If you’re over 40, you’ve probably had your fill of fashion rules. You likely grew up following certain style norms: Don’t mix black and brown, no white after Labor Day, and absolutely no mixing prints!

Well, we’re over all the rules and regulations when it comes to style, especially with regard to those guidelines on how you should be dressing at 30, 40, 50, etc. Fashion is all about self-expression, and that includes pairing together whatever colors you choose. Now, designer Ripley Rader is taking on one common outdated fashion “law.”

It’s long been the rule that navy (or any shade of blue) and black shouldn’t be worn together. Even though this “rule” has been debunked over and over again with countless chic ensembles that have combined the two beautifully, it’s still a widely-held belief. But Rader believes in the pairing so much, she even devoted one of her Instagram styling sessions to the topic.

She kicked off the reel by talking about her personal love of the navy/black color combo. “I grew up in the South,” she explained, “and they would always say it looked like a bruise, which I think is funny. But I love it, and I think it’s a really chic combination.”

In the video, she wore a pair of black wide-leg ankle-length pants with a navy turtleneck, a black oversized blazer, and white kicks. For dressier occasions, she demonstrated how to elevate the outfit by changing out the white sneakers for black heeled boots or black patent pumps. The outfit looks simple yet put-together and exudes confidence.

The same can be said for many outfits that have employed the same color pairing. Here are some of our favorites.

From the ruffled navy top down to the black combat boots and everything in between, we are smitten with this fun look!

This outfit screams comfort without losing any style points. The pleated skirt, comfy sweater, and white sneakers are pulled together with a fab Coach belt bag.

These bright blue trousers make for the perfect bold pop of color in this black-and-blue ensemble.

We love a good neutral-colored combo. A caramel-colored sweater draped over a navy top with black trousers and white Veja sneakers looks casual and amazingly chic.

Navy-and-black oversized everything? Especially when you need to bundle up for those cold, dreary winter days? Yes, please!

Get An Instantly Slimmer Silhouette With This Easy Style Hack https://www.suggest.com/wearing-metallic-fabric-to-look-slimmer/2721815/ Sat, 04 Feb 2023 12:30:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2721815 Woman searching through a rack of clothing while shopping

There are a number of tips and tricks that can help you achieve an hourglass figure or slimming effect. For instance, dressing according to the golden ratio is recommended to make anyone look taller and slimmer, regardless of weight.

Monochromatic outfits are another great way to make yourself appear longer and leaner. Many of us love our all-black ensembles or other dark colors to smooth over the areas we want a little more coverage.

While most of these tips focus on color and style, the fabrics you wear can also have a profound effect on your silhouette—and this goes beyond how stretchy, thin, or lightweight they might be. In this case, we’re talking about wearing a very specific fabric.

Metallic fabric is eye-catching in a way that, with the proper styling, can produce an instant slimming effect. We know flashy metallic may not be the first fabric you think of when it comes to hiding unwanted curves, but it makes sense when you think about it.

A metallic texture plays on the principle of light and shadow to guide the eye. Similar to the way light is used in paintings and makeup to draw the eye to some areas and away from others (think: highlighting and contouring), metallics can reflect light to visually slim your figure.

Using the right combination of metallic pieces with solid-colored basics will help you achieve this amazing sculpting effect. We’ve rounded up some of the best ways to incorporate metallics into your wardrobe.

Metallic Jackets

Try pairing a metallic jacket with a neutral top and bottom to highlight the glam. You can see below how the shorter, structured jacket with a looser bottom helps cinch the waist and flatten the tummy, instantly resulting in a slimmer silhouette.

Levi’s Faux-Leather Moto Jacket

  • Available in sizes XS-XL.
  • Fits true to size.

On the other hand, you could choose a longer jacket to elongate your figure and make the metallic fabric the defining feature of your ensemble.

VENUS Sequin Mesh Long Jacket

$69 Shop Now at VENUS
  • Available in sizes XS-3X.
  • Multiple colors available (Rose Gold and Pink).
  • Fits true to size.

Metallic Skirts

Metallic skirts are super in this season, but to achieve maximum va va voom, opt for a high-waisted A-line skirt. The shiny, flowy movement on bottom will help create a beautifully balanced appearance.

Metallic Pants

We’ve also noticed some modern iterations of the fierce glam rock pants from the ’70s and ’80s. While embracing similar heavy metal hues, this high-shine trend kicks tackiness to the curb. Consider balancing out your look by pairing a wide leg with a more figure-hugging top.

Alternatively, you can match a pair of skinny metallic bottoms with a black top and/or long jacket to slim your upper half.

Express High-Waisted Metallic Skinny Jeans

$80 Shop Now at Express
  • Available in sizes 00-14.
  • Runs small, consider sizing up.

No matter what style you choose, the key to making metallic fabrics look chic is to invest in quality-made pieces. Opt for leather or faux leather metallics, silks or satins, and as much as possible, avoid polyester.

Can Math Make You More Fashionable? The Results Say Yes https://www.suggest.com/rule-of-thirds-in-fashion/2719891/ Sat, 28 Jan 2023 21:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2719891 L: Kate Middleton dressed according to the rule of thirds at the Design Museum in 2022, R: Sarah Jessica Parker dressed according to the rule of thirds at the Hocus Pocus 2 premiere in 2022

Many masterpiece paintings and fascinating designs throughout history have owed their visual appeal to something called the “golden ratio.”

Also called the divine proportion, the mathematical ratio of 1:1.618 contributes to beauty, balance, and harmony by arranging subjects along intersecting axes and by dividing lines and shapes aesthetically.

Aside from its widespread use in art, this mathematical concept is also prevalent in fashion. Known for her impeccable style and a keen eye for balance, Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel was credited with saying, “Fashion is architecture: It is a matter of proportions.”

Chanel’s sentiments have been echoed by many other fashion designers who adapt the golden ratio to balance proportions between garments, creating stunning symmetry within their collections.

The Rule Of Thirds

Following the exact golden ratio of 1:1.618 isn’t easy particularly when it comes to fashion. Thankfully, you can use the rule of thirds to achieve the same sense of balance and harmony. A ratio of 2:3 or 3:5, although not quite the divine proportion, is close enough for fashion designers.

Applying the rule of thirds to your everyday wardrobe makes any outfit appear cohesive and well-balanced. For example, a 2:3 ratio between the upper and lower body is a more natural visual division of space than a 1:1 ratio. The latter divides the body in half and results in a boxy, frumpy silhouette.

The simplest way to accomplish this is to divide your body into thirds and create a visual break along one of those lines. This might be where your top and bottom meet, where a layer ends, or where you place a belt.

A quick way to apply the rule of thirds is to tuck in the front of your shirt, a method known as the French tuck, which instantly splits your outfit into 1/3 on top and 2/3 on bottom. You can achieve a similar effect using a crop top paired with high-rise pants.

Always the classic style icon, Kate Middleton is a master of this concept. The incorporation of a belt was a subtle but effective visual break in her eye-catching teal midi dress designed by Edeline Lee. Not only does it cinch her in at the waist, but it helps to elongate her figure.

For an inverse example of this concept, see Sarah Jessica Parker’s look at the Hocus Pocus 2 world premiere. A pair of satin pink cropped pants (a style she is very fond of) helps balance the length of her long floral tunic.

To sum things up, incorporating the rule of thirds into your wardrobe can be a total style game changer. Prepare to reel in compliments like never before.

I Am Not Too Old For This Outfit—Why Are Other Women Judging Me So Harshly? https://www.suggest.com/dressing-your-age-inspiring-video/2717439/ Tue, 24 Jan 2023 22:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2717439 Influencer Rachel Peru discusses ageism coming from other women

It’s no secret that women are judged for what they wear. And as women get older, the “rules” seem to become ever more stringent. Women are expected to “act their age” and adhere to a milder, primmer aesthetic—it’s ageism at its worst.

But Rachel Peru is not having it. The model, influencer, and podcast host recently shared an Instagram post featuring a video for which she received some pretty nasty responses. And she’s a model of how to respond when comments get ugly.

In the post, she played a reel she had previously posted on Facebook in which she shared her outfit for going out on a Friday night. She looked fabulous in a longline bralette underneath a black velvet blazer, pants from Zara, and Karen Millen nude pumps.

When she posted the outfit video online, she received hundreds of negative, ageist comments including some real gems: ”Don’t like the bra look for her age,” followed by, “Will someone give Nan her medication, she’s playing dress up again.” And of course the favorite of age-shamers, “[She’s] too old for this outfit.”

It’s awful when those sorts of comments come from men, but it’s not particularly unexpected. What really bothered Peru was that most of the negative comments on Facebook seemed to come from other women.

“I’m thick-skinned, and I certainly don’t get dressed in the morning to please others,” she said. But she asked that women stop shaming other women. “Women do not have to conform to any dress code because of their age, and we shouldn’t let other women stigmatize or shame us because we want to dress in a different way.”

Perhaps Peru shouldn’t have been so surprised by her fellow female shamers. Dr. Joyce Benenson, a lecturer in human evolutionary biology at Harvard University has studied competition and judgment among women for more than three decades, and her studies show that women are hard-wired for this behavior.

“Within the female community, girls reduce competition by demanding equality and punishing those who openly attempt to attain more than others,” Benenson wrote in a 2013 study published in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B. Sounds a bit like the plot of Mean Girls, doesn’t it?

But just because we may be predisposed to mean-girl ways doesn’t mean we can’t take a step back, think before we act (or comment), and over time change our behavior. Several kind commenters on Peru’s post proved it’s possible.

One commenter said, “Stunning outfit. Rachel you look amazing.” While another simply said, “Wow, you look fab.”

Peru suggested we go into the new year being a little bit kinder to one another. And when the judgers inevitably judge, she encouraged her followers to not let our age, or other’s opinions, hold us back.

You’d Be Surprised By How Few Items Of Clothing You Can Buy Per Year To Comply With The Paris Agreement https://www.suggest.com/paris-agreement-guidelines-for-clothing-consumption/2716759/ Mon, 23 Jan 2023 22:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2716759 Folded clothing with paper earth on top of them, illustration of sustainable fashion

Move over, Paris Fashion Week: A 2022 report from Berlin’s Hot or Cool Institute is swinging the fashion world’s focus toward the Paris Agreement. The report analyzes the fashion industry’s carbon footprint when it comes to manufacturing and consumption. And unfortunately, the findings fall woefully short of the agreement’s goal to combat climate change.

But if you love regularly updating your wardrobe, don’t despair; the report doesn’t condemn all clothes shopping. But they do have a yearly cap on how much we should be buying (plus some tips for stretching this allowance farther).

Fashion’s Role In Climate Change

The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty adopted in 2015 that aims to limit global warming to “well below 2, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels.” Meanwhile, the fashion sector is well on its way to doubling its carbon emissions by 2030.

Rising carbon emissions reflect a changing fashion industry that prioritizes speed and quantity over sustainability and quality. Earth.Org reports that of the 100 billion garments produced yearly, 92 million tons end up in landfills. If this trend continues, that number could end up closer to 134 million tons by the end of the decade.

Being Satisfied With Sufficiency

Of course, consumer efforts to reduce global carbon emissions can only go so far in the wake of corporate manufacturing. But the report does present some feasible options the individual shopper can try, like following a “sufficiency lifestyle.”

The report defines this as habits and behaviors “that follow the choice out of free will to limit expenditure on consumer goods and services, and to cultivate non-materialistic sources of satisfaction and meaning.” Or to put it simply: buy less—and when you do buy, buy better.

Assuming we implement no other solution at any stage of the garment life cycle (more on that later), the report finds that the highest-income countries would need to reduce their garment consumption by up to 75% to achieve the Paris Agreement’s 1.5-degree reduction target. What, exactly, does that mean for your shopping habits?

Dressing For The Paris Agreement

The magic number is five.

According to the report, limiting the purchase of new garments to five items per person per year would allow consumption levels to fall in line with the Paris Agreement’s end goal.

Don’t think you can manage only buying five new pieces of clothing a year? You’re not alone, and there are other steps you can take to offset your closet’s carbon footprint so you can feel better about buying a little more.

For example, extending the life of a garment by just nine months can reduce its carbon footprint by 25%. Washing your clothing in cold water and avoiding one out of every three washes also minimizes your carbon footprint in terms of energy, detergent, and water used.

Additionally, the report suggests buying secondhand clothes and responsibly disposing of used garments by recycling or upcycling. However, it emphasizes that reducing clothing consumption to five items per year would have a larger impact than all the other solutions combined.

While this type of reduction might take some getting used to, we’re planning to use this as an excuse to invest in timeless, high-quality pieces to stretch our five yearly clothing items a bit farther—care to join us?

Real Fur Is Being Sold As Faux Fur—Here’s How You Can Spot The Difference https://www.suggest.com/real-fur-sold-as-faux-fur-tips-to-tell-difference/2716691/ Sun, 22 Jan 2023 17:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2716691 A rack of fur coats

Mink, chinchilla, fox, and other fur coats were once a sign of status and wealth. But over the past few decades, real fur has (thankfully) fallen out of favor with the rise of animal rights advocacy.

As a result, manufacturers have tried to simulate the look of real fur, both to fool consumers and to help consumers fool their friends. The practice has been almost too successful because it’s nearly impossible to tell them apart. As a matter of fact, some manufacturers have begun presenting real fur as faux.

As many people steer clear of real fur for moral and ethical reasons, this deceitful practice is a real issue. How can you spot the difference?

The Humane Society’s Findings

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) ran tests on multiple brands and found that many were selling “faux fur” items that were actually made with raccoon dog pelts. This revelation came following a disturbing video that surfaced back in 2005 of the animal being skinned alive in a Chinese fur market.

Every year, millions of raccoon dogs are raised and killed for their pelts, a fact that prompted the Humane Society to look into where these pelts were actually going and what they were being used for. That investigation led to the HSUS’s discovery that the pelts were sometimes turned into clothing items and sold under the guise of being faux fur, as well as pelts from other animals.

Faux fur comes with its own set of controversies. The fake fur material is made up of petroleum, the harmful environmental impacts of which have some environmentalists saying it’s not any better than real fur. And mislabeling is actually quite common when it comes to garments with fur trim, especially in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

How To Tell If It’s Real Or Fake

With faux fur being so realistic, it can be hard to tell which material you’re getting. But here are some ways to check.

1. Burn It

This obviously isn’t an option while you’re shopping, but it’s a great technique to test a piece of clothing you already own. Simply trim a few hairs and set them on fire (as safely as possible, of course).

Faux fur will melt in a sticky way and then cool to form hard plastic balls, which will probably also give off a plasticky smell. Real fur simply singes when you burn it.

2. Don’t Make Assumptions About Price

What might be most surprising of all is that the real-fur products being passed off as fake fur are actually sometimes sold at lower prices. Because most people expect real fur to be more expensive than the synthetic stuff, this has caused some confusion.

Fur from farmed animals, like raccoon dogs, is sometimes cheaper than faux fur due to the declined demand for real pelts. In fact, the HSUS found real fur parading as faux in items as expensive as $1495 and from designer brands such as Michael Kors, Burberry, and Marc Jacobs.

3. Examine The Tips Of The Fur

Humane Society International spokesperson Wendy Higgins told The Guardian that another tip for telling the difference between real and faux fur is to simply examine the tips of the hair. In real fur, the tips will taper and have pointed ends, while faux fur hairs (which are cut by the manufacturer) will appear blunt.

4. Examine The Base

Another thing to look for is how the hair is attached, so you’ll first need to part the hair to conduct this inspection. Faux fur will have a material woven backing, while real animal fur will have a leathery backing since it’s attached to the animal’s skin. You should also keep an eye out for hair length. Faux fur tends to have a uniform length, while hairs on real fur will have varying lengths.

5. Avoid Buying Online

Because it renders you unable to inspect the piece in person first, avoid buying fur or fur-lined clothing online. European Union regulations state that clothing with fur should clearly state that the piece includes “non-textile parts of animal origin” on the label. However, keep in mind that this rule doesn’t apply to online product descriptions.

