Daniel Sandler, also known as the “Patron Saint of Blusher,” is a phenomenal international makeup artist. He started his eponymous makeup line in 2005, and we love the brand for a variety of reasons.

Daniel Sandler Makeup is refreshingly dedicated to inclusivity, both in its marketing and its products. The brand’s website says, “Our makeup is for all ages, genders, skin types, and skin tones.” There’s even a section dedicated to demonstrating their products on mature skin.

Product ingredients are listed (with explanations) right on the brand site, a step toward transparency that can help consumers make more informed decisions. Plus, the brand is 100% cruelty-free and committed to sustainability practices to reduce its environmental impact. What’s not to love?

But if we could only choose one Daniel Sandler item to add to our makeup bags, the Watercolour Liquid Cheek Colour would be our pick.

About their hero product, Sandler said, “I was working on shoots where I needed the makeup to stay in place but I couldn’t find a blusher that ticked all the boxes.

“I wanted something beautifully sheer, easy to blend, but also super water-resistant in lots of shades. I couldn’t find what I wanted even in professional beauty stores, so I decided to make my own.”

For mature skin, liquid blush is often a much better option as opposed to powder blush, which can dry out the skin and settle into fine lines, resulting in a heavy, cakey texture on the face.

Not so with the Watercolour Liquid Cheek Colours. The liquid blush formula easily blends into the skin, providing buildable and long-lasting color (seriously, this stuff is basically bulletproof). It’s lightweight, water-resistant, and hydrating—so you’ll feel comfortable and luminous.

You can pick your perfect shade (we’ve swatched 12 of them below) or customize your own by mixing shades together. They’re available in blush, illuminator, and bronzer shades with matte, shimmer, and satin finishes. They can even be used on the eyes and lips for an extra pop of color.

Swatches of 12 different Daniel Sandler Watercolour blushes and illuminators

Daniel Sandler knows that finding the right shade and learning how to apply liquid blush can be intimidating, especially if you’ve only ever used powder blush. Fortunately, he’s provided a shade finder tool along with a beginner’s guide to help you choose your perfect product and learn how to apply it.

There are even tips on how to apply blush for your face shape. Once you get the hang of applying liquid blush (in no time at all), you may even find it faster, easier, and more flattering than powder blush.

One reviewer said, ”I instantly get the most gorgeous lit-from-within glow that I’ve only seen in professional model photographs, and that’s at age 57. Absolutely wonderful products, all of them!”

Over 40? This Genius Eyeshadow Hack Will Create A Natural Looking Smokey Eye In Seconds https://www.suggest.com/applying-eyeshadow-over-40-spoon-technique/2720040/ Sun, 29 Jan 2023 20:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2720040 A closeup on a woman having eyeshadow applied

There is an undeniable power to makeup. The combination of the right products and techniques can not only enhance our features, but at times even transform them (a makeup facelift anyone?).

As we age, not only do we need to be cognizant of finding products for changing skin, but our technique needs to be tweaked as well.

In particular, our eyeshadow application is important to modify. For various reasons, the skin around the eyes begins to sag. To combat that, our eyeshadow needs to go a bit higher on the brow bone so it can be seen.

Kelly Gropp, a 40+ influencer, demonstrated an easy hack for this very problem using a humble spoon. Plus, if you have hooded eyes or are a novice at eyeshadow, this tip is a helpful trick too.

While it might feel unnatural at first to apply eyeshadow so high on your brow bone, the point of the spoon technique is to help train yourself to do just that. Whatever color palette you choose to use, pick your medium-tone shade and gently follow the curve of the spoon with a fluffy eyeshadow brush.

To achieve a gradient, natural smoky look, Groop then applies a lighter shade in the inner corner of the eyelid (a great tip to help makes your eyes look wider and more awake), and a darker shade on the outside corner using the smaller end of her dual-sided eyeshadow brush. The size and density of the hairs on this brush make it easier to pack on the color just where you want it.

The trick to any eyeshadow look is all about blending, which Gropp demonstrates. Flipping back over to the fluffy end of her brush, she starts with small circular movements around the end corners and then sweeps the brush back and forth along the brow bone.

And that’s it! The final result is stunning but still natural. You could certainly follow up with eyeliner and of course, a generous swipe of mascara.

If you’re looking to achieve this look at home, we love this affordable dual-ended eyeshadow brush from JOAH and the cult-classic Urban Decay Naked2 Basics eyeshadow palette that features six neutral shades that look great on all skin tones (and is the perfect size for traveling).

Gropp ends the video by saying, “I love showing women over 40 how they can love their makeup again.” Make sure to give her a follow for tons of mature makeup tips.

How A Humble Lip Balm Can Fix Messy Makeup After A Long Day https://www.suggest.com/on-the-go-makeup-touch-up-tips/2715645/ Tue, 17 Jan 2023 22:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2715645 A blond woman holds a stick of lip balm

During pandemic times, video meetings became the norm, and for many of us virtual is our new way of life at work. And with our faces framed and cropped in the manner of a newscaster every day, makeup has become increasingly important (for some of us—if you abstain, power to you!).

Thankfully, makeup tutorials seem to have increased right alongside the rise in makeup-wearing.

Celebrity makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes has led the charge in minimal but impactful makeup ideas. She also shares tricks of the trade, and this one, which helps extend the life of your makeup look without washing your face and starting from scratch, is particularly genius. And it doesn’t require a full makeup bag to accomplish.

Now that we actually have places to go after work, repurposing our daytime makeup is key for saving time and minimizing hassle. Hughes’ technique requires just a few basic makeup staples that easily fit in your handbag, plus lip balm and your fingertips.

“I want to paint a picture for you,” she says. “The picture is your eyeshadow is creased, your foundation’s kinda greasy and oily-looking, your lipstick kinda wore away and there’s just not much definition in the face. You are out and about and you need to touch this up quickly.”

We’ve all been there. She recommends taking these next steps to revive your makeup, starting with clean, dry hands.

1. Fingers

Rub your hands together to warm them up, then gently swipe and/or dab under the eyes to remove any excess mascara or eyeshadow that may have fallen off. Gently massage the eyelids to smooth the eyeshadow and blend any creasing that may have formed. You might lose some makeup during this part, she says, but that’s okay.

2. Lip Balm

If you have dry skin, then this part is for you. But if you run oily, you might want to skip. Using a clear lip balm, add a little bit of the product to your fingertips and apply it on dull, dry, or flaky patches of skin to help rehydrate.

3. Concealer

Most of us carry around a tube of concealer, so grab that and add some dots of the product anywhere you could benefit from some coverage. Gently dab and blend with your fingertips. The key with this step is to apply lightly, so it doesn’t get cakey or uneven.

4. Lip Liner

Most makeup-wearers also typically carry around some lip product. And if you have to choose between liner and lipstick, go with the lip liner. After blending what lip color you have left with the lip balm, you can use it to redefine your lips.

5. Lipstick

If you’re willing to make room for another item, make it a tube of lipstick. You can add a little color to your lips, blend the product with your fingertips, and then get double duty out of the product by dabbing what remains on your cheeks.

6. Powder

Powder is another product that many of us carry, and it’s nice to have when you’re feeling a little sweaty and overly shiny. Dab it on anywhere that’s too shiny for your liking and you’re good to go!

The Best Makeup Tips For Mature Skin We Learned In 2022 https://www.suggest.com/best-makeup-tips-mature-skin/2703032/ Sat, 24 Dec 2022 18:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2703032 A smiling middle-aged woman applies blush

As we age, shifting hormones cause our skin to change. A decline in estrogen levels—which alters collagen and elastin production—cause dramatic shifts in skin texture and reduce hydration levels.

That means your smokey eye might not give the same smoldering look you once achieved. Makeup might settle into lines, breaking up the color. Blush doesn’t have that same livening effect it once did. And powders don’t play nice with drier skin.

But that doesn’t mean you have to give up on makeup. It’s easier than you might think to adapt your beauty products and makeup application techniques to work with your changing skin. Luckily we found some amazing experts and content creators this year who helped us do just that.

1. Place Blush Higher For A Facelift Effect

Instead of applying blush on the apples of the cheeks (as you’ve been advised to do probably since you started wearing blush), Christen Dominique, founder of Dominique Cosmetics, showed us that applying blush higher on the face can transform your appearance.

RELATED: Gen Z Is Obsessed With This ‘Weird’ Blush Application That Is Actually Genius For Mature Skin

She followed up recently with a clever hack for nailing that higher placement: place your thumb and forefinger in an L shape, with your thumb lining up under your cheekbone. Use the L shape as a border to create the perfect, lifted look.

2. SPF Makeup May Not Provide Enough Protection

SPF-infused makeup promises cosmetic benefits plus UVA/UVB protection. But experts say these products don’t always deliver on their promises, and they don’t really protect your skin the way you might think. Instead of relying on SPF-infused makeup to protect your skin from harmful sun rays, it’s best to use actual sunblock.

“You would need six to seven times the amount of makeup to make it as effective as standard sunscreen,” said Kim Harris of Prescott Medical Aesthetics.

3. Avoid Cakey Foundation With This Trick

Dermatologist Dr. Azadeh Shirazi revealed that if your foundation looks cakey, the makeup might not be the problem. To avoid the cakey look, first mist your skin with thermal spring water and apply hyaluronic acid to your dampened skin. Then apply your foundation, and blot the excess with a tissue-covered beauty blender.

  • Helps reduce sensitivity, restore skin balance & doesn’t dry out skin.
  • Softens & calms sensitive skin; helps reduce visible redness & burning sensations.

4. Tweak Your Makeup Application After 40

Updating the products we use as we age can make a big difference, but application methods are just as important. Erica Taylor created a reel about the “dos and don’ts” of makeup application for those over 40, covering contouring, blush application, and lip liner.

Her tips included placing contour higher than you’ve probably been taught—essentially on top of your cheekbones—for a lifted look, using cream blush instead of powder, and not lining your lips all the way around for a “happier, more youthful look.”

5. Define Your Eyes After 40 Without Using Eyeliner

Courtney Spencer—whose Instagram brand is all about hair and makeup over 40—showed us how to do a super versatile, mess-free eyeliner method that delivers a soft, smokey look using zero eyeliner. All you need are the right tools—a nice matte eyeshadow color and the fluffy end of an eyeshadow brush.

6. Apply Bronzer Under Your Eyes

Makeup artist Gucci Westman is a genius when it comes to natural-looking makeup for women over 40. The former Global Artistic Director for Revlon has worked with celebrity clients including Drew Barrymore, Natalie Portman, and Halle Berry, and her industry career dates back to the ’90s—so she knows her stuff.

RELATED: Julia Roberts Is A Fan Of This Serum Foundation With Hyaluronic Acid That’s Perfect For Mature Skin

Westman told her Instagram followers that her favorite trick for looking “naturally sun-kissed” is to apply bronzer horizontally across her forehead, underneath her eyes, on her eyelids, on the bridge of her nose, and around the eyes at the temples to connect to the cheeks. We were surprised, too, but it looks amazing.

7. ‘Drape’ Your Blush For A Fresh Look

Gen Z Instagram makeup influencers have been applying blush in unexpected ways. It’s a technique known as blush draping, and it actually harkens back to the ’70s.

Essentially, you use blush instead of contour and bronzer to sculpt your face. Blush draping brings more color and life to the skin, adding a “lit-from-within glow,” and it’s flattering on all ages and skin types. As an added bonus, it gives your face a lift—or at least the appearance of one.

Deceitful, Problematic, Or Benign? The Case For And Against The New Crying Makeup Trend https://www.suggest.com/crying-makeup-trend-pros-cons/2692920/ Tue, 29 Nov 2022 23:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2692920 Crying makeup trend demonstrated on social media

Bloodshot eyes, puffy lips, glistening cheeks—crying gives us a distinct look that, for most of us, would not be one we want to show off to the general public. But according to the wellspring of information that is TikTok, “crying makeup” is one of the latest, hottest makeup trends.

The name essentially speaks for itself; this makeup look is all about achieving that fresh-from-a-cry-sesh face. While straightforward in theory, the trend poses a few underlying concerns that are far more complex. Does this look romanticize poor mental health? Is it deceitful? Or is this all just one big overreaction?

We got our tissues and dove deeper into the issue, breaking down the origins of this trend and its possible benefits and pitfalls.

Breaking Down The Teary-Eyed Trend

“This one is for the unstable girlies,” began @ZoeKimKenealy on TikTok. “If you’re not in the mood to cry, here’s how to get the look with makeup.” Kenealy outlined how she achieved her perfectly pouty look, including puffy soft lips, pink eyes and cheeks, glistening lash lines, and wet Cupid’s bow.

@zoekimkenealy

♬ Show Me How (Album V) – Men I Trust

While this look is certainly distinct, it’s not quite as original as Gen Z might like to think. But we’ll forgive them, of course, because they also thought skorts were invented last year. However, we’ve seen this heavy-eyed look before.

Fiona Apple, Mazzy Star, and even nihilistic cartoons like Daria—these pop culture icons of the late ’90s made it cool to be crabby. This look, which i-D writer Rayne Fisher-Quann aptly dubbed the “dissociative pout,” has been around for decades.

Just think back to the exaggerated “sad” eyebrows of the 1920s or the dead-eyed gaze of 1960s couture. So what makes this so particularly concerning to some and empowering to others in 2022?

Performative Cosmetics?

As Kenealy explained to The Guardian, the reactions to this makeup trend have been divisive. While some commenters eagerly asked about products and shades to replicate the look, other spectators weren’t as impressed.

“People—mostly men—have been commenting ‘Amber Heard’ on my video,” Kenealy said. Those commenters are referring to a widespread belief, held mostly by Johnny Depp fans online, that his ex-wife, Amber Heard, was fake-crying on the stand about Depp’s alleged abuse. They, in turn, are accusing Kenealy of doing the same.

RELATED: How Amber Heard’s Demonization Amid Johnny Depp Trial Shows Toxicity Of Social Media Towards Women

Moreover, there’s the argument that makeup looks like these only serve to romanticize poor mental health. Dissociation, anxiety, and depression have all been co-opted by the greater online community as being trendy. “We’re all traumatized,” these trends seem to shout, “and you have to be, too, to fit in with us.”

Of course, that argument could be countered with the benefits of erasing stigma. By bringing these mental health topics into the collective zeitgeist, it can (ideally) be easier for those suffering from these issues to seek help. It provides a sense of community, turning the messaging into, “We’re all traumatized, and there’s nothing to be ashamed about.”

A Pushback On The Patriarchy?

Indeed, some writers are quick to point out that this type of communal acknowledgment is a fundamental pillar of these “emotional” makeup trends. Fredrika Thelandersson, author of 21st Century Media and Female Mental Health, studies online cultures and communities, particularly through the lens of the female experience.

Thelandersson argued that while the makeup might be performative, it’s still serving the purpose of connecting others through similar experiences. “That’s a sort of belonging,” she told The Guardian. “You can make fun of that as much as you want, but it’s still kind of hopeful in a way.”

And as stated earlier, this really isn’t a groundbreaking trend. It conjures up lyrics from Fiona Apple (“Me and everybody’s on the sad, same team, and you can hear our sad brains screaming”) and Garbage (“I’m only happy when it rains, pour your misery down on me”). And according to artist Audrey Wollen, a woman marinating in her own sadness can actually be a form of protest.

RELATED: No, You’re Not Hysterical: Why Women’s Anger Is Important And Necessary

Wollen, who coined the term “Sad Girl Theory,” argued to Nylon that “the sadness of girls should be witnessed and re-historicized as an act of resistance, of political protest … Girls’ sadness isn’t quiet, weak, shameful, or dumb: It is active, autonomous, and articulate. It’s a way of fighting back.”

It’s Your Party, You Can Cry If You Want To

While some might call this look performative, isn’t that all makeup to a degree? We use makeup to outwardly express our personalities and attitudes. We use white eyeliner and mascara to look (read: perform) like we’re more awake even if we’re dead tired.

@ecemcelenli Credit @zoekimkenealy 🥀 Crying Makeup aka Pretty when You Cry Makeup 🥲 #makeuptutorial #StemDrop001 #makeup #easymakeup #beginnermakeuptutorial ♬ Pretty When You Cry – Lana Del Rey

And if sadness is the attitude you want to lean into, then who’s to say you shouldn’t? All beauty trends, from simple no-makeup looks to full-on glam and everything in between, are superfluous in nature. We don’t need any of them, period. But we choose to use and wear what we like—and most of the time, those choices are cyclical and predictable.

And furthermore, in a society where women are vilified for showing negative emotions and constantly told to smile, leaning into the exact opposite is kind of punk rock. Misogynistic naysayers, the likes of whom compared Kenealy to Amber Heard, would likely find any reason to condemn their female counterparts. Crying makeup is just the latest object of derision.

To cry or not cry: That’s the million-dollar question. Whether you want to give a teary-eyed middle finger to the patriarchy or you like how you look rosy-nosed and glistening, the look seems harmless enough to us. Is it understandable? Er, kinda, though we won’t be rocking the look ourselves anytime soon.

Still, the trend is benign just the same. If you disagree, you could always cry about it.

After Two Autoimmune Diagnoses, One Woman Created A Mineral Makeup Line That Is Also Great For Menopausal Skin https://www.suggest.com/kari-gran-skincare-mineral-makeup-menopausal-skin/2691968/ Sat, 26 Nov 2022 20:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2691968 a model with a tooth gap wears red lipstick

Kari Gran was working as a real estate agent when she was diagnosed with two autoimmune disorders: Graves’ disease and Hashimoto’s. Suddenly, self-care became a part-time job.

