them connecting them to NYUMC, Bateson’s place of employment. Lastly, the wounds on the bodies indicated that whoever committed the crime was skilled with a knife. 

However, there was never any physical evidence to connect Bateson to the crimes, so therefore he was never charged, tried, or convicted. It is interesting to note, however, that Bateson’s implication in these crimes so intrigued The Exorcist director William Friedkin that he went to visit Bateson in prison and was inspired to create his movie Cruisers as a result of the visit.

Where Is Paul Bateson Now?

Bateson was released from prison in 2003 at the age of 62. While not much is known about his whereabouts since his release, a Paul Bateson with the same social security number as the killer is reported by the Social Security Administration to have died in 2012 at the age of 80. Whether Bateson is still alive or not, he has been immortalized through one of Hollywood’s most famous horror films.

The ongoing legal battle between ex-spouses Johnny Depp and Amber Heard has been dominating the press for years, ever since their 2016 divorce brought to light allegations of domestic violence from both sides. The expensive back-and-forth of multiple defamation lawsuits has taken a hefty toll on each star’s net worth. With the trial finally ending on June 1, 2022 after six weeks of testimony, just what is the state of Heard’s finances?

Amber Heard’s Pre-Trial Net Worth

It can be difficult, even for those heavily invested in the couple’s conflict, to keep track of all the information that is out there, so let’s start with this: As of 2022, Heard’s net worth was difficult to find, with estimates ranging between $2.5 million and $8 million, which was still a far cry from Depp’s net worth.

The couple reached an initial divorce settlement of $7 million in 2016, but of course, this was before the $50 million defamation suit Depp brought against Heard for her defamatory 2018 op-ed in The Washington Post, and Heard’s subsequent $100 million countersuit, the joint trial of which captivated the world for its six-week duration.

What The Verdict Means For Amber Heard

As you most likely know by now, the jury largely ruled in Depp’s favor. He was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and punitive damages of $5 million, though the punitive damages were reduced to $350,000. Still, that’s a whopping $10.4 million that Heard owes Depp. Heard herself was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages due to multiple defamatory statements made by Depp’s former attorney, bringing the total amount owed to around $8.4 million.

So, how did this ruling affect Heard’s bottom line? Her lawyer recently told Today that she would “absolutely not” be able to pay the damages. This certainly appears to be true, with Celebrity Net Worth reporting that Heard is now worth negative $6 million. It is important to note that Heard’s legal fees for this trial were largely covered by her homeowner’s insurance, so she’s not on the hook for her lawyer’s paycheck. However, it’s highly likely we’ll see an appeal or a settlement in the near future.

Viewers are still reeling from NBC’s most recent true crime miniseries, The Thing About Pam. It seems crazy that such a cast of characters could come out of a real-life tragedy, but that’s just how the stars aligned. So, where are those involved in the story today?

Where Is District Attorney Joel Schwartz Now?

The miniseries proved that going up against county prosecutor Leah Askey twice is no easy feat. However, Joel Schwartz, played in the series by Josh Duhamel, was determined to get the job done for his client, Russ Faria. After scoring an exoneration for Russ in 2015, Schwartz stayed in Missouri to continue his law career and serves today as a criminal defense lawyer at the St. Louis firm Rosenblum Schwartz & Fry. 

Interestingly, Schwartz was also happy to lend his experience with the Betsy Faria case to producers of The Thing About Pam. He spent time in the writers’ room and even disclosed his liquor of choice (bourbon) so that Duhamel’s character could be as accurate as possible.

Where Is Judge Christina Mennemeyer Now?

Though Christina Mennemeyer presided as judge over Russ’ first trial, she was not involved in the retrial wherein he was found not guilty. As it turns out, multiple cases Mennemeyer presided over have been overturned. The judge was suspended from her position in the Missouri Supreme Court for a period of six months in 2017 following accusations of misconduct. She was eventually unseated from the Supreme Court in 2018 in an election, though she continues to deny any accusations of malpractice.

Where Is Russ Faria Today?

It’s hard to think of anyone in the series who was treated more unfairly than Russ Faria–except, of course, his wife. Russ was immediately detained for Betsy’s murder and cops closed in on him without taking any other evidence into account. This failure to perform a thorough investigation landed Russ in prison for two years and permanently damaged his reputation.