6. When In Doubt, Leave It On The Shelf

Even with all these tips, some faux fur sold today is so convincing it’s impossible to tell it isn’t real. There’s also the possibility that it actually is real. If you’re still in doubt about whether or not a fur is fake, it’s best to be safe than sorry and just leave it on the shelf.

If You Loved Moon Boots As A Kid, You’ll Be Happy To Know The Grown-Up Versions Are Just As Fun https://www.suggest.com/modern-colorful-moon-boots-for-adults/2714953/ Mon, 16 Jan 2023 21:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2714953 A pair of silver and a pair of rainbow Moon Boots

Remember Moon Boots?! If you’re drawing a blank, they’re the puffy, space exploration-inspired snow boots that were popular throughout the ’70s and ’80s. Giancarlo Zanatta, an Italian entrepreneur, was inspired by the Apollo 11 moon landing and fashioned his footwear after the boots worn on that mission by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

These boots have been an off-and-on trend for decades, thanks to their legendary look and functionality. They’re perfect for hitting the slopes and partaking in après-ski activities, but they’re also great as just an everyday boot when the weather gets chilly.

I loved my rainbow Moon Boots when I was a kid and wore them constantly. Now as an adult, I still have a very similar pair of gray Moon Boots.

While Moon Boots never really went anywhere, and they’ve been a constant for many who live in colder temps, they’ve recently made their way back onto the fashion scene. Celebs from Mariah Carey to Dua Lipa have been spotted wearing them, while major designers like Gucci and Prada have come up with their own spins on the style.

These modern iterations are available in every imaginable color, style, and fabric. Here are a few of our favorites.

Available in silver or platinum, these original Moon Boots are nothing less than iconic. With a cushioned footbed, rubber outsole, and round toe, these boots are comfy and bold. (Note that it’s best to size up because these boots tend to run smaller than traditional size scales.)

These gold metallic Moon Boots are insulated for warmth and feature full-length wraparound lacing for stability. The rubber soles provide even more support, and the soft lining allows for breathability and molds to your foot for extra comfort. These boots are great for their original purpose, playing in the snow, but are also sure to make a fashion statement.

We’re all about fuzzy, warm, cozy boots in the winter, and these Moon Boot-esque kicks by Steve Madden fit the bill. Along with faux fur and microsuede uppers, these boots also have lace-up closures and rubber outsoles.

Be still my heart! Last but CERTAINLY not least are these rainbow lace-up Moon Boots, aka the boots of every ’80s kid’s dreams. Walk down memory lane in style with gorgeous rainbow striping on the sides and classic logo lettering on the heels. They’re the perfect blend of trendiness and nostalgia and are sure to give you that feeling of being the coolest kid in school.

Would You Wear Horseshoe Jeans? This Oddly Chic Denim Is Selling Out Fast https://www.suggest.com/horseshoe-jeans-trend/2713898/ Wed, 11 Jan 2023 22:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2713898 Pictures of two models wearing horseshoe jeans with a horseshoe graphic backdrop

Some interesting pants trends have emerged in the past couple of years that go way beyond the skinny vs. boot cut or low rise vs. high rise debates. And though some might think of trends as a young person’s game, we’re here for the ones that speak to women in midlife—i.e., those that are comfortable, flattering, fashion-forward, and high-quality.

Take, for example, the return of cargo pants—a throwback to our youth. Then there was the super-elongating split hem, and the slightly weird but very fun double high-waisted jeans

We now submit horseshoe jeans, which might at first seem odd, but they’re selling out and we’re not that surprised. After all, they come from Citizens of Humanity, a brand beloved for pushing the envelope with edgy styles and always delivering premium quality. (Also: Yes they had a horseshoe on the pocket but remove those early aughts low-rise Rock and Republic [R.I.P.] jeans from your mind right now.)

RELATED: Tracee Ellis Ross’ Legging Styling Hack Makes These Comfy Pants Look Chic AF

Citizens of Humanity horseshoe jeans come in a variety of washes including dark blue denim, black, and white. The cut provides an exaggerated, ultra-wide, curved leg silhouette via strategic seams, plus a raw-edge hem for a “perfectly worn look.”

They’re made with 100% cotton rigid denim and have a slightly cropped length, a button fly closure, and a five-pocket design.

The appeal of these jeans is that they’re fitted at the waist, narrower at the ankle, and extremely generous in the thigh, making them easy to move in despite not having any stretch.

You could style them any which way you choose: half-tuck a sweater, pair them with a cropped jacket, or dress them up with a silk blouse. Wear them with heels or heeled boots, or dress them down with sneakers for a day of running errands. However you choose to wear them, these jeans are not for the shrinking violet and will definitely get you noticed.

Some sizes are sold out at various retailers (as of press time, Shopbop had the best selection). Some outlets have started a waitlist for some sizes, and the reviews explain why.

“These jeans are so unique and FABULOUSLY cool. Perfect for dressing up or down. High quality denim … I have a lot of fashion plans with these. Does not disappoint at all!!!!!” one reviewer shared.

Another wrote, “Y’all when I tell you these jeans are AMAZING, believe that. The fit, feel, length and comfort. A little pricey but definitely worth it!!”

A third shared, “I saw these on another person and couldn’t wait to get them for myself. I waited awhile because of the price but they are worth every penny.”

The jeans do run a bit large, so don’t be afraid to order a size smaller than normal if you’d like them to be more fitted at the waist. And even if you’re petite, you can roll them up—or even just cut them off.

As one fan noted, these jeans are worth a try because they are “so unique and different.”

Made with super soft leather, these square-toe booties have a heel height of 3.5 inches. Pair them with a cozy knitted midi-dress and a leather clutch. The brand recommends sizing up, as these booties aren’t available in half sizes.

Easily dress up a simple pair of jeans and a basic top or pair them with your go-to little black dress for an instant statement-making look.

Keep it classic with a long trench over a neutral sweater, a mini houndstooth skirt, and these faux fur calf-length boots. Or get a little edgier and pair the booties with a neon-colored sweater and black leggings.

Featuring a block heel, pointed toe, and faux suede material, these cozy boots are the perfect choice for date night or winter parties.

You’re Tying Your Coat Belt Wrong—Here’s How To Look Like You Have A Personal Stylist https://www.suggest.com/how-to-tie-coat-belt-two-ways/2713133/ Tue, 10 Jan 2023 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2713133 Jessica Wang showcases two ways to tie a coat belt

Winter is here, and when Jack Frost comes to town, it’s time to don our coziest outerwear. Most winter coats—whether it’s a hefty wool number, a minimalist cashmere trench, or a trendy teddy coat—include a belt that must be tied. It seems easy enough to tie a simple knot, but why does it always look a bit awkward?

If your goal is to look polished in your coat—rather than like you’re wearing a bathrobe and Netflix is asking whether you’re still watching—we have you covered.

Jessica Wang, a fashion influencer with millions of followers on Instagram and TikTok, is adored for her styling expertise. The fashion maven offers genius tips for everything from skincare to beauty to viral TikTok must-haves, and she is here to help you tie your coat belt the right way.

RELATED: This Elegant Scarf-Tying Method Has Leveled Up My Outerwear Game

Wang recently shared two simple methods to stylishly tie a coat belt. With just a little extra effort, you’ll look like you have your own personal stylist every time you head outdoors. And the methods are seriously so easy, you’ll have the techniques down pat in no time.

Method One

  1. Position both belt ends at the front of the coat.
  2. Crisscross your belt, while pushing one end of the belt upward to make a loop.
  3. Secure the belt by wrapping the opposite end (tail) around that upward loop.
  4. Pull the tail through the loop and secure it for a stylish knot.

Method Two

  1. Position both belt ends at the front of the coat.
  2. Make one knot at one end of the belt by wrapping a loose loop around your hand and guiding the tail through.
  3. Insert the opposite side of your belt through the loop and pull to secure.

Whichever method you choose, your waist will be cinched chicly and the result will appear effortless, even though you watched some videos to get the look.

From Cargo Pants To Double-Waisted Jeans, A Look Back At The Most Memorable Pants Trends Of 2022 https://www.suggest.com/top-pants-trends-of-the-year/2704059/ Tue, 27 Dec 2022 15:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2704059 Cargo pants from Ganni, split hem pants from Express, and double waist jeans from Forever 21

Fashion generally goes through cycles, some of which are more tolerable than others. The popularity of different pants styles is no exception. I’ve witnessed my fair share of trends die and be reborn; meanwhile, I’ve been sitting comfortably in my skinny jeans for about a decade now.

But even I can feel the tides turning, and I’ve begun to hear the siren song of different styles of pants. What was once old will be new again, and high-waisted, wide-legged denim is all the rage now.

Here at Suggest, we’ve covered a slew of notable pants trends in the past year. There are a few we hope will stick around for the long haul (love the linen look), but we’re hoping others will stay in 2022 (smell ya later, double-waisted jeans!).

Let’s take a look back at some of our favorites, along with a couple of questionable styles that emerged (or reemerged) this year.

Linen Pants

It bears repeating that we hope linen pants are here to stay. We love the undone, relaxed look they give us and their ability to keep us cool in the hottest months of the year. Celebs like Meghan Markle and Jennifer Garner were spotted wearing this trend in 2022, so we’re hopeful this trend will come back around in the summertime for years to come.

Cargo Pants

These aren’t your ex-boyfriend’s old cargo pants. You know the ones, super baggy with frayed edges and holes galore—those can stay in the ’90s grunge scene where they belong. But we’ve gotta admit, these updated takes on cargo pants are pretty dang cute. They have functional pockets for women (what a concept!) and come in an array of variations: joggers, classic straight-leg, linen, and countless more.

Split-Hem Pants

Split-hem pants seemed to come out of nowhere, but everyone from Tracee Ellis Ross to Margot Robbie sported the trend in the past year. The style can be dressed up or down and, rumor has it, it can even make you look taller. These pants elongate the leg while giving you a chance to show off your shoes. They’re available in styles that make them suitable for everything from the gym to the office and everything in between.

Double-Waisted Jeans

If you’re into trying something different and buttons that go on for days, then the double-waisted jean trend might be right up your alley. These pants make it look as though you’re wearing jeans on top of your jeans, but if you’re into that, we say go for it! We, on the other hand, had very mixed feelings about wearing two waistbands at once.

Whale Tails

This highly-controversial trend from the early 2000s is apparently back, but luckily I haven’t spotted anyone wearing it out and about … yet. Allowing your g-string or thong to peek over your waistline is provocative, to be sure. But the recurrence of this trend means that low-rise pants are also back, and I can hear the collective groan of everyone who never wanted to see those again. We’ll be over here in our high-waisted pants for the foreseeable future, thanks.

This Elegant Scarf-Tying Method Has Leveled Up My Outerwear Game https://www.suggest.com/scarf-tying-method-tutorial/2703729/ Sat, 24 Dec 2022 22:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2703729 Different stages of tying a scarf

Winter is here, which means it’s officially scarf season. Months of cold weather provide the perfect opportunity to cycle through your scarf collection, whether it’s stocked with chunky knits or classic cashmere. But of course, this season does present one tangled dilemma: how to tie the scarf.

You might scoff at the simplicity of the question, but I’ve wrestled with my fair share of bunched-up, twisted, or loosey-goosey scarves, and it’s an even bigger drag in a bulky, arm-mobility-reducing winter coat. Luckily, the good ol’ internet has offered a solution to my tricky scarf situation, and it might help you, too.

After discovering this elegant way to tie a winter scarf, I don’t think I’ll ever return to my former ways again. Prepare to level up your outerwear game for good.

RELATED: To Fold Or To Hang? This Is The Best Way To Store Your Sweaters

To make the most of this scarf-tying hack, it’s best to use a scarf with a bit of extra length. If you can fold the scarf in half, drape it on your neck, and have equal lengths across either shoulder, reaching near or below the armpit, the scarf is long enough. Additionally, this will only work with traditional two-ended scarves (sorry, infinity scarf lovers).

Now on to the fun part.

To recreate this look at home, drape the scarf (unfolded) across your neck. Leave one side short, around chest-level, and let the rest of the length fall to the other side. Then, tuck the hand on the shorter side over the longer scarf tail, palm side down.

Using the hand on the longer side, hold the end of the longer scarf tail while the hand you just tucked pulls the scarf toward the shorter side. At this point, you’ll have a portion of the longer scarf tail in front of you. Pull that part of the scarf behind your neck.

This should create a loop around the hand on the shorter side. Next, grab both tails of the scarf with your free hand and raise them to the one with the loop. Using your looped hand, grab the scarf tails and pull them through the loop.

The result is an elegant, double-tied scarf that lays wider across the chest for a fuller, more luxurious look. And because it’s actually draped around the neck twice, it’s cozier and more secure than a traditional one-loop tie.

And there you have it: an easy way to revamp your scarves and stay snug through scarf season—er, winter.

How To Avoid Creating A ‘Skin Sandwich’ With Your Outfit According To This Luxury Clothing Brand Founder https://www.suggest.com/how-to-style-boots-with-pants-skirts/2708893/ Wed, 21 Dec 2022 23:05:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2708893 a woman crosses the street wearing black booties and an orange coat

Amy Smilovic is the founder of the luxury clothing brand Tibi and a self-proclaimed “creative pragmatist.” She enjoys finding balance in her style choices, playing with originality and functionality. She describes her style as chill, modern, and classic.

You can find her on social media doing what she does best—giving cool, easy, and often effortless-looking styling tips.

Recently she posted a video about how to avoid a somewhat controversial topic—the “skin sandwich.” You may ask (as I did), what the heck is a skin sandwich?! Well, it gets a bit technical, so buckle up!

What’s A Skin Sandwich?

Do you ever feel weird about your look and you’re not sure why? Smilovic has a reason you may have never thought of. She starts the reel by saying, “Skin sandwiches are one of the most hotly debated items in my Instagram feed. I’m gonna give you some more clarification on when you’ve got a sandwich and when you don’t. Okay?”

Basically, a skin sandwich is created when two straight lines “sandwich” a narrow strip of your skin. Think about wearing a pencil skirt with a straight hem and boots that almost meet the skirt—but not quite. That little piece of skin makes the skin sandwich.

A pleated skirt, a skirt cut diagonally, cowboy-style boots, or anything that doesn’t make a straight line, even if the skin is showing, would not be considered a skin sandwich.

RELATED: Modern Shoulder Pads Are The Fashion Hack For A More Balanced Silhouette And Better Looking Posture

You can also get a skin sandwich with jeans and booties when that small section of skin above your ankle shows. Smilovic also says, “Jeans that sausage you tend to be big sandwich makers.”

Let’s break that down a little.

@amysmilovic

Honestly, why this topic is the most often debated in my feeds, I’ve yet to figure out. I think it is just the utter fear that this could happen has many on edge. Regardless, the fear is real- but the fixes are even realer. Ok? And as always, if you think skin sandwich’s are bullshit, and you love yourself a good sliver of skin, then go for it. This isn’t about “good” or “bad” style, it’s about identifying when you felt off, or even like shit, in your look but couldn’t identify the culprit. And in this case, its that piece of meat – right there- wedged between the hemline of your pant or skirt and the top of your boot. Ok?@worldoftibi #skinsandwich

♬ original sound – Amysmilovic

When your jeans “sausage” you it means that your jeans are super tight, but the fix is simple. Wearing jeans that have a looser fit has less of a “sandwich vibe,” Smilovic says. Another fix is to wear socks that either match your shoes or contrasting colored socks that are interesting enough to break up the two parallel lines.

Smilovic ends the reel with some sage advice: “Skin sandwiches are like anything in life. If you don’t feel like you have a problem then you don’t need to fix the problem. Okay?”

To Fold Or To Hang? This Is The Best Way To Store Your Sweaters https://www.suggest.com/should-you-fold-or-hang-your-sweaters/2698401/ Mon, 05 Dec 2022 22:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2698401 sweaters folded in a tipped-over pile and hanging hangers

As winter approaches, it’s time to don our cozy sweaters, cardigans, and turtlenecks. And when we’re not wearing our favorite knitwear on repeat, they need a proper home.