Gran began experimenting with homegrown skincare formulations that her skin and body could tolerate. She dove deep into research on ingredients and came up with formulations that caught the interest of fellow real estate agent Lisa Strain, who convinced Gran to turn her creations into a business.

Gran and Strain launched the skincare and makeup company in 2011, and over the past 10 years have launched a variety of skincare and makeup products made from organic and naturally-derived ingredients, created for women experiencing skin changes associated with menopause.

With the holidays fast approaching, we’re particularly excited about Kari Gran’s makeup, offerings. Each product is free of dyes, synthetic fragrances, parabens, talc, and fillers, and is formulated with menopausal skin in mind.

One more reason to love Kari Gran products: she offers refills, which are packaged in 100% compostable packets.

Even better, Kari Gran is offering 15% off site-wide, plus a free Essential Mini Balm when you spend $65 or more through December 2. Here are a few of the Kari Gran products on our holiday wish list!

Formulated with organic sunflower oil, organic camellia oil, and organic beeswax, these lip whips make a perfect gift for yourself or a friend.

The ethos behind Kari Gran is keeping your skin healthy, not about turning back time or anti-aging. The Mineral Powder Foundation has only five ingredients and nine shades to choose from. It’s lightweight, buildable, and breathable, giving you the coverage you desire without caking. If you’re unsure of your shade, choose the Foundation Sample Kit. Pick from the light, medium, or dark collections or all shades and get credit toward a full-sized product.

Kari Gran calls the Peony Mineral Blush a universally flattering shade and customers seem to agree. Out of 86 reviews, 85 reviews were extremely positive. Even skeptics seemed to only have good things to say.

One reviewer wrote, “I have always been afraid of blush. This product changed that for me. While it looks hot pink in the container, it goes on looking natural, subtle, and beautiful. It just has a way of adding dimension and freshness without being obvious. I am a new fan!”

The blush is also formulated with just three ingredients, reducing the chance of irritation or allergic reactions.

Julia Roberts Is A Fan Of This Serum Foundation With Hyaluronic Acid That’s Perfect For Mature Skin https://www.suggest.com/julia-roberts-lancome-teint-idole/2689445/ Fri, 18 Nov 2022 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2689445 Close-up of Julia Roberts at the 2022 Academy Museum Gala

To achieve flawless-looking skin like Julia Roberts it helps to start off with fantastic genes, plenty of money, and professional makeup artists (MUAs) ready and willing to help. But Roberts typically likes to keep her looks simple—and we love her for that.

In a time when super-contoured faces seem to be the norm, Roberts’s fresh-faced style stands out from the crowd. And it helps that her MUA is a pro at emphasizing her features without overwhelming her face.

Roberts was recently honored with the Icon Award at the second annual Academy Museum Gala, celebrating her vast array of memorable roles (Erin Brockovich, Vivian Ward, and Anna Scott, just to name a few). She showed up and showed out in a Thom Browne black silk faille corset, wool drop waist trouser skirt, and oversized sack jacket with grosgrain tipping.

Her hair was slicked back in a low bun and she wore an understated makeup look along with minimal jewelry. Her elegant, sophisticated style certainly made her look the part of an icon while keeping the attention on her career achievements.

RELATED: Julia Roberts Credits This Instant Volumizing Spray For Giving Her Camera-Ready Confidence

We can’t help but notice how naturally radiant Roberts’s face looked. Her MUA, Genevieve Herr, used the Lancôme Teint Idole Foundation with Hyaluronic Acid to create a luminous, flawless base. Herr told Byrdie that the foundation was “the most important product for her look.”

Zendaya is also a fan of this foundation, which is formulated with an 82% hydrating serum base formula, including hyaluronic acid and mandelic acid. Together, these ingredients visibly plump, hydrate, and smooth the skin while providing a buildable medium coverage. What’s more, it’s available in a wide array of shades (with varying undertones!).

Herr also used the accompanying Teint Idole Concealer on the t-zone and to brighten the under-eye area. This concealer is obviously made to perfectly complement the foundation. It’s a lightweight, hydrating, long-lasting concealer that brightens and covers imperfections while imparting a matte finish.

The two products combined made for an immaculate base. Of course, Herr used plenty of other products to complete Roberts’s look for the evening, and in our opinion, the stand-out product was the Lancôme Teint Idole Foundation. Ultimately, Roberts’s final look was elegant, refined, and befitting of an icon.

Have A Double Lip Line? This Genius Lip Lining Trick Is A Complete Game Changer https://www.suggest.com/prominent-vermilion-border-lip-lining-tip/2685144/ Tue, 01 Nov 2022 20:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2685144 Woman applying red lipstick

There is no denying the power of the perfect lipstick shade to give you a serious mood boost. Whether you lean towards a fiery red, love bold purples and blues, or choose shades more au naturel, adding a bit of definition on the lips helps any makeup look feel complete.

Yet for some of us, applying lipstick and a corresponding lip liner can just feel off. While other women seem to get an envy-worthy pout, you might feel highlighting your lips somehow feels like “too much” on your face.

If that’s the case, you could be dealing with something called a “double lip line.”

A double lip line happens when you have a prominent vermilion border. This is the line just above the portion that connects the lip tissue to the rest of your face.

In effect, it looks like the border of your lip and the skin just above it are two separate lines. Think of celebs like Rihanna, Gigi Hadid, and SZA—they all have noticeable double lip lines.

RELATED: Here’s How To Find The Perfect Nude Lipstick No Matter Your Skin Tone

If you avoid lip liner altogether or place your lip liner on the vermilion border, the result can make your lips look larger and less contained. Luckily, TikTok creator @sola_victoria has the perfect tip.

“I’m going to basically line the inner perimeter of my lipline. By doing this on the inside, I’m less likely to make my lips look bigger because my lips are already full,” Śola said in her TikTok video, which has over 78K views.

So simple, yet the difference is quite noticeable!

In her video, Śola chose a neutral shade lip liner that is similar to her skin tone. In a note on the video, she detailed “using a liner color that is on your undertone range but deeper in a good start.”

Śola opted to use a NYX slim lip pencil, widely regarded among many makeup enthusiasts as a great, affordable liner that goes on smoothly and provides natural-looking definition.

To complete your look, simply fill in with your lipstick of choice. We’re personally big fans of Maybelline’s Super Stay Ink Crayon Lipstick, which one Suggest editor has ranked as her top long-lasting lipstick. Both smudge and transfer-resistant, the creamy matte crayon also comes in over 30 stunning shades.

If you don’t follow Śola, she is a great add. Her channel is full of helpful beauty videos, especially for beginners. Her tutorials are approachable and easy to follow, and she always provides great context (like her definition of a double lip line). We highly recommend!

4 Surprising Hacks This Over-50 Makeup Artist Wished She Knew Earlier  https://www.suggest.com/surprising-mature-skin-makeup-tips-over-50/2682894/ Wed, 19 Oct 2022 20:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2682894 A woman holding a mirror and makeup brush smiling

Just as our skin care regimen changes as we age, mature makeup application also presents unique challenges. We usually need more hydration for prep—so much more hydration.

But creating makeup-ready skin with moisturizer is only the beginning, as over-50 makeup artist Chelespell explained in a recent TikTok post. And she may have just cracked the code to flawless mature makeup application with these four makeup hacks. In fact, she says these tips are so brilliant, she wishes she had known them sooner.

1. Eye Shadow First

For your entire life you have probably been applying foundation and concealer first, followed by eye makeup. But Chele’s first tip flips the order. Applying eye makeup before foundation and concealer is actually more efficient, she said.

“You will not believe how much time this saves in case it trickles or falls and you have to redo it,” she explained. Instead of touching up the concealer and foundation you’ve already applied, you can simply wipe away any fallout without worrying about messing up the work you’ve already done.

2. Contour and Highlight Under Foundation

Contouring makeup usually comes after foundation and concealer. But if you’re aiming for a flawless, natural look, Chele said applying it before is better because contouring lines will blend more readily.

“You will find that it will go on more smoothly and look more natural,” Chele assures.

3. Foundation Only Where Needed

Chele emphasized that less is more when it comes to foundation for mature skin. The goal, she said, is to only apply it where you truly need it.

“Do not feel that foundation needs to go on the full face,” she explains. “The foundation should match the skin enough that you can apply just enough to where it’s needed and blend well.”

4. Translucent Powder Under And Over Bronzer And Blush

Her last tip might be the most surprising: Post-foundation, Chele recommended setting your face with a translucent powder before reaching for any color, like blush or bronzer—as long as it’s not liquid.

“This way the color will not catch on the skin and go on smoothly, and once you put on your bronzer and blush you can actually set again with your translucent powder. Everything will stay on very well,” she said.

So there you have it, four quick hacks for more efficient and natural-looking mature-skin makeup—follow Chelespell for more where that came from.

Your Makeup Application Technique Could Be Making Your Skin Look Worse (And Wasting Product) https://www.suggest.com/makeup-application-technique-over-40/2679684/ Wed, 05 Oct 2022 20:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2679684 A makeup brush with pink powder blush

When you are in your 40s and 50s and your body is going through perimenopause and menopause, you’ll probably notice some changes to your aging skin. And when that happens, it’s time to change up your makeup and your makeup techniques.

Mature skin makeup expert Colette Vanpaemel is an influencer known as @RealMatureColette on Instagram, and she’s all about offering “simple makeup tips for women over 40.” In a recent post, she drops a game changer, sharing her method for applying makeup on mature skin.

RELATED: This Genius Eyeliner Trick For Women Over 40 Is Not Only Stunning, But It Requires Zero Eyeliner

“Mature skin requires not only different makeup but different application techniques!” Colette says in the caption. “Cream makeup and the tapping/stippling method make the entire difference! Until I began using this makeup and this method, I hated my makeup! This is a game changer!”

In the short video clip, Colette demonstrates the one thing you can do to get a better finish on your makeup application.

“Stop swiping your makeup on, and start tapping,” she says in the reel.

As she explains, you will lose a lot more makeup when you swipe it on with a brush instead of tapping it on the exact spot you want it to go. Tapping is more precise, and as Colette points out, when you use the swipe method your makeup will look patchier and give you less coverage.

“Tapping it exactly in the places you want it and really pressing it into your skin, you are going to get better coverage using less product. And, it’s going to give you a much more natural finish,” Colette says.

The method isn’t just for foundation—it applies to all of your makeup including contour, blending, and applying lip color. Colette notes that you should especially use this technique when you are concealing under your eyes.

To get started with the pressing and tapping method, check out this complete set of [amazon-link id=”2680109″]professional corn silk fiber brushes[/affiliate-link] that fit any budget.

Or, try this pretty, pink, five-piece brush set, which includes brushes for foundation, concealer, blush, and eyeshadow, plus a miracle sponge blender.

And of course, don’t forget to tell Colette what you think of her genius method. You’ve gotta show love to someone who helps you look better and keeps you from wasting valuable makeup!

I Found The Perfect Long-Lasting Lipstick, So You Didn’t Have To https://www.suggest.com/maybelline-london-superstay-ink-crayon-review/2677608/ Mon, 26 Sep 2022 20:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2677608 Woman with Maybelline Superstay Ink Crayon on lips, picture of product beside face

I’ve been searching for the Goldilocks of lipsticks for years, and I think I finally found it. My perfect lipstick is not too sheer, but not too bold; not easily wiped off, but not crusty and drying; affordable, but not plastic-tasting or irritating to my skin.

I have a slightly embarrassingly large arsenal of once-used lipsticks that didn’t pass my test. But finally, I think I finally found the unicorn lippy I was searching for. And because I know the dull pain of endless scrolling, review reading, and wasting money, I’m sharing it with you.

Oh, and did I mention you can buy it at your local drugstore? You’re welcome.

What I Thought Was The Perfect Lipstick

Prior to finding my new go-to lipstick, I was Team Maybelline Superstay Liquid Lipstickall the way. I loved (and sometimes hated) that the lipstick could last through almost anything—eating, drinking, even sleeping. Once you put this lipstick on, it was on for the rest of the night and the next morning, too.

However, its super-stay power made it difficult to fix mistakes when I was applying or touching up on the go. Removing the lipstick altogether required either a “lipstick eraser,” makeup wipe, or peeling off the top layer of your lips with a wet paper towel.

I also wasn’t crazy about how I couldn’t make a natural edge around my lips with this lipstick. The liquid formula made a crisp, bold line, which is great for some folks, but not my style. I prefer my lipsticks to look like a stain—slightly less harsh around the edges but just as pigmented.

RELATED: This Method For Applying Bronzer Will Blow Your Mind Especially If You’re Over 50

If you’re looking for intense durability and function over comfort, then I can’t recommend Maybelline Superstay Liquid enough. I’ve told countless friends (and strangers) about it over the years. But if you want to be comfortable and have greater application control, this liquid lip just isn’t it.

The Actual Perfect Lipstick

A few weeks ago, I decided I was fed up with my lips somehow feeling sticky and dry simultaneously. So, I went back to the drugstore to start a new search. While there, I found Maybelline’s Super Stay Ink Crayon close to my old go-to lipstick. I knew the brand, its formulas, and its colors well, so I figured I’d start there.

And that’s where my search ended. While I was hesitant about the staying power of solid lipstick as opposed to liquid, this Super Stay product lived up to its name. I’ve worn it while eating, drinking, and sleeping, and it holds up about as well as its liquid counterpart.

Except with this formula, there’s no crusty, dry feeling halfway through the day. I can layer coverage for either a sheer or bold look without sacrificing its staying power. The lipstick glides on smooth and doesn’t have a noticeable taste or smell. And as a bonus that maybe only benefits packrats like myself, the smaller bottle takes up less space in my purse and pockets.

I did notice the Super Stay Ink Crayon will rub off on the inside of my lips—the part that’s revealed only when you make an exaggerated kissy face—if I’ve been drinking without a straw or licking my lips frequently. But frankly, the same thing happened with my liquid lip, except that one was far less comfortable to wear all day.

(M. Davis-McAfee)

I’ve tried designer brands, Amazon impulse buys, and countless drugstore brands in search of the right lipstick. And so far, the Maybelline Super Stay Ink Crayon ticks all the boxes: buildable color, smooth feel, matte finish, and most importantly, the type of long-lasting formula that makes you feel like you can actually live in your lipstick.

Is there a better option out there that I haven’t tried yet? Maybe. But with 34 shades, a super affordable price point, and these results, I feel confident saying this is the holy grail of long-lasting drugstore lipsticks (for now).

This Genius Eyeliner Trick For Women Over 40 Is Not Only Stunning, But It Requires Zero Eyeliner https://www.suggest.com/over-40-eyeliner-trick/2674835/ Thu, 22 Sep 2022 20:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2674835 middle aged woman with short platinum hair and smokey eye makeup

Our faces change as we age, and sometimes we need to adapt our makeup products and techniques. In particular, our eyeliner look from the ’90s might not deliver the results it once did.

The good news is, you don’t have to use eyeliner at all to get a stunning look even with crow’s feet and textured skin. Courtney Spencer, aka “your makeup friend and application coach,” has developed a super-versatile, mess-free eyeliner method that delivers a soft, smokey look using zero eyeliner.

Her brand is all about makeup and hair after 40. She teaches women “how to look and feel beautiful while simplifying their makeup routine.”

“We all know that one of the very first places we start to show our age is in our eyes, so let’s not emphasize that,” Spencer said. And as luck would have it, the method is super easy.

How-To Easy No-Eyeliner Eyeliner

  • Step One: “Let’s grab a nice matte eyeshadow color, and apply that on the top and bottom lash line,” Spencer said.
  • Step Two: “Take the fluffy end of your eyeshadow brush and just soften it out.”

That’s it! The method gives that definition you want from eyeliner, without the harsh line that can emphasize lines and make eyes look smaller.

RELATED: I Tried The Kate Walsh-Approved Crepe Erase Skin Line: Here’s What I Think

We were sold on this idea, so the first thing we did was find the right products and tools. First up is the matte eye shadow, which can be in whatever color you prefer. We really like this palette from Japonesque because it’s matte (not shimmery), and it has eight eyeshadow pigments that range from light to dark.

As for the blending brush to soften the eyeshadow, this dual-ended brush from JOAH is a good choice.

Or, the game-changing IT Cosmetics Superhero 4-in-1 Brush will do the trick, plus so much more.

If eye makeup techniques are a challenge because you can’t wear your glasses while doing them, Spencer recommends using a magnifying mirror like this one from Venice.

By making a small difference to your makeup routine, you’ll get a more youthful look and the perfect eyeliner. And that’s a deal we absolutely love!

This Method For Applying Bronzer Will Blow Your Mind Especially If You’re Over 50 https://www.suggest.com/gucci-westman-bronzer-technique/2670611/ Mon, 29 Aug 2022 21:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2670611 Makeup brush with bronzer

Makeup artist Gucci Westman is a genius when it comes to natural-looking makeup for women over 40. She’s worked with Drew Barrymore, Natalie Portman, and Halle Berry just to name a few of her celebrity clients.

Her career in the industry spans decades, starting in the ‘90s when she worked with director Spike Jonze. Westman went on to become International Artistic Director for Lancôme in 2003. Later she became the Global Artistic Director for Revlon until 2015.

She launched her own line of cosmetics, Westman Atelier, in 2018. Her brand uses clean ingredients, is cruelty-free, and is transparent about its learning process. The brand even meets the EU’s rigorous standards for clean beauty products.

So we definitely trust her judgment and technical skill. Her taste is impeccable, her products are luxurious, and she’s perfected the no-makeup makeup look.

