Crows have been part of folklore, mystery, and legend for centuries. Due to their intelligence, cleverness, and trickster personalities, these flying creatures are often misunderstood. Surprisingly, the curiosity and intelligence that crows possess make them great friend material.

Yes, it is possible to befriend a crow. Although becoming friends with animals may sound more like Snow White than real life, crows are able to recognize human faces and trust people. For individuals like myself who enjoy bird-watching and getting to know backyard animals, this is very exciting news!

But before you begin to befriend your neighborhood crows, there are a few simple steps to follow to ensure that everyone stays safe. You should also check to be sure that leaving food out for wild animals is legal in your area.

1. Find Out Their Food Preferences

The first step to attracting these amazing creatures is to find out what types of foods they prefer. While many crows love junk food, healthy food options are best. Most crows enjoy devouring eggs, unsalted peanuts, cat and dog food, corn, chicken, seeds, nuts, fruits, and vegetables.

Finding out what foods your local crows prefer may also take time. You’ll know that you’ve found their favorite foods when the crows quickly descend and eat the tasty treats in your yard.

2. Create A Safe Environment

In order to attract the allusive species, creating a safe environment is key. Since they prefer quiet and open spaces, be sure that there are no noisemakers or debris in your yard. Or scarecrows, if that wasn’t obvious.

3. Keep A Feeding Routine

Reliability is extremely important when it comes to befriending crows so be sure to have a feeding schedule. By establishing a feeding routine, you’ll build a trusting relationship with your feathered friend.

4. Add A Bird Bath

The addition of a bird bath to your yard allows crows to drink water, take a bath, and even wash their food. Since crows are larger birds, a bird bath with a large basin is best.

5. Keep Your Distance

Even though crows may become your friends, you still need to maintain a safe distance from them since they are wild animals. Admiring these flying creatures from afar ensures safety for both you and the crows.

While these are great tips for befriending crows, be sure that you keep crows in the wild. In fact, it’s illegal to have them as pets since crows are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Thankfully, we can be friends with crows even as they remain part of nature.

This Genius Backpack Reverses The Zipper To Make It Theft-Resistant https://www.suggest.com/genius-backpack-reverses-zipper-theft-resistant/2710901/ Sat, 24 Dec 2022 23:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2710901 Backpack on a purple and white background

The struggle is real for those of us who travel for work, go to school, or just love a good backpack. While backpacks are convenient, comfortable, and just make sense to carry most of the time, they can also be an easy theft target. Thankfully, there’s a new genius backpack that’s theft-resistant that was highlighted recently on the Today show. And it’s all thanks to a reverse zipper that we absolutely love!

The Telena Anti Theft Backpack in faux leather is an anti-theft travel bag that will keep your items safe, regardless of where you are. The backpack also comes with nine pockets making it easy for you to organize your items. Plus, with multiple pockets and easy-to-access straps, you can grab your ID, credit cards, or hand sanitizer while on the go!

How many times have you looked for a stylish backpack that is versatile, fits everything you need, and will ward off people from easily getting inside your bag? When you’re standing in line at a busy airport, on the subway, or just standing in a long line, those front zippers can be easy targets for thieves. Not so with the Telena Backpack. Since the zipper rests along your back, you’ll know if someone is reaching for your bag.

Even with the new zipper design, the backpack is more than affordable. With prices starting just under $40, the Telena Backpack is light on any budget. Thank goodness because you may have a difficult time choosing which color to purchase. The bag comes in 32 neutral and fun colors which means you may just need more than one of these cute bags.

The Telena Backpack is also more than adorable. It’s also durable and a great size at just over 13 inches. Since the bag is made from high-quality water-resistant soft PU leather, the bag will stand up to just about anything. Plus, the backpack features a long shoulder strap. Although the bag is typically worn as a backpack, you can also wear it as a shoulder bag if backpacks aren’t your thing! The versatility is perfect for travelers, moms on the go, or students of any age.

Don’t just take our word for it. The majority of reviewers praise the versatility, craftsmanship, and large pockets that the backpack offers. Although some people mentioned that the colors were a little off and that the bag doesn’t look like leather, the description does mention that it’s a faux leather bag. Just something to keep in mind.

But you really can’t beat the price and versatility of this backpack. Since it’s also anti-theft, it’s worth the investment!

This Stylish Backpack With More Than 10,000 5-Star Reviews Might Be Your New Travel BFF https://www.suggest.com/travel-laptop-backpack-over-10000-5-star-reviews/2674992/ Sat, 24 Sep 2022 21:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2674992 The coral and pinstripe and mustard yellow LOVEVOOK laptop bag.

One of the most stressful parts of traveling is packing—and this is especially true when flying. While having a strategy for what you’re bringing, like being strategic about your wardrobe, is important, having the right luggage also makes a huge difference.

If you’re still lugging around a big purse or an old school backpack as that one precious personal item you’re allowed to take on a plane, let us introduce you to a much better option.

Ladies, the durable LOVEVOOK backpack is a game-changer when you are on the go. You’ll soon see why it’s a smart personal item when flying, but it’s so much more than that. Forget your designer labels and big price tags when it comes to bags. Get yourself organized—no matter where you’re headed—with the LOVEVOOK backpack

RELATED: I Was A Notorious Overpacker Until I Found This Packing ‘Holy Grail’

Made of high-quality polyester with no-slip zippers, strong handles, and specially reinforced seams, this waterproof bag has two compartments and 19 pockets, including a hidden anti-theft pocket, a water bottle compartment, and a tissue or wipe pocket. Additionally, the bag has a built-in USB charging port, an open-mouth design for easy access, and a padded laptop compartment.

Not only is this bag functional, but it’s actually cute! It comes in a variety of colors and patterns, 20 in all, including a gorgeous seafoam green, a fun leopard print, and a fashionable coral pink with black and white pinstripes. It is also available in sizes ranging from 15.6 inches to 18 inches.

For students and professional women alike, this bag is just as perfect for an overnight trip as it is for a commute to the office or campus. It can also be a great option for those with kids, especially with that easy-access tissue pocket.

With over 10,000 five-star reviews, it’s clear we’re not the only ones who are in love with the LOVEVOOK backpack.

“I can’t say enough good things about this bag! It’s my go-to for all travel whether an overnight trip or a plane ride for longer. It fits SO MUCH!! Lots of pockets inside and out,” one happy reviewer wrote. ” I LOVE the way the top opens: with metal so it opens as a wide square and stays that way.”

Another reviewer noted how it’s the perfect carry-on. “Lots of pockets to separate items. East access for travel documents. Held Bose Headphones in case, tech cords, battery, converters, one set of clothes, pair of shoes, iPad, iPhone, cosmetics, and other small items. Fit perfectly under [the] airplane seat or in [an] overhead bin. Love it!!”

The only possible drawbacks we could find with this bag were hardly worth mentioning, but we will be picky for a moment. The bag doesn’t quite open as wide as some people would prefer. And, as one reviewer pointed out, the front pocket only has one zipper that can make it challenging to access unless you place it under your plane seat just right.

Still, with so many glowing reviews (and pockets!), if you’re in the market for a new travel or life bag, the LOVEVOOK backpack might just be right for you.

One Amazon reviewer stated, “This light is an ingenious design that fits comfortably over your neck with adjustable light sources at the ends. This Splash-Proof Pouch Keeps My Wet Suit From Soaking Through My Bag https://www.suggest.com/aloha-collection-splash-proof-pouch-tote-wet-suit-review/2663382/ Sun, 17 Jul 2022 21:55:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2663382 Aloha Collection splash-proof pouch in green tropical fan print and Coco Palms Zipper Tote in Black

Summer is here! As for my family, when we’re not taking endless trips to the pool or going to the water park, we’re either having a blast at summer camp or spending lazy days at the lake. And to cap it off, to end summer vacation, a relaxing week on Cape Cod.

Even so, with all this fun in the sun, there’s always one dilemma: how to pack a wet bathing suit. It’s quite the hassle. If you’re leaving a pool, beach, or (even worse) a water park with a bunch of wet bathing suits in tow, it can truly be a nightmare.

If you’ve gone the uncivilized route, like me, of throwing them in a random bag, you’ve quickly realized that it wasn’t the best game plan. Wet bathing suits, especially those that are dusted with sand or smell strongly of chlorine, are not the most welcome items in a bag. Moreover, they can soak through other items and damage them, too.

So what’s the solution? Although you can hang your bathing suit to dry, you’ll probably wait an eternity before you can do your next activity. Instead, you can opt for this genius pouch I found that I’ve been using to keep my suits from soaking through my things.

It’s been a huge game-changer, making it easier to travel to and from water sports this summer.

RELATED: Finally, A Swimsuit Designed For Real Women’s Bodies That Is Both Comfortable And Flattering

The Aloha Mid Splash-Proof Travel Pouch is conveniently clutch-sized, perfect for starting the day at the beach to ending the night at the bar. Although this tough wet bag has had the benefit of being the perfect personal companion for keeping wet gear on the go, it is also ideal for storing other beach essentials like sunscreen, aloe vera, and tanning oil. You can even stash your car keys in it.

The genius wet bag has not only been a lifesaver on the beach and poolside, but it has also solved the problem of where to store my daughter’s wet things at camp. A camp bag can be a messy place, and this cute waterproof bag has been stashing her wet camp gear all summer long.

Those looking for a beach bag that will accommodate more than one suit should look no further than the Aloha Collection Zipper Tote.

Made from the same special technical material as the pouch but holds twice as much, this durable leak-free tote will get everyone’s belongings where they need to be this summer mess-free.

This Powerful Phone Charger Is Slim Enough To Fit In Your Wallet And Is A Traveling Must-Have https://www.suggest.com/tg9-power-bank-review/2662867/ Sun, 17 Jul 2022 19:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2662867 TG90 portable power bank charging three phones at once

One of the biggest issues many of us have when traveling is keeping our devices charged. You never know when you’ll have access to an outlet to charge your cell phone, Bluetooth headphones, and other smart devices. But how do you keep those things powered up and ready to go—especially when you are away from home?

Charging boxes and cords aren’t going to do you any good if you can’t get to an outlet. And, honestly, they just take up space in a carry-on suitcase or bag. I prefer to pack light when traveling!

So, how do I keep my devices charged while also keeping my travel bag from overflowing with cords? The answer is a travel necessity known as the TG90 portable power bank.

Never Run Out Of Battery Power When You Need It

The TG90 portable power bank is a multifunctional 3-in-1 portable battery charger with a micro output, a type-C output, and a lightning output.

Between the built-in cables and the USB port, this small, portable device can directly charge all mobile phones and smart devices. And if you have both an Android and Apple device, you can actually charge them at the same time.

RELATED: This One Simple Gadget Made My Long Distance Flight Actually Bearable

The lightning cable on this Apple MFi-Certified portable charger makes it compatible with all versions of the iPhone 11, 12, and 13, as well as the XS, MS Max, X, 8, and 8 Plus. The type-C cord and the micro output is for Android phones and devices.

This awesome, compact battery charger has a 10000mAh rechargeable capacity, which can provide about two to three charges for your phone. You can actually enjoy an entire weekend trip without worrying about the power.

The best part about this portable battery charger is the ultra-slim compact design that makes it similar in size to an iPhone 13 Pro Max. It fits perfectly into a wallet, pocket, or purse, making it a must-have travel accessory because it’s so easy to carry around.

“I just received this in the mail today and already I’m in love with it. I bought it just to charge my phone for when I go to college but, apparently, it also charges my mac!” one happy customer shared.

“Now I don’t have to carry around my bulky chargers to work and I’m prepared for low battery everywhere,” said a reviewer. “It’s really easy to use and the design is very sturdy. It fits in my small bag easily. I recommend it.”

Another added, “I love not having to carry a separate USB charger with me and it fits well in my purse or pocket, as it is the same size and shape as my phone.”

No matter how much traveling you do, you can’t go wrong with investing in a TG90 or two. It’s the lifesaver I knew I needed, and I’m so glad I found it because I can’t recommend it enough.

Tempering Your Cooler Is The Genius Trick To Keep Things Colder, Longer https://www.suggest.com/temper-chill-cooler-ice-hack/2661351/ Mon, 11 Jul 2022 16:25:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2661351 Bottles of beer chilled on ice in an ice chest/cooler on a beach

This summer while you’re at the beach, the lake, or on a long road trip, there are a few things you don’t want to forget. Loading up on sunscreen is an obvious must, along with other summer vaca essentials like a flattering swimsuit and a good book.

And, of course, some snacks and cold drinks are also necessary to bring along for everyone. Because a hangry child or mom just isn’t a good look while trying to have the best summer ever.

But, have you ever reached into your cooler and noticed that your drinks or food just isn’t as cold as it should be? What’s the deal? What could help keep your cooler cold(er)? We think we just stumbled upon the trick!

The Secret Trick To Staying Cool

Pre-chilling your cooler is the hack we didn’t even know was a thing until now. I mean, a cooler is just supposed to keep things cool, right? Well, if a cooler has been sitting in your hot garage all summer, the ice you dump into it as you are about to walk out the door has a lot of work to do. It first has to cool down the temperature inside the cooler before it can cool down anything else.

The trick is to first bring your cooler inside and let it get down to room temperature a few days before using it. Then the night before your outing, add some ice or icepacks to your cooler to bring down the temperature even more.

RELATED: Get Ready For BBQ Season With This Stylish Patio Side Table That Also Doubles As A Cooler

When you pack your cooler, the type of ice matters as well. Commercial ice is much colder than the ice in your refrigerator, so it’s best to buy some bagged ice. It’s also important to try to limit the number of times you open your cooler.

If you’re outside, stick your cooler in the shade under a tree or umbrella to keep the contents as cold as possible. Also, try to pack your cooler as full as possible. You’ll probably need quite a bit of ice to fill in any gaps because a half-full cooler won’t stay as cold as one filled to the brim.

So, next time you go glamping, picnicking, sitting poolside, or spending the day at the ball field, remember this hack to keep all of your snacks and drinks colder for much longer. We are sure your friends and family will thank you!

This Flight Attendant Swears By This Luggage Brand For Suitcases That Are Extra Durable https://www.suggest.com/flight-attendant-swears-by-travelpro-luggage/2661507/ Sat, 09 Jul 2022 17:05:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2661507 A flight attendant in an airport with a roller suitcase.

Few things put a damper on a trip faster than luggage problems. Whether it’s a broken zipper, crooked wheel, or impossible-to-fix tears, these snafus can seriously affect your travel schedule (and your ability to not lose your cool in the airport).

Unless you’re a regular traveler, the quality of your luggage probably isn’t a pressing issue in your mind. But you’ll certainly wish it was once you’re carrying a 40-pound suitcase like a handbag and repacking your clothes in front of all of La Guardia.

Luckily, we can turn to the true travel experts–airline workers–for tips on what luggage is actually useful and durable. And according to viral TikToker and flight attendant Brenda Orelus, there’s only one luggage brand worth buying.

TikToker @flightbae.b recently shared why she loves her go-to luggage brand, Travelpro, so much. “This luggage is amazing,” Orelus says. “They last for years. I’ve had mine for over five years.”

As Orelus strolls down the airport walkway, it appears as though she’s toting Travelpro’s Maxlite 5 Carry-On Rolling Duffel Bag. This small, carry-on-sized bag has a roomy interior compartment and a built-in accessory pocket. Its polyester fabric is stain-resistant with a water-repellant, DuraGuard coating.

You can use this duffel bag as a rolling bag or stack it on top of other Travelpro staples like Orelus (more on those later). Thanks to its multiple carrying options and large storage capacity, this featherlight duffel bag is a great addition to any trip—long or short.

RELATED: This Highly Rated Packing Cube Holds Up To Three Pairs Of Shoes

Another great option for light travelers (or those with formalwear) is the Travelpro Platinum Elite Tri-Fold Garment Bag. This garment bag features padded roll bars that accommodate longer dresses and suits while guarding against wrinkles.