Storing sweaters doesn’t sound complicated, but it caused a heated debate among our editors when discussing this post. We were split on folding versus hanging, but many clothing enthusiasts swear that folding your sweaters is better for their longevity than hanging.

Have you ever bought the perfect sweater that looked amazing when you tried it on, but over time it started to look frumpy and misshapen? That’s much more likely to happen if the sweater was stored on a hanger. Over time, gravity takes its toll. Heavy sweaters made of wool or cashmere are especially vulnerable to stretching out in the shoulders (a phenomenon known as “shoulder boobs,” no thank you) and appearing bottom-heavy.

RELATED: Don’t Wash Pet Hair-Covered Clothes In The Washing Machine, And 4 Other Items You Should Take Care With When Cleaning

No one wants any of that, so folding is the way to go. Don’t have enough shelving space to accommodate all those sweaters? Worry not, you can fold your sweaters and then place them over a hanger without causing damage.

How To Fold Your Sweater

  1. When folding a cardigan, first button it up.
  2. Lay it down with the back facing up and smooth out any wrinkles. Then fold both sleeves across the back.
  3. Fold the right side of the sweater inward towards the middle, then bring the left side to meet it at the center.
  4. Finally, fold the bottom half of the sweater upward so that it is folded in half.
  5. Either place the folded sweater on a shelf or slide it onto a hanger as you would a pair of jeans.

This method should keep your sweaters organized and (literally) in good shape for longer. We also have a few more helpful tips if you’re looking to reorganize your whole closet soon.

One possible exception to the rule is lightweight summer sweaters made of featherweight cotton or other fabric. Those might withstand a hanger without becoming too stretched out. But when it comes to heavier sweaters, always fold.

Always Cold? An Overshirt Is The Warm And Comfy Fashion Piece That Doesn’t Get The Hype It Deserves https://www.suggest.com/overshirt-fall-winter-fashion-trend/2691458/ Sat, 26 Nov 2022 14:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2691458 A long plaid overshirt

Last fall we were obsessed with the versatile shacket—a crossover between a shirt and a jacket, and it turned out to be a must-have in the colder seasons. The shacket looks like an oversized shirt made from heavier material that distinguishes it from a basic button-down—but it definitely isn’t strictly a jacket either. Instead, it’s an extra layer best used over tanks, tees, and thin long-sleeved shirts.

This season’s version of the shacket is “the overshirt,” which is very similar. But instead of being considered outerwear like its predecessor, the overshirt is considered to be equally suitable for indoor or outdoor wear.

Heavily influenced by men’s workwear and ’90s grunge fashion, the overshirt is a must-have, super on-trend piece that’s perfect for work and play this winter—especially if you’re someone who’s always shivering, like me.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING: This All-Natural Supplement Restored Moisture And Strength To My Dry, Brittle Strands

Sweaters and hoodies are great, but they shouldn’t be your only fashion choices when you need an extra layer of warmth. Overshirts, which can be incorporated into any outfit, are much more versatile. They’re also available in a wide variety of fabrics and prints, so there’s definitely an option for everyone.

There are solid versions for a crisp and chic look, and plaid versions for the aforementioned grunge style. The options really are endless, plus they’re warm and cozy—a much better layering option than an itchy sweater.

Overshirts are the perfect way to stay warm this holiday season, both in the office and at home. They’re light enough that you won’t get too hot while sitting by the fire and eating all the holiday goodies, but they’re heavy enough to keep you warm while walking outdoors.

A nod to ’90s grunge, this plaid overshirt comes in a variety of color combinations, lengths, and patterns. There are options that hit just below the hip, some that hit at the lower thigh, and some that hit below the knee.

  • Available in sizes Small to XX-Large.
  • Each style available in multiple colors.

This overshirt has a worn/vintage look that we love. It’s available in a variety of color options, including Rangeley blue and washed orchid—don’t those sound gorgeous?

  • Available in sizes XS to XL with petite and plus options.
  • Multiple colors and patterns to choose from.
  • Made from comfortable, super soft twill fabric.

This collared overshirt is made with plush microfleece and a comfy jersey lining. It has a longer-length fit, snap buttons at the cuffs, darted sleeves, and welt pockets with a design uniquely fit to flatter every size.

  • Available in sizes XS to L.
  • Black and ivory color options.
  • Hits just below the hip.

Kate Middleton Has Been Spotted Wearing These Chic, Affordable Earrings On Repeat https://www.suggest.com/kate-middleton-affordable-missoma-earrings/2694972/ Thu, 24 Nov 2022 21:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2694972 Kate Middleton runs a hand through her hair. She is wearing a white top with pink flowers on it

It’s hard not to admire the elegant and minimal yet sophisticated style of the women of the royal family. We love how they highlight the power something as simple as a pair of earrings has to transform any outfit into a head-turner.

Clearly, Kate Middleton is well aware of this fashion guideline, and we adore this stunning pair of earrings she’s been seen wearing on repeat as of late. What’s all the more intriguing is that these captivating earrings are much more accessibly priced than her typical jewelry picks.

In place of her usual go-to’s like Kiki McDonough and Annoushka, Middleton opted for the much more affordable Mini Pyramid Charm Hoops from Missoma. Despite the lower price tag, they’re just as swoon-worthy!

In spite of their subtlety, they have the ability to make any outfit look more polished and put together. We can see why Middleton has chosen to pair them with several looks.

Embedded in 18k gold vermeil, the princess’s delicate earrings feature rose-colored rhodochrosite gemstones (although four other color options are available). Each stone gently hangs from a dainty hoop laced with tiny pyramids. Best of all, since the design features natural irregularly-shaped gemstones, each pair is one-of-a-kind.

Rhodochrosite is known as the “Stone of the Compassionate Heart” and allegedly promotes love and compassion. Known for her sincerity and kindhearted nature, this gemstone seems to perfectly correspond to Middleton’s personality.

It’s not every day that the masses can get their hands on the same fashion picks as a royal, much less jewelry. And the Princess of Wales isn’t the only celebrity who can’t get enough of this British jewelry brand. From Jennifer Lopez and Hailey Bieber to Meghan Markle, several famously fashionable ladies have taken note of the high-quality, affordable designs available from Missoma.

There must be something special about these fantastic earrings if Middleton has added them to her regular fashion rotation. For those of you looking for a last-minute gift idea, look no further.

My Go-To Shopping Trick Helped Me Discover The Comfiest Walking Shoes I’ve Ever Owned https://www.suggest.com/walking-shoes-shopping-trick/2691773/ Tue, 22 Nov 2022 22:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2691773 Woman walking outdoors during fall

Buying new kicks isn’t easy, especially when shopping online. It isn’t until your sneakers actually hit the ground and cover some distance that you know whether they’re the right shoe for you.

Everyone has a few tips and tricks when it comes to online shopping. Whether it’s sticking to your go-to brands, learning how to expertly sleuth comments, or having a community you trust for feedback are all smart strategies.

Regarding shoes, in particular, one Suggest editor thinks she’s cracked the code when it comes to finding the best pair of walking shoes. And on her latest shopping endeavor, she was more successful than ever before!

Our Editor-Approved Shoe-Finding Trick

There’s no shortage of footwear reviews on retailer sites. Sure, we’ve all scoured them to get the deets on our potential buys, but what if there was a better way to get the scoop?

RELATED: This Is The Best Browser Extension To Help You Instantly Save Money When Online Shopping

Our editor’s tried-and-true way to shop for walking shoes involves turning to the popular online community Reddit. In particular, she has found the shoe advice gold mine lies in subreddits concerning Disney parks. Aside from their obsession with the Mouse, Disney visitors also know their stuff when it comes to comfy, durable footwear.

There’s no better place to test footwear than an amusement park, especially Disney World. Walking seven to 10 miles a day in the Florida heat is common for guests, so if your shoes suck, your feet will let you know.

And The Winner Is…

According to Disney Park enthusiasts, your ideal vacation at the most magical place on earth begins with a pair of Adidas Ultraboost 5.0 DNA shoes. One user commented, “It’s like Ultraboosts were made for Disney trips.”

With its responsive BOOST™ cushioning, this fan-favorite was originally designed for runners, but its sock-like fit, support, and flexibility make it a holy grail of comfort for anyone who moves.

Another Reddit user said, “I have lower back issues and walked an average of 11 miles a day while on a 7 day Disney trip in January 2020. My feet, legs, and back did not hurt once during the trip.”

While Adidas Ultraboosts were the top pick for all-day comfort, Allbirds Wool Runners were a close second. Many users swear by Allbirds to keep their feet happy at the parks.

“I was in the park for 5 days earlier this month and my feet had no blisters and felt great,” one Redditor wrote. “My two friends I was with also wore Allbirds and said the same.”

Similar to the Ultraboosts, Allbirds also have a lightweight foam sole. Additionally, the Allbirds Wool Runners feature Merino wool fabric, which adds to their signature “walking on a cloud” feel. These breathable, lightweight, supportive kicks will help you get where you need to go without a stitch of discomfort.

As for socks, Reddit users recommended pairing your sneakers with a comfortable pair of Balegas

Balega delivers on comfort by using plush cushioning to keep your feet protected every step of the way (literally). Plus, Balega’s proprietary Drynamix fabric is moisture-wicking, keeping your feet dry throughout the day. Best of all, the no-show style provides mega comfort without any added bulk.

Our editor personally purchased a pair of Ultraboosts and has raved about their incredible comfort. As someone who regularly enjoys long walks (and the occasional amusement park), she found that the Ultraboosts are perfectly suited for her needs. Now excuse us while we go grab a pair of our own!

Wearing Underwear As Outerwear Is On The Rise, And Not For The First Time https://www.suggest.com/underwear-as-outerwear-trend/2691282/ Mon, 21 Nov 2022 21:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2691282 Side-by-side of Princess Diana and Emily Ratajkowski wearing undergarments as outerwear

By now we know that fashion trends have a way of repeating themselves every 20 years or so, even the ones we thought were too heinous to be revived.

Some trends we’re happy to see reemerge include Birkenstock shoes and the reimagining of cargo pants (who knew cargo pants could be functional and pretty?). On the other hand, we feel more conflicted about more regrettable trends like the whale tail and zigzag headbands re-entering the mainstream.

The latest trend to reemerge, wearing underwear as everyday clothing, falls more into this latter camp.

RELATED: Thank Gen Z For Bringing Back This Amazing ’90s Boot Trend

Everyone from Bella Hadid to members of the Kardashian/Jenner crew has been spotted wearing their underwear as outerwear lately. But while influencers are running around in their undies, I prefer the warmth and comfort of my sweatpants and hoodies—and I don’t think that makes me prudish.

Then And Now

Of course, we all remember Madonna’s infamous cone bras from the early ‘90s. She wasn’t the only ‘90s celeb to wear their undergarments as clothing, either. Selena also wore her share of bustiers and hot pants, and many more celebs followed suit, wearing slips as dresses, bralettes as shirts, and boxers as shorts.

Today’s iteration of the style is a bit more skin-forward, with tiny bra tops under blazers and see-through dresses exposing barely-there bottoms being much of the norm. Brands like SKIMS have also further blurred the lines between loungewear and underwear.

Still, there have been some more elegant interpretations of the trend, like the bedazzled bustier Scarlett Johansson wore to the American Cinematheque Awards last year. So if you prefer your undergarments with a little more glitz and glamour, that’s fair game too!

How To Try It Out, If You Dare

Our favorite iteration of the look includes a sexy bustier or bra top pair with high-waisted pants and a structured blazer, a la ScarJo. This look has been a go-to for many Gen X Hollywood actresses, which allows for a polished red carpet ensemble that is arguably much more comfortable than a dress.

For a more casual look, try wearing a bralette under an open button-down shirt or oversized jacket. For something a little chicer, you could layer a sheer shirt over a black bralette or corset top. You could also reverse this by layering the corset over top of a button-down shirt.

Truly, there aren’t any rules when styling this trend. Corsets, longline bras, and silky slip camis can all be worn with joggers, jeans, and tailored trousers alike. If you dig it, we say wear your panties with pride. There will apparently be plenty of looks to choose from in the coming months.

Kate Middleton Recently Honored Queen Elizabeth By Wearing This Striking Piece Of Jewelry From The Queen’s Collection https://www.suggest.com/kate-middleton-queen-elizabeth-honored-wearing-striking-jewelry-collection/2692030/ Sat, 19 Nov 2022 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2692030 Kate Middleton smiles in powder blue blouse

During a special outing, Kate Middleton paid tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II by donning an iconic piece of jewelry. However, she’s not the first member of the royal family to borrow the pearl choker. Here’s how Middleton styled the timeless heirloom.

Kate Middleton Wears Queen’s Pearls To Festival Of Remembrance

On November 12, the British Royal Family gathered at London’s Royal Albert Hall for the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance. The annual concert pays tribute to men and women in the armed forces, especially those who have given their lives fighting for the UK.

The Princess of Wales wore a classy black cinched jacket with a pleated skirt. She paired the look with two pieces of jewelry that once belonged to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II: a four-strand pearl choker necklace with a diamond centerpiece and the queen’s classic Bahrain pearl drop earrings. However, the iconic necklace has a long history of its own.

The Necklace Has An Interesting History

Fans of the royals will immediately recognize Middleton’s necklace as the queen’s Japanese Pearl Choker. According to the Queen’s Jewel Vault, Queen Elizabeth commissioned the court jeweler to craft the necklace from the cultured pearls presented to her in the ’70s by the Japanese government.

The queen wore the necklace multiple times throughout her life. She even lent the necklace to Princess Diana for a state visit from the Netherlands in 1982. Diana wore it with the Lover’s Knot Tiara, another heirloom that Middleton now possesses.

The Choker Is Now A Favorite Of Kate Middleton’s

Queen Elizabeth memorably lent the necklace to Middleton in 2017 (per TODAY), so it seems like the Princess of Wales was already fond of the piece when Her Majesty passed this September. It’s no surprise that Middleton has chosen to wear the choker multiple times in honor of the queen.

RELATED: Why A Protester Threw Eggs At King Charles

As reported by Town & Country, Middleton memorably wore the same necklace to the queen’s funeral months ago. So, it’s especially touching that Middleton decided to re-wear the important heirloom this Remembrance Day.

It looks like this necklace that was once favored by Queen Elizabeth has become a meaningful staple in Kate Middleton’s jewelry box. It’s also a powerful reminder that although the queen has passed on, her presence lives on through her family.

These Controversial Shoes From Your Youth Keep Selling Out On Repeat, And I Can See Why https://www.suggest.com/birkenstock-boston-clog-viral/2689500/ Thu, 17 Nov 2022 20:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2689500 A woman smiling and walking her dog in the city.

Birkenstocks (or Birks, as the kids would say) have always been divisive. You probably have an image in your head of shoes with cork insoles and a suede leather exterior. This combination seems stylish to some, while others just don’t see the appeal.

And we get it, Birks can sometimes be lumped into the “ugly shoe” category along with other trendy footwear, like Uggs or Crocs. But recently, Birkenstock has had a huge cultural resurgence—and honestly, we’re here for it.

I bought my first pair of Birkenstock sandals at the beginning of the summer, and I’ve rarely taken them off since. They’re so comfy, super easy to throw on, and go with just about everything.

I even wear them with socks if it’s a little chilly outside. They’re just that comfortable. And although several copycats have been launched by the likes of Alexander McQueen, Celine, Gucci, Fendi, etc., there’s just nothing like the real deal.

RELATED: Thanks Gen Z For Bringing Back A ’90s Boot Trend—This Waterproof Version Is A Must

Birkenstock has a ton of different styles to choose from: sneakers, boots, clogs, sandals, and more. But the Boston Clog is the style that’s blowing up on social media and flying off the shelves faster than they can be kept in (Birken)stock.

This classic clog has gone super-viral on Pinterest and TikTok, making them difficult to find at most retailers. One theory for their popularity, according to TikTok creator Annie Paventy, is because of their comfort and versatility.

“I’ve seen them styled so many ways,” she said. “They’re also super comfortable, probably one of the most comfortable shoes you can wear besides a pair of sneakers. They’re like the epitome of the cozy, comfortable shoe.”