Westman often takes to Instagram to give tutorials about new products from her cosmetic line. But when she posted her bronzer technique on Instagram we were more than a little surprised.

You Want Me To Put Bronzer Where?

In the video, she applies her Westman Atelier Beauty Butter Bronzer to her forehead first. She states that she uses a horizontal motion when applying the bronzer to make it look “more authentic” and to mimic how the sun would naturally kiss (aka damage) the skin.

So far everything seems normal. But next, she takes the bronzer and applies it underneath her eyes. Ya know, normally where one would put concealer. Given that many of us are actively trying to conceal bags and undereye circles, this seems counterintuitive.

Westman addressed in the comments saying this is her “favorite trick” and “makes you look naturally sun-kissed.” And given the final results, no argument there.

To finish her application, Westman applies a little down the bridge of her nose, over her eyelids, and around the corner of her eyes to connect the temple and cheek together.

While she does apply the bronzer in quite a few spots on her face, Westman makes note that she doesn’t apply any under the bottom of her cheekbones. That said, she does recommend applying a little to your neck and collarbones if they’re showing, too.

The result is subtle, very natural-looking, and undeniably beautiful. It’s also a refreshing take on bronzer compared to the heavily contoured looks that dominate Instagram and TikTok. Additionally, this technique is perfect for those with mature skin as the delicate application gives a natural glow without any harsh lines.

So what do you think? Would you try this technique?

After MS Diagnosis, Selma Blair Shares The Adaptive Beauty Tools She Uses To Help Feel Like Herself Again https://www.suggest.com/selma-blair-guide-beauty/2670142/ Sun, 28 Aug 2022 21:35:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2670142 Selma Blair demonstrating how to use the Glide Eyeliner Duo

The world is designed for “able-bodied” people. Those with disabilities or different abilities are many times just left to fend for themselves. While accessibility in all facets of life is important, many times personal care items and beauty products are left out of the conversation. But people with disabilities deserve to be included and invited to the table.

And able-bodied people often take for granted their abilities. I mean, we can use makeup tools without modification, our clothes don’t need specialized hooks, and we certainly don’t need assistive technology to communicate with others.

But others do, and more people should be talking about it and doing something to help make a difference. So when actress Selma Blair realized that her “taking things for granted” days were over, she decided to take matters into her own hands—she became the CCO of a company that designs accessible beauty products.

Creating A Solution Where There Wasn’t One

Actress and disability advocate Selma Blair was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2018. Before her diagnosis, she knew something wasn’t right. She experienced unexplained pain, muscle spasms, fatigue, and mood swings. The turning point came when she experienced numbness in her leg while walking a runway show in New York.

Multiple Sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms of the disease can vary, but numbness, tremors, impaired vision, and fatigue are among the laundry list of symptoms.

The Cruel Intentions star has always been a lover of all things beauty and fashion. So, when her disease progressed to the point that applying makeup became difficult, she at first accepted it as her new normal.

“After I had treatment, I’d honestly, like, stopped looking in the mirror,” Blair told InStyle. “My hair was short, I was bloated, I had alopecia on my lashes and my face. And it was all so much effort—I sometimes don’t see well—so I just stopped, and I didn’t think I missed it.”

But after she found Guide Beauty, things began to change. “It was a real turning point for me. It was like, ‘OK, let’s start waking up again.'”

Leading The Way In Accessible Beauty

Guide Beauty was founded by Terri Bryant, a celebrity makeup artist and beauty educator. Byrant also suffers from a disease that limits her dexterity making it difficult to apply makeup.

While Bryant was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, like Blair, she was a lifelong lover of makeup and beauty products. The two women joined forces with Blair as the Chief Creative Officer to help make the beauty realm more accessible and inclusive. The ergonomic designs Guide Beauty’s makeup tools coupled with beautiful makeup palates are making a difference in the lives of many.

RELATED: ‘This Is Bullsh*t:’ These Midlife Women Were Fed Up With Night Sweats, So They Created A Cooling PJ Line That Can Be Worn Anytime

Their hero product, the Guide Eyeliner Duo makes putting on eyeliner much easier. It has a curved, soft precision tip, an open window for visibility, and even a built-in finger rest to help easily guide application.

The Lash Wrap mascara wand has a guide ring to help steady the applicator. And Blair’s favorite, the Brow Moment, fills, shapes, and sets your brows with a comfortable-grip applicator. “That is something I can literally put on without looking,” she told InStyle. “It’s really kind of a saving grace for me because I feel much better, and my face just comes alive.”

While Guide Beauty had those with disabilities in mind when they began, the ergonomic designs help make applying makeup easier for everyone. Accessibility and inclusion are necessary. From all people seeing themselves represented in the media to building inclusive infrastructure to finding joy in expression through makeup, it’s all important.

We are glad that Blair and Guide Beauty are creating innovative solutions and leading the way in the beauty world.

Your Apple Can Fall From The Tree–How To Tweak Your Makeup Application After 40 For A Changing Face https://www.suggest.com/how-to-tweak-makeup-application-after-40/2668187/ Mon, 15 Aug 2022 22:25:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2668187 A woman applying makeup in the mirror.

Our appearance changes as we get older. Skin loses some of its collagen and elasticity. Wrinkles appear where there used to be none, and even our facial muscles start to weaken. This can all translate to makeup not looking as great on our skin as it used to.

While updating what products we use can make a big difference, it turns out application methods are just as important to tweak as we age. We do get it, though. Sometimes we stick with what we know about makeup because it’s how we learned. But, we can always learn new things, and luckily we have a guide to help us.

Recently Erica Taylor (@ericataylor2347) made a reel about the “Dos and Don’ts” of makeup application for those over 40, and she may very well be on to something.

Contouring An Over 40 Face

Taylor starts the reel by using a contouring example. In her “don’t” application she applies the contour stick underneath her cheekbone. In the “do” application she applies it on top of her cheekbone. She blends it out and then pointing to the correct application says, “lifted,” and then “hollowed,” while pointing to the other side. And you can see a difference between the two sides.

Later in the video, Taylor contours her nose. In her “don’t” application she applies the contour too wide, making her nose look larger. Next, she demonstrates applying the contour closer together to give the impression of a more narrow bridge.

RELATED: Yes, You Can Give Yourself A Facelift Just By Using Makeup

Lastly, when it comes to the jawline, Taylor advises avoiding a harsh line when applying bronzer. Instead, a gentle application will result in a more “feminine” appearance.

Blush Application

Transitioning from a powder blush to a cream blush is recommended for aging skin. In the “don’t” application, Taylor smiles and puts her blush on the “apples” of her cheeks, like we’ve all been taught to do. Then, she demonstrates on the other side of her face, the “do” technique. She applies the cream blush higher on the apple of her cheek, giving it a more lifted look. Pointing to the “don’t” side she notes, “Your apple can fall from your tree.”

Lip Liner

Using Trish McEvoy Barely There lipliner, Taylor then demonstrates the correct and incorrect way to line your lips. She says lining your lips all the way around can give the appearance of a downturned mouth. However, she has a fix. Line the top of your lip normally, but then, when you line the bottom lip, stop before you reach the corner of your mouth. This will give the appearance of a “happier, more youthful” look.

It can be hard to break old habits, but learning new tricks is definitely worth it! Thank god for the Erica Taylor’s of the world who will help walk us through it.

Say It Ain’t So: Dr. Pepper Lip Smacker Is Discontinued After Nearly 50 Years https://www.suggest.com/dr-pepper-lip-smacker-is-discontinued-after-nearly-50-years/2667187/ Thu, 04 Aug 2022 23:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2667187 Lip Smacker's Dr. Pepper lip balm.

While we’re all still reeling from the fact that the Choco Taco has been discontinued, the hits just keep on coming. Yup, you read the headline correctly, the Dr. Pepper Lip Smacker from our youth has been pulled off the shelves.

But, with everything going on in the world, did you even notice? Because, according to an in-depth article from Allure, it was actually discontinued in 2020. While the world was going through several major events, Dr. Pepper Lip Smacker was quietly removed from the shelves.

A Short And Sweet History

But why would they take away such an iconic staple from our youth?! I mean, you remember the days of wearing your Dr. Pepper Lip Smacker, slap bracelet, and candy necklaces, right? It was the height of fashion.

It is surprising with the re-emergence of several ’90s trends, Dr. Pepper Lip Smackers would be discontinued. I mean, we felt super grown up with our shiny lipgloss, which still had the fun and flavor of our favorite soda. But, it wasn’t too much, just a hint of color so our parents didn’t mind. Teens today might feel somewhat differently with their makeup tutorials, though.

However, the reason Dr. Pepper Lip Smackers was discontinued isn’t super interesting. The partnership between the brands began in 1975. In 1973 Lip Smacker came out with some classic flavors- Green Apple, Strawberry, and Lemon. But in 1975, Dr. Pepper Lip Smacker became all the rage. It continued its popularity throughout the ’80s and ’90s. And if you type in “Dr. Pepper Lip Smackers” into TikTok today, you’ll find several videos dedicated to bringing it back. However, the contract between the brands expired in 2020, and the partnership did not continue.

The original brand (Bonne Bell) closed its doors in 2015 and sold Lip Smacker to Markwin’s Beauty Brand, the parent company of Wet n Wild and Physician’s Formula. But, Dr. Pepper did end up partnering with another company- Taste Beauty. While the formula is different, there’s at least an option for some of the nostalgic lip gloss. If you want that Lip Smacker shine though, it’s best to stick with one of the classic Lip Smackers. The Lip Smacker Coca-Cola Lip Balm Party Pack, Lip Smacker Piece Skittles Balm, and Lip Smacker Piece M&M Balm are all still available for purchase. Who knows what’s next in line to be discontinued? Might as well stock up while you still can!

The makeup does well to not show up flaky, cakey, or settle in fine lines or wrinkles. Additionally, it diminishes dark circles, redness, uneven skin tone, and hyperpigmentation, as well as firming, lifting, and plumping the skin. Talk about a true multitasker!

Although the 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup Powder Foundation is the holy grail of summer beauty, you can enhance it with other products in their 4-in1 line.

An Easy, Less-Than-10-Minute Natural Makeup Routine For Over 50 (Yes, I Timed It) https://www.suggest.com/easy-under-ten-minute-natural-makeup-routine-over-50/2676431/ Tue, 28 Jun 2022 20:52:14 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/the-easiest-less-than-10-minute-i-timed-it-routine-for-a-no-makeup-makeup-look-over-50/2676431/ Left: natural makeup on middle-aged woman; right: timer that reads 8 minutes and 42 seconds

For the past few years, I’ve been trying new products in my ongoing quest to discover clean makeup that works with my over-50 combination skin. As a formerly acne-prone person, I’m still getting used to not being afraid of moisturizers and surprising myself with my newfound love of a dewy finish.

Until my mid-40s, I banished anything remotely shiny from my arsenal. My younger self would have called it greasy. But these days, I shock myself by adoring serums that leave a glowy finish.

Any makeup I use also needs to be easy with a capital “E.” Midlifers, myself at the top of the list, do not have time for complicated routines. (That’s why I was so excited about our super easy smokey eye tutorial for over-50-somethings. Still, I’m not interested in rocking even a simple smokey eye for a daily daytime look.)

For everyday wear for work, running errands, and the occasional brunch date, I’m interested in a minimal, natural look that, most importantly, takes less than ten minutes. And finally, I’ve cracked it! I even timed it: 8 minutes and 42 seconds.

Here are the products I currently use on the daily, plus the step-by-step, simple process for when I want to look awake and (slightly more) put together.

1. Foundation(ish)

Ilia’s Super Serum Skin Tint has become an all-time favorite of mine. It’s not cheap, but I’m willing to splurge because it’s like a million products in one. It not only provides the perfect amount of coverage (I’m not a fan of heavy foundation, so if you’re looking for that, this might not be for you). But it’s also a sunscreen that shields skin from UVA, UVB, UVC, blue light, and pollution.

Additionally, it contains hyaluronic acid, plant-based squalane, and niacinamide. It improves your skin, which means you’ll likely need the product less the more you wear it. The skin tint also seals in hydration, plumps the skin, and boosts antioxidant efficacy by 200 percent. Plus, it’s silicone-, fragrance-, chemical screen-, and oil-free, non-comedogenic, and safe for sensitive skin.

I’ve seen people on social media use just a few drops. But I find that to even out my skin tone and ensure that sun protection, I need six to eight drops. I put it everywhere, even on my neck and eyelids. Maybe I’m overdoing it, but honestly, I love how it looks, and I’m okay with that.

RELATED: Your Makeup Application Technique Could Be Making Your Skin Look Worse (And Wasting Product)

2. Getting Lippy

I’m super late to the game on this one—Pillow Talk was a social media phenomenon a few years back. But tardiness aside, this product is absolutely amazing. This particular shade is seriously plumifying for my skin tone. It comes in 16 other shades, so you’re sure to find one that works for you as well. The application is also silky smooth. It doesn’t bleed into the lines around my lips, and it lasts a long time. I just love it, period.

3. Lips, Cheeks, And Eyes (Oh, My)

Where do I begin with Ilia’s Color Haze pigment? To put it simply, I have fallen in love with this multi-use wonder. The instructions indicate that it’s for lips and cheeks, but I also use it on my eyes. (Full disclosure, I didn’t do that for the featured image for this article. So, add 15 seconds for that step.)

This product stays pretty dewy on the cheeks, and I find that it blends quite well with the Super Serum. It tends to dry more matte on the lips. And for lips specifically, I love the “Before Today” shade, pictured above. (It comes in four others, so there’s something for everyone.)

4. Best Brows

I’ve tried a lot (and I mean a LOT) of brow pencils, and the NYX Micro Brow Pencil is the current reigning champ. I’m into the color, the super slim pencil, and the handy attached brush. It goes on easily, and it stays on until I take it off.

Surprisingly, this find was a drugstore purchase that I bought on a whim while traveling when I’d forgotten my brow pencil. I was in a rush and not focusing on clean ingredients as much as I normally would, but I was pleased to discover later that NYX is a cruelty-free brand that is continually working to increase its vegan offerings.

RELATED: Struggling With Thinning Brows And Eyelashes? This Clinically Proven Growth Serum Provides Results In Just 4 Weeks

5. Conceal And Reveal

Kosas’ Revealer Concealer is another favorite product of mine that’s not just makeup; it’s also a skin treatment. It contains caffeine and pink algae to brighten, arnica and pro-vitamin B5 to soothe, and peptides and hyaluronic acid to plump.

I use it under my eyes and around my nose and mouth to camouflage dark and red patches. What I love most about it is it doesn’t settle into creases and blends perfectly with my Ilia Super Serum. My only complaint is I love using it so much that it tends to run out before I’m comfortable throwing down another $28.

6. Totally Tubular

I discovered caliray and its Come Hell or High Water Volumizing Mascara while researching another story about tubing mascaras. I loved the beachy branding (I’m a sucker for cool labels). But I was really sold when I discovered that caliray was founded by Urban Decay’s founding partner Wende Zomnir and is committed to clean ingredients and eco-conscious practices.

The vial is made of 100% recycled ocean plastic, and that pretty branding is painted on with low-impact inks. The box is 100% post-consumer recycled paper. Now that I’ve been using it for a few months, I can report that the tubing technology makes this mascara more waterproof than anything I’ve used. Plus, removing it never creates raccoon eyes. It comes off in tiny pieces that are easy to wipe away. I’m a total convert and will never, ever go back to regular mascara.

So, there you have it: an easy, under-ten-minute natural makeup routine. Do you think you can beat my time?

Inside The Intense But At Times Genius Beauty Routine Of Elizabeth Taylor https://www.suggest.com/intense-beauty-routine-of-elizabeth-taylor/2638999/ Thu, 19 May 2022 10:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2638999 Modeling photo of Elizabeth Taylor circa 1950s with shoulder length hair and bright red lipstick.

Dame Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor DBE, or Liz Taylor, as we knew her, is a classic Hollywood beauty icon. She was also an award-winning actress, AIDS activist, fine art collector, animal lover, and jewelry enthusiast.

Taylor had her own brand of fragrances before it was really even a thing, paving the way for other entrepreneurial celebrities to start their own fragrance and beauty lines. She was smart with her business deals and acting roles. I mean, she was even the first actress to negotiate a pay rate of a million dollars when she played Cleopatra in the 1963 film of the same name.

Taylor was a natural beauty and although she didn’t need a ton of help in that department, she did have a rather particular beauty routine. Here are some of her more interesting habits.

1. She’d Spend Up To A Half Hour Doing Her Lips

There is no denying Elizabeth Taylor’s love of makeup. In fact, according to her personal assistant Tim Mendelson, Taylor would spend up to an hour and a half on her eyes and a half hour on her lips just for the fun of it.

In fact, Taylor was prone to doing her own makeup and skincare for most occasions, from red carpet events to photo shoots. As Mendelson noted to The Hollywood Reporter, the process was a soothing ritual for Taylor, especially in the wake of big award shows like the Oscars.

2. She Took Hot Baths To ‘Set’ Her Makeup

While steam facials have become much more popular in recent times, Taylor was truly ahead of her time with her post-makeup baths. The steam from the hot water helped to blend her foundation and powder, creating a lovely dewy complexion.

It is reported that Taylor was also a fan of sheer foundations that would let her freckles show and never used contour or highlighter. The actress opted to go for a more natural look for her face while playing up her favorite features.

3. She Didn’t Need False Lashes Due To Her Unique Eyes

Even without makeup, Taylor’s captivating violet eyes were played up by a genetic abnormality called distichiasis. This rare genetic disorder causes another set of lashes to grow alongside the first. How one could be so lucky? We’re unsure.