Russ maintained his innocence throughout the ordeal, and in 2020 was awarded $2 million in damages following his release from prison. This money came as the result of a civil lawsuit filed by Russ against three investigators in his wife’s case. In the suit, Russ alleged the officers “fabricated evidence” and “failed to investigate the other obvious suspect.”

Where Are Betsy Faria’s Daughters Now?

Betsy’s daughters, Mariah and Leah Day, were both pitted against their father without having time to process what happened to their mother. Both girls have stayed away from the public eye since the ordeal, but they did recently participate in a July 2021 interview with FOX 2 St. Louis to discuss their now-strained relationship with Russ. 

Mariah detailed how every time she brought up the possibility of Pam Hupp being involved in Betsy’s murder, she was brushed off by law enforcement and made to feel invalid for her concerns. “They tore our family apart, and not only did we lose our mom, but we lost both of our parents because of their sh*tty investigation,” Leah added. Unfortunately, their relationship with Russ remains complicated.

Where Is Mark Hupp Now?

Mark Hupp, Pam Hupp’s husband at the time of Betsy’s murder, continued to stay by Pam’s side through two additional murder investigations before finally filing for divorce in 2020, after 37 years together. Mark stated that the marriage was “irretrievably broken.” While Mark has kept his life private, he does still reside in Missouri. It should be noted that the pair’s children stay out of the public eye as well and are not active on social media.

NBC’s recent miniseries The Thing About Pam has shed renewed light on a stranger-than-fiction murder case. While the titular Pam Hupp is suspected of killing up to three people, the series focuses specifically on her plot to murder her best friend, Besty Faria, and cover it up by placing the blame on Betsy’s husband, Russ. The true nature of the story has many wondering what has become of some major players in the trial. So, what is Leah Askey, the prosecutor in Russ Faria’s original case, up to today?

What Happened After The Trial?

Askey served as the prosecuting attorney for both of Russ Faria’s murder trials. Following Russ’s 2013 conviction for the murder of his wife Betsy, he was granted a 2015 appeal, which Askey also prosecuted. Russ was exonerated the second time after it was found that important evidence was withheld at the time of his original trial and he was granted $2 million in damages. 

Askey held office as the prosecuting attorney of Lincoln County, Missouri, until 2018 when she lost her re-election campaign to Mike Wood, who vowed to officially charge Pam Hupp with the murder of Betsy. Though Hupp is already serving a life sentence for a separate murder, she has denied all allegations related to Betsy’s death. The case played a big part in the election of Wood.

Does She Have Regrets?

Askey’s handling of the Faria case has come under scrutiny, in large part due to her perceived failure to investigate Hupp as a suspect from the get-go. Many believed that she at the least turned a blind eye to compelling evidence, and at most conspired with Hupp to cover up her involvement in the murder. 

In a recent interview with KSDK, Askey admits she regrets ever running for prosecuting attorney. “I loved the job, and I did a good job… but the toll that this particular case has taken on myself and on my family and on my friends, and frankly on our system in general, to me wasn’t worth it.” Askey continues, “I absolutely wouldn’t do it again.”

Where Is Leah Today?

Today, Askey works at her own private law firm called Chaney Law Group. While the world is captivated by her portrayal in The Thing About Pam, it sounds like Askey is focusing on distancing herself from the case that she would rather forget.

@Home With Tori Trailer Missing Dean?

On April 4, 2022, streaming service VIZIO released a trailer on their YouTube Channel for Spelling’s brand new reality show, @Home With Tori, which will be available to stream in May of this year. While the trailer was full of fun with Spelling and friends, there was one aspect of the trailer that we couldn’t help but notice: McDermott is absent.

Spelling is also without her wedding ring in the footage, which could be a telling sign as to whether or not her marriage is in good shape, though it’s never good to guess based on this. While McDermott’s absence from the trailer could be a giveaway that the pair could be breaking up, these rumors have been around for years and they are still together. We will have to tune in to the show to see if this is addressed.