It can be difficult to find a pair of Boston Clogs, but where there’s a will, there’s a way. In addition to scouring various retailer websites and signing up for email alerts, you could also try calling a local store in the morning to see whether they’ve gotten a shipment. Otherwise, if you’re willing to pay a premium, it couldn’t hurt to check out resellers like Poshmark or Mercari.

So where do you come down on the Birkenstock debate? Are you a yay or a nay? Personally, while I can see the merit of the detractors’ arguments, I’ve seen the light and these will be my go-to kicks for the foreseeable future.

The Y2k Whale Tail Is The Controversial Look Trendsetters Are Trying To Bring Back https://www.suggest.com/whale-tail-trend-resurgence/2688174/ Thu, 10 Nov 2022 21:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2688174 Left: Gillian Anderson flashing a whale tale in 2001, Right: Alexa Demie with a whale tale in 2019

Remember when low-rise jeans were all the rage? I know this is a trend most of us never want to see again for a variety of reasons. But for me, the number-one sin of wearing low-rise jeans was the thong exposure. You know what I’m talking about—the dreaded whale tail.

This controversial look made its debut on the runway during Jean Paul Gaultier’s Spring/Summer 1997 show, which included models wearing exposed thongs and briefs. And since Y2K styles are once again dominating fashion trends, this horrific trend has made its way back again!

Why Won’t The Whale Tail Go Away?

Writer Eliza Huber at Refinery 29 tried to warn Gen Zers about reviving this trend when she wrote a piece about the reality of wearing a whale tail while out and about. She was curious what it was like to wear a visible thong in public, so she tried it out for a week.

At first, she wore different “whale-tail-style garments”—everything from pants with a thong-shaped cut-out in the back to midi skirts with strings attached to the waist—that gave the appearance of exposed underwear. Her conclusion that these items were “surprisingly comfortable” honestly shocked me.

But all that changed when she actually tried to style the look with real thong underwear and vintage parachute pants worn low enough on her hips so her underwear peeked over. When Huber attempted this authentic version of the whale tail trend, she realized she’d made a mistake.

RELATED: Thanks Gen Z For Bringing Back A ’90s Boot Trend—This Waterproof Version Is A Must

“Almost immediately upon stepping outside my front door, I felt uncomfortable,” she wrote. “As I walked to Trader Joe’s, I noticed that people were looking—no, staring—at me. Within five minutes, I turned around … heading back to my sartorial safety net of baggy jeans and a hoodie. Every last piece of photo evidence was, in turn, deleted from my phone.”

Huber eventually realized what all Gen Xers have known for years—there’s a good reason that whale tails came to an end back in 2006. The style might look good on the red carpet or on Instagram, but wearing a thong with low-rise pants in your everyday life is one trend that doesn’t deserve a reboot.

The exact reason why whale tails continue to be popular with influencers and celebs will likely remain a mystery. It could just be that they like to be provocative, but most of us know that the whale tail should stay in the ’90s where it belongs.

6 Princess Diana Fashion Staples That Are Trending In 2022 https://www.suggest.com/princess-diana-fashion-staples-trends/2688927/ Wed, 09 Nov 2022 21:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2688927 Side by side images of Princess Diana in jeans, a sweatshirt, and blazer and blue trousers and a white blouse.

Between The Crown, Spencer, and the Diana musical, Princess Di has been front and center in cultural conversations over the last two years. Indeed, she has remained a beloved icon 25 years after her death. Her timeless fashion sense is certainly no exception.

Some of Princess Diana’s best looks of the ‘80s and ‘90s are still in style in 2022. (If it ain’t broke, why fix it?) Here are some of the best Princess Di trends coming back around—if they ever really left.

1. Dressed Down Blazers

Part of the allure of Princess Di’s wardrobe was how effortless it was. She looked chic even while casual, thanks in no small part to her love of pairing blazers and jeans. The easy addition to an otherwise simple outfit creates an entirely new look with minimal effort (read: the best kind).

We love the social media influencer brand, the Drop’s, Blake Blazer for its classic lines and sleek finish. And at right around $70, this is an affordable option for a wardrobe piece that can be dressed up or down as needed.

2. High Waisted, Loose Fitting Jeans

Gen Z-ers can try to bring back low-rise jeans all they want—really, they can have them all. We’ll stick with trusty Mom jeans: high-waist coverage, relaxed fit in the leg, and the look that keeps on serving all these decades later. No kids necessary—just a love of comfort and timeless style.

And it doesn’t get much more classic with jeans than Levi’s. Its Premium High Loose Taper Jean might not specifically say “Mom Jean,” but that’s what they are. These jeans also feature Cool Performance engineering to keep them breathable and wick away moisture.

3. Subtly Western Boots

Princess Di wasn’t averse to dipping into Americana influence for her wardrobe. Her Western wear often had a designer twist, like these cut-out boots she wore with a blazer, sweats, and cap. For an everyday look that doesn’t scream Western, these Ariat Heritage boots are a great place to start.

The sturdy leather boots come in multiple finishes, from a rustic, distressed brown to a chic black with subtle floral embossing. Pair these versatile boots with a midi skirt, skinny jeans, or take a cue from Princess Di and throw on your trusty Mom jeans.

4. Classic High-Waist Trousers

(Princess Diana Archive/Getty Images)

Do you want to know the easiest way to feel like you’re wearing pajamas while looking like a million bucks? Wear a pair of high-waisted, wide-leg trousers. Trousers are typically softer than cotton denim, and the extra coverage (and roominess) from the waist and leg make these pants way comfier than they look.

For a modern spin on a classic piece, try a cropped leg like these trousers from Tanming. The polyester-wool blend is warm and stretchy for ultimate comfort in the colder months.

5. Dreamy Patterned Knits

With cold weather approaching, there’s no better time to embody Diana’s love of graphic knits. Princess Di made waves when she wore this Warm & Wonderful “Black Sheep” sweater in 1983. Onlookers considered Diana a black sheep herself, and this choice seemed like a sly nod by Diana to her reputation.

This handmade knit sweater puts a slight spin on the princess’ original look, featuring a twisted front, chunky pattern, and cardigan style. An imaginative print sweater instantly livens up a pair of jeans or trousers.

6. Bright, Bold Outerwear

(Jayne Fincher/Getty Images)

Why should a coat dampen a fashion statement just because the weather’s cold? Frankly, it shouldn’t—and the people’s princess agreed. Her casual winter outerwear was unapologetically bold and bright, unlike the usual demure palettes typically worn by the royals.

This cropped puffer coat not only feels like you’re wearing a giant, fluffy hug. It also comes in a wide variety of colors, from Diana’s cherry red to coffee to purple. So, you can find the right statement that speaks to you.

Thanks Gen Z For Bringing Back A ’90s Boot Trend—This Waterproof Version Is A Must  https://www.suggest.com/lug-sole-boots-trend-waterproof-picks/2686753/ Sat, 05 Nov 2022 16:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2686753 A white and black Chelsea lug sole boots on a blue background

Some things from the ‘90s are welcome back—slip dresses, anything flannel, and shaggy cuts are a few that we’re accepting with open arms. However, the ‘90s can keep thin eyebrows and low-rise jeans, thanks.

To add to the former list, we are definitely glad that lug sole boots are in fashion. I mean, if you live anywhere that gets rain or cold wintery weather, these boots are a must. But, they’re not just functional, they seriously cute and can be styled in a number of ways.

If you passed over the trend before, you’re seriously missing out. Lug sole boots aren’t just for the edgy girls who paired them with baby doll dresses and choker necklaces (though we do love the look).

RELATED: How To Style These Re-Emerging Gen X Fashion Trends Without Resorting To Gen Z Aesthetics

To start, chunky sole boots are seriously comfy, something I’m sure we all value a bit more these days. Plus, for those that want a little more height, these boots can provide just that. And depending on the brand, they can add a little height or a lot of height. I mean, some of these boots are chunk-y, and we’re not mad about it.

With so many styles and shades on the market, lug sole boots can easily be paired with anything from jeans and a t-shirt to a flowy floral dress. They instantly add a little edge to your look and are perfect for many fall styles. Check out some of our favorites.

This Denim Trend Makes It Look Like You’re Wearing Two Pairs Of Jeans At Once, And We Need To Talk About It https://www.suggest.com/double-waisted-high-rise-jean-trend/2685137/ Fri, 28 Oct 2022 21:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2685137 Two pairs of jeans stacked on one another

If you’re a Gen Xer like me, you’ve lived through your share of crazy jeans trends. We had the acid-washed ’80s with fold-over waists and tight-rolled pant cuffs. And who could forget the spectacular ’90s bootcut or the low-rise (“whale tail”) 2000s?

Does anyone remember the JNCO jeans with cartoonishly wide legs? I know they were in there somewhere, and I’m afraid Gen Z may be bringing that look back (yikes). Then, of course, we loved our jeggings and skinny jeans. We’ve really gone through a denim rollercoaster in our lifetime.

As a petite 40-something woman, I’m insanely glad that high-waisted jeans are a style that seems like it’s here to stay. At this point in my life, just give me a pair of dark wash, high-waisted jeans with wide legs. I’ll pair them with a v-neck tee and a cute shoe all day long—and twice on Sundays.

RELATED: ‘Jellyfish Hair’ Is Trending And It’s Like A Mullet On Steroids

But now, the fashion industry is attempting to do us one better with a denim style we’ve never seen before … and we’re not sure how we feel about it. We’re talking about the double-waisted jean, a top-trending fall jean style offered up by brands like Tibi, Sandro, Nasty Gal, ASOS, and Forever 21.

The double-waisted jean is essentially an example of a trompe l’œil, a French term that translates to “optical illusion.” They look exactly how you’d expect, with two waistbands layered on top of each other and two rows of belt loops. They also appear to have two rows of buttons and/or zippers and sometimes even four front pockets, as if you’re wearing a low-rise baggy jean over a high-rise skinny jean.

And to be perfectly candid, we’re not 100% on board with this look.

As we mentioned earlier, we love a good high-waisted jean and would prefer that trend to never go away. But if you’re petite, the double-waist illusion isn’t going to do you any favors in the leg-elongation department. If you’re tall and blessed with long legs, though, this … er, unique style might be worth a try.

Most of the stylings we’ve seen are paired with the current trending crop-waist tops or skin-hugging body suits, understandably to make sure the double-waist line is prominent. This creates immediate visual interest around your midsection, something which becomes slightly more unappealing every year we get older.

We can give props where props are due: the look is innovative, which is becoming ever more difficult in fashion. But seriously, we really think it just looks like you’re wearing jeans under your jeans. We can’t unsee it.

Modern Shoulder Pads Are The Fashion Hack For A More Balanced Silhouette And Better Looking Posture https://www.suggest.com/modern-shoulder-pads-benefits/2683708/ Mon, 24 Oct 2022 20:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2683708 Woman sitting upright with good posture and hands on shoulders

Some fashion trends are just synonymous with the ’80s: big hair, bright clothing, and statement jewelry, just to name a few. But nothing screams “’80s boss lady” like the silhouette of a woman wearing shoulder pads so sharp they essentially turned her upper half into an upside-down triangle.

As a child of the ’80s, I often saw my mom rocking shoulder pads in dresses and blazers. Her shoulders, like her bangs, were large and in charge. Her hair was permed and teased to within an inch of its life, and her bright blue eyeshadow was always on point. I’ve got to admit, she looked pretty fierce.

RELATED: Another ’80s Staple Is Currently Trending: Bomber Jackets

It might surprise you, though, to learn that shoulder pads didn’t originate in the ’80s. They became a part of women’s fashion around World War II and reemerged during the ’80s when women joined the workforce in droves. Shoulder pads gave an edge to a woman’s shape, giving them more confidence and allowing them to take up more space.

Today shoulder pads might be far off your fashion priority list, but perhaps that shouldn’t be the case.

As detailed by personal stylist Claire Hall, modern iterations can help balance your silhouette (especially if you don’t naturally have an hourglass figure) and visually lift everything up. They can even improve the appearance of your posture by adding a nice square silhouette at the shoulders.

If you’re ready to add shoulder pads (*back*) to your wardrobe, Amazon naturally has a ton of affordable finds.

Similar to the pads Hall used, these Silicone Shoulder Pads by LUNNTE are anti-slip, made from natural silica gel, and can be worn horizontally or vertically. They’ll give you (at least the illusion of) better posture, reduce the look of sloping shoulders, and look seamless under clothing.

A reviewer said, “I love these silicone shoulder pads. They are just the right size and adhere to the skin really [well] and seem to last a little longer than other similar silicone shoulder pads that I’ve purchased.”

These Ann West Shoulder Pads are molded to fit petite shoulders. They hook to your bra strap and look perfect under shirts with dolman sleeves (long sleeves that are wide at the armhole and tight at the wrist). Comfortable and lightweight, these shoulder pads give a little more shape to a small frame.

The Ann West Hook and Loop Shoulder Pads also hook to your bra strap and are ideal for medium-to-large builds. One Amazon reviewer said, “Blouses and t-shirts look better on with these shoulder pads. They give whatever you are wearing a little structure. Also, for me, wider shoulders make my hips look smaller which is a nice plus.”

Treat Yourself: These Buttery Soft ‘Silksweats’ Are The Ultimate Temperature Regulating Loungewear https://www.suggest.com/lunya-silksweats-overview/2682329/ Mon, 17 Oct 2022 21:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2682329 Lower half of a woman wearing tan sweatpants and sweatshirt on a blue background

If you’re bored of your old, ratty yoga pants and t-shirt, it could be time to invest in something a little higher quality. And while over-the-top matching pajama sets are great for the holidays, for everyday wear, we feel like we can do better.

That’s where Lunya comes in. Their mission is making “restwear” that looks as good as it feels. Instead of sweatsuits, the brand has an innovative “Silksweats” that may just be the new perfect work-from-home uniform.

If you’re like me, you might be envisioning silk pajamas. Contrary to slinky silk PJs, however, these sweats work equally well for a quick run to the grocery store as they do for laying around the house.

While they look like a normal sweatsuit, they’re inconspicuously luxe. A thermoregulating blend of responsibly sourced cotton, Mulberry silk, and TENCEL™ Modal help keep you at a comfortable temperature (aka no sweating in these sweats). And the relaxed fit is perfect for lazy Sunday mornings when getting out of your pajamas is low on your to-do list.

The sweatshirt and matching joggers are available in black and tan and run from extra small to extra large.

Mix and match the colors or go monochromatic for a stylish yet casual feel. Size up if you’re going for the oversized look. Whatever way you choose, you really can’t go wrong!

While quality products and real life sometimes seem incompatible, you won’t have to stress over the care of these items. They can be either machine-washed or hand-washed depending on your preference. Just be sure to use a mesh laundry bag if you choose to machine-wash.

RELATED: These Luxurious Moisture-Wicking Thermals Will Be Your New Cold Weather Go-To

Lunya’s Mission

Lunya is committed to providing quality products and caring for the planet through sustainable practices. They also put a lot of thought into the design process and deliver items that are useful and functional for the modern woman. We want some darn pockets, and these joggers have them!

They source safe and responsible products right down to the dyes they use, and they attempt to minimize their environmental impact as much as possible. That’s definitely something we can get behind.

Like many non-fast fashion brands, their products are a little pricier than most—but these items will last much longer and provide you with style and comfort for years to come. So whether you’re looking to splurge on yourself or want to get a jump on your holiday shopping, you can’t go wrong with Lunya’s Silkweats!

Girlfriend Collective’s Latest Cold-Weather Line Is Not Only Cozy AF, It’s Revolutionary—Here’s Why https://www.suggest.com/girlfriend-collective-regirlfriend-program-reset-collection/2682366/ Sat, 15 Oct 2022 20:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2682366 A white woman stands with wind blowing her hair, her hand on her heart, wearing a pink shirt

It’s a sad reality for those of us who love fashion that textiles have one of the worst recycling rates of any reusable material. In fact, according to the EPA, 11.3 million tons of textile waste went to landfills in 2018. Just 2.5 million tons, or less than 15%, were recycled.