Additionally, this versatile bag has dual-hanger hooks for easy access. This makes living out of your luggage at a hotel or Airbnb a breeze—plus, you can keep your luggage clean and safe off the floor.

Travelpro kept the busy traveler in mind with an unobtrusive tear strap for easy luggage stacking. It also features quick-access front and rear pockets and a removable quart-sized wet pocket for toiletry storage.

Orelus uses multiple Travelpro pieces while she travels, including what looks like the Maxlite 5 Softside Lightweight Suitcase. Not only does its super lightweight frame make traveling easier, but it also frees up space for more clothes, toiletries, and, most importantly, souvenirs.

This suitcase features water-resistant polyester fabric, high-performance ball-bearing wheels, and high-tensile strength zippers for long-lasting durability. It also expands up to 2 inches to maximize storage capacity even further.

The Maxlite 5 Softside is available in eight colors to match your unique style. And according to @flightbae.b, these versatile cases also make “great impromptu seats in crowded airports. It’s honestly the best luggage for travel professionals.”

While the Maxlite’s biggest selling point is its lightweight frame, the Platinum Elite Softside Luggage’s biggest selling point is…everything else. Just when you thought you learned about all of this suitcase’s bells and whistles, there’s one more to discover.

The Platinum Elite has the same fabric, zippers, and wheels as the Maxlite 5. However, it also comes equipped with four self-aligning magnetic wheels that can roll in any direction. It also has an external USB port, dedicated power bank pocket, and a TSA-compliant, removable quart-sized wet pocket for toiletries.

While it’s unlikely that this beast of a suitcase will ever bite the dust, accidents happen. Thankfully, the Platinum Elite is backed by a lifetime warranty that will cover the cost of repair for damage from an airline.

RELATED: Flight Attendant Shares Simple Tip To Receive Special Treatment On Your Next Flight

If you’re more of a hard-shell luggage kind of traveler, Travelpro has got you covered, too. Its 2-Piece Hardside Expandable Luggage features incredible storage space, rugged durability, and an eight-wheel spinner set for maximum maneuverability.

This hard-wearing luggage set has 2-in-1 check-in size convertibility, making it perfect for trips of any length. Fit five to seven days of clothes when the suitcase isn’t expanded. Or, fit over a week’s worth of clothes by utilizing its 3-inch expansion option.

Travelpro’s Hardside Luggage is carry-on and check-in sizer-bin tested. In addition, it has a TSA-approved lock that allows authorities safe access to your luggage without ruining your suitcase in the process. So, you can worry more about enjoying your travels and less about your luggage.

When it comes to finding the best luggage, it’s best to take advice from seasoned professionals. Orelus didn’t share her love of Travelpro for a sponsorship deal—she did it because she believes in these hard-working, high-quality products.

And if this luggage is good enough for the busiest of travel pros, it will easily meet your criteria for a late-summer vacay (and then some).

Viral Video Claims Grating Soap Helps Deter Mosquitoes, But Does It Actually Work? https://www.suggest.com/irish-spring-mosquito-repellent-hack-truth/2659916/ Mon, 04 Jul 2022 20:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2659916 A mosquito on human skin

Yay! ‌Summer‌ ‌is‌ ‌here at last! But, unfortunately, so are the mosquitoes to wreak havoc on your fun in the sun. In spite of being the nuisance of the season, some mosquitoes are potentially harmful and can ‌spread‌ ‌viruses.

Fortunately, there are several ways to keep them at bay. ‌While‌ ‌most‌ ‌options for deterring these pests involve harsh chemicals, one Instagram video has gone viral for its more natural approach. ‌However, it’s raising‌ ‌some‌ ‌questions.

Many Claim This Is The Best Natural Solution

While it may sound strange, one Instagrammer, @brunchwithbabs, assures her fans that her unusual hack for keeping mosquitoes at bay has been working for her for years.

“Guess what I’m grating? I’ll give you a hint,” Babs says. “It’s not cheese. It’s soap.“ ‌To prepare for her dinner around the firepit she shows fellow Instagrammers how she prepares with a bar of soap.

“Take a little soap. I like Irish Spring,” she says. “ I’m going to just grate a little barrier around our dinner area.“ She explains to her fans that this guards against mosquitoes. ”It works for me, let me know if it works for you, “ she says.

RELATED: Repel Bugs, Sharpen Scissors, And 5 Other Dryer Sheet Hacks That Don’t Involve Laundry

Commenters were amazed by the hack, saying things such as, “Whattttt this is genius!!!” or “Girl if this works you have just saved my summer 😍.” ‌

In particular, Bab’s noted that Irish Spring was her brand of choice for this supposed hack.

What Does The Research Say?

In the end, what really matters is whether or not the hack works and if it is‌ ‌safe. ‌In spite of the fact that Irish Spring soap may contain ingredients mosquitoes dislike, there has been no official study that proves or disproves that it can repel mosquitoes or protect you from mosquitoes that‌ ‌carry‌ ‌disease.

Additionally, Colgate-Palmolive, the maker of Irish Spring soap, issued a statement‌ ‌regarding‌ ‌the‌ ‌viral hack.

“Our Irish Spring bar soaps were not tested to keep flies and rodents away. We, therefore, would not have this information as our products were not intended to be used in this way,” Colgate-Palmolive said.

Since‌ ‌there‌ ‌is‌ ‌no‌ ‌scientific research that supports the use of Irish Spring soap, it may not be the most effective repellent for mosquitoes. ‌As far as mosquito control is concerned, the CDC recommends caution due to the fact that some can transmit viruses like West‌ ‌Nile,‌ ‌dengue,‌ ‌Zika,‌ ‌and‌ ‌parasites‌ ‌like malaria.

The CDC recommends known and proven deterrents to repel mosquitoes. Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents, such as DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

In lieu of the chemicals, you can also use a fan. ‌Adding‌ ‌a large‌ ‌fan‌ ‌to‌ ‌your‌ ‌outside‌ ‌areas‌ ‌could‌ ‌provide‌ ‌some‌ ‌relief. As mosquitoes’ wings aren’t strong enough to withstand strong winds, they will find it difficult to fly.

This One Simple Gadget Made My Long Distance Flight Actually Bearable https://www.suggest.com/long-distance-flight-airfly-adapter-review/2657107/ Sun, 19 Jun 2022 22:25:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2657107 Hands pulling out ear phones to watch entertainment on plane using AirFly transmitter

Modern wireless technology has spoiled us so much in recent years. It’s gotten to the point that I’m struggling to remember a time when I couldn’t hop in my car and automatically listen to anything I wanted to through my stereo speakers with just the simple push of a button.

But not every device has Bluetooth, and not every situation can accommodate a wire-free lifestyle. As a frequent traveler, the first thing that comes to mind is long-distance flights. However, one simple gadget that I recently stumbled across has actually made numerous hours in an airplane bearable even without any special treatment from the flight attendents.

Enjoy Inflight Entertainment With Your Own Headphones

This simple gadget that I speak of (and am about to heap high praise upon) is the Twelve South AirFly Pro. What is this thing and how does it work, you ask? Well, this handy piece of tech is a Bluetooth adapter that serves as a link between wireless headphones and headphone jacks. And two people can use it at the same time!

Think of it this way: you are traveling on a plane with your significant other and you both want to watch the same movie (in sync) while using your respective AirPods. All you have to do is plug your Twelve South AirFly Pro into the 3.5 mm headphone jack and pair your AirPods to it. Voila! You have wirelessly connected your favorite headphones to the plane’s entertainment system.

RELATED: If Neck Pillows Aren’t Cutting It For You While Traveling, Try This Genius Solution Instead

The other option would be to use this handy gadget to watch movies and TV shows with your travel partner on a laptop. And I promise you’ll get your money’s worth. On just a single charge, the Twelve South AirFly Pro gets 18 hours of use. This thing can handle a non-stop flight from Los Angeles to Sydney. Even if the battery is dead, it still works while charging!

Great On Land, Too

This device is the traveler’s best friend, no matter which form of transportation you are using. Because it’s also a receiver and not just a transmitter, the Twelve South AirFly Pro allows you to send audio from your iPhone to an older car stereo via the Aux In function.

This is also a great option when you have a rental car, instead of syncing your entire phone with the vehicle’s Bluetooth. It’s even great in the hotel room if you want to stay up and watch a show while your partner peacefully sleeps nearby.

Even if you’re not traveling, this handy gadget can still get a lot of use. Take it to the gym to wirelessly transmit audio from gym equipment, TVs, or any 3.5 mm audio jack. Kids can also use it with their portable gaming devices. AirFly Pro has a 33-foot reach so you can relax with plenty of space.

Just look at what this happy customer had to say: “Just returned from a European vacation and this little device worked like a charm! The sound cancellation worked really well on that horribly long 14-hour flight and I could hear the movie perfectly. Just buy it, it’s a must have,” the reviewer explained.

“One 17-hour flight, a layover of 2 hours, and then another 6-hour flight! And to my utter surprise, these delivered. Flawlessly… IMHO, this is a better investment than buying the extra legroom, so please do yourself a favor, and JUST GET IT.”

I Added This One Simple Product To My Summer Fires To Make Them The Talk Of The Town https://www.suggest.com/magical-flames-fire-color-changing-packets-review/2653929/ Mon, 06 Jun 2022 22:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2653929 Campfire on the beach with Magical Flames making fire red, green, teal, yellow and orange

Fires are everywhere during the summer—from backyard fire pits to campsites and bonfires to the beach. Sitting around a fire with friends and family members during a summer evening is one of those simple joys in life. But if you want to make your fire stand out and become the talk of the town this season, all you have to do is add one simple product.

Create A Magical Experience

A traditional fire has flames of red, gold, and orange. But we’ve all seen that a million times, and it can get a little boring. That’s where Magical Flames come in—a product that prompts your fire to show off every color of the rainbow.

Magical Flames has created fire color-changing packets that are easily added to a wood-burning fire, which will result in a beautiful array of flames that feature vibrant purples, reds, greens, blues, and every other hue you can think of!

All you have to do is toss one to three unopened pouches of Magical Flames into your outdoor wood-burning fire. In just minutes, you’ll get a colorful display that will last for hours.

We should note that Magical Flames claims to work indoors in a fireplace or wood-burning stove, but we can’t recommend that for safety reasons.

Perfect For Bonfires, Camping, And More

Keeping Magical Flames indoors would be a waste, anyways. You want to show off this campfire novelty product and use it outside at your next bonfire, camping trip, or a relaxing get-together around your backyard fire pit. Magical Flames are perfect for parties, and the kids will absolutely love them.

Compared to color cones, fire color sticks, and color flame crystals, Magical Flames will give you a much brighter and more colorful fire experience without the mess. And, you don’t have to touch anything that’s been dipped in chemicals, which can make you sick if not handled properly.

Magical Flames are so easy to use. And to keep those vibrant colors dancing for longer, all you have to do is throw in a couple of extra packets. Here’s what some happy customers had to say.

“This product delivers exactly what they say and then some. Lasts a good long while—we had the fire going for over five hours and used 4 packs (2 to start, 2 more halfway through). The color palette is vivid blues, teal, green, even rare hints of purple. Works even better when the packets are under a log to really show off the color contrast,” one reviewer wrote.

Another shared, “Really a great product, always amazes everyone that sees them. You have to play with the packets and place them accordingly based on your fire’s size. The more you place, the wilder the colors get. I was also pleasantly surprised as to how long it lasts.”

You really can’t go wrong with Magical Flames this summer. Just remember, if you are cooking food over your fire, that is not the time to use these awesome little packets. This product is simply for visual effect.

Flight Attendant Shares Must-Have Device To Combat In-Flight Ear Pain https://www.suggest.com/cure-for-in-flight-ear-pain-eustachi/2641652/ Wed, 01 Jun 2022 23:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2641652 Profile of a woman with her hand near her ear, the ear and surrounding area colored red to signify pain.

Do your ears pop when you fly? Do your kids start screaming during takeoff because their ears won’t pop? If so, you need to see this viral travel hack on TikTok from a flight attendant who posts under the username @cici_inthesky.

This savvy and experienced traveler and entrepreneur says there is a life-saving product that you should always have in your bag when traveling by plane. If you or someone in your family suffers from ear pain while flying, then Cici says that you should have Eustachi ready to go at a moment’s notice.

Must-Have For A Comfortable Flight

In her video titled “Another product recommendation from a flight attendant,” Cici tells her 1.4 million viewers that flight attendants and pilots who travel regularly use Eustachi because it’s a game-changer in the world of planes and ear pain.

“Alright, do you fly on an airplane? This is a product that everybody should have in their bag with them at all times. So that if they need it—or their children need it, anybody needs it—they’ve got it. It is a lifesaver. This is the Eustachi … it’s very simple to use,” Cici shares.

She goes on to say that travelers with eustachian tube dysfunction and those whose “ears just aren’t popping for whatever reason” should always have Eustachi when they travel. It’s portable, it will get past the TSA because of the lack of liquid, and it works significantly better than a pack of gum.

“All you do is hold one side of the nostril, take this, press the button, you swallow at the same time, and it completely clears your ears. It has saved me,” Cici states. “So many other people use a product like this to help when their ears are not draining properly, or they’re inflamed maybe from a cold or something. It is a MUST GET.”

Other Options To Avoid Ear Pain

While Eustachi is the ultimate ear pressure relief device, there are other options that can help you avoid ear pain while flying the friendly skies.

The EarPopper from Summit Medical can relieve the pressure on the eardrums and the related discomfort, and you don’t need a prescription from a doctor. According to the numerous four- and five-star reviews, it’s definitely worth the investment.

“This is the ONLY thing that has worked for my son’s ear pain with flying. We have tried every recommendation … to help relieve his misery when landing. This was recommended by an ENT surgeon,” the happy customer wrote.

There’s also the Pressureze All Natural Nasal Spray that gives fast ear and sinus relief while clearing out both the ear and sinus canals at the same time. In addition to flying, this product can be used when diving and swimming. And, it really works when you have a cold or if you suffer from allergies.

Ear pain when traveling is now a thing of the past thanks to Eustachi. There are also other options that will help stop the suffering, you just have to be prepared. Make sure to have one of these in your bag the next time you fly and ditch the “hold your nose and blow” approach for good!

I Was A Notorious Overpacker Until I Found This Packing ‘Holy Grail’ https://www.suggest.com/bagail-compression-packing-cubes-review/2652937/ Sun, 29 May 2022 18:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2652937 Person kneeling on overpacked luggage trying to zip it shut

Packing for a trip always seems like a daunting task. It doesn’t matter where we’re going or how long we’ll be gone—packing is always super stressful.

How many pairs of shoes should I bring? Maybe I’ll need a sweater or a coat? What if we go out and I need a dress and heels? Should we pack a separate overnight bag for that night in the motel? What if my favorite pair of pants get stained, ripped, or rendered useless in some unexpected way? You have to expect the unexpected when traveling with kids!

Because all of these questions—and more—are making noise in my head, I’ve always been a notorious over-packer. But packing doesn’t have to be this stressful—and there are ways to create more room inside our existing luggage while staying organized. Allow me to introduce you to this packing “holy grail” known as compression packing cubes.

Create More Room To Make Packing Less Stressful

When I discovered Bagail Compression Packing Cubes, it was like finding the luggage version of the TARDIS (any Doctor Who fans out there?). These cubes seemingly take up very little space, but when you open and expand them they have so much room.

When you use a set of compression packing cubes while traveling, it’s similar to using a Ziploc space bag for storage. You simply fold your clothes and flatten them, pack them into the cube, then use the outer zipper to compress the bag.