When you think of the beautiful Amanda Seyfried, you probably think of one of her iconic roles in Mean Girls, Mama Mia!, Dear John, or even her recent portrayal of Elizabeth Holmes in Hulu’s The Dropout. Current Day

Seyfried’s most recent win was her role as scorned scientist and businesswoman, Elizabeth Holmes, in Hulu’s biopic miniseries, The Dropout. Prior to this project, Seyfried starred in the drama A Mouthful of Air, released in October of 2021.

In addition to her bustling career, Seyfried stays busy with a family of her own: a five-year-old daughter and 18-month-old son with her husband, a fellow actor by the name of Thomas Sadoski.

It’s no secret for anyone who follows royal drama that Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle, has some thoughts and opinions about his daughter and her husband Prince Harry. However, in the latest entry on Markle’s YouTube channel, he made an interesting claim about Queen Elizabeth’s health that was debunked this Tuesday when she attended the Thanksgiving service honoring her late husband, Prince Philip.

A Long-Running Feud

Thomas Markle and his daughter Meghan have been at odds for a while, with Thomas going so far as to support his other daughter, Samantha, in a lawsuit against her half-sister for alleged false information given in a now-famous interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Thomas made waves recently when, after quite the history of animosity with Meghan, he began a YouTube channel called “Remarkable Friendship,” where he and his pal Karl Larsen give their latest takes on Harry and Meghan’s behaviors and goings-on.

Thomas Markle Shares Concerns For Her Majesty

Episode two of “Remarkable Friendship” did not start out any differently. However, Thomas showed a surprising shred of decency when Larsen brought up the topic of the queen’s health. Thomas responded: “She’s in a wheelchair. Hopefully a short time; no one knows for sure. I certainly encourage everyone to say your prayers for the queen, I think she’s an incredible woman.”

While it’s interesting to see Thomas speak so highly of the queen right after bashing his daughter with such ease, it makes sense that he would hold Her Majesty in high regard. After all, Thomas’ grandchildren are Queen Elizabeth’s great-grandchildren, and the queen has also been desperate to meet them.

As for the wheelchair claim: Thomas has not been the only source to allege that the queen is wheelchair-bound, but it’s hard to see where the information was coming from. Thomas isn’t on speaking terms with his daughter, not that she would necessarily have the information anyway since she and Harry abandoned their royal roles. 

A Claim, Debunked

The queen held her own on Tuesday when attending the long-awaited thanksgiving service held in memory of her late husband, Prince Philip. She was able to walk with minimal intervention and assistance from a cane and the arm of her son, Prince Andrew.

While she did take a shorter route to her seat than is customary, the 95-year-old managed to shut down any rumors that she was unable to walk on her own.

Just One Last Quip

Did you really think Thomas would let his video end on a compassionate note? Of course, he had to exit with some pointed sarcasm. Larsen asked Thomas if he would consider attending the queen’s upcoming jubilee, and Markle replied, “I would love to go to the jubilee, but I’m too worried about security. I’m afraid… Maybe Harry can come and protect me.”

This jab pokes fun at Harry’s reluctance to return to the UK. Harry has cited security concerns as the reason he is avoiding his home country.

While the drama can be entertaining to feed into, Queen Elizabeth’s obvious display of mobility proves that we should be hesitant to trust any claim Thomas Markle makes about the royal family.

In September of 2021, HBO Max premiered the docuseries The Way Down, a deep dive and exposé of controversial Remnant Fellowship founder Gwen Shamblin Lara, whom many have described as a “cult leader.” Shortly before production wrapped on the stranger-than-fiction story, Shamblin Lara was involved in a plane crash that claimed her life as well as the lives of her husband, son-in-law, and fellow church leaders.

The docuseries was released as scheduled, and as such, not much was said about the aftermath of the accident. With new episodes of the docuseries not set to air until April 28, many viewers have been left with one question: What became of the Remnant Fellowship?

Who Was Gwen Shamblin Lara?

Born in Memphis in 1955, Shamblin Lara grew up to study nutrition, which combined with her faith, led her to found a weight-loss-based Bible study called “The Weigh Down Workshop,” soon amassing a large enough following to create what was dubbed “The Weigh-Down Diet.” The diet swore by spirituality as a way to free oneself from cravings and food temptations. 

Following the combined success of these endeavors, Shamblin Lara founded her own church, which she called the Remnant Fellowship.

What Is The Remnant Fellowship?