Alarming statistics like these can make one feel a bit hopeless—how can a single person topple literal mountains of wasted clothing?

One person can’t, but maybe a collective can make a dent. Enter Girlfriend Collective, a brand of workout and loungewear that has launched a trade-in initiative, making it significantly easier to play a small part in reducing textile and plastic waste.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, ReGirlfriend

Not only does Girlfriend Collective make its entire ReGirlfriend line with 91% recycled plastic bottles (RPET), but the brand also allows you to return old ReGirlfriend items in exchange for store credit. Just purchase their $7 shipping label, send in your old garment, and Girlfriend Collective will recycle your old clothes into new pieces and give you $15 credit towards something new. The brand is closing the waste loop that consumer fashion usually leaves wide open.

RELATED: 6 Brands We Love For Promoting Age-Representation In Fashion

Girlfriend Collective also takes special care to reduce emissions and water waste throughout the production and shipping process. Other reasons to love this brand: it’s size-inclusive, features a wide range of colors, and has tens of thousands of glowing reviews. Saving the planet has never been easier (or more stylish and comfy).

Our Favorite Eco-Friendly Picks

First up, the ultimate loungewear piece: leggings. The ReSet Lounge Legging is moisture-wicking and quick-drying, making them perfect for all-day wear, including working out. They feature no outseams for a sleek look. And they even have a bonded pocket at the back waistband (because all leggings should have pockets, period).

These leggings are peached on both sides, which gives them a buttery soft feel of other cult-favorite brands. Except these leggings are cheaper, made with sustainable materials, follow humane business practices, and can be recycled into new clothing when you’re through with them.

Like the ReSet leggings, the line’s long-sleeve tee fabric is a 91% RPET, 9% spandex blend. It features the same extra buttery feel and sweat-wicking capabilities. Dress this scoop-neck, fitted tea down with sweats, or pair it with jeans and a blazer for a chic, comfy look.

Each Girlfriend Collective fitted long-sleeve tee diverts 15 water bottles from landfills, prevents 18.85 pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere, and saves 3.34 kilowatt hours of energy. That’s enough energy to charge your phone for a year.

The recyclable joggers offer the roomy feeling of sweatpants with the form-hugging fit of leggings. They feature elasticated, cinched cuffs and a fabric waistband. So you can keep things as loose or tight as you like. These versatile joggers save 6.93 kilowatt hours of energy and prevent 39 pound of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere.

“This is what dreams are made of,” one customer wrote. “Don’t even get me started on the material. They are SO buttery soft. I now understand the hype. Apparently, I should have bought them in every color because I now live in them.”

The Collective’s website calls the ReSet Relaxed Tank a workout tank, but let’s be real. This lightweight jersey tank is also perfect for a casual, on-the-go look with jeans or under a blazer for a cool (both literally and figuratively) professional vibe.

Hundreds of happy customers raved about the tank’s buttery soft feel. Another fan-favorite feature is the tank’s round hem, which provides perfect coverage in all the right places.

In addition to its ReSet recycling program, Girlfriend Collective offers 30-day returns. But as hundreds of happy reviews suggest, you’ll probably fall in love with your ReSet clothing like they did. And once it’s inevitably time for a closet cleanout, you can ship them right back to Girlfriend Collective so they can make them into someone else’s favorite piece.

These Amazon Purse Accessories Are Actually Pretty Clever—They’ll Keep Your Bag Organized, Clean, And Functional https://www.suggest.com/handy-safety-purse-accessories/2681369/ Thu, 13 Oct 2022 20:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2681369 A flask, purse magnet, purse ball cleaner, and purse alarm on a blue background

Many of us, myself included, are guilty of not keeping our purses as organized as they could be. Regardless of size, they always seem to become a black hole for keys, chapstick, and other essentials lost in the folds of the fabric liner.

Recently, after spending too much time decluttering months-old receipts and movie tickets from my handbag, a fellow editor shared a few Instagram posts that inspired me to undertake an extreme makeover, purse edition.

From a handbag-optimized water bottle to a motion-activated purse light, content creator Julianna Claire had an intriguing lineup of products that seriously impressed us.

In a follow-up post, Claire shared more useful Amazon finds all designed to make your purse even more functional.

Amazon finds can be pretty hit-or-miss, but these purse accessories stand out for their ability to keep your bag tidier and more functional—and to keep you safer. Product reviewers agree that these items are pretty darn handy. If you’ve always aspired to be the woman who comes prepared for any situation, look no further.

Who doesn’t need all the help they can get to stay hydrated? This minimalist water bottle’s flat rectangular shape allows it to fit in your purse more efficiently than a standard water bottle. Available in four different sizes and with a stainless steel lid, reaching your daily water intake has never been so easy or looked so elegant.

No more hunting blindly through your purse! This nifty little light works automatically, so there are no buttons to press or switches to flip. It illuminates automatically when it senses a light tap or an approaching hand. Once you’ve found what you’re looking for, it turns off by itself after 10 seconds. It’s also energy efficient, so battery replacements will be few and far between.

Bagnet’s founder, Kelley Daring, says her goal was “to offer a product that would make women’s lives easier and better.” This little but powerful purse magnet achieves that by attaching your bag to any magnetic surface. It holds up to eight pounds and won’t damage credit cards or tech devices, so it’s safe to use on the interior or exterior of your handbag. Use it to keep your purse off the floor of bathroom stalls and restaurants, or even keep your bag securely attached to grocery carts while you shop.

RELATED: Made ‘For Humans Living Life’, This Goldilocks Bag Brand Combines Functionality With Style

This helpful purse accessory consists of a round plastic outer shell with a smaller, sticky ball on the inside. It’s designed to roll around in your purse and clean up any stray crumbs, lint, or other small debris. The best part? It’s super easy to clean! Just pop open the outer ball and run the interior ball under water. Your purse will be spick and span in no time.

Have you ever had to make the trek back to the car to stash your purse because you forgot to look up the stadium bag guidelines beforehand? That’s exactly the problem this little bag helps you avoid. It’s small and completely transparent, so it’s compliant with clear-bag rules at all major sporting events. In spite of that, it’s big enough to hold your necessities. Plus, fanny packs are totally back in fashion!

You can never be too safe, especially when on the go. This purse accessory is small and lightweight, so it’s easy to slip into any bag. It connects to iPhone and Android phones via Bluetooth with real-time GPS location and a tracking device for your belongings. Anytime you feel unsafe, just pull on the Care Go device and it will alert your friends and family members with your location. And because you only have to charge it once a year, you don’t have to worry about it dying on you at a critical moment.

Another personal security device, this rechargeable keychain alarm emits a loud siren and a bright flashing light in any emergency situation you may encounter. It charges in just an hour via a USB cable, and you can also use it as a flashlight.

Amazon Secret High-End Fashion Brand Is Featuring Major Sales During Amazon Prime Early Access Days https://www.suggest.com/the-drop-amazon-prime-access-day-deals/2715217/ Tue, 11 Oct 2022 19:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/the-drop-amazon-prime-access-day-deals/2715217/ Woman wearing balloon sleeve cardigan on left, woman wearing cowl neck silk camisole on right

Confession: I have a love-hate relationship with Amazon. While I love their clothing prices, I’m not crazy about the material and fit of some pieces. If you’re in the same thrifty dilemma as me, might I introduce you to The Drop.

The Drop is a curated collection of high-end pieces designed by online influencers. These designers have their fingers on the pulse of the hottest trends, so each piece is guaranteed to be trendy without being gaudy or flimsy.

Additionally, each collection is a limited edition (each drop only lasts 30 hours). That means you can rest assured that your wardrobe is fashionable and unique. Plus, you can learn a little about the provenance of your Amazon pieces on The Drop’s main page—a win, win, win.

Oh, and did we mention the biggest win yet? The Drop is offering a limited-time sale on some of their best looks for Amazon Prime Access Days. Here are some of Suggest’s favorites (click through for sale prices!).

We love a good blazer for an effortlessly chic chilly-weather look. From the office to a night on the town to an afternoon playdate with the kiddos, this versatile Blake Blazer can be dressed up or down as necessary.

The notched lapel and long silhouette keep the blazer trim and feminine, not boxy. And with nine colors to choose from—including classic black, vibrant aqua, and sleek ivory—you’re sure to find the perfect addition to your specific style.

The Christy Cowl Neck Cami is the perfect solution for those who want the comfort of a tank but the look of something fancier. (Who doesn’t feel fancy AF wearing something this silky smooth?)

Pair this luxe camisole with jeans, a maxi skirt—or as a matter of fact, it would look great with the Blake Blazer. The cami’s perfect blend of flirty, formal, and comfortable instantly elevates any look. It’s available in seven colors, including a unique sandy silver that immediately caught my eye.

There are lots of reasons to love the Keyla Midi Dress, but let’s start with the most important: comfort. This 100% viscose dress is ultra-soft and breathable while still feeling sturdy. Plus, the loose A-line design is universally flattering (and forgiving on those not-great body image days).

Despite its cozy feel, this dress maintains a chic appearance thanks to the extra details: a square neck, romantic puff sleeves, and eye-catching tiers. Wear it with tall boots when it’s chilly, or rock it with sandals on an unseasonably warm winter day—or year-round, for that matter.

Speaking of comfort, let’s talk loungewear: the ultimate ‘treat yourself’ purchase. As much as I love my leggings and 20-year-old sweatpants, sometimes I want a little extra ‘oomph’ in my lazy day looks. Enter the Catalina Sweater Pant, your sweatpants’ trendier little sister.

These pull-on, stretchy pants are comfy enough for wearing around the house but chic enough to wear on an unexpected trip into town. The ribbed finish and high waist offer extra coverage, while the merino wool blend keeps you warm. In a word, perfection.

Cardigans are the unsung heroes of cold-weather wardrobes—versatile, convenient, and always in style. The Divya Pointelle Cardigan is certainly no exception. Its pointelle stitching and classic balloon sleeves add a vintage feminine flair that spices up an otherwise neutral wardrobe piece.

Additionally, the cardigan is 100% cotton. Many reviewers commented on how pleased they were with the sweater’s sturdy construction, unlike other cheaper pieces with a flimsy acrylic feel. It also comes in navy and white.

Finally, no good wardrobe haul is complete without a new accessory (in this writer’s humble opinion). We love the Koko Quilted Flap Bag for its designer—ahem, Chanel—look and not-so-designer price tag. I don’t know about you, but I’ll take a cute $35 bag over a designer $8,000 bag any day.

And thanks to The Drop, you can, too. This quilted crossbody is stylish, durable, and small enough to take into most venues with bag size restrictions.

As one happy customer put it, “the chain is a bit heavy for my liking. But it’s sturdy, so no complaints. The bag can hold my iPhone 12 Pro, two lipsticks, Fenty lip gloss, and my wallet with room to spare. I definitely recommend!”

The combination of Amazon Prime Days and a new collection from The Drop is like capturing lightning in a bottle. These deals won’t be around for much longer. Make sure you snag your new designer pieces now before they’re gone for good.

Kate Middleton And Meghan Markle Love Wearing This Timeless Princess Diana Style https://www.suggest.com/kate-middleton-meghan-markle-love-wearing-timeless-princess-diana-style/2680704/ Sun, 09 Oct 2022 21:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2680704 Side by side images of Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle

It’s no surprise that Princess Diana’s daughters-in-law often channel her iconic style. The late Princess of Wales was undeniably stylish, chic, and put-together. I mean, we all probably attempt to copy the late princess occasionally.

While Princess Di would occasionally opt for a trendy bubble skirt or a bold blue eyeliner, most of her fashion go-to’s featured timeless styles that are still loved today. We’ve recently noticed that both Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle have followed suit by wearing one style in particular on repeat—the shirtdress.

(L:Photo by Peter Nicholls – WPA Pool / Getty Images, C:Photo by Princess Diana Archive/Getty Images, R:Photo by Tim Rooke – Pool/Getty Images)

The look can take slightly different forms like Middleton’s summer and winter versions of the look, or Markle’s more structured, blazer-inspired tendencies, but the basics of the style still apply.

RELATED: Kate Middleton Wore Princess Diana’s Sapphire Earrings At Jubilee, Dispelling Longstanding Rumor

The beauty of a shirtdress or jacket is its ability to look undeniably put together while effortlessly chic at the same time. From business meetings to Sunday brunch, a shirtdress can be the perfect pick.

Welcome to your updated LBD. This classic Sleeveless Blazer Dress from White House Black Market features double-breasted gold-tone buttons, an invisible back zip, and a fitted silhouette that hits around the knees. Shoppers note the dress runs true to size and offers clean lines that help to create a slimmer appearance.

This button-down midi shirtdress from Banana Republic Factory is currently on sale for up to a whopping 60% off. Available in new light khaki and earthenware, this 97% cotton dress runs slightly large and offers a breezy silhouette. It also features a point collar, straight hems, and pockets(!). Wear belted for a more structured look.

Just in time for fall, a classic double-breasted trench coat evokes the feel of a shirt or blazer dress just in outwear form. This option from Clavin Klein includes a waist-cinching belt and removable hood for more functionality. Choose from a classic oyster beige, or opt for a more festive chambray blue or dusty blush hue.

My favorite part about this bag (and all of Dagne Dover’s collection, honestly) is the matte 100% neoprene material. This high-tech fabric is water-resistant and shock-absorbent. This means it can handle whatever life throws at you, keeping your stuff safe and dry. While a few reviewers reported creasing or pilling, Dagne Dover offers helpful tips on rejuvenating your neoprene back to normal if necessary.

The matte finish of the neoprene and clean lines of the bag give the Dakota a sleek, modern look that you can dress up or down. Oh, and did we mention that it’s helping save the planet? The backpack lining, shoe bag, and dust bag are made from Repreve recycled polyester, a durable material made from recycled water bottles.

The Perfect Everyday Crossbody

A shopper favorite, Dagne Dover’s Micah Crossbody is the essential everyday bag for all your essentials. The bag was designed to keep you organized, with clever features like card slots in the front exterior pocket, a detachable key leash, and a magnetic closure exterior phone pocket. Touting an overall 3L volume, many reviews note the bag holds more than it looks. Plus, its functional size works for many venues that carry bag size restrictions.

The Perfect Every Day, Overnight, All-The-Time Duffel

For those who prefer the look of a satchel but still want storage space, the Landon Carryall Bag is the perfect solution. Use it as a dressed-up gym bag, dressed-down luggage, and everything in between. The spacious carryall has enough room to store a 13″ laptop, change of shoes (in the included shoe bag, of course), clothes, canteen—need I go on?

Like the Dakota, the Landon is made from premium, water-resistant, shock-proof neoprene. It also has a performance air pouch to keep your carryall breezy and odor-free. Thanks to its detachable strap, you can wear the Landon as a crossbody or carry it like a tote. Additionally, the Landon has a covert back pocket for quick and secure access to your phone on the go.

The Landon is available in five sizes and six colors, meaning you can get the perfect duffel for your needs and style. The medium caught my eye first, as it seemed large enough to be an overnight bag but not so bulky I couldn’t take it into the office. Many customers report wanting to buy a bigger version after sticking with a small one. You can compare Landon sizes directly on Dagne Dover’s website to find your perfect fit.

“As a mom, this bag is so practical and cute,” one happy reviewer wrote. “I needed something that [wouldn’t] stain but could carry all of my essentials. This bag is a lifesaver and goes so well with my athletic/casual attire. The quality is amazing.”

You shouldn’t have to sacrifice functionality for style or vice versa. From its roomy carryalls to compact crossbodies, Dagne Dover’s eco-conscious, function-meets-form ethos is apparent in every bag. Dagne Dover was made by hard-working women for hard-working women. This Surprising Pants Trend Is Having A Moment And It Can Make You Look Taller https://www.suggest.com/split-hem-pants-trend/2679687/ Fri, 07 Oct 2022 20:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2679687 women wearing black split hem pants

Now that it’s officially fall and the weather is starting to get cooler, long pants are back in the wardrobe rotation in full force—and the timing couldn’t be more perfect. As fashion continues to reference elements of the past, some of the latest pants trends have been anything but boring.