As a result, Taylor only needed a little bit of mascara to accentuate her natural assets.

4. Those Iconic Brows Were Achieved Without Makeup

Elizabeth Taylor’s brows were always a huge aspect of her look. So much so that many people began to speculate she had a procedure done to permanently fill them in. Yet it turns out it may have just been her interesting choice of brow filler that gave them larger-than-life status.

According to her longtime makeup artist Francesca Tolot, “she used an eyebrow pencil that was actually a drawing pencil, it wasn’t makeup. It was a special charcoal pencil from Germany.”

5. Conditioner On Her Hair Was A No-No

When it came to hair, Elizabeth Taylor definitely fell in the camp of “bigger is better.” As such, Mendelson reported that Taylor’s hairstylist José Eber would be instructed to wash but not condition her hair in order to maximize volume.

In order to achieve her signature blowout bobs or elaborate updos, Taylor relied on hair rollers and a meticulous process of blowdrying each section one at a time.

While the process was tedious, the results speak for themselves, just like all of Dame Elizabeth’s unique beauty habits.

Avoiding Cakey Foundation Has Nothing To Do With Your Makeup, According To This Dermatologist https://www.suggest.com/derm-shares-how-to-avoid-cakey-makeup/2639047/ Wed, 18 May 2022 23:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2639047 Close up of woman's face, the left side demonstrating smooth, dewy makeup while the right side shows cakey foundation.

Does your foundation look cakey? If so, dermatologist Dr. Azadeh Shirazi—aka @skinbydrazi on TikTok—has a solution. And, it has nothing to do with your makeup.

This Doctor Knows Her Stuff

Shirazi is a board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon who practices at the La Jolla Dermatology & Laser Surgery Center in Southern California. She’s been called “the most skilled dermatologist” that La Jolla has to offer, and she definitely knows her stuff.

With 114K followers on Instagram, a YouTube channel with almost 50K subs, and 1.7 million followers on TikTok, Shirazi is quite the influencer when it comes to skincare and aesthetics. And she really got her fans talking when she posted her latest video.

How To Avoid Cakey Foundation

Shirazi recently asked her TikTok followers if their foundation looks cakey. Then, the dermatologist gave a quick step-by-step tutorial showing how to avoid it.

  1. Mist the skin with thermal spring water.
  2. Apply hyaluronic acid to damp skin.
  3. Apply foundation.
  4. Blot excess foundation with a tissue-covered beauty blender.

Let’s Break It Down

To get “that no makeup, makeup look,” Shirazi says to start by misting your skin with thermal spring water like Avéne Eau Thermale. This calming facial mist spray soothes and softens your skin while helping minimize sensitivity. As an added bonus, it provides antioxidant protection.

Eau Thermale Avene Thermal Spring Water Soothing Facial Mist

$18.50 Shop Now at Amazon
  • Helps reduce sensitivity, restore skin balance & doesn’t dry out skin.
  • Softens & calms sensitive skin; helps reduce visible redness & burning sensations.

The next step in the process is to apply hyaluronic acid to dampen the skin, which Shirazi says is the key to this whole process.

She recommends L’oreal Paris Hyaluronic Acid Serum because of its formulation. The doc praised this particular product because of these features:

  • Multi-molecular weight.
  • Oil- and fragrance-free.
  • Fast absorbing.

She explained that if the formulation isn’t right in your hyaluronic acid, then it will dry out your skin. Shirazi also noted that L’oreal has the added bonus of combining its hyaluronic acid with panthenol, which supports the skin barrier and provides long-lasting hydration.

It’s Just That Easy

The application of thermal spring water mist and the right hyaluronic acid before you put on your foundation is all you need to avoid the dreaded cakey look. These simple steps will make a huge difference, and these products won’t bust your budget.

If you are worried about trying this method because you have a skin condition like rosacea or eczema, Shirazi says not to worry. The L’oreal Paris Hyaluronic Acid Serum is fragrance-free and gentle, so it won’t irritate your skin.

If your skin is very dry, she recommends sealing it with a moisturizer. One to check out is Amazon’s #1 seller—Neutrogena Hydro Boost.

Princess Diana’s Top Beauty Products You Can Still Buy Today https://www.suggest.com/princess-dianas-top-beauty-products-you-can-still-buy-today/2636546/ Sat, 07 May 2022 20:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2636546 The Princess of Wales visits the to Chelmsford College, 6th September 1989; she wears a Catherine Walker suit.

The late Diana Princess of Wales was only 36 years old when she passed. In her short life, she did so much humanitarian and charity work. She concentrated her efforts on issues related to the homeless, the disabled, and those affected by HIV/AIDs.

She was even president of over 100 charities during her marriage to Prince Charles. She’s remembered as a great mother, humanitarian, and person. However, there is no denying that she was also a beauty and style icon.

And, with the ’80s and ‘90s styles coming back into the scene, there’s no surprise that Princess Diana’s style is making a comeback too. She looked her best with a fresh face and her preppy, elevated-casual style. But her elegant makeup and bold red nails in that iconic revenge LBD, along with other glamourous looks, had us in love too.

Honestly, Diana had a way to make everything look fashionable. Her beauty (inside and out) has stood the test of time, and part of that was thanks to her favorite skincare and makeup items. Although some of her go-to beauty products are not available anymore, there are a few favorites still on the market today.

1. Clarins Cleansing Milk With Alpine Herbs

Clarins Cleansing Milk.
(Clarins)

Princess Diana’s skin was sensitive and she sometimes suffered from rosacea according to reports. Her go-to brand for skincare was Clarins. She reportedly used their Cleansing Milk with Alpine Herbs to keep her skin clean and feeling soft. The Parisian product is great for all skin types. She also reportedly used Clarins Multi-Active Day Cream, toner, and moisturizer on a regular basis to keep her fair complexion supple and glowing.

2. By Terry Baume de Rose Lip Balm

By Terry Baume de Rose
(By Terry)

Throughout the ’80s and ’90s, styles evolved and Princess Diana’s look changed quite a bit. One thing that remained constant, though, was her use of By Terry Lip Balm, according to her former makeup artist. This nourishing lip balm with subtle hints of rose made Princess Diana’s pout soft and hydrated. The luxurious lip balm is also a favorite of actress Brooke Sheilds.

3. Clarins Foundation

Clarins Skin Illusion Foundation.
(Clarins)

Not surprisingly, Princess Di’s love of Clarins spilled over to their makeup line. In particular, it has been reported their Satin Finish Foundation was her favorite go-to. While this particular version has since been discontinued, Clarins Skin Illusion is a close replica. The moisturizing formula is lightweight, creating a radiant sheer finish that looks and feels like your wearing no makeup at all.

4. Lancôme Hypnôse Volumizing Mascara

Lancôme Hypnôse Volumizing Mascara
(Lancôme)

Lancôme Hypnôse Volumizing Mascara lifts your lashes without clumping or the dreaded flaking. It’s buildable, so you can go light for a daytime event or dramatic for a date night. Princess Diana’s makeup artist used the equivalent of this mascara at the time, and the duchess was hardly ever photographed without it and her signature blue eyeliner.

5. Tom Ford Brow Sculptor

Tom Ford Brow Sculptor.
(Tom Ford)

Because of Diana’s fair complexion and blonde brows, she used a brow sculptor to ensure her eyebrows were on-point. The featherlike strokes created by the Tom Ford Brow Sculptor help to provide shape and fill in sparse spots, so it’s no wonder it was a favorite of the late princess.

6. Red Nail Polish

butter|LONDON Her Majesty's Red Nail Lacquer
(butter|LONDON)

Breaking with royal protocol (the Queen apparently prefers light pink polishes), Princess Diana was impartial to painting her nails bright red. Although we don’t know what brand she actually wore, we’re a fan of the quality and longevity of butter|LONDON lacquer, particularly in the shade Her Majesty’s Red. The chip and fade-resistant polish doubles as a nail strengthener, revealing healthy nails every time you take it off.

7. Sebastian Hair Products

Sebastian Craft Clay
(Sebastian)

Princess Diana’s haircut was ridiculed and copied by millions. Even as recent as 2022, Princess Diana’s haircut was mentioned in a popular television drama. In a recent episode of This Is Us, ’80s Rebecca chops off her long mane in the page-boy style to emulate the popular princess of the time.

To get the signature bouncy coif, using the right products was crucial. While it is reported she was a fan of Sebastian Molding Mud (which is currently unavailable), their Craft Clay Matte Texturizer is a close match. The non-sticky formula offers some serious volume and texture without looking greasy or dull.

If You’re Over 50, This Is The Easiest Smokey Eye You Can Create In 5 Minutes Flat https://www.suggest.com/over-50-smokey-eye-tutorial/2676437/ Tue, 03 May 2022 11:00:36 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/if-youre-over-50-this-is-the-easiest-smokey-eye-you-can-create-in-5-minutes-flat/2676437/ Woman applying eye makeup

A smokey eye makeup look is the epitome of cool, and being a Gen Xer, I guess it makes sense that I feel that way. Many of my heroes rocked a smokey eye in the ’80s and ’90s: Kim Gordon, Carine Roitfeld, Joan Jett, Shirley Manson, Siouxie Sioux; the list is long and grungy.

Sadly, in all of my 53 years, I have never figured out how to create a smokey eye myself. Not that I tried—it seemed so intimidating, requiring multiple colors, brushes, and mysterious techniques. (Little did I know that Ms. Roitfeld’s secret to the perfect eye makeup is to sleep in it.)

So, I was giddy to learn Brigitte Caille’s easy, five-minute (or less!) method. I sat down with Caille to discuss the tutorial over the phone, which you can listen to here if you’re an aural learner. We also chat about makeup, gray hair, and what it means to get older in 2022.

Or, if you just want to learn her smokey eye technique, keep reading for the step-by-step process.

Smokey Eye Supplies

The first step in creating this simple smokey eye is to arm yourself with the right supplies. This tutorial requires an eye crayon, blending brushes, an eyelash curler, and mascara. Feel free to use your favorite brands (read: whatever’s in your makeup bag right now). Or, check out our recommendations below.

Step-By-Step Smokey Eye

  1. Apply eye crayon color to the eyelid in a half-moon shape, starting at your lash line and stopping before the crease.
  2. Using a fluffy brush, blend the arc of the half-moon into your crease until there are no definite lines visible.
  3. Apply the eye crayon to your lower lash line, joining the color at the outer corner of your eyes.
  4. Using a smaller, firmer brush (a good ol’ Q-tip also works), blend the color along the bottom of the lash line so that the color looks even and soft.
  5. Curl your eyelashes.
  6. Apply mascara.
  7. Smolder into the mirror for a few minutes (okay, this part’s optional).

Extra Tips For Creating The Perfect Smokey Look

  • Make sure the color goes all the way to your upper lash line. If you notice any white space between your lashes and the lid, try gently nuzzling the crayon right into your lashes so that the color covers all of your visible lid.
  • If your eyes are hooded, you may need to blend the color up higher above your crease. Keep blending until you can see the makeup while looking straight ahead in the mirror.
  • For a more intense look, line the upper and lower water line.
  • If you don’t already have a crayon you like, Brigitte suggests testing before you buy to find one that’s compatible with your skin type. If you have oilier skin, you’ll do better with a crayon that goes on drier, so the color doesn’t easily melt off. If your skin is dry, you might want a creamier crayon that contains more moisturizing ingredients. Otherwise, the color might set too quickly, and you’ll have trouble blending.
  • Don’t worry about it looking perfect. It shouldn’t! It should be a casual, stress-free, five-minute (or less!) application.

We Discuss How To Make The Perfect (Easy) Smokey Eye For 50+ Women With Professional MUA https://www.suggest.com/brigitte-caille-over-50-smokey-eye-tutorial/2676435/ Tue, 03 May 2022 00:15:53 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2676435 Close-up of woman applying eyeshadow

If you’re navigating midlife and think it’s time to give up rocking (or trying to rock) a smokey eye look, allow this conversation I had with professional MUA Brigitte Caille to disabuse you of that notion—also, see Carine Roitfeld.

I met Brigitte through the #silversisters network on Instagram and quickly asked if I could pick her brain for valuable tips on easy makeup when you’re 50-ish. I’m so glad I did because I finally know how to create a smokey-eye look in under five minutes.

To be honest, I’ve never really had the confidence to try a smokey eye before. In fact, I’m so intimidated by eye makeup in general that I had resigned myself to using only mascara. I just didn’t feel I had the time or energy to experiment, especially when I was sure it would end in me washing my face and going back to the mascara-only look.

If you feel the same way, I promise you’ll change your mind after checking out Brigitte’s tips. And if you’d rather read the steps than watch them, we’ve got you covered.

This Brush-On Sunscreen Also Doubles As A Sheer Foundation, And It’s All I’m Using This Summer https://www.suggest.com/colorescience-brush-on-sunscreen-sheer-foundation/2637441/ Mon, 02 May 2022 14:59:07 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2637441 Colorescience brush-on foundation and sunscreen

Summertime is great for a lot of things, but not for skincare. High temps and powerful UV rays disaffect the skin from the inside out. Not only do sweat and exposure to the elements cause our makeup to smear, fade, and run, but more outdoor time can lead to increased risk from the sun’s harmful rays.

Sunscreen might effectively protect against UV rays, but it’s often comedogenic, clogging pores and oversaturating the skin. Some formulas can also leave skin feeling greasy and looking shiny. Meanwhile, our winter foundations can feel heavy and look streaky under a base of sunscreen and sweat.

So, I went on the hunt for a multitasking product that could perfect and protect my skin while feeling light and breathable. I didn’t want to sacrifice protection with low SPF moisturizers or foundations, while I also didn’t want to go completely bare face while out and about.

I wasn’t entirely unconvinced that I was looking for a magical makeup unicorn. But lo and behold, in my search for the perfect combination of sun protection and cosmetic coverage, I found Colorescience.

My Summertime Skincare’s Changed Forever

Colorescience Total Protection Brush-On Shield, gentle, paraben and sulfate-free
(Colorescience)

Colorescience’s Sunforgettable® Total Protection Brush-On Shield SPF 50 was the holy grail product I was looking for, and I’m happy to report my skincare game will never be the same again. This revolutionary product checked all of my boxes (and then some).

This wasn’t easy to do, either—my list of requirements was long. First on my list of must-have qualities was easy application. I know my way around a makeup brush, but I don’t have the extra time for lengthy, complicated applications. Luckily, the Sunforgettable® Brush-On Shield SPF 50 is truly an all-in-one product.

Both the product and the applicator are included in one handy, portable tool. I can pop it into any of my go-to summer bags, from my everyday crossbody to beach totes to on-the-go wristlets. Simply tap, flick, swipe, and you’re done. Box one: check.

My next requirement involved the formula itself. I have sensitive skin that reacts negatively to harsh, comedogenic products. The Sunforgettable® Brush-On Shield is hypoallergenic, paraben- and sulfate-free, fragrance-free, and cruelty-free. In other words, it’s gentle enough for my overly dramatic skin. Box two: check.

Cosmetic And Protective Power Combined

Colorescience all-mineral foundation and sunscreen formula
(Colorescience)

In addition to high-quality formulas and ease of use, I wanted a product that was equally effective as a foundation and sunscreen. (This was arguably my most challenging requirement.) Colorescience passed this test with flying colors, too.

The Sunforgettable® Brush-On Shield SPF 50 comes in four blendable shades: fair, medium, tan, and deep. My go-to color ranges from medium to tan, depending on the time of year. Each shade provides ample coverage, evening the complexion and hiding imperfections.

This 100% all-mineral formula also contains EnviroScreen Technology to protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays, pollution, blue (HEV) light, and infrared radiation. Colorescience’s potent blend of iron oxides, antioxidants, and moisturizing hyaluronic acid powder beautifies and protects the skin.

In fact, Colorescience makes your skin look so good that you might not even feel you need cosmetic coverage at all. And when those good-skin days come around, Colorescience (still) has you covered.

I Found My Perfect Coverage

Women wearing Colorescience light, buildable coverage foundation and sunscreen
(Colorescience)

I recently took a trip to the Southeast coast, and my Colorescience brush was the first thing I packed in my carry-on. Thanks to its convenient powder formula, not only did I have no trouble getting through airport security. But I also didn’t have to worry about fitting my Brush-On Shield in a tiny quart bag for liquids.

I applied my Total Protection Brush-On Shield every morning before tossing it in my tote for reapplication throughout the day. The product felt featherlight while still providing enough coverage to even my skin tone. I reapplied in seconds while en route to the beach, at midday poolside, and even while waiting for dinner.

The Sunforgettable® Brush-On Shield SPF 50‘s all-in-one technology made application a breeze—no extra tools, counter space, or even mirrors required. I used Medium, as my Midwestern skin still hasn’t gotten its “sun-kissed glow” yet. While my shoulders and legs were getting redder, my face stayed hydrated, happy, and noticeably un-burnt.

Add Even More Dimension To Your Coverage

Woman wearing Colorescience Brush-On Shield Bronze, contour and dimension
(Colorescience)

Colorescience offers variations of their award-winning brush-on sunscreen, and two new iterations have me very excited: Bronze and Glow.

Until my skin gets used to the midsummer sun, my skin stays pretty fair and susceptible to burns. Luckily, Colorescience’s Bronze Brush is great for adding natural, sun-kissed warmth without appearing orange or heavy. I apply it all over when I’m looking for a naturally warm glow. Alternatively, I’ll also use it just under my cheekbones as a contour to add dimension.