Graphic showing how Bagail compression packing cubes work
(Bagail)

This packing method allows you to bring all the clothing you want on your trip, and everything fits nicely in your existing luggage. What’s more, compression packing cubes help keep everything organized—which is essential when traveling with your family.

Investing in a four, five, or six-pack of compression packing cubes will make packing and traveling more enjoyable, as well as “light, easy, and organized.” Seriously, you can open up your luggage after a flight and there’s no mess. Everything is clean, tidy, and in its proper place.

With Over 3,000 5-Star Reviews, I’m Not Alone In My Love Of These Packing Cubes

The Bagail Compression Packing Cubes are made with high-quality nylon fabric, they come in four different sizes–small to extra-large–and they are smooth and sturdy. These amazing space savers also come in a number of colors that will match any luggage set.

I can’t get enough of these packing cubes, they will literally be part of my summer vacation for years to come. And according to the thousands of five-star reviews, I’m not alone.

“I used the largest one and could fit 3 pairs of pants, 1 pair of shorts, and several shirts with room to spare. You could easily pack for an adult for a whole week in the largest bag,” one satisfied customer wrote. “The zippers seem to be well made and durable. Would definitely recommend these to make the packing process easier and more organized.”

Another added, “I don’t know how I would have packed without these, and I didn’t even open the expansion on the suitcase.”

If you’re traveling this summer, then it’s time to invest in compression packing cubes. They cut down on so much stress and hassle. Just make sure not to pack them so full and make them so heavy that your carry-on won’t be allowed on the plane.

This Product Saved Me From Late-Night Doom Scrolling (And Brought Me Closer To Family) https://www.suggest.com/benefits-dmc-diy-craft-kits/2639486/ Thu, 12 May 2022 22:23:35 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2639486 Working on DMC mandala coaster kit

I come from a long line of talented seamstresses. As a child, I was always amazed that my relatives could create such beautiful, elaborate clothes, blankets, decorations, and more. As an adult, that amazement has been infiltrated by a tinge of guilt.

The guilt appeared once I realized that, at my age, my mother was sewing her entire wardrobe from scratch. Meanwhile, I can’t seem to unlock the mystery that is a bobbin. But with my schedule, learning a new, tedious skill just isn’t a viable option.

Moreover, many of the textile artists in my family have already passed. Those still alive are either equally busy or physically unable to show me the ropes. Just when I had succumbed to never being able to carry on their legacy, I found DMC.

“From A Simple Thread, A Work Of Art Is Born”

DMC Mandala coasters stacked, a water glass on a coaster in background
(DMC)

DMC first started selling printed fabrics over 270 years ago in 1746. Since then, the company has expanded to include thread, yarn, sewing accessories, craft kits, and free patterns. The company’s motto wraps up its ethos perfectly: from a simple thread, a work of art is born.

While I’m not entirely hopeless at embroidery and knitting, I can’t say the same for sewing and crocheting. So, when I noticed that DMC had several crochet kits available, I was hooked (pun intended).

My grandmother could crochet a quintessentially 1970s chevron afghan in what seemed like a day or less. Knowing I needed a bit more practice before I got to her level, I started with DMC’s Mandala Coasters Crochet Kit.

DIY Led By DMC

DMC crochet kit yarn, instruction booklet, and tools
(DMC)

My crochet kit included everything I would need for the project: four adorable balls of Baby Cotton yarn, a crochet hook, a sewing needle, stitch markers, and of course, detailed instructions. I was nervous but determined not to be outmatched by a kit that claims to be for beginners.

Luckily, the instruction pamphlet was extremely thorough. It broke down every single stitch that I would need to make my mandala coasters—even the first step, a slip knot, which many craft kits will overlook because of its assumed simplicity.

DMC doesn’t add extra fluff to its instructions, making them easy to follow and conveniently located on two side-by-side pages. (So, I didn’t have to worry about holding my wonky crochet in one hand and flipping pages with another.)

The overall project should take around 12 hours to complete, which I’ve been knocking out in 30- to 60-minute intervals throughout the week as I can. I won’t lie and say I haven’t gotten frustrated at a knot or two, but it’s certainly no more frustrating than a turbulent Facebook feed at 10:30 at night.

And generally speaking, my DMC kit has provided much more than a new skill.

Adding This New Activity Gave Me More Rest, Not Less

Finished DMC Mandala coasters in dark and light blue
(DMC)

Before starting my project, I assumed I had virtually no wiggle room in my schedule. Then, I thought about my late-night Netflix and Scroll routine. On weeknights, I’m in bed by around 11, and I’ll watch a show (and/or scroll through my phone) until I fall asleep around midnight or one.

I decided that incorporating my DMC kit into my bedtime routine was my best option. The kit is compact enough to fit on my narrow bedside table, making reaching for it at the end of the day even easier. One of the first things I noticed was how quickly it put me to sleep.

Okay, so that probably sounds bad at first. But I think it’s safe to assume that crochet isn’t winning the award for Most Enthralling Activity anytime soon. And because I wasn’t subjecting my eyes to harsh blue light or my brain to anxiety-inducing media, I could decompress and go to sleep faster.

Did I wake up a few times with crochet needles on my collarbones? Yes. Did I start feeling more rested, alert, and calm in the mornings after I would crochet instead of staying up to doom-scroll? Also yes.

Even More Benefits Of DMC

Woman using rustic punch needle kit DMC
(DMC)

In addition to soothing my tired brain and eyes, working on a DMC kit has also been a huge confidence booster. I’ve gotten so stuck in my rut of work, home, repeat, that I forgot the addictive thrill of learning (and getting good at) a new skill or hobby.

My mandala coasters are coming along very slowly—but steadily, too. As I round each corner and tie off each new coaster, I grow prouder of myself for not only doing something productive with my limited free time. But I’m also ecstatic to be learning a skill that’s been in my family for generations.

I already have my sights set on upcoming DMC projects I’d like to try, including this Relaxed Rustic Punch Needle Kit and this dreamy Calm Wall Hanging Macrame Kit. These are the types of pieces I would buy on Etsy for myself or a loved one.

Indeed, DMC has my gift-giving game sorted just in time for birthdays, anniversaries, and other holidays. For my fellow crafters and artistic family members, I plan on gifting them their own DMC kits to try. I can’t wait to use my newfound skills to create one-of-a-kind gifts and decor for everyone else.

And while I’m still nowhere near the level of proficiency that my mother, grandmother, and sisters possess, I’m excited to be getting closer stitch by stitch.

The Shocking Reason You Should Never Drink Coffee Or Tea On A Flight https://www.suggest.com/flight-attendant-says-never-drink-coffee-tea-on-flight/2637838/ Mon, 09 May 2022 10:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2637838 Woman drinking coffee on airplane

Inflight beverages have come to be an expected part of air travel. In fact, most of us probably look forward most to the drink cart making its way down the aisle. But according to one flight attendant, some of those drinks are riskier than others.

Kat Kamalani has made quite a name for herself on TikTok with her insider air travel tips. And she really does have great advice, like recommending a carry-on bag that can hold a week’s worth of clothes or giving the low down on how to be treated like royalty on a flight.

In a recent video titled, “Do Not Eat These Things On An Airplane,” Kamalani told viewers that they should “never, ever, ever consume any liquid that is not in a can or bottle.”

What was the reason behind this advice? The answer made our stomachs turn.

The Water Tanks Are ‘Disgusting’

According to Kamalani, “Rule Number One” of flying is to avoid ordering liquids like coffee or tea. “Those water tanks are never cleaned, and they are disgusting,” Kamalani explains.

“Talk to a flight attendant. We rarely, rarely drink the coffee or tea,” the 30-year-old continues. “They come from the same water tank. And so, when you’re drinking that coffee and tea, it comes from that hot water. It’s absolutely disgusting.”

In the background of the video, Kamalani shows off the traditional coffee and tea makers on a plane. She tells the camera, “they are rarely cleaned unless they are broken.” While they do clean the coffee and tea pots, “the whole machine is never cleaned.”

Moreover, those uncleaned urns sit right next to the—you guessed it—the lavatories. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any grosser, it did.

In addition to telling people to avoid coffee and tea, Kamalani also warns against putting hot water in a baby bottle.

“Pro-tip for all you parents, never ask for hot water and put it in your baby’s bottle. Ask for bottled water on the side and hot water in a cup. Then, make your baby a bottle with the bottled water and put it in the cup to heat it up.”

What The Science Says

According to a 2019 airline water study by the Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center at the City University of New York that analyzed the quality of drinking water on 11 major and 12 regional airlines, Kamalani isn’t necessarily wrong.

“The quality of drinking water varies by airline, and many airlines have possibly provided passengers with unhealthy water,” the study reads.

The Comments Section

Despite her warnings, many of the commenters didn’t buy it and told Kamalani she was working for the wrong airline.

“She has no idea what she is talking about. Water tanks are sterilized on a regular basis. I know because I do it. This is such bad info for the public,” one person wrote. Another added, “We do clean them! Your airline don’t 😂.”

Even if Kamalani’s story wasn’t 100% accurate of all airlines, it was enough to convince us to avoid coffee and tea while flying. We’ll just stick with the tiny liquor bottles, thanks.

Do Flight Attendants Still Have To Follow Outdated Height And Weight Restrictions? Yes And No https://www.suggest.com/former-flight-attendants-shares-physical-requirements-for-job/2637093/ Fri, 06 May 2022 23:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2637093 Flight attendant weight and height restrictions

Kat Kamalani, a former flight attendant, has shared a ton of behind-the-scenes info about airlines and travel. She’s shared everything from packing tips to tips on how to get treated like royalty by the flight crew.

Now, the content creator is giving us the low-down on what it takes to be a flight attendant. While some standards have changed, some restrictions are still in place. So, what does it take to become a flight attendant?

To start, all airlines have different standards. But across the board, it seems like a GED or high school diploma is required. Other requirements include having no visible tattoos, a clean background check, customer service-related experience, etc.

As recently as the late ’90s, many airlines also had specific height and weight requirements—even going so far as to have flight attendants step on a scale before boarding.

And while things do look different today, they don’t look that different.

Physical Requirements Of A Flight Attendant

In the early ’90s, many US airlines dropped their weight limits and charts for flight attendants. This was mainly due to legal action taken by several women. There were antiquated regulations on how much a flight attendant could weigh at any given age, when returning from having a baby, and dependant on their height.

In the video, Kamalani states, “In order to be a flight attendant back in the day, there truly was a weight restriction that you had to meet.” She continues, “But now they don’t necessarily have you step on a scale.”

She says airlines have a way of getting around not having a specific weight limit, though. Now, it’s called a performance test. Performance tests are meant to show that you can move easily down the aisles, fit through an emergency window, and sit in the jumpseat.

According to Kamalani, if you make it to in-person interviews, they will have you sit in a jump seat and buckle it up. A jump seat is a small seat on an aircraft that can fold up. Next, they’ll have you close an overhead bin to ensure you can reach it easily. Kamalani says they’ll also have you close a “mock door to make sure you’re strong enough.”

A Rose By Any Other Name

We’ve come a long way from the cringey, overtly sexual flight attendant ads of the ’60s and ’70s. However, there’s no denying that someone’s height and weight still play a part in their qualification for the job.

The airline industry has had a long history of discriminating against overweight and obese individuals, from flight attendants to passengers. Most airlines require obese individuals to pay for an extra seat, which can add hundreds of dollars to the flier’s total.

Suddenly, those “friendly skies” seem far less welcoming.

6 Ingenious Ways To Hide Emergency Money While Traveling  https://www.suggest.com/ways-to-hide-emergency-money-while-traveling/2636878/ Wed, 04 May 2022 22:25:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2636878 Different ways to hide money while traveling

Whether you prefer an annual pilgrimage to your go-to vaca spot or love hitting up new destinations, traveling is one of the few life experiences we just can’t get enough of. The ability to have new adventures and experience new cultures is truly priceless.

Not to say traveling doesn’t have its difficulties, too. There are risks when it comes to being away from home that is sometimes inevitable. But by researching the area you will be visiting and staying vigilant, your risks can be lowered. Another way to minimize risk is to keep cash on hand.

You never know if your card will be declined for some reason or if the local shops only take cash. Of course, stashing cash can be difficult because you don’t want to flash a lot of cash in public. Plus, if you were robbed, things could get expensive.

Luckily, you can lower these risks by having the right gear to hide emergency money while traveling worry-free. Here are some of our favorites.

1. Travel Money Belt

Thomas Bates travel belt
(Thomas Bates)

This unassuming belt can actually hold a lot of cash. The 22-inch zipper pouch on the inside of the belt can hold up to 20+ bills. The lightweight belt is metal-free and hypoallergenic, perfect for hiding money, a key, or other small valuable items.

“Bought one for myself and one for my husband for a recent trip to Costa Rica. I don’t normally wear belts, but this seemed like a good way to stash our extra cash. I would definitely recommend this for travel,” stated one reviewer.

2. Adjustable Undercover Bra Wallet

Adjustable undercover bra wallet
(YOYI YOYI)

Let’s face it; women’s clothing hasn’t come too far in functionality. Women’s pants rarely have pockets deep enough to hold anything. And while I do love skirts and dresses with pockets, those can’t carry much more than a phone.

Moreover, it’s likely not a great idea to rely on pockets while traveling anyway. Carrying around a bulky purse on vacation? Well, that’s not ideal either.

This undercover bra wallet is the perfect solution. It can clip on any undergarment, and your emergency money or valuable items will be safe. Made from RFID-blocking materials, your credit cards and other items will be secure. It’s also water-resistant and made from super soft Spandex so that it won’t be uncomfortable on your skin.

3. Infinity Scarf With Zipper Pockets

Infinity scarf with zippered pockets
(BIAOSU)

Headed to cooler weather? This infinity scarf will help keep you snug and can keep all your small valuables and cash safe. The scarf has two discreet zipper pockets, perfect for stashing smaller items and cash.

Because of its infinity cowl neck design, the scarf won’t look too bulky or out of place while hiding your valuables. Available in various colors and prints, this scarf is a great alternative to carrying a purse.

It’s also smart to divvy up your travel cash. So, using a scarf in addition to the bra wallet or money belt would be ideal.

4. Anti-Theft Messenger Bag

Travelon anti-theft messenger bag
(Travelon)

This simple and functional messenger bag is large enough to carry all your important documents plus more but isn’t oversized. Reviews show enough room for a small umbrella, a book or Kindle, your phone, and a water bottle in the side pocket.

The messenger bag is well-equipped with a 5-point Anti-Theft Security System. It has lockdown hardware on the straps, RFID blocking pockets, and locking compartments, and both the straps and the purse itself are slash-resistant.

One reviewer stated, “I got this bag for a two-week trip to Europe and I have no regrets! Amazingly durable and so functional. It holds so much stuff and has a great number of pockets.”

5. Diversion Safe Water Bottle

Stash water bottle
(Smart House Inc.)

My cousin recently said she has an “emotional support water bottle,” and I’ve never related to something more. My water bottle goes everywhere with me, and it’s pure panic if I forget it at home.

If you plan on traveling with your own emotional support water bottle, consider using this stainless steel safe and canteen duo. With a secret compartment on the bottom, this water bottle is great for stashing keys, AirPods, money, and other small valuables.

6. Hair Brush Diversion Stash Safe

Hair brush diversion stash safe
(Charmonic)

This round brush not only functions as a high-quality, four-inch barrel brush, but it’s also an excellent, inconspicuous way to stash emergency money or jewelry.

The top of the secret stash brush unscrews to reveal a roomy hidden compartment. Throw in your bag or luggage among your other toiletries, and your valuables are hidden easily (and safely) in plain sight.

Nearly 2,000 five-star ratings speak for themselves. The Mossio Shoe Bag is well-loved for its durability, functionality, and eye-catching aesthetic.