Everyone from Jennifer Lopez to Margot Robbie to Tracee Ellis Ross are currently rocking a surprising trend. It’s the split hem, and besides being a fun twist on the flare, it can also make you look taller.

Split hem pants usually feature a long, straight leg with a slit either on the front or side, depending on the location of the seam. Similar to cropped pants for petite women, a split hem visually elongates the leg and gives everyone a peek at your shoes.

RELATED: Cargo Pants Dominated the Copenhagen Fashion Week Runways, But With A Modern Twist

The trend covers everything from activewear to workwear. Split hems can be found on weekend-ready casual jeans and leggings, office-appropriate suiting, or dressier versions you can pair with heels for a night out.

This versatile pair of front-split leggings from Old Navy comes in black and sizes XS to 4X—plus regular, tall, and petite lengths. This affordable pair features an elasticized high-rise waistband that sits at the belly button, vertical center seams at the front, and an eight-inch slit at the center hem. These soft-washed cotton jersey leggings are comfortable and stretchy with an easy pull-on style.

Available in both regular and petite sizes, the black faux leather split hem pants from Halogen are perfect for a night out when you want to feel relaxed but look chic. Made from polyester, these super cute pants feature a 13-inch leg opening, and they hit just above the ankle.

The Columnist High-Waisted Front-Vent Straight Pants from Express come in black or butterscotch and sizes XXS to XL. Featuring a pull-on waistband and comfortable rayon/nylon/spandex fabric, these pants have a sexy silhouette with a front vented hem. They can be easily styled with anything from an oversized sweatshirt to a t-shirt with a cropped blazer or a fuzzy sweater (it is finally sweater weather!).

The split hem pants from NYDJ[affiliate-link] are a high-rise style that comes in a charcoal diamond pattern, feature pull-on closure, and are made from rayon, nylon, and spandex. These pants have a skinny fit with a more subtle split hem compared to the other pants on the list.

These [affiliate-link id="2680153"]ultra-high-rise jeans from Calvin Klein feature a split hem on the side, and a zipper enclosure. Available in two washes, Colorado and Mediterranean, they come in sizes 24 to 32 and hit just above the ankle. They’re perfect for showing off your new fall boots.

Hallelujah, Oversized Blazers Are The ‘It’ Item This Fall And They’re So Easy To Wear https://www.suggest.com/oversized-blazers-fashion-trend/2678722/ Sat, 01 Oct 2022 21:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2678722 A Black woman with long braids wears a black suit

It’s no secret that with fashion, everything old is new again. We’ve seen the return of throwback styles including mom jeans, bomber jackets, cargo pants, and mullet dresses. Now, one more throwback trend has hit the scene, and it’s one of the most practical yet. It’s the oversized blazer, and it’s having a moment.

Oversized blazers are everywhere, and they definitely echo their ’80s and ’90s predecessors. But the current versions are a bit roomier and most skip the exaggerated shoulder pads of yore, making them comfortable, modern, and fresh.

RELATED: Hope You Didn’t Get Rid Of Your Circa 1991 Bubble Skirt—Here’s How To Style One In 2022

With their loose fit, oversized blazers can be worn over virtually anything. Their size allows them to slip comfortably over sweaters or hoodies, and they look chic over graphic tees for a relaxed yet refined look.

The oversized blazer is a trans-seasonal staple that’s perfect for right now when one day it’s sweltering and the next it’s chilly. It’s also a great piece year-round—keep one handy for nights that turn chilly and office days with overenthusiastic air conditioning.

If you’re unsure how to handle the extra roominess of this vintage trend, remember that proportion is key. Play with styling an oversized blazer with a t-shirt or leggings, adding a belt, wearing form-fitting pants, or a body-con skirt.

Make this trend yours by borrowing one from a man in your life or scouring thrift stores for a vintage find. But in case you don’t have luck, there are plenty of options for buying a new one. Here, we’ve collected some of our favorites!

Everlane products are designed to last, and this stylish blazer made with recycled Italian wool is no exception. Featuring classic flap pockets and cuff buttons, this oversized blazer is available in both gray herringbone and glen plaid.

Good American has a hard time keeping this double-breasted blazer in stock. This classic black style is roomy and comfortable, but also made of a compact double-knit stretch fabric that holds you in and smooths you out.

In several solid colors, The Drop, which offers limited-edition pieces designed by influencers, has an affordable, polished, long silhouette blazer with a notched collar and a single-button closure.

These Oxford Shoes Designed For Emma Watson Will Be A Staple In Your Fall Wardrobe https://www.suggest.com/nisolo-emma-oxford-perfect-fall-shoe/2678271/ Fri, 30 Sep 2022 20:55:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2678271 woman seated wearing d'Orsay Oxford shoes with feet on her chair

It’s no secret that Emma Watson has great taste, from her casual street-style looks to head-turning haute couture. And it’s her love of refined, feminine fashion with an emphasis on sustainability that so often places the British actress on best-dressed lists.

In honor of her preppy-chic sensibility, sustainable shoe brand Nisolo designed an Oxford for her and we’re in love.

For a fashion-forward, preppy aesthetic, score Watson’s elegant and timeless Emma d’Orsay Oxfords, just in time for fall.

Nisolo’s Ethically-Made Footwear

Among so many competitors, Nisolo stands out for its exceptional quality, style, and comfort, plus the brand raises the bar when it comes to its social and environmental commitment.

The fashion industry contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and has a sketchy history with labor infractions. Nisolo is trying not to be part of the problem by paying living wages and offsetting 100% of the carbon emissions from their entire supply chain by protecting trees from deforestation in the Amazon Basin.

Nisolo not only strives for sustainability in the production sense, but the brand also designs its shoes to last a lifetime. Nisolo emphasizes high-quality capsule pieces like the elegant Emma d’Orsay Oxfords—a timeless style you can incorporate into your wardrobe for years to come.

The Emma d’Orsay Oxfords are classy, elegant, and anything but basic. The style is a modern take on the classic oxford constructed with breathable leather, a waterproof leather upper, and shock-absorbing cushioned insoles. Plus, an internal elastic adds comfort and makes them easy to put on and take off.

Emma d’Orsay Oxfords come in a variety of colors including almond, brandy, black, and grey. According to reviews, the shoe tends to run small, so they recommend ordering a full size larger than you normally wear to ensure a comfortable fit.

The minimal design adds prep-school flair to any outfit and is ideal for year-round looks. Wear them with a flowy midi skirt or pair them with a trendy oversized blazer. No matter how you choose to rock them, you can feel good knowing you invested in a quality product from a brand that is kind to the planet and the people on it.

This Best Selling Amazon Midi Skirt Is The Perfect Seasonal Transition Piece (And It Has Pockets!) https://www.suggest.com/best-selling-amazon-midi-skirt/2678318/ Thu, 29 Sep 2022 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2678318 EXLURA midi skirt on a graphic background

The weather transition from summer to fall can turn the simple act of picking out an outfit into an anxiety-inducing activity. To prepare for cool, crisp mornings that give way to sunny and warm afternoons—which quickly turn back into cool evenings—layering is an essential wardrobe strategy. And to do this effectively, you’ve gotta have the right pieces.

We found a great skirt for this weather transition, and it happens to be an Amazon best-seller with thousands of five-star reviews. Shoppers note that it’s lightweight and comfortable, and it comes in a number of different colors and patterns.

RELATED: Amazon’s Best Selling Dress Is The Perfect Summer-To-Fall Transition Piece

This versatile midi-skirt can be worn with sandals and a t-shirt or layered with tights and ankle boots for those cooler fall days. Like we said, it can make for a fantastic seasonal transition piece—and it has pockets!

EXLURA’s high-waist midi skirt is a super cute piece that is a top seller on Amazon. It’s available in 17 different colors/patterns, and in sizes small (2/4) through 2XL (16/18). Depending on your height and the size you purchase, this skirt can be worn as a maxi or midi.

The color options include black, mustard, white, pink, and blue, and the pattern options range from animal print to floral to polka dot.

The flowy EXLURA skirt has an A-line shape with pleats, an elegant frill hem, an elastic waistband, and two pockets—big enough to hold your phone and keys. It can be dressed up for date night, a special event, or a holiday party. Or, you can easily dress it down for casual outings.

While it’s gotten thousands of positive reviews, it is important to note some potential drawbacks. The skirt is made from polyester, which while it aids in its affordability, it’s also not the highest quality fabric out there. This synthetic fabric isn’t always the most comfortable for those with sensitive skin as it can be coarser than natural fabric depending on the manufacturing process. Additionally, some shoppers noted the fabric is on the thin side, so for extra coverage, you may want to consider a slip.

That said, over 9,600 shoppers rated the EXLURA midi skirt five stars.

“I was looking for a new work look and this skirt fit the bill. It’s fun and flattering! I didn’t realize it had pockets until the skirt came in! Love it and am considering buying another,” shared one happy customer.

Another raved, “This is such a great skirt! No wrinkles—just folded it, packed it in my bag for vacation and it was beautiful. Very becoming. Great buy for the money.”

So, if you’re in the market to refresh your fall wardrobe a bit, the EXLURA midi skirt may just be what you’ve been looking for.

Hope You Didn’t Get Rid Of Your Circa 1991 Bubble Skirt—Here’s How To Style One In 2022 https://www.suggest.com/bubble-skirt-fashion-trend/2678159/ Wed, 28 Sep 2022 21:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2678159 Two models wearing bubble skirt dresses to fashion events.

Bomber jackets, high-low dresses, and cargo pants have all returned to the trend landscape in 2022. For Gen Xers, it’s clear that ’80s and ’90s fashion is having a moment.

The latest recycled trend to put on your shopping list for fall, according to New York Fashion Week, is the off-beat bubble skirt.

Princess Diana famously paired one with a white double-breasted blazer in 1987. The style lived on for a few years, as one of our editors wore a bubble dress to her sorority formal in 1991: It was strapless and pink on the top, black and bubbled on the bottom.

For their spring and summer 2023 collections, designers Ulla Johnson, Khaite, Proenza Schouler, and Duaphinette presented new, modern versions of the bubble skirt. They’ve borrowed from the more outsized versions of the early 90s for more subdued and very wearable silhouettes, making them a bit easier to style with pieces that are currently in your wardrobe.

A bubble-skirt dress could be perfect for your next dressed-up event, especially in a joyful red hue—and it’s never too early to start planning for holiday parties. The best part about this style is that from the waist down, your movement is pretty much unrestricted, and lines from undergarments or anything else are not a concern.

This khaki style is so casual you could wear it with sneakers or boots, or dress it up with a blazer and heels (a la Lady Diana) and wear it to work on a dinner date.

This one is more of a splurge, but Cynthia Rowley can be trusted to make high-quality, beautiful clothes that you’ll keep in your closet for a lifetime. Pair this one with a fuzzy sweater and boots for a winter white look (it also comes in purple and black).

This may be the most wearable of the bunch. Throw on a white t-shirt and slides or sneakers for a not-boring casual look, or pair it with platforms and a sparkly tank and you’re ready for your next dinner party or special event.

The look may not be for everyone: It won’t be the item you reach for if your goal is to blend in. But if you feel like getting a little adventurous with your style, bubble skirts or dresses could be a fun new addition to your everyday or special-occasion wardrobe lineup.

Whatever the reason, bomber jackets have been all over the runways this season. And they’re a welcome sight for Gen X and anyone else who never stopped wearing them.

Along with other ’80s staples like cargo pants and mullet dresses, bomber jackets are stealing the show on runways and red carpets alike. And as we transition into fall, the bomber jacket is a wardrobe essential. They can be lightweight but warm enough for those cooler fall evenings.

Play with silhouettes and styles to find one that feels perfect for you.

‘Dopamine Dressing’ Is Taking TikTok By Storm, And It’s A Trend We Can Get Behind https://www.suggest.com/dopamine-dressing-science-and-mood/2672521/ Sat, 10 Sep 2022 23:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2672521 woman with long straight hair wearing bright colors dances and smiles

Fashion trends often involve a particular silhouette or “it” color for the season. But social media is telling me that one of the newest fashion trends this season is much more involved.

If you’ve seen celebrities and models all over your feed dressed in neon colors, chances are you’ve stumbled up on this trend, too. It’s called “dopamine dressing,” and it’s giving us nostalgic vibes, taking us back to the colors and patterns of the ’80s and early ’90s.

What Is Dopamine Dressing?

Dopamine dressing is a TikTok trend that doesn’t hinge on a certain style of clothing or any particular color. It’s all about enhancing your mood by wearing bright, patterned clothing, which is an idea that has some actual science behind it.

Dr. Dawnn Karenfa, fashion psychologist and author of the book Dress Your Best Life, coined the term “dopamine dressing.” The concept is rooted in her theory that wearing a specific combination of styles, colors, and patterns can actually trigger increased levels of dopamine—a neurotransmitter linked to pleasure, motivation, and learning.

RELATED: One And Done Outfits Are The Latest Fashion Trend We Can 100% Get Behind

Dopamine is extremely important in our everyday lives because it sends messages between nerve cells, and it plays a role in how we feel pleasure. Dopamine is spread along four major pathways in the brain, helping us focus, strive, and find things interesting. It also has an influence on thinking and planning.

Some people exercise or eat a decadent dessert to get their dopamine fix. But in her Ted Talk, Dr. Karen argued that all you need to get that chemically-induced sense of pleasure and mood enhancement is to wear the right clothing.

Originally, Dr. Karen imagined that her idea would take hold in rehab spaces because dopamine dressing can be used as a therapeutic technique for trauma and addiction healing. She also expected it to become popular in the world of streetwear and hip hop.

But the trend has spread much wider than she ever dreamed and has been adopted by broader populations. Forget boosting confidence and self-esteem with designer labels or a dress that fits like a glove—it’s all about choosing clothes that will make your brain happy.

Examples Of Dopamine Dressing

We’ve seen Gen Z and millennials wearing bright pastels and neon colors, which definitely gives us some serious nostalgia (show of hands—who remembers Hypercolor and Cross Colours?). TikTok also shows that Gen Xers like myself are getting on board.

RELATED: How To Style These Re-Emerging Gen X Fashion Trends Without Resorting To Gen Z Aesthetics

The most common examples of dopamine dressing involve the use of bright colors and fun accessories. User @thedressfiend said her bright A-line skirt reminded her of a Dr. Seuss book, and tapping into positive childhood memories certainly fits the bill of this style trend.

User @digthosecurves also relied on childhood nostalgia when choosing a Care Bears dress to pair with her new bright pink harness. Other accessories such as a rainbow chocker and Care Bear earrings rounded out the look.

The trend doesn’t have to be that dramatic, though. If you’re used to wearing all neutrals, try adding a pop or color or looking for added details like a fun print or interesting neckline like user @room.334 demonstrates.

@room.334

Okay turns out my pile of cardigans was deceiving and I didn’t have quite as many as I thought. #cardigan #sweater #closettryon #dopaminedressing #colorfulstyle #vintagestyle

A simple monochrome outfit, which is very popular with many celebrities (including Kate Middleton), is another simple way to address this trend. User @mercadolivre demonstrates this well, with a bright lip gloss adding the perfect finishing touch to the look.

How To Make Dopamine Dressing Work For You

Part of dopamine dressing is pushing yourself out of your comfort zone to try something new, and that can mean different things for different people. Personal aesthetics, cultural background, and life circumstances all contribute to someone’s style.

You don’t have to buy a whole new neon wardrobe or dress head to toe in rainbows if that’s too far of a leap for you. Dip your toe in by layering one bright item from your closet, or experiment with colorful accessories. If you find you don’t have much color in your wardrobe, hitting thrift and vintage shops is a great place to find inexpensive bright pieces.

Playing around with textures, prints, and clothing styles is another way to experiment with this trend as well. If you usually opt for fitted pants, try on a pair of palazzo pants instead. If you normally wear cotton or polyester, give velvet or corduroy a go. Love solid colors? Maybe a floral top is just the thing to try.