According to their website, the Remnant Fellowship is “an international community of people who are finding renewed hope, profound love and deep purpose by putting the undiluted teachings of Jesus Christ into practice.” Though based in Brentwood, Tennessee, the church has over 1,500 members in over 150 congregations across the world. What sets the church apart from other Christian denominations is its divisively strict adherence to the teachings of the Bible: The church teaches that “husbands are kind like Christ, women are submissive, and children obey their parents.”

Making Headlines

The church found itself in hot water in 2003 when two members of its congregation were accused of killing their eight-year-old son through repeated “discipline,” comprised of beating and locking the child in a chest for hours. In the docuseries, ex-members of the church allege that Shamblin Lara herself advised parents to beat their children with glue sticks, belts, and wooden spoons to get them to obey. 

Remnant Fellowship was raided as part of the police investigation into the death, but no legal action was ultimately taken against the church. The child’s parents were each sentenced to life in prison in 2007.

The Remnant Fellowship once again made headlines on May 29, 2021, when a plane crash claimed the lives of Shamlin Lara, her husband Joe Lara, her son-in-law Brandon Hannah, and three other church leaders. The plane was piloted by Joe Lara, and an official cause of the crash has yet to be determined.

Is The Church Still Active Today?

In a statement released by Shamblin Lara’s daughter, Elizabeth Shamblin Hannah, it was written that she would be taking over the leadership role from her mother. In addition to losing her mother in the crash, Shamblin Hannah also lost her stepfather and husband. Shamblin Hannah wrote, “At this time in my life, I find myself with the wonderful opportunity to follow in my mother’s footsteps in serving our beautiful church, and I am grateful for her example of decades of laying down her life for others.”

Controversially, it was found that none of the millions Shamblin Lara amassed from patrons of the church over the years was left to the church in her will. In fact, all of it was left to be split between her two children. Despite this, the church is still active today under not only the leadership of Elizabeth Shamblin Hannah, but tens of other deacons and pastors who can be found on the church’s official website.

Episodes 4 and 5 of The Way Down are set to be released on HBO Max on April 28, 2022. It is anticipated that these episodes will focus more on the plane crash and how the church has handled the aftermath of the event.

Derek Bieri, the host of the popular YouTube channel Vice Grip Garage, describes his car-related content as “budget builds, rescues, and how to’s for the common folk.”

He must be doing something right, as he has amassed nearly 1.2 million faithful subscribers and close to 240 million views since joining the platform in 2007—not to mention his own TV show, Roadworthy Rescues, which premiered on Motortrend in September 2022.

Derek, his wife Jessica Bieri, and their sons have always lived and worked out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, with shops in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. They recently made a major move to Tennessee and uploaded a video explaining why.

Major Savings

Derek described the cost of living in Minnesota versus Tennessee as “night and day.” Between multiple mortgages and rent payments, utilities, taxes, and insurance, moving to Tennessee is saving the Bieris “tremendous amounts of money.” Tennessee also does not charge income tax, which has surely contributed greatly to those tremendous savings.

Derek went on to explain how when he started out on YouTube, he was putting a lot of money into his channel and producing content, without much return. This perspective has allowed him to see what a financial difference the move has made for his family and his business.

Conveniently Located

Derek’s wife, Jessica, detailed how Derek used to have to drive over an hour between shops one way, which ended up totaling roughly 30 days a year spent traveling.

Derek contributed, “I honestly worked 7 days a week. … it got to the point where I wasn’t really seeing my family very much, and that is very, very, very important to me, so we wanted to make a change.”

Moving to a more central location has allowed Derek to be present for more family activities, including Friday night movies and pizza parties with his wife and sons.

When the Bieris lived near the Canadian border, they lamented that while there was the occasional local car show, there weren’t many big events put on close by. Many events Derek travels to are in Florida, which from Minneapolis, was a three-day drive for him. This means Derek would have to block out a full week just to attend a one-day event.

The move has cut driving time to Florida down to one day, helping Derek “save on motels, food, and fuel.” Surely, Derek’s many fans are glad that his move has allowed him to be more actively involved in major car shows and events.

Raising The Kids

Jessica shared that another reason the pair chose to move had to do with the lifestyle they wanted for their growing sons.