One thrilled customer stated, “This shoe bag is exactly what I wanted. [The] perfect color- light pink, and the material is sturdy. From the minute I opened it, I fell in love and knew I made the right decision with my purchase. I bought it to store my expensive character shoes and accessories, and it fits everything perfectly. I highly recommend this product.”

Other reviews were less romantic (but impressed nevertheless). “It’s a bag; it holds shoes,” wrote one straight-shooter customer. “I chose the cactus print and got a pink stripe for my mom. They are cute and match our other bags. Most importantly, they do a great job simply existing as a bag to hold shoes, while traveling, inside a larger bag.”

When it comes to traveling, those are the types of tools you need: no-nonsense, simple, and functional. The Mossio Shoe Bag does its job, and it does it well, so you can focus on putting your best foot forward during your travels.

Develop Instant Photos And Print From Your Phone With This Must-Have Summer Gadget https://www.suggest.com/fujifilm-instax-mini-liplay-snaps-prints-photos-must-have-summer-gadget/2635607/ Wed, 27 Apr 2022 22:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2635607 Fujifilm Mini Liplay digital camera, must-have summer gadget

From tintypes to film to digital cameras: one thing has remained the same over the last two centuries: we love documenting our lives with pictures. And with each new method of doing so, we learned to deal with a new set of pros and cons.

Digital cameras and smartphones have made taking pictures easier than ever. But they aren’t without fault. While you might be able to collect hundreds of images just by tapping your screen, printing them into physical copies can be arduous.

Developing film is one way to get physical copies, but it’s expensive and time-consuming. Moreover, capturing high-quality images on film is much easier said than done. Still, there’s an undeniable nostalgia around film that appeals to many armchair photogs like myself.

So, when I discovered the Fujifilm Instax Mini Liplay Hybrid, I knew my photography game would be changed forever.

It’s Film, It’s Digital, No! It’s Fujifilm

Fujifilm Mini Liplay, digital and film camera
(Fujifilm)

The Fujifilm Mini Liplay combines the best of both the digital and film worlds. Its shape and general design are just like that of a mid-aughts point-and-shoot digital camera. You have a screen to navigate menu options, a few shutter and exposure options, and flash.

However, the Mini Liplay goes further with a built-in printer that creates wallet-sized photographs in seconds. While other instant cameras will print off the photo as soon as you snap the shutter button, the Mini Liplay lets you decide. You can print the image off now or save a digital copy to a memory card to print later (or not at all).

I used a regular Fujifilm Instax camera for years before treating myself to a Mini Liplay. The instant print feature is fun and nostalgic, but it also leaves you with a collection of unusable, blurry, and poorly lit throwaway shots. Not only is this disappointing, but it’s also costly—with the Mini Liplay, you save valuable film, time, and money.

An instant camera with the ability to save photos to a memory card would be impressive enough. But luckily, Fujifilm didn’t stop there.

Sync Your Camera With Your Smartphone

Fujifilm Miniliplay sync to smartphone, Bluetooth capabilities
(Fujifilm)

One of my favorite Mini Liplay features is the ability to print photos from your smart device—not just your camera. Just sync your smartphone or tablet to your Fujifilm camera, and you’re able to print off any image you like, regardless of whether you took it on your Fujifilm.

Sometimes, we’ll capture the perfect photo with the wrong device. More often than not, it’s with our smartphones—the devices we regularly keep within arm’s reach. Thanks to the Mini Liplay’s Bluetooth compatibility, you can print off high-quality digital photos from your phone straight to film.

I’ve printed off plenty of images straight from my phone, and the color and clarity are always a true match to my iPhone original. Plus, the Mini Liplay also has onboard adjustment options, so you can brighten, darken, and sharpen images before printing.

Extra Bells And Whistles (Yep, We’re Still Going)

Fujifilm Mini Liplay QR code audio recording

This Service Allows You To Stay For Free In Homes Around The World, Seriously! https://www.suggest.com/housesitting-service-stay-for-free-homes-around-the-world/2634006/ Thu, 14 Apr 2022 23:35:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2634006 Beautiful home in Florida.

There are a number of ways to save money while traveling, whether that’s packing smart to avoid baggage fees or strategies to find great deals on resorts. While helpful, there is no denying that a majority of one’s travel budget is ultimately allotted to lodging.

But what if you could travel to almost anywhere in the world and stay in others’ homes for free? Sounds too good to be true, right? It turns out, there is a way to this, with one small caveat.

Travel content creator, Kristina Cors, has a knack for crafting some brilliant travel tips. Cors’ viral videos feature tips about traveling solo safely, making friends while abroad, and must-see sites in locations around the world. However, it was her video on how to stay at various destinations for free that made major waves.

The Travel Tip That Can Save Thousands

According to Cors, the travel hack that saves her the most money is housesitting. By helping those who are traveling themselves she is able to find free accommodations just about anywhere she wants to go.

Cors explains that “housesitting is when a homeowner allows you to stay in their home for free in exchange for looking after their pets.”

Rather than searching random forums or social groups for this, Cors utilizes a specialized service. “The site I use is called trustedhousesitters.com, you can look for places that allow you to stay for two weeks, a month, and even six months around the world!”

In her video, Cors shows viewers a snapshot of her first stay via the service in a San Diego home about two minutes from the beach. While cuddled up on the couch, Cors showed the four adorable dogs she looked after during her stay. If watching four dogs sounds daunting, Cors did point out you can housesit with a friend or significant other to help share pet watching duties.

Cors notes that having access to these amazing opportunities will cost $129 for the year, but she feels it’s worth it. Some commenters thought the annual fee was a bit steep, but Cors disagreed. “With one house sit, you can stay somewhere for 6 months for FREE! Lol it’s an amazing deal–one house sit alone will more than pay for your membership,” she replied.

Cors loved her experience using the trustedhousesitters website. “The great thing is that you get access to an entire house. I got to explore San Diego during the day and I really only had to worry about taking the dogs out in the morning and in the afternoon,” she said. Furthermore, she added,  “I felt super safe. I stayed over a week and it saved me over $800!”

Flight Attendant Shares Simple Tip To Receive Special Treatment On Your Next Flight https://www.suggest.com/flight-attendant-shares-tip-for-good-inflight-service/2632369/ Tue, 05 Apr 2022 11:35:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2632369 Flight attendant serving juice to a passenger on flight.

The last few stressful years have brought out the worst from some passengers on flights. There have been so many reports of unruly and rude passengers verbally accosting, physically assaulting, and threatening flight attendants and the rest of the flight crew. It’s inexcusable behavior that shouldn’t even be happening in the first place, yet, here we are.

So, obviously treating your flight attendants with respect and dignity will go a long way. Even when you’re stressed out with your toddler on a flight that’s been delayed.

Acknowledging your flight attendant’s hard work, being respectful, and treating them like human beings should all be obvious. But, a former flight attendant has a tip that will help you get the star treatment from the crew. The commenters, however, didn’t hold back their opinions.

Tips From A Flight Attendant

Kat Kamalani was a flight attendant for a major airline. She worked for six years before becoming a full-time content creator. Now, she’s sharing tons of tips to make your plane ride even better.

Honestly, her tip is pretty simple. When you board a flight, if you bring a few thoughtful gifts for the flight attendants, they will be ever so grateful. Just like other people in the service industry, flight attendants go through a lot by just doing their jobs. Most other service workers are tipped, but flight attendants typically don’t get that perk.

Her video starts with her stating how exhausting it is to be a flight attendant. “You’re always in different time zones, waking up crazy hours, and dealing with angry customers,” she states.

Her suggestion is to bring something to brighten up the flight attendant’s day. “Five dollar Starbucks gift cards–it means the world to us when a customer gives us this.”

She goes on to say if you don’t have gift cards then candy bars, lip balm, or other little treats to give to your flight attendants work too. “We will know where you’re sitting, we will know what you look like, and the whole crew will make sure you’re taken care of.”

Commenters Are Split

Many in the comment section were supportive of her tips. One stated, “People don’t know how a random act of kindness can really turn around someone’s whole entire day. Be kind!!”

Another stated, “Love this idea! I hate watching the flight attendants being spoken to and treated so badly by others.”

However, others were somewhat skeptical and annoyed that people expected gifts for good service. “I didn’t know I had to give people things to receive kindness,” stated one commenter.

Another wrote, “For what a ticket costs, I should be treated well anyway. I don’t treat students who give gifts better than the kids who don’t.”

Whether or not you choose to follow her advice, the best advice is to be kind to everyone, especially people that work with the public. Kindness will go a long way.

Airline Employee Shares Their Favorite Bag That Counts As A Personal Item But Carries 7+ Days Worth Of Clothes https://www.suggest.com/airline-employee-favorite-travel-bag-ebag-mother-lode-backpack/2631511/ Thu, 31 Mar 2022 22:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2631511

Budget travel is undoubtedly challenging, which makes packing for the situation even more difficult. However, TikToker Megan Homme has cracked the code. As an airline employee as well as a travel enthusiast, Homme enjoys sharing buzzworthy travel tips with her fans.

Homme is all about inspiring adventurers to maximize their time jet-setting around the globe without breaking the bank. Whether it’s saving money on travel or being more comfortable in the airport, Homme spills the tea. However, one of her most recent travel tips has gone viral and garnered over 5.5 million views on TikTok.

So, what’s the noteworthy tip? A backpack that holds several days’ worth of luggage but counts as a personal item. In short, Homme found the ideal bag for travelers who don’t want to pay extra for their luggage.

The Only Travel Bag You’ll Ever Need

In part two of her TikTok video dubbed “random travel tips from an airline worker,” Megan Homme reveals the game-changing travel bag. She explains, “when you’re traveling on a really cheap ticket sometimes you can only bring a personal item that fits under the seat.”

For frequent budget travelers, trying to pack as much into a limited space is daunting. There is hardly any room in typical travel bags, and sticking to the rules is still important. In lieu of paying baggage fees, Homme says a coworker recommended eBags Mother Lode Travel Backpack.

@meganhomme

didn’t realize how midwestern I am until I heard myself say bag 15 times in this video #traveltips #travel #travelhack #flying #luggage

♬ Two Weeks – Grizzly Bear

Homme reveals that it’s not your ordinary backpack, explaining that, “it’s incredible because it zips open like a suitcase.” Unlike other travel bags, the Mother Lode exceeds Homme’s expectations. “This bag literally fits so much.” she says, “ I did 11 days in South America and I didn’t even wear everything I packed in it.”

Many viewers were concerned as to whether or not the Mother Lode bag would fit under the seat, but Homme set the record straight, saying, “I’ve used this backpack as my personal item on a ton of different airlines and it does fit under the seat.”

Other TikTokers who own the Mother Lode bag confirm this holy grail of bags can definitely fit under the seat. One helpful tip, however, is to make sure you don’t overpack your bag so much that it won’t fit. Instead of stuffing the bag to the brim, use packing cubes to maximize its space.

“If you want to travel really cheap but didn’t think you could do a trip with just a backpack you totally can,” Homme assures her viewers. If you pack this bag right, it may be all you need for your journey–as others have reported that it got them through a three-week trip through Europe. Now that’s impressive!

If Neck Pillows Aren’t Cutting It For You While Traveling, Try This Genius Solution Instead https://www.suggest.com/neck-brace-for-support-while-traveling/2630229/ Thu, 24 Mar 2022 21:25:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2630229 Woman uncomfortably holding neck during a flight.

If you’ve ever traveled extensively by train, plane, or automobile, you’ve likely tried napping on the various modes of transportation. Napping while you’re sitting up is difficult, and most of the time it’s just a no-go.

If you are lucky enough to fall asleep, you’ve probably experienced a stiff neck, pain, and/or a headache afterward. Sometimes neck pillows don’t even help as they often lack real support. Luckily, there is something commonly found on the market that may solve your travel pains.

Goodbye Neck Pillows, Hello Support

“Guys, I have come up with one of the best ideas of my life.”

Such were the words of one very enthusiastic young woman who shared her latest revelation on TikTok. User @hellokristen said that she’s purchased several travel pillows throughout her life and none of them worked for her. “I wish something would just hold my neck in place, kind of like a neck brace.” Which is when she thought, ‘why don’t I just buy a neck brace?’ So, she did.

“If I am traveling for more than 8 hours, I do not care how I look,” she stated. “It’s all about comfort.” For those who aren’t as confident, she adds, “You can wear a big sweater or put a big scarf around it, it’s not that bad.”

Brace Yourself For Serious Comfort

Neck braces, or cervical collars as they’re otherwise known, will keep your head and neck stable while you snooze. Newer versions are typically made with breathable and comfortable materials. Here are a few to consider if you have travel plans in the near future.

VELPEAU Neck Brace

Velpeau neck brace

The VELPEAU Neck Brace comes in various sizes, designs, and colors to fit you and your needs. Particularly, they recommend their Dual-Use or Enhanced designs for traveling as they offer even more support than the base comfort design.

“The traditional travel pillows did not work for me. One, the padding of those pillows were never enough to support my neck and woke up with neck pain,” wrote one reviewer. “The soft neck brace is a great alternative for me…it keeps my neck straight and I get no neck pain after sleeping a few hours in my airline seat. I recommend people to try it.”

CozyHealth Heated Neck Brace

Cozyhealth neck brace

Consider this the Cadillac of neck braces. Ergonomically designed, the unique shape ensures comfort on the shoulders, chest, and chin in addition to supporting your next.

Plus, it comes with three interchangeable pads; a mesh pad that can hold a hot/cold gel pack, a magnetic therapy pad, and a USB-powered heating pad. If on the go, simply plug the heating pad into a power bank for mobile comfort.

Vive Neck Brace

Vive neck brace

For a simple, no-frills option, we love this foam collar from Vive. Available in black, white, or nude, the 3-in tall brace is made from latex-free foam that is both soft and breathable. Simply wrap and secure with the integrated fastener that providers for a custom fit.

One reviewer referred to the Vive Neck Brace as their go-to travel pillow, citing it perfect for airplane travel as it’s lightweight and incredibly soft.

If you experience motion sickness while traveling, there are also glasses to help with that. We recommend you wear the neck brace and glasses together. But beware, if they’re other travelers around, you may end up going viral.

If You Ever Get Bumped From A Flight, You Could Be Entitled To 4X The Value Of Your Ticket

If You Ever Get Bumped From A Flight, You Could Be Entitled To 4X The Value Of Your Ticket https://www.suggest.com/how-to-get-compensated-if-bumped-from-flight/2630107/ Thu, 24 Mar 2022 10:25:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2630107 White airplane on a yellow background.

Traveling is stressful enough. The long flights, potential luggage issues, and sub-par food can start to take a toll. But, when a flight overbooks and you’re left to either volunteer to be put on a later flight or possibly be bumped involuntarily, it sucks. However, according to Erika Kullberg, it could suck a lot less.

The TikTok Lawyer

Erika Kullberg is an attorney who has made a name for herself on TikTok. While videos related to getting out of debt, Roth IRAs, and stocks don’t sound super enthralling, she’s made them cute and helpful. One video, titled What airlines don’t want you to know about getting “bumped”, has over 50 million views, and for good reason.

Reading the terms or the fine print can definitely be beneficial, and typically big businesses hope that you don’t read them. But, luckily, Kullberg has done the work for us. Basically, Kullberg states in the viral video that if you’re “bumped” from a flight you are entitled to compensation. And, the U.S. Department of Transportation backs this up.

How To Get That Money

Airlines over-book on purpose to make up for people who don’t show up or cancel last minute, ensuring that the flight is as profitable as possible. But, when everyone for the flight shows up at the gate, it can quickly turn into a problem.

The first thing to do when you’re bumped is to ask when the next flight is available. This matters because the length of the delay will affect how much money you receive. If it’s only a one-hour delay, you’re out of luck and won’t be awarded compensation. For a two-hour delay, you can receive two times the amount of your one-way ticket. And, for anything over two hours, you can receive four times the amount of your one-way ticket. Some airlines, however, may limit the compensation to a certain amount.