Science shows that novelty can enhance mood, lower stress, and help you see things in a different light. Turns out retail therapy has more benefits than we realized.

Knock Your Socks Off: Are Bombas Really Worth The Hype? https://www.suggest.com/bombas-socks-review/2672337/ Fri, 09 Sep 2022 19:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2672337 Bombas women's merino wool adventure calf socks

Out of all the clothing items that I could worry about, socks are at the bottom of the list. As long as they aren’t holey or painfully tight, I’ll probably rock ‘em. (Oversized Hanes socks for men that I stole from my husband’s dresser included.)

So, when I first heard about Bombas, I wasn’t particularly eager to try them. I figured there was no way they were actually better than my go-to crew socks from a plastic bag. That is, of course, until I started talking to my coworkers.

After hearing their rave reviews, my self-proclaimed sock cynicism has started to fade. Here’s why I ended up buying Bombas for myself after all.

What’s So Brilliant About Bombas?

Bombas is more than a sock, undie, and shirt company. It was founded on the philosophy of donating to those in need. For every item Bombas sells, they donate the same item to the homeless. So far, Bombas has donated 50 million items to more than 3,500 communities—and they’re looking to do even more.

Still, as much as I love a good cause, I remember the flimsiness of my TOMS flats from 10 years ago. Given Bombas’ price tag, I was still a bit hesitant to jump on the bandwagon. What really sold me were the results of the brand’s years-long R&D process.

Bombas took all of the annoying things about socks—the things I assumed I just had to deal with—and fixed them. The company took extra time to ensure its socks were pesky problems-free. You’ll find no thin, hole-prone fabric, pilling, or painful toe seams here.

Bombas socks feature extra-long staple cotton, an incredibly soft, smooth, breathable, and durable fabric. Long-staple cotton resists shrinkage and lasts through multiple washes and wears. The socks also feature a cushioned footbed and honeycomb arch support system.

Slightly less skeptical, I reached out to my coworkers who have raved about their own Bombas socks.

Are They Actually Worth The Hype?

Suggest’s COO, Erika Leonard, says she now has so many pairs of Bombas that she’s gotten rid of almost every other pair she owns. “I love that they’re cute and comfortable when I’m working from home all day,” she told me. “Other socks I’ve owned get scratchy or start to wear thin after multiple wears. But my Bombas have held up for a long, long time!” (Three to four years, to be exact.)

Leonard says that as a frequent walker and runner (both for sport and chasing after her kiddo), she loves that Bombas don’t slip or cause issues in her shoes. “I have pairs that work great in tennis shoes, thicker socks perfect for skiing or hiking, and pairs with grippers on the bottom, so I don’t slide on my wood floors when chasing my toddler around.”

Our CEO, Kasey Grelle, is also a huge Bombas fan. She was looking for socks that “would hold up to the rough and tumble nature of little boys. Bombas fit the bill. Plus, her boys love that Bombas’ kids’ socks have L and R markings, so they always know which sock is which. Grelle also loves that the matching sock sets keep her from “always searching for that one elusive patterned sock.”

But it’s not just her boys who love their Bombas—she does, too. “I discovered that I can buy socks for my son that actually fit my feet. So, I’ve just been stealing his socks and wearing those. I really like the tight compression and cushion they give my feet. We’ve burned through dozens and dozens of socks in our house, but from here on out, we’re only buying Bombas.”

VP of Marketing, Anna Callahan, is also a fan. “Full disclosure, I did get them as a gift,” she told me. “But they are really great! They’re calf-length, stay up, and don’t slouch down. But they aren’t so tight that I have sock indentations when I take them off. I’ve had my pair for probably two years and haven’t noticed any major wear. I will wear these into the ground.”

All Day, Work Or Play

After hearing three for three stellar reviews from people I actually know and trust, I was sold. I started looking into my own Bombas buys. But because it can be kind of overwhelming (how many options for socks are there, anyway?!), I took the handy Bombas Sock Quiz.

I found that my perfect Bombas sock is its Merino Wool Calf Sock. I have a couple of Merino wool sweaters, and I am very much looking forward to having that soft, cozy goodness wrapped around my feet. In fact, it’s possible that Bombas’ low-rise socks might even convince me to buy a pair of sneakers for the first time in years.

Bombas socks aren’t just made to look good and last—they’re made to feel good and to do good for the world around us. I was skeptical about the social media hype. But after water cooler chats with my coworkers, I’m eagerly awaiting the delivery of my first (of many) pair of Bombas socks.

These Luxurious Moisture-Wicking Thermals Will Be Your New Cold Weather Go-To https://www.suggest.com/colorful-long-underwear-for-women-thermajane/2672124/ Wed, 07 Sep 2022 21:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2672124 thermajane long johns in teal, bright yellow, purple, and bright pink

It might still be warm outside, but we all know how quickly the weather can change. In the midwest where I live, we have a saying: “If you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes.” Temperatures can change just as quickly across the country, especially during the summer-to-fall transition.

Before we know it, we’ll be bundling up for hayrides through the pumpkin patch, long chilly walks down city streets, or even just for movie night indoors. While sweatpants and oversized sweaters are one option, sometimes something a little more fitted is optimal for layering.

If you’re looking for warmth without the bulk, we found a much-welcomed upgrade from the traditional long underwear your grandparents wore.

Welcome To The Warm World Of ThermaJane

Thermajane is a brand that offers luxurious, tag-free thermals in an array of bright and neutral colors. Their thermal underwear provides extra warmth and coziness with top-notch heat retention that prevents your body heat from escaping.

The ultra-soft base layer is lined with fleece for extra softness, so not only do these thermals give you protection against the cold, but they are also super cozy.

They also have a moisture-wicking feature that will keep you dry and odor-free all day long—whether you’re hitting the trail for a winter run or staying warm while working from home.

They can be worn under other clothes or as a pajama alternative—you can even wear them on their own. The bottoms can easily double as leggings and the top is perfect alone or layered under a vest or flannel.

Thermajane long johns have thousands of positive reviews on Amazon, which is what first caught our eye. But the one that sold us was from a woman who went weeks without heat in the dead of winter.

“I did wear it when our central heating broke in winter and took a couple of weeks to fix. I told my husband to hold out for the best quote because I could go a long long time without being cold. To be honest, I loved having the opportunity to get my cold gear out, and this base layer kept me toasty until we could obtain 20 quotes and negotiate the best deal on the new boiler!”

Bottom line—these thermals are soft, versatile, look good, come in 13 different colors, and can save you money on home improvements! How cool is that?

This Clever Method For Tying Your Button-Down Shirt Is the Easiest Way To Level Up Your Summer-To-Fall Wardrobe https://www.suggest.com/carla-rockmore-shirt-tying-trick/2671999/ Wed, 07 Sep 2022 16:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2671999 Carla Rockmore showcasing her shirt typing tip

Carla Rockmore has become a style guru for women of all ages, especially Gen X women. The 54-year-old stylist/jewelry designer started posting style advice on social media for a creative outlet during the pandemic.

Her videos became popular quickly, many times featuring easy tips that would elevate any outfit. We particularly enjoyed her advice on packing a capsule wardrobe for a long (awaited) trip.

Rockmore is fabulous and fifty, but she is anything but frumpy. And she encourages other women to express themselves through fashion. She’s often been called the Carrie Bradshaw of TikTok and her personal style cements this.

Summer-To-Fall Transition

In a post from July, Rockmore laments about the “175-degree weather” in Dallas. Finding clothes that are comfortable (enough) to wear while outdoors but still account for the blasting AC indoors can be challenging. As we move into fall, chilly mornings but warm afternoons and evenings present a similar struggle.

RELATED: Amazon’s Best Selling Dress Is The Perfect Summer To Fall Transition Piece

To fashionably solve this issue, Rockmore starts her look with a breezy but structured navy shirtdress from her Amazon collection (that is sadly currently sold out). The off-the-shoulder cotton midi-dress is a beautiful summer piece that, like any sundress, can easily transition into fall with the right jacket and pair of shoes.

After picking out a few fun accessories (which you can shop from her store), Rockmore grabs an oversized button-down shirt from Danish designer Britt Sisseck. Keeping in the same color family and fabric as her dress, Rockmore notes that as is, the billowing shirt covers up too much of the dress and causes a “wah wah” silhouette.

Here’s where the magic comes in. Rockmore takes the front two corners of the shirt, pulls them behind her back just above the waist, and ties them together.

“It looks like a bolero from the front,” Rockmore gushes. “The beautiful dress is not hidden in any way. And from the back, it’s like the Valentino cape I just saw going down the fall 2022 runways.”

And it does look like all of those things. We love the concept of taking everyday items and styling them in such a way that they feel new and innovative, which this tip definitely does. Plus, not only does it work with any summer dress you may wish to wear into fall, but easily with a short sleeve or sleeveless shirt as well.

Finally, Rockmore adds some “tchotchkes” like vintage bangles and a large Christian Dior bag to finish the look. It’s such an easy outfit to recreate!

We Found The Perfect Pair Of Booties For Fall, Snag Them Before They Sell Out  https://www.suggest.com/frye-alton-chelsea-booties-overview/2670342/ Sun, 28 Aug 2022 18:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2670342 Fryle Alton Chelsea booties for fall

Can you feel it? There’s a slight breeze in the air that wasn’t there before. That’s right, the seasons are a-changing. Soon the leaves will start changing, the days will get shorter, and all of our favorite fall activities will begin.

And with the changing seasons, our wardrobes will begin to transition. Say goodbye to your summer dresses, shorts, and slingbacks. Here come the cardigans, leggings, and booties, and we’re so ready.

Classic booties are the perfect footwear for the transition to fall and throughout winter. They’re a cool weather staple that never goes out of style. Comfortable, cute, and sleek, these boots will easily become a favorite in your fall wardrobe.

RELATED: Shoppers Say They Can ‘Dance The Night Away’ In These Seriously Comfy And Stylish Heels

We know it can be hard to find the perfect boots though, we’ve been there. Some booties are too stiff or uncomfortable. Others have too much fluff or the heel is way too high. And many are cheaply made and have to be replaced every season.

Luckily, we’ve stumbled upon the best booties for the transition to fall and beyond.

The Perfect Wear-It-With-Everything Boot

These Frye Alton Chelsea Booties are everything, and they can be worn with just about everything.

Dressed up or down, these boots are quality-made and worth every penny to last you for years. We love them with a cute fall dress or just high-waisted jeans and a graphic t-shirt.

Italian leather lines the booties and provides the outsole while oiled suede comprises the outer shell. There’s a sleek zipper side closure, and the heels measure 2 1/4 inches. Currently available in black and grey, these booties range in sizes from 5.5 to 11. These long-lasting boots will elevate your style while keeping you comfy.

One customer stated, “Hands down my favorite booties. [They’re] so comfortable and I walk in them all day [with] no problem. The heel height is just perfect. High enough to give me a lift but not too high to cause any discomfort.” Another customer raved about the fit, stating that they fit “like a glove.”

Finding the right boots can be difficult, but we’ve done all the legwork for you. According to reviews, these booties are flexible and don’t even need to be “broken in” like so many other boots.

They’re worth the investment, not just for the impeccable craftsmanship, but especially since they won’t go “out of style” like, ever. Chelsea boots have been around since the Victorian era and saw a big resurgence during the 1960s in Europe, we have a feeling even in the coming years they will continue to be a cool-weather staple.

Cargo Pants Dominated Runways At Copenhagen Fashion Week But With A Modern Twist https://www.suggest.com/cargo-pants-are-back-in-style/2670434/ Sat, 27 Aug 2022 19:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2670434 Ganni cargo pants in green

New York fashion week began in 1943 during World War II. Other cities followed with their own fashion weeks: Milan began in 1958, Paris in 1973, and London in 1984.

Copenhagen didn’t enter the scene until 2006, and while it might be a relative newcomer, the Danish city has made a name for itself as the edgier, cooler little sister of the bunch.

Copenhagen Fashion Week guidelines require that all designers presenting at the event adhere to 18 sustainability standards, which cover everything from human rights to banning designers who destroy unsold clothes (practiced by some brands to preserve exclusivity). Organizers have set an example for the industry by banning fur and working towards making the event zero waste.

RELATED: Ashley Graham Shares Experience Walking At Milan Fashion Week Postpartum

The Nordic event has introduced to the fashion world influential brands including Ganni (check out their cute green cargoes, which are available now), Gestuz, and Holzweiler. These Scandanavian designers had something in common at the fall 2023 show: All three showcased a throwback, sometimes polarizing, wardrobe staple of yore. Remember cargo pants? Whether you loved them or hated them in your youth, these new versions are pretty cute.

The Utilitarian Pant Is Back

Why do we love cargo pants? Let us count the ways! First, there are (all the) pockets. Women’s pants have historically been stingy about offering usable pockets, but cargoes give us some functional options.

Also, they can be quite roomy. So, fair warning, if you’re a Millennial or Gen Xer who’s accustomed to skinny jeans, cargoes might take some getting used to. But next time you’re shopping, slide out of those skinnies and give them a try. You might be pleasantly surprised by how comfy cargo pants can be.

That said, the newest iteration is not as baggy nor as low-waisted as those TLC rocked in the ’90s. You can find everything from cargo joggers to relaxed-fit linen cargo pants. And if you’re really committed to a slim silhouette, you can find skinny cargoes too.

These Norma Kamali joggers are relaxed enough for a work-from-home day and cute enough for a weekend outing. They also come in camouflage if you want to take the military theme a step further.

They don’t get much more classic than these 100% cotton cargoes. And if you’re not model tall, the length on these will be just right.

Leave it to Ralph Lauren to perfectly mix denim with cargo styling. The bow belt gives these otherwise masculine pants a feminine flair.

Talk about pockets for days on these trendy cargo pants from Anthropologie. The earthy cedar color is perfect for fall, while the high rise fits just right.

From Bright Colors To Banned Catsuits: 7 Times Serena Williams Used Fashion To Tear Down Tennis’ Elitist Ways https://www.suggest.com/serena-williams-tennis-outfits-tear-down-elitism/2669230/ Fri, 26 Aug 2022 21:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2669230 Serena Williams celebrating point on tennis court

Serena Williams has been slaying on the tennis court since the mid-’90s. While the sports star is considered a fashion icon today, the tennis world wasn’t always as kind during her career. Williams has faced sexism, racism, and criticism of everything from her hair to her outfit choices for decades.

Despite this pressure, Williams has always been fearless and powerful on and off the court. Her fashion choices follow suit, incorporating bold colors and edgier aesthetics. This courageously flies in the face of the “tennis whites” tradition of only wearing white on the court.

Moreover, the sport itself is predominately made up of white players. Williams made waves just by being a Black woman in the sport. She elevated a sport often forgotten by the mainstream and brought in a new fanbase. Williams also brought attention to the rigid elitism of the tennis world, opening the door for young girls of color to explore a once exclusionary sport.

27 years after her first professional match, Williams has skyrocketed to global icondom. Indeed, she’s an inspiration to athletes, mothers, and women alike. And frankly, no one has ever made smashing records and making tennis history look this good.

Serena Stuns On The Tennis Courts

First up is Serena’s infamous catsuit. While the look is stunning, Williams wore this bodysuit to the 2018 French Open for health reasons. The tennis star has a history of blood clots and had developed a pulmonary embolism after the birth of her daughter, Olympia. The bodysuit encouraged blood flow during her matches.

Despite this, the French Tennis Federation banned the catsuit. In an interview with Tennis Magazine, federation president Bernard Giudicelli said, “you have to respect the game and the place.” But considering Williams’ long-held dedication to the game, these comments seem transparently elitist.

In 2004, Serena warmed up wearing knee-high “boots” and easy-to-move-in shorts at the US Open. However, she wasn’t allowed to wear the shoes during matches.

Sporting a pink and white Nike dress at the US Open in 2016, Serena showcased her love of bright colors. The pleated dress was accented by pink armbands and tennis shoes. This was her “daytime” look. During her evening matches, she rocked a black dress with pink pleats.