“We were both raised kind of in a country or farm setting, and we always wanted that for our children, to be able to experience all the things that we got to experience, just running outside and playing with no worry, being able to jump on your 4-wheeler, dirt bike, or whatever you might have, and just go explore.”

Derek shared that while there are many beautiful and spacious locations to raise a family in Minnesota, simply driving his snowmobile on his property had prompted passersby to call the police. In Tennesee, this would be viewed as more normal, and it is important to the Bieris to have a good deal of freedom with how to use their property.

Better Weather

Lastly, Derek and Jessica shared what they described as the main deciding factor in the move: weather. Due to the nature of his videos, Derek can be limited by freezing temperatures. He said,  ”I’m rolling around on the ground pretty much nonstop outside…three to four months a year, I can’t produce content for you guys.”

Moving to Tennessee provides more stable and warm temperatures, allowing Derek to produce the content his viewers want year-round. And it’s clear from the video’s closing statement that Derek’s viewers are his top priority.

“Our goal is: always put a smile on you folks’ faces, entertain you, where you can sit down with your family or your kids and just enjoy some stuff and hopefully get you motivated and get you out to the shop and garage. So we just decided, you know, we needed to find better weather where we could do what we do best and have fun doing it.”

Whether he’s uploading his content to YouTube or appearing on Motortrend in his very own TV show, it’s clear Bieri has a bright future ahead of him, no matter where he’s put down roots.

There’s no doubt that Robert Pattinson is one of the most versatile actors alive today. From playing a disturbed lighthouse keeper in Robert Eggers’ 2019 film The Lighthouse to the titular role in Matt Reeve’s recent blockbuster, The Batman, and tons of roles in between, Pattinson captivates and remains believable with even the most far-fetched characters.

He’s also known for telling the best stories in interviews. However, it has recently come to light that Pattinson isn’t always so truthful when being interviewed. Could one of his most famous stories be completely fabricated? Here’s what we know.

Pattinson’s Penchant For Storytelling

It’s pretty much common knowledge at this point that Robert Pattinson is one of the more entertaining stars to interview. Ever since his role as Edward Cullen in the Twilight saga catapulted him to superstardom, he has been shocking and delighting audiences with tales of unwashed hair, hand modeling, and snail rescue, but one 2009 story really made waves: Pattinson claims to have invited a stalker to dinner with him and bored her so much that he never saw her again.

The story was told in an interview Pattinson gave on The Late Show with David Letterman when he was promoting the second movie in the Twilight series: New Moon. “There was this one girl who was kind of waiting outside my apartment every single day, and I was so chronically bored that, just one day, she’d been out there for about three weeks, and I said ‘Hey, do you wanna just go to dinner or something? I mean, no one else wants to hang out with me.’”

The superfan obviously accepted Pattinson’s invitation, but the encounter failed to impress her. Pattinson continued, “I kind of complained about everything in my life for about two hours.” This was enough to drive her off, and after sticking Pattinson with the bill, the woman left, never to be seen outside his apartment again.

The story got big laughs from the audience, and understandably so. Many news outlets covered it at the time, and it has remained a fun anecdote for fans of Pattinson to share ever since. But is it really true?

Caught In A Lie

After a few years of great stories, some people began to question how so many crazy things could happen to the same person. When promoting his 2011 film Water For Elephants, Pattinson shared that the first time he went to the circus, he watched a clown die. A week later, a German journalist challenged the story, asking if it was really true. Pattinson hilariously confessed, “I actually made the whole thing up…Someone asked me what my experience with the circus was and I was like, ‘I have nothing interesting to say.’ I don’t know why I said that!”

This admission obviously caused some more of Pattinson’s tall tales to come into question, including a story that his sisters convinced him his mother was pregnant, Pattinson claimed this happened on his 18th birthday, April Fool’s Day, but his actual birthday is May 13th, making this another lie. While we can’t necessarily blame Pattinson for keeping himself entertained in a harmless way, his lies do beg the question: did he really take his stalker to dinner?

The Verdict

As much as we would love to believe this story, it simply isn’t likely. No matter how boring and isolating it might be to film on location, celebrities are especially aware of the danger stalkers pose. We’ll give credit where it’s due; Pattinson did provide details that made the story more believable: he was filming a movie in Spain at the time, the girl took him to her parents’ restaurant. But given what a gifted actor Pattinson is, it’s not surprising that he would be able to improvise such details on the spot. This won’t stop us from watching all of his interviews, though–they’re just too entertaining!