@erikakullberg

What airlines don’t want you to know about getting “bumped” 🤯 #lawyer #travel #money

♬ original sound – Money Lawyer Erika

There are a few stipulations, though. According to the US Department of Transportation, you’re entitled to compensation if you have a confirmed reservation, checked in to your flight on time, arrived at the departure gate on time, and the airline cannot get you to your destination within one hour of your flight’s original arrival time.

There are also possible situations in which you wouldn’t be compensated. If the aircraft changes to a smaller plane, the flight is departing from a foreign country, or a passenger is downgraded from a higher class of seating, you wouldn’t be eligible for compensation.

Still, it is always important to know your rights so you don’t potentially end up losing time and money.

Save Your Money–Here’s How To Spot A Fake Review On Amazon https://www.suggest.com/how-to-spot-fake-review-amazon/2626353/ Mon, 14 Mar 2022 22:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2626353 Hand holding credit card and using laptop. Businesswoman or entrepreneur working from home

Amazon has millions of products available for sale. Which can actually make it quite difficult to find exactly what you’re looking for. The one thing that helps make the buying process easier is checking out the product reviews.

If you see an item with hundreds or thousands of five-star reviews, that must be an indication that it’s a good buy. Right? Well, not necessarily. It’s possible that many of those reviews are fake. Especially when it’s a product or brand you’re not familiar with. Why does this happen and how can you spot a fake? Keep reading to find out.

Fake Amazon Reviews Are Common

We all know that you can’t believe everything you read on the internet, and Amazon product reviews are no exception. But how do you spot them?

Fake reviews usually go to the extremes—either positive or negative. They can be written by Amazon users on behalf of a brand or a third-party seller without the reviewer actually purchasing or using the product.

Or, they can be written by someone who has purchased the item but has made a deal with the seller to post a glowing review in return for refunds, incentives, or freebies.

Brands and third-party sellers sometimes use fake reviews to mislead potential customers into purchasing their products. These types of fakes will exaggerate a product’s quality and usefulness.

Other times, extremely negative fake reviews are used as a tool to discourage people from purchasing a product from a competitor.

Knowing that fake Amazon reviews exist is important when making your purchasing decisions. Fake positives can manipulate the ratings, and put subpar products at the top of search results.

How To Spot Fake Amazon Reviews

Amazon shopping doesn’t come with a manual or a list of directions. There isn’t a particular method for spotting a fake review. But, there are some red flags to look out for that can indicate something’s not right.

Like we told you earlier, fake reviews are usually extreme one way or the other. Companies will pay for five-star ratings for their own products. On the flip side, they’ll pay for one-star reviews for competitor products.

This is why it’s a good idea to check out the detailed reviews in the middle, with two, three, or four stars. These reviews are most likely authentic and will give you a realistic idea of a product’s pros and cons.

1. Check The Percentages

If a product has a high percentage of five-star reviews and a handful of one-star reviews–but almost nothing in the middle–that’s a huge red flag. That can be a sign that the five-star reviews have been paid for, and the one-star reviews are actual unhappy customers who wasted their money.

2. Is It A ‘Verified Purchase’?

Amazon reviewers who actually purchased the product will often have a “verified purchase” badge next to their name. This isn’t a sure thing, but it’s a good indication that the review is legit.

3. Read The Product Q&A

Writing a glowing fake review is pretty easy. It’s a lot harder to lie in the product’s questions and answers section. That’s where you’ll find answers to common customer questions, and they can get pretty detailed.

If something has a lot of reviews, it should have a Q&A section filled with comments about the product’s quality, size, ease of assembly, color, etc. These answers should give you a decent idea of what you’re purchasing.

4. Be Skeptical Of Short And/Or Vague Reviews

Fake Amazon reviews are often short and extremely vague. If the reviewer simply wrote “Amazing!” or “Love it!” it’s possible that’s a fake review. The same goes for comments like “terrible” or “the worst.”

5. The Review Mentions A Competitor

If you read a review that mentions a competing brand or product–telling you not to spend your money on what you are looking at and directing you elsewhere–that should make your Spidey senses tingle.

How To Use Third-Party Tools

Paper cartons or parcel with a shopping cart logo and credit card on a laptop keyboard.
(Natee Photo/Shutterstock.com)

If you don’t want to spend your time combing through the reviews and the Q&A section, you can use a browser extension or app that is specifically designed to evaluate Amazon product reviews to determine their authenticity. These third-party tools are not affiliated with Amazon, but they will weed out the bogus five-star ratings.

Fakespot and ReviewMeta are browser extensions that also have apps for Android and iOS that use an algorithm to flush out fake reviews. You can also cut and paste the URL of the Amazon product page in either tool to get the data you are looking for.

Fakespot works with Amazon reviews, as well as eBay, Best Buy, Sephora, and Walmart. After it performs its analysis, it provides a letter grade that rates the quality of a product’s reviews. If it gives you an “A,” that means the reviews appear to be copacetic. But it’s not a guarantee that the product is great.

If Fakespot gives you an “F,” that means the algorithm has spotted a bunch of fakes. But it doesn’t necessarily mean the product is a bust.

ReviewMeta is a metric tool that only works with Amazon reviews. It will analyze a product page and filter out bogus reviews. Instead of a grade, ReviewMeta will tell you the percentage of reviews that it’s filtered out and give you an adjusted rating.

For example, I purchased a foot massager recently with a 4.4 rating Amazon rating. After running it through ReviewMeta, the potential fake reviews were removed and the rating was adjusted to 4.3.

Be aware that most popular products will have a handful of fake or misleading reviews, but that won’t change their overall rating. If the overwhelming majority of reviews are legit, you should be good to go.

If you believe you’ve spotted a fake review, notify Amazon by clicking “report abuse.” It doesn’t matter if you purchase the product or not.

She is standing and carrying luggage.

Ah yes, spring break is just around the corner, which can only mean one thing: it’s time to dust off those suitcases, now that lockdowns are a thing of the past. But, before you proceed with any grand plans, you might want to brush up on a few things. Like, discovering some mind-blowing packing tips to keep you calm when you travel. Before you head into the city, up into the mountains, or to a coastal paradise, consider these three genius packing tips from a flight attendant.

Best Packing Tips From An Experienced Flight Attendent

As a flight attendant, Kat Kamalani knows a thing or two about travel. In fact, her popular TikTik account is full of travel tips, from must-have travel items to flight booking and hotel hacks. However, for those eager to learn how to organize their luggage like pros, Kamalani has you covered!

1. Heavy Items On The Bottom

As Kamalani opened her suitcase, she emphasized the importance of weight distribution. “First things, first, you’re gonna wanna make sure your heaviest items are at the very bottom,” she explained. “This is gonna help your luggage not tip over when you are traveling,” she added.

2. Packing Cubes To Keep Organized

After Kamalani opened her suitcase, we get our first glimpse of packing tip number two. With all of her clothes neatly packed into cubes, she’ll no longer need to rummage through luggage on vacation to find the perfect outfit.

According to Kamalani, packing cubes are helpful in identifying whose is whose, as well as in keeping things in order. In a similar way to dresser drawers at home, packing cubes aid you in keeping your belongings organized while you’re traveling. You’ll never want to travel without them again. Guaranteed!

3. Press N Seal Wrap For Jewlery

Among all our packing tips, number three received the most attention. Packing jewelry is a complete headache. There is no simple way to pack jewelry since you always end up with a tangled necklace or a lost earring.

Fortunately, Kamalani has some answers, and fellow TikTokers can’t believe they hadn’t thought of it sooner! “Put your jewelry in Glad wrap to prevent it from getting tangled,” she explained. One commenter said they’re, “Mind blown 🤯,” while another simply said, “Press and seal 🤯🤯.” Surely, you’ll never tangle your necklaces again with this brilliant packing tip!

If You Or A Loved One Suffers From Motion Sickness, These Innovative Glasses Are Here To Help https://www.suggest.com/suffers-motion-sickness-innovative-glasses-help/2626886/ Wed, 09 Mar 2022 23:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2626886 Woman in a car wearing special glasses to help curb motion sickness

If you’ve ever had motion sickness from a long road trip, plane ride, or bumpy boat ride you know how miserable it can be. Forget passing the time by looking out the window or reading a book. Those just make nausea and motion sickness worse. Wouldn’t you do just about anything to fix it? I bet you might even wear goofy-looking glasses to feel better, right?

Well, if you’re willing to get some weird looks, there is a product out there that could help relieve most of your motion sickness symptoms. According to one TikToker, these Hion Anti-Motion Sickness Smart Glasses actually work.

@jenajibreen

Reply to @kaaatemo finally tried the motion sickness glasses in the car! final verdict is that they work well for reading as long as u sit still 🙂

♬ original sound – Jena

How Do The Glasses Work?

I assume most people’s first question would be, “But, how do they work?” I know it was mine. Basically, these glasses create an artificial horizon. The blue liquid moves around as the vehicle turns, which tricks your eyes and your brain. The glasses don’t have lenses but have four frames, two for your central vision, and two for your peripheral vision. The blue liquid helps balance out the information your brain receives. A study from 2018 listed similar glasses as an effective non-drug intervention for motion sickness.

According to the directions, you should put the glasses on at the first signs of motion sickness and then take them off after 10 minutes. The directions also state to look at a book or cellphone (something stationary) while you’re wearing them.

TikTok Science Project

One TikToker tried the glasses out at the start of a two-hour road trip. “Car rides are usually very bad for me, especially while I’m sitting in the back” she started the video by stating. “So I elected, for science, to sit way back in the van.” She said that after 10 minutes of ride time she would typically be nauseous, but said that while she’s not sure how the glasses work, they seemed to be working. Her only symptom overall was that her head hurt, “a little bit.”

Then, she attempted a few “small tests” to check the efficacy of the glasses. She said two things that typically make her motion sickness worse are turning backward and reading. “It’s not ideal, but I’m not nauseous,” she said as she looked out the back window. After reading for a while, she reported that they “do work.” If you read, look forward, or look side to side a little bit, they work, she concluded. She doesn’t recommend looking out the back of a moving vehicle, though.

This Simple Tip Can Save You Hundreds On Your Next Flight https://www.suggest.com/tip-save-hundreds-next-flight/2621118/ Fri, 18 Feb 2022 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2621118 Airplane in the sky at sunrise or sunset

With so many travel sites and aggregators on the internet, finding a good deal on a flight and buying airline tickets has never been easier. But even when you think you’ve found the best price, it’s possible that a lower fare will pop up after you’ve made your purchase. When that happens—what do you do?

Is it possible to get that new low rate? Can you get a refund for the difference between your purchase price and the new deal? Well—if you have flights booked with Southwest—the answer to those questions is yes.

The ’24-Hour Rule’

There is an official policy from the Department of Transportation concerning airfare price drops.

The policy states that if you happen to stumble upon a lower fare within 24 hours of booking a flight to or from the United States—and your flight is at least seven days away—you can take advantage of the 24-hour rule. This rule allows you to get a full refund for your original purchase price and buy a new ticket at the lower rate.

However, some airlines and third-party ticket sites go a bit further and will allow you to cancel your tickets for free. Even if your departure date is less than a week away.

If more than 24 hours have passed since booking your flight, just a handful of airlines will issue a refund due to a price drop. But, that refund will most likely be issued in the form of a travel credit.

Depending on the airline, you will also get charged a fee for making these changes. For domestic fares, the fee is usually between $50 and $150. For international fares, the fee ranges between $250 and $750. But, those fees ruin the whole process because they will most likely cancel the savings of booking the lower fare!

We should note that all of this applies to non-refundable fares only. If you purchased a refundable fare, those can be canceled and rebooked without penalty. So you can easily get that lower rate if the fare goes down.

The Southwest ‘Transfarency’ Policy

The refund policies due to a price drop vary greatly among airlines and third-party sites. But the one we’ve found that makes the process free and as easy as possible is Southwest Airlines. They have an extremely flexible cancellation policy that is part of what they call “Transfarency.”

The concept is to offer customers low fares with no hidden fees. But the one aspect of this policy that people don’t seem to know much about concerns price drops. Southwest will credit you the fare difference if the price drops. In other words, you’ll always get the cheapest fare possible when flying Southwest–as long as you pay attention.

No matter when you book your flight with Southwest, if the price drops before boarding you can claim the price difference and get a refund. But this doesn’t happen automatically. You have to keep your eyes open for those price changes. And if you see one, you must actively request a refund for the difference.

You Can Always Modify A Southwest Airlines Ticket

Southwest’s policy is that any flight booking can be changed or canceled without any fees. Unlike other airlines—like American, Delta, and United—whose policy doesn’t exclude the cheapest fares. And there’s no requirement that your flight originates in a specific country.

No matter what ticket level you’ve purchased and no matter your departure location or destination—you can always modify a Southwest ticket for free. And you can do it up to 10 minutes before your flight’s scheduled departure time.

It’s An Easy Process

If you discover a price drop, simply login to your Southwest Rapid Rewards account and scroll down until you find “My Upcoming Trips.” Next, click the “change flight” link on the reservation you want to change.

On the next page, you’ll need to select the specific flight you want to modify. If you booked a round-trip ticket, you’ll have the option to change it all. Or, you can change just one way and leave the other alone.

The next step is to find a new ticket on that same flight, or a new flight. Southwest will show you all of the options available. But instead of showing you the price of the ticket, they will list the price or point difference.

When you’ve found the flight you want, click on it and then click “continue” at the bottom of the page. This is when you’ll get your confirmation from Southwest for the flight, and you’ll see the total price difference that will be credited to your account as “Travel Funds.”

The final page will feature a reconciled summary that will show how much cash or points will be refunded to you.

Now that you know how easy it is to get a refund from Southwest—and to make changes without any fees—we encourage you to take full advantage. Happy traveling!

10 Stargazing Events You Can’t Miss In 2022 https://www.suggest.com/stargazing-events-2022/2620731/ Sun, 13 Feb 2022 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2620731 Silhouette of couple sitting on car and using binoculars to look out at colorful starry sky

Some of the best things in life are free, including stargazing. Mother Nature is a huge show-off, and her flair for the dramatic is unmatched. From powerful storms to breathtaking night skies, we get to enjoy these performances at no cost.

This year, Mother Nature has quite the celestial setlist. Now through December, you can enjoy extraordinary planetary movement, meteor showers, and eclipses. The majority of these events will be visible to the naked eye.

So, all you need is a dark sky—comfy blankets recommended, but not required. Mark your calendars now; you’re not going to want to miss any of these starry shows.

1. March 24th-April 5th: Planetary Dance

Venus and Mars are currently in conjunction flying side-by-side in space. The planets are slowly approaching Saturn. Starting March 24th, Venus, Mars, and Saturn will be visible in a triangular cluster in the low SE skies. The best viewing time is an hour before sunrise.

Mother Nature plays the ultimate April Fool’s Prank when, on April 1st, the planets visibly shift into a straight line. Finally, Saturn will appear to approach Mars. The red and ringed planet reach peak closeness on April 5th.

2. April 30th: Venus-Jupiter Conjunction

Later that same month, we have another planetary showstopper. Just before dawn on April 30th, Venus and Jupiter reach conjunction. From our vantage point on Earth, the two planets appear to merge into one star. You’ll need binoculars or a telescope and a bit of lucky timing.

Since this conjunction happens so close to sunrise, you’ll have to catch this event just before the dawn sky begins to brighten. Find an unobstructed line of sight toward the SE horizon. Look for a small star and a noticeably bigger star twinkling close together.

3. May 5th-6th: Eta Aquarids

Planets are impressive, but the real show stoppers are the meteor showers. These remarkable displays occur several times a year and are named after the constellation from which they appear to radiate. Some showers produce more shooting stars than others.