On the other hand, Glow’s light-reflecting formula adds a lit-from-within luminescence to the skin. Similar to the Bronze, the soft pearlescent Glow is perfect for all-over luminosity or as a highlighter to make my face really pop. Together, Bronze and Glow work perfectly with the Sunforgettable® Brush-On Shield SPF 50 to create a natural but radiant complexion that highlights my best features.

Colorescience Brush-On Shield recommended by Skin Cancer Foundation
(Colorescience)

If my word isn’t enough to convince you, then take it from the skincare experts. Colorescience’s Total Protection Brush-On Shield is the only brush-on powder sunscreen recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation as an effective broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Moreover, this product is recommended by over 1,000 physicians to their patients. It has also won numerous accolades, including the 2021 Allure Best of Beauty Award for Best Facial Mineral Sunscreen, the 2020 NewBeauty Award for Best Powder Sunscreen, and Instyle’s 2016 Best Beauty Buy, and the 2016 NewBeauty Beauty Choice Award.

But remember—just like regular sunscreen, reapplication is essential for continued coverage throughout the day. Thankfully, the Total Protection Brush-On Shield SPF 50 is water- and sweat-resistant for up to 80 minutes. I enjoyed plenty of time in the pool, ocean, and sunshine, knowing my face was protected and hydrated.

Plus, Colorescience’s brush bristles are antimicrobial. So, while I got sweatier and sweatier, my Colorescience brush stayed fresh and clean. These extra-clean bristles also prevent bacteria buildup on your skin, protecting your face against breakouts and spontaneous oil slicks.

It’s Time To Switch Up Your Summer Skincare

Stop suffering through summertime skincare woes. Thanks to Colorescience, you never have to choose between cosmetic coverage and sun protection again. The Total Protection Brush-On Shield SPF 50 benefits your skin on every level, helping you look good, feel even better, and protect your skin for years to come.

Most importantly, don’t keep this secret to yourself. I shared it with you, and now it’s your turn. Colorescience’s Brush-On Shield makes an excellent Mother’s Day, birthday, or just-because gift for friends and family.

From its easy application and portability to its ingenious and effective formulas, Colorescience’s Sunforgettable® Total Protection Brush-On Shield SPF 50 is waiting to change your skincare game forever.

This Genius Tutorial Shows How To Hide Permanent Undereye Circles https://www.suggest.com/correct-way-to-cover-dark-under-eye-circles/2635524/ Tue, 26 Apr 2022 23:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2635524 A model showcasing the difference between her natural look and reduced dark circles with this concealer trick.

If you have dark undereye circles, then you likely already know the basics for covering them up. Concealer types and techniques have shifted in and out of vogue over the years, all promising to make our eyes look bright and plump.

And if you have dark undereye circles, then you know that a lot of these “tricks” don’t actually work. In fact, depending on the cause of your dark circles, concealer might not even be the right tool for the job.

I’ve struggled with undereye circles since before I knew they were a “problem” to fix. (Thanks, stress and genetics!) But it wasn’t until I watched a Sephora PRO Artist tutorial that I realized I’ve been trying to correct my eye circles completely wrong.

Identifying The Problem To Figure Out The Correct Solution

David Razzano of Sephora PRO begins his tutorial by explaining that not all undereye circles are the same. While discoloration can be fixed with a color corrector and full coverage, that’s not a one-size-fits-all technique.

Sometimes, Razzano explains, undereye circles are caused by a natural recess of the skin over the eye socket. This has to do with your bone structure, not how much sleep you got last night. You need a different technique to fix these types of undereye bags.

1. Prep The Undereye Area With A Caffeine Infused Cream

The first step to Razzano’s eye bag-removal technique is one I’ve never thought to consider: prepping the undereye. (Isn’t waking up and washing my face “prep” enough?!)

Razzano recommends Origins Ginzing brightening eye cream with ginseng and caffeine. The caffeine stimulates blood flow and plumps the undereye area.

Origins Ginzing brightening eye cream with ginseng and caffeine
(Origins)

The potent eye cream depuffs and brightens the undereye area, while the lightweight formula allows for product layering without unsightly creases. Split a pea-size dab of cream between both undereye areas, dabbing the product lightly with your fingertips.

2. Lightly Conceal Using A Shade That Matches Your Skin Tone

Next, Razzano uses a concealer that closely matches the model’s skin tone. He places two to three small dots under each eye with the applicator. Then, he uses an angled concealer brush that mimics the pad of a fingertip to blend the product.

Milk Makeup Flex Concealer
(Milk Makeup)

Milk Makeup’s Flex Concealer blends into the undereye area without caking or creasing. The featherlight concealer is also infused with blue lotus and chamomile to moisturize and calm the skin, respectively—two must-haves for tired, dull skin under the eyes.

Sephora Pro Concealer #71 Brush.
(Sephora)

The magic behind Razzano’s recommended concealer brush is the bristles’ shape. The tapered, rounded oval shape mimics the pad of a finger. So, you get the most natural coverage while still getting the control and precision of a brush.

Razzano dabs the concealer all over with the fattest part of the brush. But for this next step, you’ll want to implement the narrower precision side of the brush.

3. Tackle The Inner Corner Shadow With A Brightening Cream

Up until this point, I figured I had this technique down already—it was my products, not my methods, preventing me from getting my desired results. But I was wrong. In this next step, Razzano focuses on the dreaded inner corner shadow.

The inner corner shadow starts near the tear duct and swoops down away from the nose. It’s often the outermost rim of an eyebag, and it’s incredibly difficult to conceal. Here’s where the magic happens.

Unless you address the inner corner shadow directly, Razzano explains, your eyebags will still be apparent. The trick to truly hiding your eyebags is to create an illusion of light by strategically using two different concealers.

To master this illusion of light and shadow, Razzano uses a much more sheer, almost watery concealer in a lighter shade than the first concealer. The Tarte Aquacealer Concealer used in the video is no longer in production, but Rare Beauty’s Liquid Touch Brightening Concealer is an excellent dupe.

Rare Beauty Liquid Touch Brightening Concealer
(Rare Beauty)

He swipes the product onto his hand, picking up the concealer with the narrow side of his brush. Using the slim side, he dabs concealer directly into the inner eye shadow—nowhere else. Precision is key here.

The inner eye shadow is the most deeply set part of the eyebag. By using a bright concealer, you bring this area forward to match the space above it with the slightly darker concealer. If you spread the brighter concealer up to the main undereye area, then the light is dispersed unevenly again, and the illusion is lost.

4: Set With A Lightweight Brightening Powder For All Day Staying Power

Finally, Razzano finishes the look by brushing on a layer of Laura Mercier’s Secret Brightening Powder. Rather than using a large powder brush, Razzano uses a small eyeshadow brush to keep the application precise and strategic.

Laura Mercier's Secret Brightening Powder
(Laura Mercier)

This airy powder illuminates the undereye area without sucking out moisture or caking into lines. It also locks in the two concealers for all-day coverage, keeping you bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, whether it’s 2 pm or 2 am.

Serum and other solution-specific products can seem intimidating to newbies. But Colorescience combined all of the best ingredients into one, easy-to-use treatment for pros and novices alike.

This eye renewal serum and undereye concealer combo improves the appearance of dark circles, puffiness, fine lines, and wrinkles. It comes in four shades: fair, medium, tan, and deep, ensuring a perfect skin tone match.

It also provides unbeatable protection against UVA and UVB rays, making this eye serum a summertime must-have. This product doesn’t just mask problem areas, either. It actively works to improve skin health by restoring hydration and collagen production.

Lip Shine SPF 35

Lips aren’t normally the first place we think to put sunscreen, but they’re one of the more delicate parts of our face. Save yourself from a week of uncomfortable, sunburnt lips with Colorescience’s Lip Shine SPF 35

Available in six colors with a slight shimmer, Colorescience’s Lip Shine offers a whole slew of benefits. The muted pinks, browns, and reds provide a touch of pigment without being overwhelming. Plus, Maxi-Lip Peptide conditions the lips for a smoother, more plumped appearance.

Hyaluronic acid hydrates, vitamin E protects against free radicals, and 6.6% zinc oxide defends against the sun’s harmful rays. No other lip gloss in your collection is working this hard.

Beauty On The Go Palette

It’s hard to beat a beauty brand that protects, nourishes, and actively improves the skin. Even if it means buying multiple products separately, it’s worth it in the end, right? Maybe—but thanks to Colorescience’s Beauty On The Go Palette, you don’t have to find out.

This all-in-one palette contains five neutral shades, from golden champagne shimmer to a rich, warm coffee. Each color can be used for various purposes. Brighten and camouflage dark spots, add color or contour to cheeks, or define the eyes.

Every shade boasts a pure mineral, paraben-free, fragrance-free, and vegan formula. So, you can rest assured you’re putting only the best ingredients on your skin from browbone to collarbone.

Save Time (And Money!) With These Multi-Tasking Powerhouse Products

“More products” rarely means “more results,” which is why Colorescience keeps things simple. Their products protect and nourish the skin while improving its appearance without the added chemicals, heaviness, or product count.

De-clutter your bathroom counter, and switch to a product line that works for your skin—not on top of it. That natural glow is already inside you; Colorescience just perfected a way to enhance and preserve it.

Christie Brinkley Shares Her Simple Secrets For Women Over 50 To Look Fresh, Fast https://www.suggest.com/christie-brinkley-must-know-tips-and-favorite-beauty-products/2631969/ Mon, 04 Apr 2022 21:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2631969 Christie Brinkley smiling in red

Christie Brinkley is the OG all-American supermodel, and at 68, she is still as beautiful as ever. She attributes her timeless beauty to her beauty routine. In a recent Instagram post, the former model and actress shared her must-know tips for staying fresh and flawless for women over 50.

The star’s lineup of beauty tips includes products from her exciting new partnership with SBLA Beauty. SBLA Beauty isn’t just another beauty brand; it specializes in anti-aging solutions backed by science so that you can age beautifully.

A lover of SBLA’s mission, Brinkley also shared some beauty tips and tricks that she can’t live without.

Christie Brinkley’s 7 Must-Have Beauty Tips For Women ver 50

In her video, Brinkley walked through some of her favorite products from SBLA Beauty, as well as how she applied them. She also highlighted her makeup routine, sharing some genius application tips to ensure a fresh, smooth look.

1. SBLA Beauty The Facial Instant Sculpting Wand

Christie Brinkley uses facelift wand

Brinkley begins her lineup with the SBLA Facial Instant Sculping Wand. Known as a cult favorite anti-aging serum, it claims to firm and lift fine lines around the eyes, forehead, and lips. Further, it has been clinically proven to tighten and smooth the face and significantly promote collagen production. It also brightens and evens out skin tone, reduces puffy raccoon eyes, and reverses unsightly dark spots on the skin.

In the video, Brinkley demonstrates how to apply the serum to the face. “Apply it to your forehead, around the eyes, around the mouth, and at night almost everywhere.”

2. SBLA Neck, Chin & Jawline Sculpting Wand

Don’t forget the decollété! Luckily, Brinkley is on it without skipping a beat, recognizing that the delicate area is often overlooked. Her next beauty tip is using the SBLA Neck, Chin, and Jawline Sculping Wand because taking care of your skin does not stop at your face.

“Apply it all under here, down the neck, down the decolletage. It’ll even out skin tones; it’ll tighten things up with peptides and active ingredients that build back collagen and elastin,” the former supermodel explains. “You need these two working for you underneath everything else that you do.”

3. A Flawless Finish

Tom Ford foundation
(Tom Ford)

There’s no doubt we have all seen it, the dreaded makeup line on the jawline, the result of skipping the neck while blending foundation. Brinkley draws attention to this makeup faux pas by showing how to avoid it.

A beauty blender, everybody probably knows this by now, but you do not want your makeup to suddenly end right here,” Brinkley explains with a beauty blender in hand. “Wet your beauty blender; I like to do it with warm water. I put two different color foundations on my hand. I put the lighter one under my eye, I put the warmer one under the cheek, and then I just use a little bit of whatever is left and apply it down the neck, down the decolletage, and over the forehead.”

While she doesn’t specify which foundation she used in the video, it appears to be two shades of Tom Ford’s Traceless Soft Matte Foundation.

4. A Strong Brow

Lancome brow liner
(Lancome Paris)

In her fourth beauty tip, Brinkly shows you how to achieve show-stopping brows. She informs her fans that she uses two pencils to keep them on point. “I use two pencils, this one is Kevin Aucoin, and this one is Lancome,” she says.

“I just paint with the [Kevin Aucoin] on little things that look like little hairs going in the same direction, but I always focus along the top line only because you want to be thinking up up up, defy gravity, up up up. But as you age, the eyebrows start to thin out, so…” says Brinkley as she holds the eyebrow pencils as a saving grace.

5. A Rosy Glow

Nars laguna blush
(NARS)

Christie knows that no look is complete without a gorgeous rosy glow. To achieve that, she uses two blushes. “I use this one by NARS called Laguna and this one by Christie Brinkley, love her. She makes the best things,” Brinkley giggles.

“And I put the warmer one down here,” Brinkley says, brushing the darker shade of Nars towards her lower cheek. “I put this beautiful lighter one on top to blend,” she says as she applies it to her cheeks using the same brush. “And I sort of rub it all over my forehead and down the neck,” Brinkley adds

6. Effortless Falsies

Unfortunately, the beauty queen admits that many things start thinning out as we age, but not the things we would wish for. “Isn’t it a shame that our stomach and thighs don’t thin, just our eyelashes and our hair,” Brinkley complains. In the meantime, Brinkley recommends demi wispies for opening those eyes!

7. SBLA Beauty Double The Plump Lip Plump & Sculpt

Having thinning eyebrows and thinning lips go hand in hand. Thanks to the former supermodel, you can easily sculpt and refirm your lips with this beauty tip. Brinkley showed how to plump up your lips with a sneak preview of SBLA’s newest Double The Plump Lip Plump & Sculp.

“I love them, and you will too, look how great the color is,” Brinkley said as she glided the swoon-worthy shade across her lips. “Look how it plumps my lips,” she added.

This Revolutionary Lipstick Printer Can Create Over 1000 Custom Shades https://www.suggest.com/ysl-beauty-rogue-sure-mesure-lipstick-printer-review/2629262/ Sun, 20 Mar 2022 21:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2629262 ROUGE SUR MESURE CUSTOM LIP COLOR CREATOR

Whether you prefer nude hues, Marilyn Monroe’s famous shade, or almost lipstick, if you enjoy wearing lipstick of any kind, this one’s for you.

Beauty products are finally becoming more inclusive and personalized. And, custom skin, body, and hair care are all the rage these days. So, if you were able to make your own perfect shade of lipstick, would you try? Well, there’s a new lipstick printer that could help you do just that.

The Lipstick(s) Of The Future

YSL BEAUTY ROUGE SUR MESURE CUSTOM LIP COLOR CREATOR
(YSL Beauty)

Gone are the days of picking a shade of lipstick only to get home and realize it looks terrible on you. Not when you have Rouge Sur Mesure Custom Lip Color Creator at your fingertips. This incredible lipstick printer can create thousands of shades with a few color cartridges and an app on your phone. The future is here, kids.

The lip color creator works with an app on your phone to help you create the shade you’re looking for. It does come with a price tag though. The “printer” costs about $299 on its own, and the mixing color trios will cost you $89. The color trios come in red, orange, pink, and nude to help create shades in your favorite color family.

Creating the shades you want is pretty simple. On the app, there are options of ‘shade wheel’, ‘shade stylist’, and ‘shade match.’ You are, however, limited by the color family that you choose. The ‘shade wheel’ gives you some options, from light to dark in your chosen color family. The ‘shade stylist’ gives you color recommendations based on your outfit. And, the ‘shade match’ option will create the closest approximation based on a picture of a shade.

Is It Worth The Money?

Because I don’t have the extra money laying around to buy the base and cartridges, I went to YouTube to find a review of the Rouge Sur Mesure Custom Lip Color Creator.

Robert Welsh is wildly entertaining to watch, and luckily has a video using the lipstick printer. In the video, Welsh has two color cartridge trios to work with- nude and orange. It becomes pretty clear that without all of the color cartridges, you will be extremely limited in what shades you create.

Overall, Welsh’s takeaway from the product was that it was fun to use, but not entirely necessary. While Welsh says the texture of the lipstick is “really nice” and the portable compact to carry your custom lip color was convenient, he expected a bit more than the lipstick printer provided. His recommendations to the makers include adding in black, white, and grey to mix with the color trios to give a wider range of shade options.

Welsh says, “The customization of the lipstick isn’t drastic enough to have a whole machine, that’s just my option.” But then goes on to say, “I think it’s a really, really good idea though, I think it’s an incredible idea. The lipstick itself is really, really beautiful, it’s a really nice texture.”

So, in the end, this could be the product for you, if you like gadgets and lip color. We’re curious to see how the lip printer evolves, though.

Breaking out of old makeup routines is difficult. Exploring new techniques and products takes time, research, and experimentation. The stakes can feel even higher when you consider splurging on luxury cosmetics.

However, the splurge is well worth the investment. High-quality cosmetics look and feel better—most importantly, they’re better for you. But where do you begin?

In times of uncertainty, sometimes it helps to return to where humans found meaning in chaos for millennia: the stars. Your personality—or Zodiac profile—plays more into your makeup habits than you might think.