Despite cementing himself in infamy by committing some of the most gruesome and notorious crimes in history, serial killer Ed Kemper has managed to make the most of his prison sentence. Given that he was the inspiration for Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs, it may be hard to imagine how.

Kemper famously lent himself to the FBI to help them understand the psychology behind serial killers, but did you know that he was also involved in an organization that assisted the blind?

Kemper’s Horrific Crimes

Kemper claims to have become aware of his dark and violent desires around the age of eight or nine when he witnessed a fake beheading at a magic show. The urge to kill followed him into his adolescence, with him killing a series of family cats over the years before targeting people. At age 15, Kemper murdered both of his grandparents “to see what it felt like.” This crime caused him to be sent to a mental institution, where it was discovered that he had an exceptionally high IQ.

Kemper’s juvenile record was wiped clean and he moved to live with his mother, who would later become another of his victims, but not before Kemper terrorized a number of hitchhikers in the 1970s. At six feet nine inches tall and 280 pounds, it was easy for him to overpower his prey.

What put Kemper’s crimes a cut above the rest in terms of shock value was the abhorrent way he treated the bodies, often dismembering, skinning, and committing other unspeakable acts before burying them in various locations (including a head he buried in his mother’s garden). For his crimes, Kemper is now serving a life sentence at the California Medical Facility.

Good Behavior?

If you’re a Netflix true-crime junkie, you may know from watching Mindhunter that Kemper enjoyed speaking to the FBI. In fact, before those interviews, he loved attention so much that he called the police on himself following the lack of press surrounding his crimes. Through regular interviews, Kemper was able to actually help the FBI gain a better understanding of common characteristics shared by serial killers.

This wasn’t the only way he spent his time in prison. It was reported in 1989 that Kemper was part of something called The Blind Project, a nonprofit movement to help members of two marginalized identities at once: the blind, and those who are incarcerated. Kemper was the voice behind a slew of audiobooks recorded for use in the organization and volunteered for years until his 2015 stroke left him unable to do so. Kemper’s Current Whereabouts

As of 2022, Kemper is still alive, and at age 73 is still serving out his sentence in California. Reportedly, Kemper is content to be in prison as he knows it is where he will die; given the nature of his crimes, there is obviously no chance of his ‘good behavior’ getting him a lesser sentence.

It can cause conflicting emotions to hear that someone as bad a person as Ed Kemper is capable of good deeds. Kemper’s negative contributions to the world will always outweigh his positive ones, but in the end, at least he has done at least one positive thing in his life.

The dating scene is tricky to navigate for most everyone, and coming from a famous family is sure to bring additional challenges to the quest for a suitor. Maybe that’s why so many children of celebrities tend to date each other? Judd Apatow’s daughter, Iris Apatow, and Kate Hudson’s son, Ryder Robinson, made headlines as a couple following Robinson’s recent Valentine’s Day post, but these two are far from the only pair of celeb offspring to couple up.

Ah, Young Love

Ryder Robinson, son of Kate Hudson and her ex-husband, Black Crowes lead singer Chris Robinson, made his relationship Instagram official this past Valentine’s Day. Captioned with a simple red heart, the photo shows Robinson planting a kiss on the cheek of his girlfriend, Iris Apatow. Apatow is the daughter of Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann. Apatow responded in the comments of the post with a series of smiley faces. Here’s hoping the pair’s relationship is a long and happy one!

Frances Bean Cobain And Riley Hawk

Frances Bean Cobain, daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, also took to Instagram early this year to soft-launch her relationship with Riley Hawk, Tony Hawk’s son. The 29-year-old broke her social media hiatus to list Hawk among the sources of the “great amount of joy” in her life. We don’t quite know why, but this match makes perfect sense. 

Jasmin Lawrence And Eric Murphy

Comedy fans everywhere were shocked and delighted in the summer of 2021 when children of two industry greats, Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence, announced that they were dating. It appears that the couple is still very much in love, which has been confirmed in a recent interview Lawrence gave to InTouch. “We became really good friends, we bonded on a lot of things. Obviously, we have similar backgrounds, so we understood each other on a certain level, and over time, you know, it just became more.”