Williams’ 2018 US Open outfit is the perfect combination of elegant and edgy, just like the athlete herself. Williams wore a custom-made leather Nike jacket, lavender tutu, and matching headband to keep her curls in place.

We love everything about this outfit! Williams wore this all-green ensemble to the French Open in 2021. Not only does the color look amazing on her skin tone, but it also pays homage to the Roland Garros stadium and her daughter. From the sneakers to her cropped jacket, we think this outfit is *chef’s kiss* perfection.

In addition to her love of bright colors and feminine silhouettes, Williams also rocked several gorgeous patterns. At the Rothesay International Eastbourne tournament in 2022, Williams wore knee-length black leggings and an abstract printed Nike dress. She won in the doubles match alongside Ons Jabeur of Tunisia.

Clavicles Are The New Cleavage—Say Hello To The Sexy Alternative To The Plunging Necklines Of Your 20s https://www.suggest.com/off-the-shoulder-tops-cleavage-baring-tops-alternative/2669288/ Thu, 25 Aug 2022 18:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2669288 black woman wearing pink off shoulder top and khakis

As we transition into new phases of life, our wardrobes tend to follow suit. Changing bodies and life stages mean we’re attracted to new styles. Pieces that were once go-to’s are now a big no-go.

It can be difficult to find fashion that makes us feel good in our bodies, and so many designers target a younger demographic, leaving us feeling forgotten in midlife and beyond.

For whatever reason, the cleavage-baring tops that once made me feel sexy now make me feel exposed and uncomfortable.

If you still rock a deep v-neck like it’s nobody’s business, then power to you, sister. But if you’re like me and looking for ways to feel sexy and confident but also comfortable, consider ditching the cleavage and celebrating your clavicle.

Off-shoulder tops that expose your clavicle—AKA collarbone—and upper shoulders can be even more alluring than major cleavage. Baring your shoulders can be feminine, sensual, and a less-obvious alternative to a plunging neckline.

Off-the-shoulder tops aren’t just sexy, they’re also practical. Bend over without fear of offering a free peepshow, enjoy a little extra coverage in chilly rooms, and feel breezy with a loose fit through the torso.

It may mean that you’ll need to also embrace the strapless bra—or not. Even if you’d typically never go without a bra, a billowy, off-shoulder top made of substantial fabric might make you feel OK about going braless. No one has to know (and really, who cares if they do)!

RELATED: 6 Brands We Love For Promoting Age-Representation In Fashion

This Trina Turk top not only offers a pop of cheerful pink but is also made of mostly recycled polyester (plus it’s marked down!), so you can feel good about your purchase in more ways than one. It’s both elegant and trendy, and can be worn tucked in or not. Pair it with a neutral pair of pants, or with another bright color for a lively, color-blocked vibe.

Daniel Rainn’s DR2 line’s off-the-shoulder blouse features a ruched elastic neckline that stretches from shoulder to shoulder. The polyester blouse is light without being sheer and thin enough to tuck in or leave out of waistbands. This versatile blouse is available in a muted floral or warm earth tone print.

LuckyMore’s off-the-shoulder bell sleeve top is perfect for showing off the collarbones while still providing light coverage on the arms. Its stylish tie detail adds an extra bit of movement to the flowy top, creating a narrow illusion in the midsection. This breezy blouse is available in a whopping 19 colors and patterns, including everything from classic black to a paisley-esque pattern in deep red.

Was this top bought new or thrifted from an eclectic vintage store in SoHo? No one will be able to tell with this timeless peasant-style top from Velvet by Graham & Spencer. This effortlessly chic top can be worn off or on the shoulders for two completely different looks. And the free-flowing silhouette keeps you light and breezy (and covered) as the warm weather stretches into early fall.

It doesn’t get much more classic than Everleigh’s cinched waist off-the-shoulder blouse with small button details. The elastic waist cinches the midsection and adds movement to an otherwise breezy and soft silhouette. Delicate features like small black buttons and a keyhole neckline add a feminine touch to this versatile piece.

My wardrobe has been forever changed by flounce tops. They create an instant hourglass shape. (The wider fabric on the neckline is doing the trick, but it seems like black magic.) This casual off-the-shoulder flounce top comes in a wide variety of fun colors and styles so you can enjoy this waist-cinching, collarbone-framing top with any outfit.

‘This Is Bullsh*t:’ These Midlife Women Were Fed Up With Night Sweats, So They Created A Cooling PJ Line That Can Be Worn Anytime https://www.suggest.com/coolrevolution-pjs-review-laura-musall-interview/2667188/ Thu, 18 Aug 2022 22:35:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2667188 CoolRevolution PJs pants and shorts sets

After waking up from a particularly egregious bout of menopause night sweats, Laura Musall had just one thing to say: “This is bullsh*t.”

After texting her fellow 50-ish friends about it the next morning, she started crafting a solution for a problem they were all experiencing.

Thus, CoolRevolution was created. This innovative clothing line is designed by women in their 50s for women in their 50s. Musall wanted to make a product for women who work, run the house, care for family, and are sick and tired (literally) of menopause interfering with their sleep.

I recently spoke with her about CoolRevolution and its blending of comfort, style, and durability. Want to take a guess what she was wearing during the interview? (Hint: we feature it a little further down.)

‘I Used To Think They Were Exaggerating’

Prior to that fateful sweaty night, Musall told me that she used to think people were exaggerating when they talked about their hormonal night sweats. As she tried to find solutions for what she called “next level sweat,” she found there was little available.

“Then, I remembered that I bought my husband pajamas that were temperature-regulating,” Musall recalls. “And I thought, where are they for women? The more I looked, the madder I got. Why is it I can walk into Macy’s and buy cooling PJs for my husband—who does not have night sweats—and I can’t find anything?”

Of course, she found some things—namely, unattractive, unflattering, and largely uncomfortable things. She shared her (lack of) progress with her friends, who convinced her to start her own cooling pajama line.

Musall enlisted her friend Mindy Ford, one of the women in her original post-night sweat text chain. They then got in touch with women’s health experts, designers, and developers before moving on to the next, most important step: finding the right fabric.

RELATED: Stop The Night Sweats With These Genius Products That Help You Stay Cool While You Sleep

‘As Soon As We Put On That Fabric…’

Musall and Ford left their Indiana homebase for Chicago to start sourcing fabric, and the one they chose was love at first touch. “As soon as we put on that fabric, we were like, I think this is it.” They started putting it to the test.

After receiving samples from an Indiana seamstress, Musall and Ford exercised in their CoolRevolution PJs over (and over and over). “This is going to sound really gross, but I wore them multiple times to see how many days in a row I could sweat in them,” Musall laughs. “I just wanted to know.”

CoolRevolution’s fabric is a rayon blend of bamboo, cotton, and spandex. Musall said she and Ford fell in love with the sweat-wicking capabilities of this soft, silky fabric. Other “cooling” fabrics use waxy treatments to mimic breathability that degrade in the wash. Unlike its competitors, CoolRevolution’s high-quality blend promotes cooling airflow after countless washes.

In fact, Musall still wears the original samples she got in 2018. They’re that long-lasting. It’s even what she wore to our interview.

‘I’m Wearing It Right Now’

“I love our t-shirt, which I’m wearing right now,” Musall tells me. Creating clothing that was both comfortable and presentable in public was important to Musall and Ford. They wanted clothes that you could wear around the house, out to run errands, or even while shopping on 5th Avenue, as one happy customer reported.

Available in Teal, Wine, Mauve, Navy, Black, Raspberry, Bubble Gum, Gray, Red, Plum, & Blush.

CoolRevolution’s t-shirt is available in a v-neck or scoop-neck silhouette. Both styles are longer in the back than the front for extra coverage (because let’s be honest, leggings are the perfect lounge-around-the-house option). “You can wear it at night, you can wear it during the day. I’m guaranteeing you no one has ever thought, ‘I’m wearing my pajamas out,’” Musall says.

Women’s Cooling Capri Pajamas

$56 Shop Now at CoolRevolution

Available in Wine, Blush, Black, Teal, Navy/White Stripes, & Plum.

Musall is also a big fan of CoolRevolution capris. “I’m not a shorts person, especially in the summer. I love that [the capris] have a wide leg because if you start getting hot, it’s really easy to pull them up. They’re breezy. They have airflow. In the humidity, airflow is important.”

CoolRevolution’s capri pants have an elastic stay-in-place comfort waistband for all-day wear. Additionally, the pants feature pockets deep enough to hold your cell phone—score. These breezy bottoms are available in sizes XS through XXXL to ensure an optimal fit.

Finally, Musall tells me that she loves CoolRevolution’s tank tops“because they work really well under cardigans or jackets. So, you can still get the sweat-wicking from them when you wear them, whether it’s at night or during the day.”

RELATED: You’re Not Crazy, It’s Perimenopause Rage: Women Open Up About Their Experiences, And How To Spot It In Yourself

The CoolRevolution tank top arm holes are roomy without being too revealing. Moreover, they’re fitted along the shoulders and bust with a little more flow in the middle to create a universally flattering silhouette. Translation? Say hello to your new go-to tank.

A lot of clothing brands make big promises but few actually deliver. CoolRevolution is different because it was created to solve Musall’s own problem, and she sincerely hopes the pajamas will help others as well.

To be clear, Musall restates that “no clothing can stop night sweats. We can’t make them go away with clothing. However, it’s really important to know what you’re putting on your body. [The fabric] is what makes us different. It’s what you begin with. And we use a really high-quality fabric that will last over time. I think that’s really important.”

We’re all for anything that gives us more hours of continuous sleep, and fewer pajama changes during the night.

Style Influencer Carla Rockmore Shares Top Tips For Packing A Functional But Stylish Wardrobe For A Long Trip https://www.suggest.com/carla-rockmore-shares-wardrobe-packing-tips/2668510/ Wed, 17 Aug 2022 22:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2668510 Side by side images from Carla Rockmore's Instagram video on how to pack a wardrobe for a 10-day trip.

Carla Rockmore, a Dallas-based fashion maven, is the person to listen to if you are seeking exceptional styling advice.

Known as the Carrie Bradshaw of TikTok, this sensational 54-year-old covers a wide variety of fashion’s most trending topics. Whether Rockmore is giving fascinating history lessons or delving into fashion’s most perplexing challenges, she has plenty of advice to share. But what fans love most about Rockmore is that she emphasizes staying true to yourself when it comes to personal style. Embrace the things that make you feel fabulous.

It’s hard not to love this powerful message about self-expression. In addition, we love all of her helpful styling tips, especially her recent video on packing for long trips.

Packing A Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Without a doubt, one of the hardest things about packing for a long trip is planning your wardrobe. There can be a sense of overwhelm when you realize that weather, activities, and style dictate how and what you should bring. Of course, trying to pack strategically can also be at odds with those three pairs of shoes you just need to bring.

RELATED: Flight Attendant Shares Her Top 3 Packing Tips, And Her Last One Is Especially Genius

In a recent Instagram post, Carla Rockmore shares her advice to help travelers overcome this common dilemma.

In particular, Rockmore shared her wardrobe packing strategy for an upcoming 10-day trip to Europe.

Before tackling her suitcase, Rockmore follows this simple rule, “Start with a few pairs of comfortable shoes in neutrals.” As her grandfather used to say, “If you don’t have a good foundation, your building is going to fall.”

Choosing her shoes first ensures everything else falls into place. For example, the neon yellow shade in her running shoes is matched with the same color in a scarf and hat, demonstrating how seamless this tip is.

Rockmore focuses on packing a capsule wardrobe with no more than three or four base colors. For her trip to Europe, Rockmore opted to wear creams, navy, and black. Despite the different hues, the shades are easy to combine different tops and bottoms without fear of clashing.

According to her, everything else falls into place after she has finalized her shoes and color palette. And from here, there are a few extra tips to ensure your capsule wardrobe is still interesting.

Packing prints, she says, adds interest to solid basics. Textures and strategic pops of colors in accessories can also insert style and intrigue. And for those special evenings out, a glitzy accessory easily adds a touch of glamour.

Staying practical, she also grabs basic tees, long sleeves, and a must-have cropped jean jacket that can be paired with anything.

A final tip from the over-50 fashionista is that she always starts packing for a long trip a week before departure. By packing a week in advance, she says, she’ll be able to take a look at the weather and clothing rack and reassess her needs.

How Olivia Newton John’s Style Influenced A Generation Of Gen X Women https://www.suggest.com/olivia-newton-john-gen-x-style-influence/2668744/ Tue, 16 Aug 2022 21:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2668744 Olivia Newton-John onstage circa 1970s

The late but legendary Olivia Newton-John, born in 1948, might have technically been a boomer, but no other generation adored or was influenced by the Australian superstar quite like Gen X. As the actress and singer rose to stardom, she also solidified her place in our childhood memories.

This is due in no small part to her iconic role of Sandy in the 1978 movie Grease. From her perfectly preppy looks to the black leather bodysuit she wore in the finale, Newton-John was the first style icon for many of us.

But her influence didn’t stop with Grease. The star served up even more iconic looks throughout her career, blazing trails and setting trends through the ‘70s, ‘80s, and beyond.

Before there was Sandy, there was Sing Sing Sing. A 16-year-old Newton-John won the TV talent contest in 1964, kickstarting a successful music career. The singer embraced the hip fashion of the early ‘70s, including oversized glasses, fur-lined polo coats, and a wolf cut—decades before we would even call it that.

As neutral earth tones made way for vivid color palettes, Newton-John followed suit. Her onstage ensembles were as dazzling as the performance itself, and this shimmery lilac leather combo is certainly no exception. She also grew out her shaggy chop into a voluminous golden blonde that was perfectly on-trend for the mid-’70s.

In 1978, Grease was released, and Newton-John cemented herself in international icondom. And with a wardrobe like that, how could she not? The bouncy perm, the catsuits, the scarves, the bold lips—she encouraged us to embrace our femininity in all its daring, sexy, timeless glory.

Then came Xanadu, an equally delightful movie musical often overshadowed by its Rydell High predecessor. Newton-John had her fair share of iconic looks in this film, too—including this fringe and knee-high boot ensemble. It was campy, flirty, and fun: three major style points of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s.

With the ‘80s came Olivia’s classic hit, Physical. She rocked neon athletic wear and, of course, the classic forehead sweatband in her music video. But she kept up her 1980s style off-screen, too. In a 1982 performance in Chicago, Newton-John swapped her sweatband for blue eyeshadow and rocked a teased, textured hairstyle.

Newton-John continued to embody the trends of the day into the ‘90s, trading in her spandex for loose-fitting leisure suits and a more subdued, shoulder-length haircut. (Complete with her iconic bangs, of course—when you know what works, you know what works.)

No one was immune to the at-times-chaotic fashion of the early 2000s, not even Olivia Newton-John. Still, she managed to make these mismatched, asymmetrical trends look polished, classy, and chic.

Olivia Newton-John passed away peacefully in her California home after a decades-long battle with breast cancer. We’ll not only remember her for her classic movie roles, music videos, and fashion, but we’ll also remember her activism, compassion, and that trademark, million-watt smile.

One And Done Outfits Are The Latest Fashion Trend We Can 100% Get Behind https://www.suggest.com/one-and-done-outfits-fashion-trend/2668019/ Thu, 11 Aug 2022 22:35:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2668019 A woman walking down a city street in a navy jumpsuit.

We make choices all day, every day. Sometimes choosing an outfit is the last thing we want to do. Granted, leggings and a t-shirt are comfortable, but sometimes we want to look a little more fashion forward. We love dresses too (the ease! the comfort!) but they can leave us feeling a little exposed, not to mention then we have to deal with the dreaded thigh rub. Luckily our old pals, the jumpsuit and the romper, are back.

We love these one-and-done outfits that take little to no brainpower but still look polished. First of all, they’re versatile. Nobody would look sideways at you if you wore one to a wedding, even if it was your wedding. But they can be a casual everyday look too.

The strategically placed ruffles add visual interest, giving this comfortable option a dress-like appearance. Depending on your body type you might want to size up (i.e. those with a long torso or curvy girls), otherwise, it should be true to size.