From vivacious Leo to eccentric Aquarius, these are the best luxury makeup products you need based on your Zodiac sign:

March 20 – April 19

You are bold, competitive, and impulsive, and your makeup routine reflects that. While you love putting your best face forward, you don’t like lengthy application processes. The quicker you can get back to slaying all day, the better.

For this reason, you deserve a high-quality illuminating eyeshadow base. A quality eyeshadow base transforms your eyelids into smooth, blank canvases. Whether you’re going simple or rocking a new, bold shadow, you’ll be able to create top-notch looks in no time at all.

April 19 – May 20

Technically, this is a skincare product and not cosmetics. But let’s be honest—were you really interested in changing your makeup routine, Taurus? You know what you want better than anyone else. Consequently, you likely have no plans of changing your usual go-to look.

Instead, indulge yourself after you remove your makeup. This decadent gold sugar scrub speaks to your lavish taste while exfoliating and refining your skin. You don’t have to change your routine entirely; this just makes it better.

May 20 – June 21

As a summer baby, you’re naturally drawn to warmer weather. Even your personality embodies the warmth, freedom, and easygoing nature of your birth season. Luckily, you can capture that same sun-kissed essence in your makeup routine.

Clé de Peau Beauté’s Bronzing Powder Duo adds a perfectly radiant glow to your complexion. The terracotta pigment is infused into a silky powder for easy application. You might not be able to enjoy summer vacation year-round, but you can at least look like you just got back from holiday.

June 21 – July 22

Routine and tradition are incredibly attractive to you, and your makeup regimen is no different. You prefer functional, gentle products over lavish or eccentric ones. Indeed, your cosmetics should be just as sensitive as you, Cancer.

For this reason, your top luxury cosmetic is an all-natural, paraben-free, vegan lip balm. It contains vitamin E and three omega-rich oils (olive, pistachio, and borage seed) for ultimate hydration. This balm is as gentle and soothing as can be, just like you.

July 22 – August 22

It doesn’t take much to enhance your natural glow, Leo. And despite your natural flair for the dramatic, you tend to avoid campy or zany looks. Instead, you let your natural charisma and radiance do the talking—no wild colors or techniques required.

Boost your internal glow with Manasi’s 7-Silk Glow Powder. Manasi crafts their powder with wild-harvested and organic silica, silk powder, and mica for an unbelievably luminous look. No one will be able to take their eyes off you. (But isn’t that how it usually goes?)

August 22 – September 22

When you’re busy knocking off endless to-do lists day in and day out, your makeup routine needs to be simple. Therefore, the best product for overachievers (read: you) is a convenient lip and cheek duo by Edward Bess. This set does triple cosmetic duty, which is just your style.

The Iris Apfel 100th Birthday Celebration Set features a red lip, pink shadow, and rouge. Interchange the products for different looks, or stick with the classics. This set is named after a fellow go-getter Virgo: businesswoman and fashion icon, Iris Apfel.

September 22 – October 23

If anyone can spot imbalance, it’s you, Libra. On your best days, you seek out stability, equilibrium, and serenity. On your typical days, you feel indecisive and wishy-washy. But as with any scenario, it’s easier to find balance with a solid foundation.

That’s why you need a product like the Edward Bess Ultra Dewy Complexion Perfector. The skin correcting cream is infused with light-diffusing particles, giving you a radiant, even glow. No matter which look you end up going with that day, this complexion perfector creates a neutral, uniform base.

October 23 – November 22

When it comes to your makeup routine, you like to choose products that match your mysterious, abstract flair. You are a naturally powerful and intense person, and your makeup needs to reflect that. Indeed, people notice when you walk into the room. So, give ‘em something to look at.

The Edward Bess Ultra Slick Lipstick in Wicked Game is a perfectly vampy choice for you, Scorpio. The long-lasting, hydrating formula is comfortable to wear all day long. Meanwhile, the blend of mauve and red wine gives you that va-va-voom look you’ve been wanting.

November 22 – December 21

Your eyes are always on the prize, so why not give them something that will look fantastic? Eyeliner is one of the more versatile elements of a makeup routine, and you’re never one to shy away from an experiment. If it means finding the next best look, you’re all for it.

Whether you’re out with friends or climbing the corporate ladder, this extended wear formula eyeliner will keep you looking fierce and razor-sharp. Thanks to a handy “fix it” precision tip and smooth gel formula, that’s precisely how this liner will look, too.

December 21 – January 20

Just because you’re stressed to the max doesn’t mean you have to look stressed to the max. There’s no doubt that you have plenty on your plate as it is. So, it’s best to keep your makeup routine simple and streamlined (and stress-free).

This Undo Time Blurring Perfector helps minimize the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration. Chronic stress isn’t great for our skin. But alas, life is stressful. This must-have product helps you look well-rested and fresh-faced, even if you’re exhausted and on day three of no showering.

January 20 – February 18

You are naturally charismatic, eccentric, and unique. So, your makeup has big shoes to fill. You would never want to be described as “boring,” and why should your makeup be any different? It doesn’t have to be thanks to Edward Bess’s extraordinary deep shine lip gloss

The high shine gloss comes in nine outstanding shades, from cherry-red to bright fuschia. Get supple hydration and brilliant shine with this non-sticky, delicious-smelling gloss. With nine colors to choose from, you can rock a bold, unique look every day of the week.

February 18 – March 19

The eyes are the windows to the soul, and your soul is incomparably deep. Still, the bags under your eyes don’t have to reflect that depth. You spend a lot of time daydreaming (and worrying). Keep your eyes bright even when your thoughts go dark with Clé de Peau Beauté’s Radiant Eye Corrector.

The pearl-powered liquid concealer covers dark circles and dullness for brighter, more alert eyes. Meanwhile, the chestnut fruit extract defends against oxidation, one of the key components in the aging process. A win-win!

Audrey Hepburn’s Intense Beauty Routine Included Yogurt Face Masks, Using Tweezers To Separate Each Eyelash, And So Much More https://www.suggest.com/audrey-hepburns-beauty-makeup-skincare-routine/2623268/ Wed, 23 Feb 2022 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2623268 Headshot portrait of Belgian-born actor Audrey Hepburn (1929 - 1993) leaning on her hand in a red jacket with a poodle applique.

Audrey Hepburn has been synonymous with elegance and beauty throughout her life and career. Hepburn’s iconic image in the little black dress by Hubert de Givenchy, which she wore for Breakfast at Tiffany’s, has become an eternal symbol of elegance, class, and sophistication. But, even as Hepburn’s peak of fame has long passed, her legacy remains.

Hepburn’s beauty was undeniable. But, how did she remain so flawless through the years? In her time, Hepburn didn’t have access to the abundance of makeup and beauty hacks that we’re obsessed with today. Rather, Hepburn had more than one beauty tip up her sleeve; timeless beauty lessons that should not be overlooked.

Audrey Hepburn’s Beauty Regime

Dramatic Eyelashes

Among Audrey’s most iconic qualities, the cat-eye flick appeared long before it became a trend. The actress was also famed for her dramatic lashes. While recreating the feline flick isn’t too tricky, Hepburn’s lash ritual might make some cringe. After applying mascara, Hepburn’s makeup artist, Alberto De Rossi, would carefully separate each individual eyelash with a pin or tweezer to prevent clumps.

Regular Dermatologist Visits

Hepburn had the captivating quality of appearing undeniably beautiful, but never overdone. Her natural beauty was achieved through proper skincare in collaboration with a dermatologist.

Hepburn’s dermatologist Erno Laszlo, however, was no ordinary doctor. He also worked with Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, and Ava Gardner. “I owe 50 percent of my beauty to my mother, and the other 50 percent to Erno Laszlo,” Hepburn once said. Amazingly, you can still purchase products from the Erno Laszlo skincare line today, through Amazon.

Never Skipping On Her Favorite Hair Product

(PhilipKingsley.com)

Philip Kingsley, a famed stylist, met Audrey Hepburn in 1974 and developed the now-cult classic Elasticizer, which forever left the actress swooning. Specially formulated for Hepburn, the repairing hair mask promises to moisturize and keep hair healthy and bouncy.

Audrey loved Philip Kingsley’s Elasticizer Deep-Conditioning Hair Mask so much that she always ordered it regularly to ensure it never ran out.

Defining Her Cupid’s Bow

In addition to her love of thick black winged eyeliner and beautiful wispy eyelashes, Hepburn also loved bold red lips. Nonetheless, Hepburn added a touch of femininity by defining Cupid’s bow. You can replicate her look by first applying lipliner following your natural lip line but applying it just below your natural Cupid’s bow for an exaggerated shape. Finish off the look with matte red lipstick.

Refreshing Yogurt Face Masks

In order to maintain natural beauty, Hepburn made sure to incorporate various skincare products into her skincare regime. She reportedly had dry skin, so she used several moisturizers and oils. While Hepburn favored more traditional beauty products, she also favored more natural alternatives.

Known for applying fresh Greek yogurt to her face, she would let it sit on her skin for about half an hour before washing it off. The lactic acid in Greek yogurt offers a natural way to gently exfoliate while hydrating the skin.

Strong Eyebrows

Among Audrey Hepburn’s many iconic traits were her strong eyebrows, which still have us swooning. Let’s face it, this Hollywood beauty wouldn’t look the same with pencil-thin brows. Thus, proving any beautiful face benefits from bold, thick brows. Still, Hepburn didn’t allow them to grow wild. Rather, she kept her eyebrows immaculately groomed and filled them in with a dark brown eyebrow pencil.

Weekly Steam Facials

To achieve a smooth complexion, Hepburn enjoyed steam facials twice a week as part of her intense skincare routine. A steam facial at the spa may not be within everyone’s budget, however, you can buy a facial steamer for use at home.

Alternatively, you can create spa-like steam using a large bowl and a towel. Pour boiling water into a bowl, and then lean your face over the bowl with a towel draped over your head. As a result, the steam will penetrate your pores and leave you feeling refreshed within minutes.

Less Is More

A conservative approach to her makeup application was also one of the keys to Hepburn’s everlasting youth. The Hollywood royal knew that the secret to radiant skin was to go lighter on makeup. As Hepburn knew, less is more, so rather than overloading her face with heavy foundations and excessive eyeshadows, she let her face breathe.

‘Blue Foundation’ Is A Makeup Artist Trick To Enhancing Your Skin Tone https://www.suggest.com/how-to-color-correct-too-warm-foundation-blue-mixing-pigment/2616990/ Wed, 02 Feb 2022 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2616990 L.A. Girl Pro Matte Mixing Pigment

If you’re a little confused about the “blue foundation” trend, join the club. While at first glance, it may look like a makeup tutorial to audition for the Blue Man Group, it actually has a lot more to do with your skin’s undertones than performance art.

First, A Little About Undertones

There are three traditional undertones. And, while there are so many different types of skin tones (according to Pantone there are 110 to be exact), cool, warm, and neutral are the three basic undertones. Skin tones can vary widely and may change with the season, but your undertone never changes.

Chart showing shades of warm, cool, and neutral undertones.
(Angela Cini/Shutterstock.com)

Cool undertones include those who have a red, blueish, or pink tone in their complexion. These people look great in silver jewelry and jewel-toned colors like emerald green. Celebrities with cool undertones include Adele and Nicole Kidman.

Warm undertones can be peachy, yellow, or golden. Those with warm undertones prefer gold jewelry, and they tend to look great in earth tones, like olive green. Celebs with warm undertones include Beyonce and Jessica Alba.

And neutral undertones, you guessed it, pretty much match your skin tone. These are the lucky few that can pull off any look and look great wearing any color in the rainbow. Some celebrities with neutral undertones are Kerry Washington and Natalie Portman.

So, when you buy foundation or other makeup, keeping in mind both your skin tone and skin undertone is important.

A Not-So-Solid Foundation

We’re all guilty of buying a foundation that doesn’t match our undertone. When we grab a foundation from the drugstore or online it’s difficult to completely match our coloring. And that’s the point, right? We want our foundation to blend into our skin to look natural. Not caked on, not painted on, not fake.

Rose Siard, a TikTok makeup artist, shared with her 799k followers, sometimes our foundation needs a little help. That’s where a product like Girl Pro Matte Mixing Pigment comes into play.

To demonstrate, Siard started the video by putting on a shade of foundation with coloring that’s “too warm” and a “little too yellow” for her skin tone. Think of the name of your foundation. Likely, it sounds something like “cool ivory,” “warm almond,” or “golden honey.” That’s because these foundations are compromised of colors that compliment different undertones. So, if you don’t know your undertone, it could cause problems, because certain pigments may or may not “go” with your undertone.

Enter, L.A. Girl Pro Matte Mixing Pigment

The video continues, as Siard puts on the “drugstore” foundation (Maybelline Fit Me) on one side of her face. Obviously, the shade is too dark for her. Then, she put some on her hand to mix with the blue pigment. As she puts one pump of L.A. Girl Pro Matte Mixing Pigment into the foundation, she mixed it with a brush, saying, “it’s going to neutralize those warm tones.”

As she swiped it on the other side of her face the shade is obviously closer to her natural coloring. The foundation now blended in well and looked natural. She ended the video pointing to the “corrected” side of her face and her neck, stating, “It’s the match for me.” She advised grabbing a color-correcting jar, especially if you have trouble picking out foundation

Other Mixing Pigments

While blue may be ideal for those who want to neutralize warm tones, it won’t work for everyone. So, L.A. Girl has other shades to ensure that you can make your personalized foundation color.

There’s a white mixing pigment which is great for lightening a too-dark foundation. If you bought a foundation when you had a tan, and now you’re in the depths of winter, it could be beneficial. This pigment can also neutralize the undertone, making it ideal for Natalie Portman lookalikes (those with a neutral undertone).

The yellow mixing pigment will shift your foundation to a more golden undertone and is great for all skin tones. The yellow will bring out a more neutral or warm undertone, instead of the cool undertone it started with.

This Mature Cat-Eye Eyeliner Hack Looks Crazy, But It Works https://www.suggest.com/mature-cat-eye-eyeliner-hack/2676464/ Thu, 27 Jan 2022 00:36:26 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2676464 Woman applying eyeliner

When I saw Schellea Fowler from Fabulous50s drawing what looked like a monster tooth on her eyelid, I didn’t think it was going to turn out well. But to my surprise, it is actually the secret to a successful cat eye if you are over 50-ish.

That’s because most other techniques don’t take into consideration all the nooks and crannies we have earned by the time we reach midlife. Also, gravity. You can draw what looks like an upturned line on your eyelid while holding your skin taut, but when you let it go, that line likely will head south.

And this is why, apparently, drawing a teepee shape in the outer corner of your eyelid will look like a lovely cat eye when your mature eyelid is at rest. But don’t take it from me, watch Schellea in action below.

Supplies You’ll Need:

1. Primer

Most makeup artists recommend using a primer on your eyelids, especially when you’re doing a bold look. It also helps lock looks in place if you have oily eyelids. I have this one by Ilia, and I love it.

2. Eyeliner Pen

If you want that dark, black, bold look, this pick from Laura Geller is a good choice. Plus, it’s easy(ish) to control, just like a regular pen, though it might take some getting used to for makeup newbies. But practice makes perfect! I love the mature beauty focus of Laura Geller, too.

3. Black Eye Shadow

This can be a good choice for mature eyes because it creates a softer look. It’s also more forgiving since you’re not creating a hard line. This palette from Lime Crime has a collection of fun colors, including classic black, for a good price. Keep it simple with an all-black cat-eye, or experiment with multiple colors (on a budget).

4. Gel Eyeliner

Gel eyeliner is a combination product somewhere between powder and liquid eyeliner. It provides that intense staying power of liquid eyeliner without the too-harsh look. If you’re looking for a multi-tasker (and let’s be honest, who isn’t?), this Kat Von D pomade does triple-duty as an eyeliner, shadow, and brow filler. Plus, it’s vegan, cruelty-free, and waterproof.

5. Angled Brush

Of course, the right applicators are crucial, too. This affordable 3-pack of angled brushes features various sizes so that you can find the perfect applicator for your look. Keep it subtle with the smallest brush, or go for bold and dramatic wings with a large one. And at under $10, this pack helps stretch your dollar even further.

6. Setting Spray

Finally, setting spray locks your look in place, ensuring it looks as good at 8 am as it does at 8 pm. You can dip your brush into this setting spray before using powder eye shadow as a liner to get more control and give it more staying power. Or, you can spritz it over your final look to set it in place.

As our bodies and faces change with age, so should our make-up techniques. While I was a pretty harsh skeptic when I first saw Fowler’s unique technique, I’m now convinced of its efficacy. So long, droopy wings—hello, perky monster teeth.

Yes, You Can Give Yourself A Facelift Just By Using Makeup https://www.suggest.com/how-to-facelift-with-makeup/2615501/ Mon, 24 Jan 2022 17:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2615501 Makeup artist Christen Dominique demonstrating how to give yourself a facelift using various makeup techniques.

Makeup is a valuable tool, offering endless ways to enhance beauty and accentuate our best facial features. Nevertheless, we all can encounter beauty dilemmas from time to time. But, before you opt for an expensive solution for your beauty conundrum, there may be an affordable, simple alternative.

Whatever your goal is, there’s always a simple beauty hack that works, whether it’s creating vibrant eyes with cat-eyeliner or drawing attention to fuller lips with lip liner

But, for those noticing signs of aging, a simple beauty hack may not seem to be enough to restore a face that needs a lift. While the idea of a faux-facelift may seem unbelievable, two celebrity makeup artists promise that their subtle tips and techniques will make all the difference. Plus, you can achieve this clever beauty hack using the makeup that’s already in your bag.

So before you go about your daily makeup routine, make sure to keep in mind these facelifting tricks for a fresh, sculpted look.