Mark Ronson And Grace Gummer

In the late summer of 2021, music producer Mark Ronson, who happens to be the stepson of musician Mick Jones, announced his marriage to Meryl Streep’s stepdaughter, Grace Gummer. In a birthday post on his 46th birthday, Ronson paid an adorable tribute to Gummer, writing “I hope I spend every one of these birthdays by your side til my last day. And beyond. Forever and ever yours.” The couple wed in a smaller ceremony than they had hoped due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Sasha Spielberg and Harry McNally

Famed restauranteur Keith McNally shared big news in January of this year: his son Harry is now engaged to Steven Spielberg’s daughter, Sasha Spielberg. The pair began dating in November 2020, and it didn’t take long for Spielberg to know that McNally was the one for her. In her diary the morning after the pair’s first date, Spielberg wrote “I’m gonna marry Harry!” We are eagerly awaiting details about what is sure to be an elegant wedding.

Christina Hendricks shocked thousands when she shared her tumultuous experience of trying to find designers to work with for awards shows. It’s turned out she’s not alone in her struggle, with countless other stars getting snubbed by sought-after designers for ridiculous reasons.

No One Would Style Her

While it’s hard to imagine passing up the opportunity to style Esquire’s “Sexiest Woman Alive,” many designers did so in 2012. Even after securing the title, Hendricks told the Daily Record, “not one designer in town” would loan her a dress due to her size 12 figure. “They only lend out a size 0 or 2.” Hendricks continued, “Then it becomes downright annoying because all these designers are saying ‘We love Mad Men, we love Christina, but we won’t make her a dress.’” Hendricks still manages to stun every time she steps out onto the red carpet, however.

Even Beyonce Knowles Struggled

Curating a look for music powerhouse Beyonce Knowles is undoubtedly every stylist’s dream today, but would you believe that wasn’t always the case? When accepting the Fashion Icon Award at the 2016 CFDA Awards, Knowles recounted the struggle her girls’ group, Destiny’s Child, encountered early in their career: “High-end labels didn’t want to dress four black country curvy girls, and we couldn’t afford designer dresses and couture.” Luckily, Knowles’ mother is a gifted seamstress, and along with Knowles’ late uncle, the two crafted early outfits for Destiny’s Child. Knowles continued, “My mother actually designed my wedding dress, my prom dress, my first CFDA dress, my first Grammy dress, and the list goes on and on.” Knowles’ family helped her turn this setback into an asset, starting her on the path to becoming the fashion icon she is today.

Megan Mullally’s SAG Search

Despite being set to host the 2019 Screen Actors Guild Awards, actress Megan Mullally couldn’t find a designer who was willing to work with her. “Designers do not send me dresses. I’m online scrolling through the gowns sections of various websites, which I know how to do pretty well at this point.” When she settled on a gown from Saks fifth avenue, the store ended up canceling her order. “Oh, the glamor of it all,” Mullally lamented on Instagram. Amid responses from infuriated fans, designer Christian Siriano offered to step up and design a dress for the star, but it turned out to be too little too late, with Mullally ultimately opting for a stunning black number from Alexander McQueen’s online store.

Bryce Dallas Howard Frequents Department Stores

Bryce Dallas Howard turned heads at the 2016 Golden Globes in a gorgeous black and metallic blue number. When asked which designer she was wearing, Howard proudly stated that she had picked up the dress herself at Neiman Marcus earlier in the week. She went on to explain that she prefers the wide selection of size 6 dresses a department store can offer over the “maybe one option” she would receive from a designer: “I realized that I needed to stop trying to have a conversation with fashion–that I needed to get back to having a conversation with myself, in what just looks and feels best for the thing I’m going to tonight. I am not sample size, I have never been sample size, I will never be sample size.” While the lack of size inclusivity in high fashion is a very real and very frustrating issue, Howard does a great job choosing her own red carpet looks.

This list is far from comprehensive and goes to show that while the fashion industry is moving in the right direction, things are far from equal for those with different body types. Here’s hoping that if stars continue using their platforms to put discriminatory designers on blast, we will see some systemic change in the near future.