The Eta Aquarids will take place pre-dawn on May 5th. This shower will appear to radiate from Aquarius on the SE horizon. North America can expect only a modest show of about 10-20 meteors an hour. However, it might be worth trying to catch a glimpse of a rogue meteor.

Debris from Halley’s comet forms the Eta Aquarids, which means you might be to see at least a small part of the comet before its return to Earth’s atmosphere in 2061.

4. May 15th-16th: Flower Moon Total Lunar Eclipse

(Jurik Peter/Shutterstock.com)

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon. Earth’s shadow shades the Moon, giving it a unique, reddish appearance. Unlike solar eclipses, you can view full and partial lunar eclipses with the naked eye.

The Flower Moon, named for its springtime appearance, will begin to go dark at 9:32 pm ET on May 15th. It will reach its peak redness and darkness at 12:11 am ET, May 16th.

5. June 18th-27th: Major Planetary Alignment

Two months after Venus and Mars separate, the planets realign—this time with friends. Starting June 18th, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus will line up across the early morning sky.

As if Mother Nature were conducting a planetary roll call, the Moon will pass by each planet for easy ID. This lunar assistance will be particularly helpful on June 24th and 25th when a crescent moon passes by Uranus. Finally, on 27th, the Moon will help point out the faint and elusive Mercury.

6. July 28th-29th: Delta Aquarids

Perseid Meteor Shower. Collage of photos taken on the night of August 12, 2016
(Makarov Konstantin/Shutterstock.com)

Like the Eta Aquarids, the Delta Aquarids appear to radiate from the constellation Aquarius. This meteor shower is the most visible in the southern United States. Thanks to a new Moon on July 28th, the usually small, humble shower will get an extra visibility boost.

To catch the Delta Aquarids, look to the sky just before dawn. Around 10-20 meteors will shoot across the sky per hour, so you’ll need to pay close attention.

7. August 11th-13th: The Perseids

The Perseids usually blow the Delta Aquarids out of the water. But this year, the two might be more similar in show. The Perseids appear to radiate from Perseus in early August. These late summer showers can produce 150-200 meteors per hour, making for a dazzling display.

Unfortunately, the Perseids coincide with a full Moon this year. Not even the Perseids’ impressive fireballs can beat that glare. So, if you want to catch a Perseid (or 200), wait to stargaze until two to three hours before dawn.

8. November 7th-8th: Total Lunar Eclipse

North and South America, Australia, Asia, and parts of Europe can enjoy another total lunar eclipse in early November. The western US will be able to see this eclipse in its entirety, while eastern North America will only see partial phases as the Moon sets in the west.

The eclipse will begin on November 7th, 2:02 am PT. The Moon will enter the deepest part of Earth’s shadow at 2:59 am PT, and at 3:41, the eclipse ends.

9. November 11th-18th: The Leonids

Meteors falling
(Geermy/Shutterstock.com)

In 1966, thousands of meteors streaked across the sky in a matter of minutes. The Leonid Meteor Shower produced so many shooting stars that they fell like rain. No Leonid display has lived up to that breathtaking show since. Still, you never know what Mother Nature has up her sleeve.

Beginning in the evening of November 17th through just after midnight on the 18th, the Leonids will send 10-15 meteors per hour across the sky. You might see nothing, or you might catch an unexpected, once-in-a-lifetime meteor storm.

10. December 13th-14th: The Geminids

The last stargazing event of 2022 will take place on the evening of December 13th and the morning of the 14th. As its name suggests, the Geminids radiate from Castor and Pollux, two bright stars in the Gemini constellation.

You can catch the Geminids from just before midnight until about 2 am local time. On a dark night, you can see over 50 meteors per hour. A waning gibbous moon might block some visibility later in the night, but your chances of spotting a shooting star are still pretty high.

If you’re looking for a fun travel experience this year that won’t break the bank, booking your lodging via Airbnb is a must. Thanks to this private vacation rental site—which allows people to rent out everything from full homes to tents—you don’t have to drop hundreds of dollars a night for unique accommodations.

Would it be fun to rent out an Italian-style hilltop mansion on 220 acres for a nightly rate that’s higher than the cost of my car? Sure. But, you can find some incredible, outrageous places all over the globe that won’t set you back more than $50 per night. Here are some amazing bucket list ideas for budget travelers.

1. The Underground Hobbit Hole In Del Norte County, California

The Underground Hobbit Hole is 260-square foot earth-sheltered structure built into the side of a mountain. It’s part of a sustainable off-grid village, and rents for $48 per night. Features include one-of-a-kind architecture, stained glass windows, a center tree pillar, a breakfast nook with a Hobbit mushroom table, and a Hobbit Hole.

The primitive cabin does have running water, but no electricity. The common kitchen and bath facilities are located on the grounds. And you’ll also need to bring your own bedding. The life of a Hobbit isn’t a glamorous one.

2. An Eco Dome House Near Morant Bay, Jamaica

Casa J is an Eco Dome House located in the hills of St. Thomas Parish on a 63-acre Source Farm Ecovillage. For $40 per night, you get a bedroom with a balcony that has amazing views of the sea, plus a luxury bathroom.

For $45 per night, you can stay in a private room at this dome house in Mexico. While the post refers to this as a “dome house”, we think the phrase “tube house” is more appropriate. This unforgettable getaway allows you to connect with nature, with hiking trails, a path to the “plutonia” cave, and a path to the “el tarta” mine.

While living space is sparse, the property does feature a separate kitchen, gazebo, bathroom, and barbecue area. It also has hot water, wifi, and an outdoor dining area.

4. Leafy Greens Mushrooms In Chiang Mai, Thailand

You’ll get the entire Earth house to yourself when you rent this mushroom in Thailand, also known as Leafy Greens. It was built as a retreat center where people can go to refresh their souls and minds.

At a rate of just $11 per night, the space features a single floor with a bunk bed. The garden outside is a communal hangout space with an outdoor kitchen and pizza oven. There’s also an organic herb and vegetable garden.

5. A Cabin Made Of Straw Panels In Harju County, Estonia

Known as the Voose Home of Sun, this heated sleeping cabin in Estonia rents for $45 per night. This unique building made of straw panels is touted as being “full of positive energy” with access to the “crystal-clear air of the Kõrvemaa forests.”

The cabin is essentially a small bedroom for two people. The property features a common toilet and shower in a special building. For an extra fee, you get access to the modern kitchen, washing machine and dryer, and sauna.

6. The Chaos Oasis In Toledo District, Belize

For $50 per night, you can stay at the Chaos Oasis in Belize—the first construction in the district made entirely from recyclable materials. It is located right next to the Mayan ruins and the Lubaantun archeological park. The village of San Pedro Columbia is a 10-minute walk away, and it features bird watching, river swimming, and chocolate making.

Your casita features a double bed, and there is a separate bathroom with toilets and showers. The bottle house catches its own rainwater, and there is an outside shower attached for that “in the wild” experience. But be advised–there is no internet access.

7. La Redonda In Querétaro, Mexico

La Redonda in Mexico offers a comfortable space that’s perfect for a couple. Designed to live in harmony with the environment, this property is a relaxing escape from the daily grind. Located in a biosphere reserve, La Redonda is a mud cabin that is 15 minutes from the historic center of Jalpan Pueblo Mágico.

The property features a dry composting toilet, solar heaters for the showers, and rainwater harvesting. But if you want to use the grill, you’ll need to bring your own charcoal.

8. Cozy Cabin In The Middle Of Mae Hong Son, Thailand

(Mark/Airbnb)

You’ll get the entire bungalow to yourself when you rent this cozy space in Thailand for just $25 per night. Superhost Mark keeps things simple with these rentals, but they are equipped with air conditioning and a private bathroom.

The peaceful setting is pretty quiet, but you will wake up with the rooster crowing in the morning. There is also a dog and cat that like to play in the garden, and you can feed the cows with bananas.

Airbnb has a ton of vacation rentals for less than $50 per night, at locations all over the world. Which is proof that there’s really no need to bust your budget when you travel.

Why Disneyland Has An ‘F’ Rating From The Better Business Bureau https://www.suggest.com/disneyland-has-f-rating-from-better-business-bureau/2616928/ Fri, 28 Jan 2022 21:00:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2616928 Mickey Mouse pointing towards Sleeping Beauty's Castle at Disneyland in California

The Better Busines Bureau is a longstanding nonprofit specializing in consumer protection. The agency ranks businesses on a scale from A+ through F. Disneyland, supposedly the “Happiest Place on Earth,” has an F. What is that about?

So Many Complaints

Disney is not Better Business Bureau accredited. It’s racked up over 100 complaints in 2021 alone. Most of these complaints concern problems with a product or service. In reality, that means a lot of COVID-19 and cost complaints. Tickets to Disneyland are notoriously expensive, so this isn’t really a surprise. One user complained about “bait and switch tactics” brought on from a lottery system.

Disney appears responsive in the comments, with just about every complaint at least getting addressed. Some are satisfactory, though some demand restitution. A business as large as Disney is going to attract complaints, but a rating of F should signify a business to be avoided at all costs… right?

All Just A Racket?

Over the 2010s, the Better Business Bureau has attracted criticism for pay-to-play practices. ABC News did a piece proving businesses that paid membership fees would automatically receive an A+ rating, while F’s were dolled to those who wouldn’t play ball. One business owner put it simply: “they’re more interested in the money than their credibility.”

The Ritz-Carlton and Disneyland are nonmembers. In 2010, both had F ratings. Wolfgang Puck, who worked at Ritz Carlton at the time, said “if you become a member… [they think] you should get an A. But if you don’t pay, it’s very difficult to get an A.” After this bombshell, the Better Business Bureau claims it has changed its practices.

Fast forward to 2022, and some have changed. The Ritz-Carlton is still not accredited, but many of its California locations do have an A+ rating. Disney still has an F for not just Disneyland, but Disney World in Florida as well. It still doesn’t pay its accreditation fees, so perhaps not too much has changed.

Is It Just A Parks Issue?

Perhaps the problem isn’t with Disney, but with the amusement park industry as a whole. Nearby Knott’s Berry Farm holds a D- rating, but Universal Studios Hollywood B. These ratings are dolled by local chapters, so who knows what criteria they’re formally using.

It sure looks like Disney could boost its rating if it decided to pay, but at the end of the day, it’s going to make money despite itself. Disney parks rake in billions a year with or without a high rating from the Better Business Bureau.

4 US Islands Where You Can Actually Buy A Home For Under $150K https://www.suggest.com/us-island-homes-under-150k/2616382/ Thu, 27 Jan 2022 23:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2616382 Photo of wooden cabin on beach near coconut trees

From idyllic views to tight-knit communities, there’s a lot to love about island living. But unless you’re a lucky native or wealthy transplant, island life can seem more like a pipe dream than a real possibility.

However, owning an island home is more plausible than you might think. With a bit of digging and inspiration, you could be living the islander life in no time.

The Pros And Cons Of A Year-Round Vacation

As with any location, there are pros and cons to living on an island year-round. One of the most noticeable benefits of island life is the scenery. You get to witness Mother Nature in all of her extremes, from calm and serene to wild and powerful.

Additionally, islands tend to have close-knit communities due to their limited geographical area. This makes them especially appealing to those who prefer a slower, small-town pace.

Taking up residence on an island also means greater access to fresh foods, be it produce or seafood. Of course, some groceries cost more due to high shipping costs. But striking an affordable balance is possible, albeit a little tricky.

Finally, an island offers isolation and relaxation. Those seeking solitude would be hard-pressed to find a better spot than in the middle of the ocean.

And despite a red-hot housing market, it’s easier than you think to find island real estate for less than $150k.

1. Hawaii: 137 Islands In One State

Honolulu, Hawaii. Waikiki beach and Honolulu's skyline.
(emperorcosar/Shutterstock.com)

The United States’ 50th state is actually a chain of 137 islands and islets. Featuring mountains, volcanos, and lush forests–Hawaii is a paradise that requires no passport.

Hawaii’s capital of Honolulu offers many affordable bungalows and condos. For only $129,000, you can enjoy small island life with a big city vibe in a sleek, modernized condo. This quaint apartment half a block from the ocean is only $105,000.

The island state also features modestly priced homes ripe for renovations. This 1,200-square foot fixer-upper in Captain Cook is only $109,500, which means you can use all that money you saved to create your oceanic dream home.

Crime rates in Hawaii are relatively low, and the overall culture is warm, fun, and welcoming. But there are natural dangers to consider, like tropical rains and lava flows.

However, these are relatively small prices to pay for a slice of paradise.

2. Deal Island: Maryland’s Marshy Getaway

Aerial shot of boats in Chesapeake Bay in Deal Island, Maryland
(tokar/Shutterstock.com)

Not all islands are covered in palm trees and sunshine. For those who enjoy the visceral power of the Northeast Atlantic Ocean, Maryland’s many off-shore islands are the perfect destination.

Deal Island is a small fishing community in the Chesapeake Bay. The island’s roots stretch back to colonial times.

The island also features affordable housing, like this three-bed, one-bath bungalow for $109,900. You can even stay within walking distance of the ocean in this two-story home for $149,900. Or separate yourself from the water in an even more affordable $89,000 ranch.

The islands off of Maryland’s coast overflow with history and cultural heritage. Nearby Smith Island features similarly priced homes and a unique dialect borne of its Irish, Scottish, and English settlers.

Like all small islands, climate change stands to threaten this community’s way of life. But for the time being, Deal Island remains an interesting relic of American history.

3. Mustang Island: Texan White Sands

(Tricia Daniel/Shutterstock.com)

Can’t decide between the west and east coast? Opt for the Gulf Coast with Mustang Island, Texas. Located off Corpus Christi, this 18-mile-long island is famous for its beautiful beaches and rich wildlife.

Enjoy the dunes of this narrow barrier island in a $150,000 condo overlooking the beach. Or start from scratch with a vacant seaside lot. You get all the benefits of an HOA, including grounds upkeep and a public pool, without the cookie-cutter look.

Mustang Island State Park is a short drive away from any property on the island. The park features camping and RV spots, a paddling trail, and some of the best shallow-water fishing in Texas.

The population of Mustang Island is around 30,000, making it just small enough to feel close-knit without being overbearing.

Mustang Island provides all the fresh seafood, unique wildlife, and powdery sand of a tropical island without the headache of moving overseas.

4. Washington Island: A Great Lakes Gem

(Hank Erdmann/Shutterstock.com)

Who said you had to leave the Midwest to enjoy island life? Washington Island is a small island located between Green Bay and Lake Michigan off the coast of Wisconsin.

This cozy cabin sitting on a near-acre lot is currently listed at only $137,500. The property offers a nearby waterfront area with a dock, a large great room, and natural privacy.

Or you can start from scratch in a lush, emerald green forest lot listed at $75,000. The dense plants guard against harsh lake winds, while the deciduous leaves offer an exciting, multi-colored backdrop year-round.

Washington Island features one of the oldest and largest Icelandic communities in the US. It’s also the home of the Midwest’s largest lavender farm, three parks, two beaches, and a fiber arts school.

If you love bitter cocktails, then you’ll be in good company on Washington Island. The small island’s population consumes more bitters than anyone else in the world. Bottoms up!

Here’s The Secret To Keeping Your Indoor Succulents Alive This Winter https://www.suggest.com/how-to-care-for-indoor-succulents/2615484/ Wed, 26 Jan 2022 17:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2615484 Several succulent plants in bloom

Succulents are a wonderful choice for both novices and seasoned growers alike. A charming addition to any home decor, these vibrant, fun, and unique-looking plants are easy to take care of and a joy to collect. Despite being easy to care for, there may still be some challenges for indoor succulent growers.

How To Keep Your Succulents Alive And Thriving

Since succulents can thrive indoors, many people believe they are able to survive anywhere inside the home. But as with any plant, succulents require the right placement, soil, watering schedule, and lighting to flourish. You can keep your succulents alive indoors for years to come by following a few simple tips.