Blush Placement Matters

When most of us apply blush, the traditional school of thought is to concentrate on the apples of the check, where we naturally get a bit rosy. While this can still create a nice look, Christen Dominique, founder of Dominique Cosmetics, took to Instagram to demonstrate how applying blush to a higher point on your face can completely transform your appearance.

Blend Contour Upwards

Jamie Dorman, a celebrity makeup artist, offers some advice for women who are contouring their faces. Dorman told InStyle that by blending upwards after applying color, you will not only lift the face but also prevent the contour from appearing muddy. We recommend the Aesthetica Cosmetics Contour and Highlighting Kit as it blends easily and is suitable for all skin types.

Furthermore, while contouring can offer some amazing results, Sir John advised against contouring the forehead so heavily. “Try not to contour your forehead too much,” explained Sir John. “That closes the face and minimizes what the eye can see.”

Less Is More When It Comes To Concealor

Applying heavy concealer under the eye won’t create the illusion of lift if you’re trying to create one. On the contrary, you’re creating the opposite effect. By applying concealer to the inner and outer corner of the eye and blending upward, you can create a lift.

One concealer that we highly recommend is the IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer. Not only is this brand available in a wide variety of shades, but it’s also waterproof and has been shown to drastically improve the appearance of fine lines and dark circles.

Be Strategic With Mascara

In terms of eyes, Sir John explained again that less is more. Rather than focusing on the outer corners of the eyes, try applying mascara to the center of the eyes. “That will induce that ‘Bambi’ effect that we love to see,” he stated.

Lastly, Sir John recommended keeping makeup on the bottom lashes to a minimum. As an alternative, Sir John suggested a subtle beige liner on the bottom lash line, which will make the eyes pop.

Learn The Lifting Eyeliner Technique

Sir John explained how we apply eyeliner can also lift the face. Moreover, using the lifting eyeliner technique is all that it takes.

“Start in the tear ducts and give yourself a beautiful saturated line with a pencil or gel along the upper lash line,” he said. “Once you get to the pupil of your eye, instead of going down, go slightly up, so it gives a lifting effect. Lifting liners can elongate the eyes and make them appear brighter, wider, and bigger.”

Totally Tubular: If You Remember This Saying, You Need This New Mascara Technology https://www.suggest.com/tubing-mascara-tips-roundup/2676470/ Tue, 11 Jan 2022 20:45:48 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/totally-tubular-if-you-remember-this-saying-you-need-this-new-mascara-technology/2676470/ Woman lying down with long eyelashes

Mascara that flakes and falls is never good, but it’s arguably a whole other level of not good after 50. Stray black flecks of mascara disturb the peace I thought I had made with my crow’s feet.

So, I was thrilled to discover a new technology in mascara, which those in the know call “tubing.” It’s an apt moniker because this mascara literally creates tiny tubes around each of your lashes, making them longer and thicker with each swipe of the wand.

The Ins And Outs Of Tubing

Tubing mascara is made with polymers rather than the wax and pigment used in traditional formulas. This makes it water-resistant but gentle. Those with delicate lashes say it won’t cause damage or breaks. Plus, it will stay put even if you have oily eyelids.

When it’s time to remove the mascara, those little tubes stay intact as they disengage from your lashes. So, you don’t get raccoon eyes and smears, just minute cylinders to wipe away, which you can easily do with a warm washcloth. I use a gentle cleanser as well, but experts say water alone will do the trick.

One characteristic to note about tubing mascara is that they are more about length than thickness. If you want fluffy, dense lashes, this might not be the formula for you. More than one coat can lead to clumping, so trying to achieve a thicker lash with more product will likely backfire. But if mile-long lashes are your jam, look no further.

Finding The Right Tubing Formula

I discovered tubing technology when Wander Beauty was doing a big Instagram push, and I bit. I’ve been using the Wander Mile High Club Volume and Length Mascara for about a year now, and I’m hooked. (Although, as I mentioned, and despite the name, I would recommend it more for length than volume.)

Don’t just take it from me: it won the Refinery29 Beauty Innovator Award for Best Mascara, the Allure Best of Beauty Award, and the PureWow x Blink Beauty Indie Beauty Award Winner for Best Mascara all in 2019.

However, if you want to stick with the O.G. of tubing mascaras, then Blinc is your best bet. Blinc claims to be the first brand to utilize a tubing formula and is cruelty-free, clean, and vegan.

Princess Diana’s Iconic Makeup Trend Is Coming Back Into Style https://www.suggest.com/princess-diana-blue-eyeliner/2608076/ Mon, 20 Dec 2021 17:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2608076 A close up of Princess Diana wearing blue eyeliner

Besides her humanitarian and philanthropic endeavors, Princess Diana will always be remembered for her grace, elegance, and head-turning glamour. As a style icon, she never failed to impress, whether in a wedding gown with a 25-foot train or in her coveted “revenge dress,” combined with her signature locks.

Although Princess Di was privy to the latest fashions, she was also famed for her unique use of make-up. In fact, her striking eyeliner looks were among her most memorable.

Princess Diana’s Signature Blue Eyeliner

In terms of her style, the late princess was known to be experimental. The same was true of her makeup. A number of early pictures of Princess Di showed the princess wearing the electric blue liner along her upper and lower waterlines, providing a pop of color to her stunning blue eyes.

In addition to her engagement photo, Princess Diana’s electric blue eyeliner is an iconic look that is seen in some of her earliest Vogue photoshoots. Lord Snowdon’s official portrait of Diana even features this bold look.

(Photo by Jayne Fincher/Princess Diana Archive/Getty Images)

Clayton Howard, a veteran makeup artist, commissioned by Lord Snowdon shared an archive face chart from one of Diana’s photoshoots. And, the face chart revealed that one of the products used was Elizabeth Arden’s Blue kohl 636 eyeliner pencil.

But, as time went on, Diana’s electric blue hue faded and she began to transition to a more natural look. Coincidentally, this took place once she met her new makeup artist Mary Greenwell.

Why Did Princess Diana Say Goodbye To Her Signature Blue Eyeliner?

According to Yahoo, Greenwell, Princess Diana’s former makeup artist, commented that Diana’s iconic blue eyeliner may not have been the best choice for someone of British royalty.

“[Diana] was someone who was in the public eye presenting herself all the time to the public. It isn’t particularly appropriate to go on changing your look every five seconds,” Greenwall explained. “She did change her makeup a bit. It’s just that it wasn’t changed dramatically. I think dramatic change is not really something for somebody who’s in the White House or in office or in a royal family, as it’s just not really appropriate.”

Diana switched to a softer, more natural looking aesthetic with the advice of her makeup artist. In addition to hinting that it was the right move that the princess gave up her girlish blue, Greenwall also noted, “I think beiges and browns are just so much prettier. Simple as that.”

Yet, no matter how Greenwall feels about beige and brown, certain celebrities seem to be embracing the blue. Dua Lipa, Priyanka Chopra, and Sophie Turner have all been spotted wearing the striking shade. It’s clear to see Diana’s trademark hue is in the spotlight once more.

In order to recreate Princess Diana’s most iconic beauty look, you’ll need to find a reliable dupe. Unfortunately, Elizabeth Arden’s Blue kohl 636 pencil is no longer available. We think Charlotte Tilbury’s Eye Color Magic Liner Duo Super Blue comes in as a close second. It features a vivid blue shade similar to Diana’s.

This Clever Makeup Hack Will Result In Instantly Fuller Lips, No Fillers Needed https://www.suggest.com/makeup-hack-instantly-fuller-lips-no-fillers/2606090/ Fri, 10 Dec 2021 23:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2606090 A woman getting her makeup done and doing the lip lift lip liner hack

A youthful, full pout never goes out of style. Fortunately, there is a wide range of available cosmetic treatments such as fillers, lip implants, and lip lifts, making getting voluptuous lips a fairly simple process. But, despite lip enhancement procedures being a breeze, there are drawbacks–including long recovery periods and costly maintenance. So, it may not be the best option for everyone.

Whether you’re on a budget or want to avoid cosmetic procedures altogether, you shouldn’t underestimate the power of lip liner when it comes to making your lips look plumper and fuller without spending a fortune.

Nevertheless, before you roll your eyes, muttering the phrase, “been there, done that,” let us introduce a brilliant technique that mimics the look of a lip lift introduced by makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic. The secret? Strategic placement. And yes, it’s a game-changer!

What Is The ‘Lip Lift’ Lip Liner Hack?

The lip lift lip liner hack went viral on Tiktok shortly after Dedivanoic coined the phrase. It was first introduced in the Makeup By Mario Ultra Suede Sculpting Pencil to his makeup line.

Dedivanoic, while demonstrating the technique in an Instagram video, explained it is an alternative to invasive surgical procedures that are currently in vogue. “There’s this procedure that’s all the rage right now, it’s actually a plastic surgery and it’s called the lip lift” he states. “And what it does is it makes people look a lot more youthful because it lifts the lip and shortens the distance between the lip and the nose… But you don’t have to do that in surgery, you can literally just apply a pencil.”

With Dedivanonic’s simple lip liner hack, Tiktokers are scrambling for their nearest lip liners to give it a try. And the result is large, pillowy lips. So how exactly do you apply lip liner using Dedivanoic’s method? Find out below.

How To Apply Lip Liner The Right Way

As much as you may have always thought to overline the full border of your lips, Dedivanoic shows his fans how that technique will quickly age you. Furthermore, Dedivanoic shows, overlining the corners, particularly in the bottom half, causes the face to sag.

His technique instead consists of overlining specific portions of the lip, such as the center above the cupid’s bow and underneath the same spot on your lower lip. However, when lining the outer edges of your lips with a pencil, you should follow the border rather than draw outside it.

Following the initial outline, Dedivanovic uses the lip liner to add more shading. To finish, Dedivanovic uses a lip brush to blend in the lines towards the center of the lip, giving the lips some natural dimension and making them appear plumper. In addition, Dedivanovic says that lipstick can be applied by using a brush or a tube at this point and gently patted in.

Free From Toxic ‘Forever Chemicals’

The beauty market is oversaturated with so many products that all claim to be natural, pure, or clean. But what does that really mean, and how important is it to choose clean products? Many beauty products are loaded with PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals.” These highly toxic fluorinated chemicals originated with the introduction of Teflon-coated nonstick cookware in the 1940s and today can be found in hundreds of everyday products touted as nonstick, stain-repellant, or waterproof.

While convenient for manufacturing, these chemicals pose a huge health hazard because they build up in our bodies and don’t break down in the environment. Even small doses of PFAS have been linked to cancer and reproductive issues, among other health concerns. Though the EPA, FDA, and other groups are working to understand the impact of PFAS and how to better regulate these chemicals, they are still commonly found in many personal care products. That’s why it’s incredibly important for consumers to educate themselves and to purchase products that are committed to being free of PFAS and other harmful chemicals.

100% PURE lives up to its name by banning PFAS from their products, along with a host of other harmful substances. Additionally, the brand has been re-testing all of their formulas and updating their ingredients to ensure they are providing healthy and safe products to their consumers.

Banana Liner Is Making A Comeback, Here’s How To Easily Get The Look https://www.suggest.com/banana-liner-how-to/2594794/ Wed, 20 Oct 2021 23:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2594794 Side by side collage showcasing the banana eyeliner trend.

Gen Z might be trying to bring back Y2K, but this millennial is more than happy sticking with midcentury. The groovy, art deco beauty looks of the 1960s are timelessly chic.

Mod makeup looks are also deceivingly easy. Even the greenest of MUAs can recreate these looks. One of my favorites is banana liner.

No Bananas Necessary

A quick look through the online MUA community shows a few different ideas of what “banana liner” really means. To clarify, no, we’re not talking about actual bananas

Rather, think ‘Twiggy.’ You’ve likely seen this trend before; you just didn’t know what to call it. The curved eyeliner below the brow bone accentuates the eyes, giving you a doe-eyed, perfectly ‘mod’ look.

The trend’s name refers to the banana-shaped space between the eyeliner and lash line. Though, you can always use the actual fruits for your color inspo like IG user @cinthia_mua.

Modifying The Mod

In addition to being insanely easy to replicate (more on that later), banana liner is also easy to modify. This makeup look can be as 1960s or 2020s as you prefer.

For example, MUA @beatsbylizzie incorporates banana liner into many of her new-age glam looks. Keep it mod with downward-sloped liner. Or make it modern with a cat-eye flick.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with color, either. @makeupstoris blends Art Nouveau, mod 1960s, and modern-day with this aqua blue and lime green look.

But of course, and no disrespect to MUAs everywhere, who has time for that?! Luckily, banana liner can be understated, too. Simplify for everyday with a nude lid and a swipe of mascara a la Sharon Tate.

Making It Your Own

Now, onto the fun part: trying it out yourself. You can achieve banana liner with liquid, gel, pencil, or shadow liner.

For ultra-bold graphic lines, stick with a liquid liner like this one from NYX. NYX PROFESSIONAL Epic Ink Liner is waterproof and has a felt tip for easy, precise application. So, you can get that perfect Twiggy curve on the first try.

If liquid liner isn’t your forte, try a gel liner instead. Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Gel Eyeliner has a high shine finish that lasts up to 24 hours. Its easy-to-use brush is also much more forgiving for liner newbies.

Finally, for a softer look, stick with eyeshadow and a small, angled brush. Inglot’s Duraline transforms any powder product into a liquid. So, you can wear as many colors of banana liner as you have shades of eyeshadow.

Trace your banana liner just under the brow bone, following the natural line of your eye socket. (Charlotte Tilbury’s Twiggy eye tutorial has some great pointers for this part.)

Add as much or as little extra details as you want, and voila—you’ll look like you stepped straight out of 1961. Now you finally have an excuse to buy that pair of go-go boots

Yes, You Can Wear Bronzer And Highlighter After 50—Here’s How To Breathe Life Into Your Cheekbones https://www.suggest.com/bronzer-highlighter-blush-over-50-tutorial/2676478/ Fri, 20 Aug 2021 21:17:12 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/yes-you-can-wear-bronzer-and-highlighter-after-50-heres-how-to-make-it-look-beautiful/2676478/ Woman with two types of bronzer/blush applications on either cheek

Until recently, I assumed my days of bronzer and highlighter were over. Actually, I’ve never worn highlighter (it wasn’t a thing when we were younger, was it?), and I never expected to embrace it. But after seeing living proof of the miracles of these products on over 50 cheekbones via Tamara’s Timeless Beauty, I’m officially a convert.

I’ve collected her tips, in order of application, for how to breathe life into your cheeks with color- and light-enhancing makeup.

1. Bronzer

Tamara’s favorite bronzer is Milani Silky Matte Bronzing Powder, which is very kind to the wallet at just $10. The vegan, cruelty-free formula has skin-smoothing ingredients for an all-day matte finish.

But if you’re like me, you’re not hot on powders. So, perhaps you’ll join me in being excited to try Bobbi Brown’s new Jones Road Miracle Balms, which are super clean and come in shades that work as a highlighter, blush, and bronzer.

Tamara says to place the bronzer at your cheekbones, not below. Placing it a little higher than is typical helps lift and liven up your face rather than dragging it down.

2. Highlighter

Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter is Tamara’s favorite, and it certainly looks amazing on her. It comes in tons of colors and acts like a real-life Instagram filter (even on mature skin). It illuminates without sparkle or shimmer.

According to Tamara, you should place your highlighter high on the cheekbone as well as the apple of the cheek. (When you were younger, you might’ve typically applied blush in this location.) The highlighter helps reflect light and lift the face.

3. Blush

Tamara uses Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush, which is a nice, bright pink. I will reiterate what I said above, however: if you’re not into powder, then you might try the Jones Road Miracle Balm in a pink or peach shade, like its Au Naturel hue.

For blush, forget the “smile and apply to the apple of your cheek” method! It works when you’re 20, but not so much when you’re 50. When you stop smiling, everything looks droopy. While I’m all for embracing your age, looking drooper than necessary is definitely not my jam.

Instead, Tamara demonstrates how to apply the blush high on the cheekbone and a little further back from the apple of the cheek. The end result brightens, lifts, and celebrates the over-50 face instead of emphasizing its not-so-lifted areas.

You Might Be Aging Yourself By Committing These 3 Makeup Mistakes–Here’s How To Fix Them https://www.suggest.com/common-makeup-mistakes-that-are-aging-you/2567597/ Mon, 02 Aug 2021 22:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2567597 Woman applying makeup

Before we begin, we want to let you know that we don’t think aging or looking older is bad. Honestly, we think it’s gorgeous. But, caking on the makeup isn’t always the most flattering look as we age.

Sure, when you were in your teens, wearing a lot of makeup made you feel more mature. It may have even fooled some folks into thinking you were a little older than you actually were. But if you’re still using the same makeup brands from years ago paired with the same techniques, it’s time to upgrade your routine.

Read on for makeup mistakes you should avoid when it comes to age.

Applying Heavy Eyeliner

Eyeliner draws attention to the eyes, making them appear larger and enhancing their shape. But a lot can go wrong when it comes to eyeliner application.

Applying eyeliner too heavily, using a pitch black liquid eyeliner or drawing sharp lines will quickly age your face. Same goes for applying eyeliner to only the lower lash line. These techniques may highlight fine lines around the eyes, drag them down and make your eyes appear smaller.

For a softer look, use a brown pencil or gel eyeliner only on the upper waterline. Diffuse it to rid of any sharp edges. If you just have to use eyeliner on the bottom, only add it to the butter corners of the eyes.

Choosing The Wrong Lip Liner

Makeup trends from the early years shouldn’t always come back. Especially when its a dark lip liner paired with a frosted lip gloss.

With that said, lip liner will never really go out of style, but just don’t make the mistake of wearing a super light lipstick with a bold liner.

Instead, opt for a lip liner that’s about a shade darker than your lipstick. To make your lips appear larger, you can even overdraw your lips a little after you’ve applied foundation. Just don’t go overboard.

Wearing Matte Foundation

Matte foundations tend to cling to your skin and accentuate lines and wrinkles. Yes, they typically provide full coverage, but they overall seem too heavy for most skin types. This is especially true for those with dry skin.

Instead, opt for a lightweight serum foundation. Serum foundations hydrate the skin, making it appear more youthful and moisturized. They also help even out your complexion, repair problem spots and balance out facial oils. And best of all, it looks natural and fresh.

We have a whole section called F That. It’s dedicated to ignoring what “they” tell you to do in your older age (or in some cases at any age), and instead do whatever the F you want. Previous topics have included covering your gray hair, dieting and  wearing a bra.

Still, I’m not immune to falling prey at times to societal pressures. I am guilty of, in the past, writing that older women should not wear sparkly or shimmery makeup because it settles in to lines.

Well I’m here to set the record straight, and I know I don’t need to tell you this but F that. Wear whatever shimmery or sparkly makeup you want, no matter your age. And if you need some inspiration, here are 7 women rocking seriously bold eye makeup—follow them and shop for some fun new hues below!

How to look happier when wearing lipstick (even if you have a downturned mouth) https://www.suggest.com/upturned-lip/2676511/ Tue, 06 Apr 2021 15:40:47 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/upturned-lip/2676511/

All mouths are different. Big, small, full lips, thin ones, upturned, downturned. They’re all beautiful. That said, anytime you add a bold lipstick, that natural shape will be emphasized, maybe even exaggerated.

That means if you have a naturally downturned mouth—which can can be the result of genes or gravity—adding a bright or dark color might might you look mad when you’re really not.

Makeup artist and beauty YouTuber Lisa Eldridge has a surprisingly easy solution, which, as you can see above, is quite effective. It involves products you most likely already have at home and you don’t need to be a licensed make up artist to make it happen.

The trick is in stopping short of the actual corners of your mouth when applying the lip color. The technique gives the illusion of more vertical and plump lip at rather than a very wide, thinner and downturned mouth. She also uses concealer to demarcate where the lip color will begin and end.

It’s pretty genius if you ask me.

You might also notice that in the after photo she’s wearing a bit of blush—make sure you watch the video to find out how she used the same lipstick on her cheeks!

And if you’re not into lipstick, there’s always face yoga. I’m intrigued… has anyone tried it?

I’ve included some red and otherwise bright lipsticks to shop below. Kosas and Ilia are two of my current favorite makeup brands for their non-toxicity and because they’re full of nourishing ingredients—so it’s like skincare and makeup in one. I’ve also included some Gucci because wow look at those cases!! I’ve also included some concealer brushes similar to the one Lisa uses in her video, as well as some concealer options (I just recently bought the Kosas one and can attest it is amazing, especially for over-50 skin!).

A cheeky trick that gives over-50 skin an immediate mini facelift https://www.suggest.com/a-cheeky-trick-that-gives-over-50-skin-an-immediate-mini-facelift/2676518/ Tue, 16 Mar 2021 23:15:55 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/a-cheeky-trick-that-gives-over-50-skin-an-immediate-mini-facelift/2676518/ This post may contain affiliate links. Colette Vanpaemel

Colette Vanpaemel, AKA @blondincontour is one of my favorite Instagram makeup artists to watch for makeup tips and tricks for over-50 skin.

This particular trick sort of threw me for a loop because her advice is to stop doing something I’ve been doing for forever.

When I first discovered cream blush, it was a revelation. I was a dedicated powder blush (and everything else) user after living a lifetime with oily skin. But I slowly realized that my skin was getting dryer and needed different types of products.

A dab of creamy pink color at the apple of my cheeks gave a youthful, natural look. And it was so easy. Even into my late 40s, the creamy texture worked well with my skin.

But lately, I look in the mirror after applying it and it just looks weird. Clownish and definitely not flattering. So I just stopped wearing any blush at all. But then I saw myself on video and I looked washed out and tired (Brighter lipstick may have also helped!)

So my eyes and ears perked up when I saw Colette’s video showing the difference between applying blush to the apples of the cheeks versus starting back further behind the line that begins below the center of the eye and blending back towards the ear.

Look at the difference between the two sides! I don’t know what magic is going on here, but I want it in my life.

Angie from Hot & Flashy agrees, and she has some of the best makeup tips out there for over 50 skin (you guys she’s 58).

Luckily it’s super easy to get this look. Here are some moisturizing, non-toxic cream blush options if you’re also in the market for the cheapest, easiest mini facelift ever.

In my younger days, I fake tanned, and in my younger younger days, I real tanned. I’ve always loved a sun-kissed look, but as the years passed, it became obvious that real tanning was out of the question, and I felt bronzer was aging.

Not so, according to veteran makeup artist to the stars (including Blondie and Christie Brinkley), Sandy Litner. Just because you’re over 50 doesn’t mean you should be  afraid of bronzer (she’s 74!).

“I use it on everyone over 50 because it warms up the skin in a natural way,” Litner tells Vogue. She sweeps Serge Lutens Complexion Perfector “under the cheekbone, down the sides of the nose, across the forehead, and under the jawline for a chiseled glow.”

Creating warmth is important for skin over 50, Litner says. She advises going a shade warmer with concealer or foundation rather than attempting to match it exactly to avoid a washed-out look. “If it’s too matchy-matchy, it can age you,” she tells Vogue. But don’t forget to blend it into the neck to erase any trace of a color differential.

Follow Litner on Instagram for makeup tips as well as a glimpse into her archive of glamorous photographs with the likes of Keith Richards, Andy Warhol, and Cheryl Tiegs, as well as her work with Brooke Shields, Elizabeth Hurley, Carol Alt and other legends.

Tracee Ellis Ross

When I was younger—honestly even as recently as my 40s—I was prone to breakouts, which made me both dependent on and afraid of foundation. I needed it to cover up my acne and resulting scars, but it clogged my pores and sometimes caused more breakouts.

As a 50-something adult, I don’t break out much anymore, or at least I didn’t before all this mask-wearing. But when I do get a blemish or two, it’s not the cystic nightmare of my youth, just a small spot that’s easily covered with a bit of concealer.

This is all to say that one of the unexpected perks of getting older has been not feeling the need to wear foundation. I rely on good skin products, a tinted oil, and occasional concealer to keep my skin and my lazy self happy and looking somewhat like a live human.

As does Tracee Ellis Ross, apparently—in the below video, she describes her skin, makeup and hair routine, which, notwithstanding a tremendous number of face oils and skincare concoctions, is pretty simple, especially in the makeup department.

Below is my slightly toned-down version of an easy, everyday no-foundation makeup routine. All of the products are cruelty-free and free of harmful ingredients, and most of the products have soothing, nourishing ingredients that will likely improve the quality of your skin.

NuFace platinum trinity

NuFace Trinity toning device, $299

This thing is expensive, but based on personal experience and many online reviews, it works to tighten and lift the skin on the face, particularly, I found, along the jawline. Perhaps you don’t care about your jawline and you probably shouldn’t. I’m still over here thinking about it and while surgery is not something I’m interested in, this thing has just enough effect to make me want to buy another one after I dropped mine on the tile floor and it stopped working. I do want to point out that several amazon reviewers complained that their device stopped working after a short time and that the customer service wasn’t great. I will say mine worked for a good three years before I dropped it, and a new one will be a holiday gift to myself. Pro tip: you do not have to use the expensive gel they sell with the product. Any gel will work—I use an aloe one.

Lesse face oil

Lesse Ritual  Balancing Turmeric & Sea Minerals, $70

If you start with the best skin possible, you don’t need a lot of makeup. Use this light, gentle face oil after cleansing and your skin will be nourished and ready for what’s to come. It hydrates, evens tone and reduces sun damage with turmeric root extract, calendula flower extract, algae (seaweed) extract and many more all-organic ingredients.

Peter Thomas Roth eye gel

Peter Thomas Roth Hyaluronic Cloud Hydrating Eye Gel, $42

Now that I’ve entered my fifth decade, my eyes are crazy puffy in the morning. Eye gel, which I apply first thing whether I’m leaving the house or not, helps.

Kosas face oil

Kosas tinted face oil, $42

So they actually call this product a foundation, but I promise you it is not a foundation. It’s unique in that it is an oil that dries a bit like a powder. It provides some but not a ton of coverage, and the fact that it’s actually an oil make it not really a foundation in my book. It will even out your skin tone, but it won’t completely cover more pronounced pigmentation or acne scars. Another aspect that makes it not a foundation is that it doesn’t play well with other products. You can’t really build on it like many people like to do with foundations.

But it’s nourishing, organic and cruelty free, so if you’re going for a natural, almost no-makeup look, I recommend giving it a shot. I apply it up to my eye area so it also covers under-eye discoloration and I usually don’t bother to use a concealer except for maybe in the inner corners of my eyes. I also use it with a touch of cream blush—it won’t work great with a powder.

I haven’t yet tried Kosas’ main competitor, Ilia tinted face oil, but I plan to and will update you on how it goes.

Kosas Revealer Concealer

Kosas Revealer Concealer, $28

If you need extra coverage under your eyes or to cover a blemish, use a dab or two of this.

Ilia multi stick

Ilia Multi-Stick, $34

A touch of this on the apples of your cheeks, lips and eyelids is all you need to finish off a no-foundation look.

supergoop defense refresh

Supergoop Defense Refresh, $14

Since the Kosas face oil doesn’t contain sunscreen, it’s important to apply sunscreen separately (the Ilia version has sunscreen, so I’m eager to try it). But since, like I mentioned, the face oil doesn’t play well with other products, this spray is the answer. It’s not just SPF 50, but also a makeup-setting spray. I tried my sister-in-law’s over the summer and was immediately sold. The scent is divine, it’s easy to apply, and it doesn’t leave a residue.

Do you have any favorite products for a no-foundation makeup look? We would love to hear about them in the comments.

Watching These Winged Eyeliner How-To Videos Gives Me So Much Hope I Too Can Master The Technique https://www.suggest.com/watching-these-how-to-videos-for-winged-eyeliner-on-mature-skin-gives-me-so-much-anxiety/2676679/ Thu, 05 Mar 2020 08:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/watching-these-how-to-videos-for-winged-eyeliner-on-mature-skin-gives-me-so-much-anxiety/2676679/ A middle aged woman applying eyeliner

I adore a cat eye a la Sophia Loren. That is, I adore witnessing the look on others. But I’ve never been able to achieve the look myself, which has sent me down many how-to video rabbit holes hoping that one will be my winged eyeliner Rosetta Stone.

What typically happens is I decide to try to learn this challenging look—and all of these YouTubers seem to agree that it really is one of the hardest looks to achieve when it comes to makeup—minutes before I’m scheduled to arrive at an event, which leads to intense anxiety, ruining whatever makeup I’ve already applied, and usually a hot flash (or three).

But it’s good to know it’s not just me. Take Samantha of Stung by Samantha, for instance. She is *really good* at makeup, and even she is sweating by the end of her tutorial—which, by the way, is very much worth watching until the end not just for her technique, but also for her on-point rant about age appropriateness.

What this all means is that I’ve watched a whole lot of winged eyeliner videos, and these are the six best I’ve found for mature and/or hooded eyes. They give me hope that maybe, one day, I too can rock a Sophia Loren cat eye.

Color the World lipstick

Photo via Color the WorldWhen Instagram’s algorithm fed me Color the World lipstick, it knew what it was doing. Obviously it knows I’m over 50 and that I’ve purchased other makeup and weirdly-seamed velvet socks and that reusable wax food-wrap stuff through the social media service. It doesn’t know my varying degrees of satisfaction with each, but I don’t think it cares.

Many things about the Color the Wold ad drew me in, not the least of which was the do-gooder angle. Each shade is associated with a specific cause, from combating anxiety and depression to ‘books for Africa’ to brain injury to sea turtles. Then there was the recyclable paper dispensers, the focus on older women, plus the product is vegan and hand-poured.

I also really loved the color as it appeared in the ad. It reminded me of MAC’s Twig (formerly known as Twiggy) that I wore back in the day, but with the increased amount of pink I’d always wished for. To top it all off, a discount was offered, so, attempting to reign in my impulses, I purchased a single tube in the Flawless color.

Color the world lipstick

Strong Women Pack, $43, down from $63

When it arrived in the mail, my 7-year-old daughter opened the package and unbeknownst to me ran outside to play apparently thinking it was for her, or that it was O.K. for her to play with it, or she was just hoping I wouldn’t notice. Who knows what goes on in that kid’s brain. When I finally got my hands on it, the lipstick was broken off at the base and nowhere to be found.

There was a tiny amount of product in the recessed area where the lipstick attaches to the dispenser, which I scooped out with my fingernail and smeared on my lips. I liked the color and consistency enough to continue with that struggle for the next week. When there was no more to be scraped, and after a stern conversation with my daughter about not opening my packages, I ordered another tube of Flawless, again at the $14 price.

The ability to simply apply the lipstick from the tube instead of digging it out with my fingernail felt luxurious. I also continued to enjoy the color. I find it very moisturizing, but not so slippery that it moves around and ends up in the creases around my lips. It’s pleasantly shiny, I find, and I’ve received many compliments on the color.

It’s definitely not a long-wearing stain, but it does last long enough to keep me satisfied, and it does slightly stain my lips so that after I eat a hint of color remains. And it doesn’t dry out my lips, which every single other lipstick I’ve ever worn totally does. Even gloss does that, why?

Anyway, I ordered another color, Independent, which has a bit more purple than Flawless. I’m loving that one enough that I’m currently poised with the Neutrals Bundle, which is marked down 30 percent, in my cart.

I found some quite negative reviews on Makeup Alley, and to be honest I was surprised! It scores just 2.1 out of 5. Most of the complaints seem to be about the colors.

I will say that both the Flawless and Independent shades seems to appear brighter outside. The Color the World website also has a color guide you might want to check out if you are tempted to buy. Check it out and let us know how you make out if you try it!

P.S. This post is not sponsored, and I did not receive free product.

Nikol Johnson
Photo via Fresh Beauty Studio

As we grow older, many of us shy away from make-up—especially bright, shimmery, or shiny makeup—for fear of it settling into and highlighting fine lines and wrinkles.

But that’s a mistake, says Nikol Johnson, a popular YouTube makeup artist and author of Beauty Reinvented. She recently put together a series of makeup tutorials for women from 50 to 80. She’s not recommending neon eye shadow or fuchsia lips necessarily, but little pops of color and shimmer can go a long way towards enlivening your face, even one with mature skin.

Her model for this tutorial is her very own mother. I was shocked when she pulled out a shimmery set of shadows for her eyes, and applied subtly sparkly gloss on her lips.

The effect is anything but aging. Though the makeup is a bit colorful, shimmery and shiny, the hues are understand and it’s applied with a light hand, creating a soft but awake and alive look.

“Being in your seventies you can still wear gloss, you can still wear shadow with a little bit of sheen,” Johnson says. “You want to look alive, you want to bring light to your face. You don’t want to dull everything out and just do everything completely nude.”

Johnson’s mother confesses at the end of the video that she typically sticks to matte makeup for fear of making herself look older with sparklier products. But it’s fair to say that when she sees her daughter’s handiwork, she’s convinced to take her advice.

Watch the video above to see for yourself.

Johnson also uses metallics on her model in her fifties which you can check out above—also don’t miss her surprising blush technique.  And below are the tutorials for women in their sixties and eighties.

Lastly, below are some of the products I’m dying to try after hearing Johnson rave about them.

Nikol Cosmetics bottled blond eye shadow palette, $40

Chanel Rouge Coco Gloss in Bourgoisie, $30

Nikol Cosmetics Eye/lip primer, $24

La Mer foundation, $120

We have long held the point of view that less is more when it comes to makeup on mature skin. Foundation settles into wrinkles, eyeshadow makes eyelids look crepey, lipstick runs into those fine vertical lines—or so we thought.

Recently, we’ve encountered some over-50 women on Instagram who are so talented with makeup that they’ve made us rethink our minimalist ways.

The before-and-afters don’t lie. Excellent lighting aside, it’s clean that skin is more even, dewy, and glowing after these artists get to work. Eyes are opened-up and even lifted in their talented hands. And not that it’s our ultimate goal to look younger, but there’s no doubt makeup is taking years off in these cases.

We’re still not talking heavy Kardashian-style maquillage. But just the right amount of eye color, lipstick, foundation, brow pencil, etc. in the hands of these talented artists can work wonders, as you can clearly see below.

Who knows, we may even try eyeliner again! Do you have any mature-skin makeup tips? We’d love to hear about them in the comments.

This beauty is a Maskcara Beauty artist, which seems like a smart career path considering this. Colette has the best bangs, and her tutorials are easy to follow with gorgeous results.

Lori Aldous

Lori is another Maskcara Beauty artist, and we’re really into her straightforward approach and how-tos on specific challenges like mature eye shadow, filling in brows, plus how to apply highlighter and contouring on mature skin.

We are completely mesmerized by this feed. The makeup is definitely a bit more dramatic than we’re comfortable with at least on a daily basis, but we love this grandmother’s willingness to go for it when it comes to color. And how does she pose in precisely the same position for every single photo??