1. Pay Attention To Watering

(PaniYani/Shutterstock.com)

One of the biggest misconceptions about succulents is how to correctly water them. Yes, it is true that these fleshy plants can survive droughts and intense heat. Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean they thrive in such conditions.

Succulents can survive some pretty harsh circumstances, including the dusty shelves of your living room bookcase. However, to make sure they stay alive and healthy, remember to water them properly. Also, keep in mind that overwatering can damage your plant as well. Succulents are prone to root rot from overwatering.

When watering succulents, follow these general guidelines: during the summer, water them once a week and once every two weeks during the winter. Succulent soil should not be moist or dusty. It’s also a good idea to grab a watering can that’s specifically designed to water succulents. One of our favorites is the Oubest Succulent Irrigation Bottle, which can be found on Amazon for a steal.

2. Use The Right Soil

(Maridav/Shutterstock.com)

Although it may be easy to leave succulent plants in the planters purchased at the store, according to MarthaStewart.com the right soil is essential for succulents. “Succulent mixes vary but generally contain a mix of sphagnum peat moss, perlite, and mycorrhizae to promote drainage and prevent soil compaction.”

One soil that we recommend is Superfly Bonsai Succulent and Cactus Mix. This blend is designed to provide the ideal combination of drainage and nutrition for succulents. It not only helps your plant retain water, but it also drains excess fluids away so you won’t have to worry about root rot.

3. Let Them See The Light

(Melissa39/Shutterstock.com)

Succulents love lots and lots of sunlight, so ensure they are placed in a bright spot. Lack of light or improper placement may cause succulents to grow taller to reach better lighting. Succulent growers refer to this phenomenon as “getting leggy.” Conversely, succulents that receive too much light may turn pale and go dormant. Keep a close eye on your leafy friend to make sure they’re receiving the correct amount of light.

One alternative to this is to use a grow light (we love this model from Aogled). These indoor plant lamps are adjustable and dimmable, so you can ensure your plant is always getting the right amount of light. This lamp also comes with a timer and remote for easy adjusting. “Even though I’ve only had this for a few days so far, I have already noticed that two plants that had some gaps have already straightened themselves out,” one five-star reviewer raved.

4. Choose The Right Planters

In much the same way how soil selection is critical when growing succulents, selecting the right terracotta pot is also very important. According to MarthaStewart.com, this is especially true for new growers. “The clay naturally wicks away moisture, and excess water can escape through the bottom. However, once you’re more familiar with succulents and their unique soil and watering needs, you can use almost any vessel, from teapots to dresser drawers.”

Moreover, the Potey Shallow Terracotta Succulent Planters are great for their moisture-wicking and drainage capabilities. Maintaining succulents and caring for them is both fun and rewarding. Take proper care of your indoor succulents and you will get enjoyment from them for years to come.

‘Bigger Than The White House,’ The Most Expensive House In America Costs $295 Million And Just Went On Sale–Check Out The Photos! https://www.suggest.com/what-is-most-expensive-house-america/2614718/ Wed, 26 Jan 2022 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2614718 photo of los angeles megamansion over pool

If you have an extra $295 million lying around, you could become the proud new owner of the most expensive house in America. Coined “The One,” this gargantuan mansion is located in Bel Air and will go to auction in February. With stunning panoramic views, luxurious accommodations, and enough room to house your extended family, you’ll likely never want to leave home again.

‘The One’ And Only

(Joe Bryant)

The massive house is less like a home and more like an all-inclusive resort. The home touts a massive list of amenities. A four-lane bowling alley, a 50-seat theater, a juice bar, and a sky deck with a putting green are only the beginning. Set upon a perch, stunning views include those of the Pacific Ocean, downtown Los Angeles, and the San Gabriel Mountains.

With over 100,000 sq feet of living space, the master bedroom alone is bigger than most homes. Book-lovers can live out their literary fantasies in the stunning two-story library that has its own balcony. Fitness buffs will enjoy the track, fitness club, and several infinity pools. There’s a cigar room, a full salon, a spa, and even a private nightclub.

With 21 bedrooms and 42 full bathrooms, the home is almost twice the size of the White House. The mega-mansion was expected to go to market for $500 million before the developer, Nile Niami, defaulted on several loans. The $295 million listing likely reflects a more tangible price. However, with the home going to auction, it will sell to the highest bidder unless it sells on the open market first.

Ten Years In The Making

It has taken the developer ten years to complete the massive undertaking. Niami, once a film producer, turned his attention to real estate in 2008 during the real estate crash because he believed luxury homes would be a less risky business venture. Turns out he was (mostly) right. He’s sold several homes since, including mansions to Sean Combs, Floyd Mayweather, and the Winklevoss twins. His last mega-mansion called “Opus” reportedly sold for $48.4 million.

The One is the largest modern home to date. The home’s architect Paul McClean is famous for his modern designs and environmentally sustainable practices. Often incorporating natural elements and water features into the design, McClean relies on simplicity and openness in his designs for a modern feel. The One is no exception. The mansion also features artwork from Mike Fields, a butterfly installation by Stephen Wilson, and a custom sculpture from Italian glass artist Simone Cenedese.

This Electric Blanket For Your Car Completely Changed My Morning Commute https://www.suggest.com/best-electric-blanket-car-morning-commute/2615054/ Sat, 22 Jan 2022 23:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2615054 A red heated blanket sitting in the back of a car with snow on the ground

As I sit here under my electric blanket, coffee in hand, I realize that writing this article is very fitting. I’m cold most of the time. When the temperature drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, you’ll find me with cozy socks, lots of layers, and a venti hot mocha. And, now that I’ve learned of another accessory that is a must-have for cold-weather rides, I’m ready to be cozy in my car too.

When you have to commute to work, especially in the winter, it can sometimes be uncomfortable, difficult, or even dangerous. So, along with your snow tires, roadside emergency kit, and Ember mug, consider getting this heated blanket to make your commute so much better.

Sure you can layer up for cold weather, but nothing beats a cozy blanket to ensure you’re warm and toasty. This 12V electric blanket comes highly rated and is perfect for those cold wintery days. It heats up quickly and is made of a plush fleece material that is warm on its own. Available in black and white, black and burgundy, and checkered cream and tan, the electric blanket plugs directly into your 12V DC outlet (formerly known as the cigarette lighter).

Made with safety in mind, the blanket has an automatic shut-off after thirty minutes of use. The power cord measures 72″ long and will reach most back seats comfortably. And, while we can’t recommend driving under the blanket (it could cause distracted driving) if you’re the passenger, it’ll be perfect for any ride, long or short.

Reviews Of The Sojoy Electric Car Blanket

One Amazon reviewer had a tip for maximum usage of the electric blanket. “I use this in the winter as a seat warmer–it’s awesome. I turn my car on with the remote and by the time I get in the car the seat [is] warm; love this blanket,” stated one reviewer.

Another reviewer had her passengers in mind when she purchased the blanket. “I have leather seats in my 10-year-old CRV. In the back, they are not heated. The heat vents are also only in the front. During the winter, the back of the car is cold. Not anymore! This thing plugs into the center console ‘cigarette’ lighter (I don’t know what they call them nowadays) & heats up right away. It’s big enough to fit over 1 or 2 people. I’m happy with my purchase (more importantly, my skinny 12-year-old who sits in the back is thrilled)!” stated one customer.

Of course, there were some critical reviews. But, most of them were due to the fact that the “electric car blanket” only worked in the car. One review stated, “I bought this not realizing it was for a vehicle so that is my own fault especially when the photo clearly shows a car plug, however, I have a converter that is recommended for this volt.”

Would You Pay $80K To Stay At This Airbnb? https://www.suggest.com/most-expensive-airbnb-rentals/2611267/ Sun, 09 Jan 2022 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2611267 A mansion yacht in the Atlantic Ocean, off the Florida coast

Luxury Airbnbs make the Bellagio and Waldorf look boring and weak. High-end rentals offer unique stays, scenery, and total privacy. It’s like playing house, except the “house” is an oceanfront mansion.

Of course, luxury comes with a hefty price tag. These Airbnbs are thousands of dollars over budget for many–this writer included. But hey, it’s fun to dream, right?

Plus, those nightly fees don’t seem as bad when split amongst friends. So, the real question is: how amazing does an Airbnb have to be for you to spend ten grand a night?

We rounded up some of the most expensive Airbnb rentals available. Are they way overpriced or worth every penny?

Joshua Tree Folly: An Off-Grid Oasis

Nighttime view of open air bedroom and starry night sky in Joshua Tree
(Hillary/Airbnb)

Unsurprisingly, many of the most expensive Airbnbs are in California. This off-grid oasis plopped in the center of Joshua Tree is no exception.

For $1,040 a night (and about $2,000 in additional fees), you get a tiny sliver of Western paradise. The unassuming cabins hide breathtaking interiors. But the real star of the show is the scenery.

This Airbnb is nestled in the mountains, offering soaring views from every window. Its most attractive feature is an open-air bedroom for stargazing. Don’t worry about that chilly desert air, either—the mattress is heated.

Smart TVs, a rain shower, fire pit, Bocce court, and hammocks are also included with the rental. If you somehow get the urge to leave this Airbnb (but honestly, who would?), it’s just a short drive away from restaurants, galleries, and live music.

This rental can host up to eight people, which would make the final price of a week’s stay $1,155 per person. That breaks down to about $165 per day for each individual. That’s not too shabby for an oasis.

Imagika Malibu: California Dreamhouse

Malibu playhouse yard filled with plants and strange architecture
(Natur/Airbnb)

If you have money to blow in the Golden State, then you could splurge an extra four grand for this abstract funhouse in Malibu. The listing labels this rental as a “castle,” but this home is anything but medieval.

At 10,000 square feet, the rental could easily pass for an art museum. You’re certainly welcome to use all that space, too—this listing allows parties of 25 or more. Is this what being a superstar feels like? Probably.

The Malibu dreamhouse features solariums, firepits, and spacious rooms. Every area is oriented toward an unbelievable view of the Pacific Ocean. Blue stretches all the way to the horizon. And when the sun sets, you’ll always have the best seat in the house.

The experience of this home is vacation enough as it is. And it’s a good thing too because one week’s stay will set you back $13,536. Keep in mind, though, this place can sleep 16 people.

So, each lucky guest would only have to pay $846 for the week. I’m not saying you should fly out to Malibu with your entire crew, but I’m also not not saying that.

Telluride Retreat: An Architectural Masterpiece

External view of residential airbnb home in Telluride
(Jon-Marc and Gigi/Airbnb)

In the mood for something a little more wintry? Look no further than this stunning mountaintop rental in Telluride, Colorado. For $2,500 a night, you can enjoy Rocky Mountain views in a lush aspen forest.

The newly remodeled mountain home features stunning floor-to-ceiling windows. Forget wall decor; you get jaw-dropping views of Wilson Peak instead. (If they look familiar, you’re not mistaken. They’re the same mountains from the Coors Light logo.)

The rental also includes state-of-the-art appliances, including a built-in fridge and in-floor heating that’ll keep your toes toasty on the coldest of Colorado days. And if you need some more warmth, hop in the master suite’s Jacuzzi tub.

You’ll want to make a playlist (or three) for this trip, too. This Airbnb boasts a $10,000 Sonos music system throughout the house. Your travel Bluetooth speaker could never.

Fees included, this rental will set you back $19,243 for a week’s stay. Sure, it’s a royal price—but it’s a royal stay, too.

Floridian Funhouse: Mansion Yacht

A mansion yacht in the Atlantic Ocean, off the Florida coast
(Jay/Airbnb)

Luxury laughs in the face of functionality. When it comes to creating ultra-luxe homes, it isn’t a question of why, but why not. Why not outfit a yacht as a high-end rental? Why not put it on stilts and dock it off a sandbar?

Luckily, the owner of this Floridian mansion yacht couldn’t find a good reason not to. So now, anyone can experience pure decadence for just $10,000 a night. For the cost of a small Midwestern home, you can spend a week in a floating boat.

The yacht’s interior is neutral and modern. But this rental’s best feature is its 360º views. On one side of the rental, you have the Atlantic stretching out for miles. On the other, you look out onto a private sandbar.

The spacious boat has three bedrooms, dining space for 12, and a chef’s kitchen. There’s also a theater and game room, outdoor terrace, and rooftop lounge.

One week in this oceanic getaway costs a whopping $80,720. But don’t worry, you get a $7,000 discount for staying the whole week.

Genius Hack To Easily Sew In A Straight Line, Plus Other Handy Sewing Tricks https://www.suggest.com/how-to-sew-straight-line-sewing-tricks/2611273/ Sat, 08 Jan 2022 17:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2611273 a hand sewing a straight line with hack

My sewing career ended at the age of 12 when my mom asked me to help cut out a simple dress pattern and I somehow turned it into a crime scene. That was the day I discovered that I don’t have any talent when it comes to cutting fabric in a straight line.

It wasn’t until the pandemic—when I was on the hunt for a new hobby and trying to learn new skills—that I revisited sewing. I was happy to find that I made serious improvements on my ability to cut a pattern. I also had the chance to find the best sewing hacks and trickery on the internet.

How To Sew In A Straight Line

I recently stumbled across an absolute genius hack on Reddit that helps you to easily sew in a straight line. And wow, I really wish I would have found this months ago.

One Reddit user shared a photo that featured a hand sewing hack titled “How to sew in a straight line.”

The image simply showed two lines drawn on the sewer’s thumbnail while the thumb and pointer finger held up a hemstitch in progress. Due to the position of the thumb, the two lines served as a straight-line guide for the stitch. Absolutely brilliant!

“Now this is an actual life hack. Very helpful!” one person commented. Another added, “Whoever thought of this is a darn genius.”

The sewing puns started flooding the comments, too. From “It’s sew obvious” to “it really seams effective.” When someone commented that the hack was a “good rule of thumb,” another pointed out that’s exactly what the original post was all about — “a thumb ruler.”

The Easy Way To Thread A Needle

If you have trouble threading those tiny needle holes—either with a machine or hand sewing—there’s a clever trick that can help.  Simply spray the tip of your thread with hairspray so it will stiffen. Then, it will easily slip through the needle’s eye. You’ll be able to push it right through without any fraying.

Need A Hand?

Sometimes, you just need more than two hands during your sewing project, especially when sewing with heavy fabrics like leather and denim. Instead of using pins to hold these larger, bulkier fabrics together, just use binder clips to hold down the fabric. This is an inexpensive option and you’ve probably already got a ton laying around in a junk drawer. But just in case you don’t, you can grab some binder clips here.

Double Check Those Stitches

Just like with the original Reddit post, you can also draw two lines on the outside of your thumb to make sure that your stitches are all even. Simply measure how far apart you need your stitches, and mark that distance with a Sharpie on your thumb or pointer finger so you can measure as you sew.

How To Politely Leave A Holiday Party Early https://www.suggest.com/how-to-leave-holiday-party-early/2606488/ Mon, 13 Dec 2021 11:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2606488 Boring Christmas Party. Bored Girl Using Smartphone Celebrating Xmas

‘Tis the season to eat, drink, and be merry! It may be the most wonderful time of the year to gather with friends and family. But a cozy evening at home with a bottle of wine and a Hallmark special may sound even more appealing. Nevertheless, before you leave early from that holiday soiree, be sure you know how to handle your departure without being branded as a grinch.

If you are planning to leave a holiday party early, here are a few tips that will help you stay off the naughty list.

Bring The Host(ess) A Gift

Whatever the size or type of gathering, bringing the host or hostess a thoughtful gift is always a class act. Not only will it show your appreciation that you made the guest list, but it will certainly help you get invited again. In addition, a small gift of thanks can usually compensate for an early departure.

Give Them A Heads Up

If you’re planning your escape before you even show up to the party, it may be best to let the host or hostess know you will be leaving early. Further, if you tell them in advance, they will not be taken aback like they would’ve been if you dropped that bomb mid-bash. If you’re honest, they’ll probably be more understanding when the time comes for you to slip away.

Don’t Show Up Late

If you plan to leave midway through the celebration, plan to get to the party as soon as it starts. The worst thing you can do is arrive late, stay for a few minutes, and then slip out. As an alternative, offer to arrive early and help with set up. A helpful hand will never go unnoticed, especially with the host or hostess.

Have A Decent Excuse

‘Tis the season to be jolly! Thus, you should have a good reason for calling it quits at a party after a short period of time. While you don’t have to give a dramatic reason–like your house is on fire or your mother is in the emergency room–you should have something more simple lined up. Acceptable excuses can include blaming the babysitter, being ill, the Ring camera notifying you, or needing to walk the dog.

Have A Blast While You’re There

Even if yuletide get-togethers are not everyone’s cup of eggnog, try to make the most of the occasion, especially if you’re planning to leave early. Whether you’re watching the clock, sulking in the corner, or just looking bored, these actions send a clear message to the host that their party is lame. Instead do what you can to spread holiday cheer, and make your presence both a positive and memorable one before you leave.

Irish Goodbye

Although you have the option of saying your goodbyes quietly to the host or hostess, you can also give them an Irish farewell. Despite the fact that it may seem rude to leave a party without saying goodbye to anyone, it may sometimes be the best course of action. Anyone that’s been a host knows how hard it can be to deal with countless hellos and goodbyes while trying to entertain guests.

In some cases, if the host seems overwhelmed, an Irish goodbye may be the best move. Nevertheless, it’s always nice to thank them afterward for the party.

Quaint Hallmark Christmas Movie Filming Locations You Can Actually Visit This Holiday Season https://www.suggest.com/hallmark-christmas-filming-locations-visit-holiday/2604299/ Mon, 06 Dec 2021 23:45:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2604299 Scene from Christmas at the Plaza

While you may believe that “there is no place like home for the holidays,” a Hallmark Christmas movie or two may make you reconsider your normal holiday routine. With magical, wintery locations that resonate with Norman Rockwell’s Christmas greeting cards, Hallmark never disappoints.

But can locations that are so holly and jolly really exist IRL? Soundstages, Christmas props, and fake snow are key ingredients of movie magic. But, the cast and crew still got to film in small towns and gorgeous areas filled with holiday charm. So, before you declare, “We’ve got no place to go…Let it snow, let it snow!” Pack your bags and visit some of the Hallmark Christmas movies’ filming locations for some unforgettable holiday memories.

1. Christmas at Graceland—Graceland, Memphis, Tennessee

Scene form Christmas at Graceland.
(Hallmark Channel)

Come experience an unforgettable Christmas journey through Graceland, Memphis, TN, home of Elvis Presley–the King of Rock and Roll. Christmas at Graceland was the first film to actually film on Elvis Presley’s estate. Despite not being a sequel, Christmas at Graceland: Home for the Holidays was also filmed on location. So, if you’re a fan of both, visiting this destination is a holiday dream come true.

2. Christmas at the Plaza—The Plaza Hotel, New York City

Scene from Christmas at the Plaza
(Hallmark Channel)

No introduction is needed for this iconic New York City hotel, which appeared in numerous movies and TV shows of the past, most notably Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

Based on the decorator and historian in charge of the hotel’s holiday display, it is no surprise that Hallmark chose the Plaza Hotel as the setting for the Christmas at the Plaza film. Anyone who enjoys lobby-hopping for jaw-dropping Christmas decor will undoubtedly agree that the Plaza is the perfect location for that classic Christmas in the city vibe.

3. Christmas Wishes and Mistletoe Kisses—Marietta, Georgia

Scene form Christmas Wishes and Mistletoe Kisses
(Hallmark Channel)

Christmas Wishes & Mistletoe Kisses, a Hallmark film set near Marietta, Georgia, tells the story of a woman whose job is to decorate for an icy cold businessman while keeping the spirit of Christmas alive.

Even though filming for Christmas Wishes & Mistletoe Kisses is over, the city of Marietta is still festive as ever. Visitors can participate in the City of Marietta’s Annual Christmas Tree Lighting and even visit with Santa!

4. Moonlight & Mistletoe—Chester, Vermont

Scene from Moonlight & Mistletoe
(Hallmark Channel)

Moonlight & Mistletoe centers on a young woman who returns to her sleepy New England hometown after her father is injured. Upon arriving home, she learns her father’s business is in financial trouble.

The village of Santaville in Moonlight & Mistletoe is a fictional one; however, Chester, Vermont, where the movie was filmed, lies in the scenic Green Mountains of southern Vermont. The town center is charming and contains historic townhomes and bustling antique shops.

5. A Christmas Wish—Mapleton, Utah

Scene from A Christmas Wish
(Hallmark Channel)

Having been abandoned by her husband, a woman finds herself and her two children homeless and moves cross-country to a small, friendly town. While the snow budget for Hallmark Christmas films is typically high, Desert News reports that real snow fell throughout the production of A Christmas Wish. How’s that for magical?

6. Nashville Christmas Carol—Charlotte, North Carolina and Nashville, Tennessee

Scene from Nashville Christmas Carol
(Hallmark Channel)

Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is an essential part of the holiday season. So it only makes sense that the holiday classic would get a modern twist in Hallmark’s Nashville Christmas Carol.

As a work-obsessed TV producer is forced to work on a country music Christmas special with a man who broke her heart, she loses sight of the season. While the film is set in the heart of the country music capital, most of it was filmed in Charlotte, North Carolina due to tax rebates.

Charlotte Christmas Village is a must-see if you’re in Charlotte for the holidays. Thousands of lights, trees, and other Christmas displays fill the Christmas village for a truly unforgettable holiday walkthrough experience. Additionally, you can visit the Snowtastic Winter Wonderland and the Christmas Tree Lane, and graze on delicious treats served by various European vendors.

7. One Royal Holiday—Woodstock, Connecticut

Scene from One Royal Christmas
(Hallmark Channel)

In One Royal Holiday, a blizzard causes a prince and his mother to become stranded at a cozy inn in Kentsbury, Connecticut. Sparks fly between him and the innkeeper’s daughter, but he is a prince–and she has no idea.

Despite Kentsbury’s portrayal as a quaint Connecticut town, the film was actually filmed in the quiet northeastern corner of Woodstock, Connecticut, and nearby Putnam. Additionally, some scenes were filmed in Hartford, the state capital.

Southern Living describes the bed and breakfast in the film as more than just a Christmas fantasy. Hallmark fans can stay at the inns where the film was shot–The Inn at Woodstock Hill and The Mansion at Bald Hill

8. Christmas In Conway—Wilmington, North

Carolina

Scene from Christmas In Conway
(Hallmark Channel)

When marriage struggles arise, a devoted husband sets out to make his marriage a little more romantic with a perfect Christmas gift. So, he plans to build a ferris wheel in his backyard, a ride he had proposed on years ago.

Christmas in Conway, as well as other Hallmark films such as Christmas in Harmony and U.S.S. Christmas filmed various scenes in and around Wilmington, North Carolina. Some of the sights included St. Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church and the Battleship North Carolina along the riverwalk.

Times Square Will Welcome Back New Years Eve Celebrations And Partygoers–But There’s A Catch https://www.suggest.com/times-square-new-years-eve-celebration-2021/2601988/ Sun, 28 Nov 2021 13:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2601988 New Years Eve Celebration at Time Square in New York City.

Times Square has been home to the country’s biggest New Year’s Eve celebration for over a century. But thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2021 saw a comparably empty Times Square as everyone celebrated in quarantine.

This year, the city is bringing back the festivities in full swing. But before you reach for your noisemakers and champagne, be aware: there’s a catch this time.

How The Times Square Tradition Started

The NYE ball made its first descent from atop One Times Square in 1907. 100 25-watt light bulbs adorned the original iron and wood bulb. An immigrant metalworker named Jacob Starr built the ball; signmaker Artkraft Strauss lowered it.

These days, it’s a much more involved operation. Tens—if not hundreds—of thousands of onlookers gather in the city to watch the main event. Meanwhile, millions more watch remotely across the globe.

The city canceled its tradition only three times throughout its history. Once in 1942 and again in 1943 during World War II. The last, most recent cancellation was in December 2020.

NYC’s Long History With Epidemics

When the time came to make the call on New Year’s 2021, New York City was still reeling from the pandemic. The east coast city was one of the country’s first epicenters of the disease.

In early 2020, NYC was a coronavirus hotspot. The CDC reported over 200,000 cases of COVID-19 within the first three months of the pandemic. In early April, when most of us were only beginning to see COVID in our areas, NYC reported over 800 COVID deaths in one day.

The rest of the country looked on in horror as hospital workers set up makeshift morgues in refrigerated trucks. While this might seem like a pandemic nightmare of the past, it’s still going on in 2021.

2020 wasn’t the first time the Big Apple reckoned with an epidemic, either. Almost exactly a century earlier, the city nearly crumbled under the weight of the Spanish Influenza pandemic.

Thus, in light of the city’s long history, Mayor Bill de Blasio’s recent announcement seems all the more logical.

Ringing In The New Year Responsibly

De Blasio announced on November 16th that Times Square will be open for New Year’s 2022 celebrations. “We are proud to announce the Times Square wonderful celebration, the ball drop, everything, coming back full strength, the way we love it.”

“Hundreds of thousands of people there to celebrate,” the mayor continues, “we can finally get back together again. It’s going to be amazing. It’s going to be a joy for the city.”

The catch? All NYE attendees must be fully vaccinated. Partygoers will have to show proof of vaccination and a valid photo ID. The city already highly recommends everyone wear a mask in public, indoor settings regardless of whether it’s explicitly required.

This policy piggybacks off of the Key to NYC campaign, which started on August 17th, 2021. Many bars, gyms, theaters, and restaurants already require proof of vaccination.

However, this new policy might seem like the ultimate buzzkill for the thousands of tourists visiting NYC to party. But in typical NYC spirit, the locals aren’t too worried about what out-of-towners think.

How To Score 77% Off An All-Inclusive Resort https://www.suggest.com/how-to-score-deals-all-inclusive-resorts/2596024/ Mon, 01 Nov 2021 10:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2596024 Woman in a sunhat relaxing in a pool at an all-inclusive resort.

After the traumatizing last few years, we could all definitely benefit from a vacation. In particular, having a tropical getaway spent comfortably lounged by the pool, drink in hand, away from the news and day to day bustle sounds superb. Enter in: all-inclusive resorts.

Without the extensive planning of what to do each day (as well as figuring out COVID protocols at each spot), all-inclusives resorts are the perfect place to unwind and decompress. Yet depending on the location, resort, and traveling days, these vacas can get a little pricey–unless you know how to find a good deal.

How To Get A Major Discount

We recently stumbled across @hacks.travel on TikTok, a social channel from a former flight attendant who has tons of hacks and tips for solo female travelers as well as couples. These tips include how to book cheap flights, find cheap hotel rooms, and score great deals for spontaneous weekend trips.

In particular, her video for 77% off an all-inclusive resort to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic definitely piqued our interest. First, she states that she scored an all-inclusive resort for $675 per person in Punta Cana to stay an entire week. Sounds too good to be true, but is it? Here’s how she did it.

Step one consists of going to agoda.com. Step two is to follow the prompts and enter in dates, location (Punta Cana), and the number of adults. Agoda.com gives you a list of all the discounted options. Instead of comparing all of the options, she states, “I already found [a] hotel at 77% off.” The resort she found was Barcelo Bavaro Beach All-Inclusive Resort, an adults-only spot which has stunning views and private beach access. Deals can change quickly, so this particular offer may no longer be applicable. And the site has deals on all-inclusive resorts all over the world.

A quick tip: changing your date range can have significant impact on your results, so if you can be flexible with your travel dates, you’re more likely to find a better deal. But you need to be ready to book as these deals come and go quick! Luckily, deals are popping up daily, so you can snag a great price whenever you’re ready.

Why There Are No Mosquitoes At Disney World https://www.suggest.com/why-there-are-no-mosquitoes-at-disney-world/2593704/ Fri, 15 Oct 2021 10:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2593704 Entrance Arch of Walt Disney World

When it comes to theme parks, Disney has a reputation for creating the happiest and most magical places on Earth. This is especially true for the company’s Mecca in central Florida—Walt Disney World.

What began as Walt’s “Florida Project” back in the mid-1960s is now one of the most popular tourist destinations on the planet. But this didn’t happen by accident.

The story of how Walt Disney created his Florida park is the stuff of legend. He bought land in secret, petitioned the Florida legislature to create a special district with its own Disney government, and he even hired the former governor of the Panama Canal Zone to create the park’s “Mosquito Surveillance Program.”

Yes, you read that correctly. Despite being built “in the middle of the Florida swamps,” Walt Disney World doesn’t have mosquitoes. So, what is the real story behind this Disney Park secret? Why are there no mosquitoes at Disney World?

Florida Has A ‘Mosquito Season’

If you’re not from the south, you might not be familiar with the mosquito issues that many residents in southern states have to deal with every year. Mosquito problems are common in states like Louisiana, Georgia, and Texas. But by far, the worst state for mosquitoes is Florida.

As Inside the Magic points out, Florida has a ton of swamp land. And the state’s “mosquito season” pretty much runs the entire year. The worst months are in the spring and summer, when warm temperatures combine with frequent rain. These conditions allow the mosquito population to grow extremely fast.

Of course, the spring and summer months are the height of Disney’s tourist season. If you and your family head to central Florida during that time of the year, packing plenty of mosquito repellant is a must. After all, mosquito-borne diseases like the West Nile Virus, the Zika virus, and malaria can come from a single bite.

But once you step inside the confines of Walt Disney World, your mosquito bite worries will instantly fade away. Who should park goers thank for this? The answer is Retired Army Major General William E. Potter, or “Joe” Potter for short.

Who Was Joe Potter?

Walt Disney opened his first theme park—Southern California’s Disneyland—in 1955. It was a huge success, which prompted Walt to start thinking about doing the same thing on the East Coast. But the subsequent sprawl of trashy businesses around Disneyland made Walt realize he needed to change his approach. He needed a larger piece of land for his second park, so he could control what was around it.

With the help of lawyers who had no idea who their client was, Walt purchased the 27,000 acres that make up Disney World for $5 million. At the time, the property was nothing more than hot, humid swampland and orange groves.

After his purchase, Walt started campaigning for control of the land (which he eventually got). He also met Retired Army Major General William E. Potter—AKA “Joe” Potter—at the 1964 World’s Fair.

Potter was an engineering expert and graduate of MIT who had worked as the governor of the Panama Canal Zone—an area notorious for its mosquitoes. While working that job, Potter learned all about pest control and became a mosquito expert. Walt decided to hire him on the spot to be in charge of mosquito control for his new “Florida Project.”

Joe’s Techniques To Get Rid Of Mosquitos

Joe Potter brought several techniques to Walt Disney World to get rid of the mosquitoes. But his goal wasn’t to commit pest genocide on the adults. Instead, it was to prevent the mosquitoes from getting into the park in the first place.

To do this, Potter knew he needed to target the larvae. So, he decided to make Walt Disney World an inhospitable place for mosquitoes to lay their eggs.

No Stagnant Water

Potter knew that mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing, stagnant water because it’s the perfect breeding ground. So, his first step was to get rid of standing water by draining the swamp around the Magic Kingdom so he could eliminate the pests.

Then, when Walt Disney World was being built, Potter made sure that the park used flowing water. He oversaw the construction of drainage ditches throughout the property that would remove any water before it could pool in different areas and become stagnant.

To this day, these ditches are known as “Joe Ditches” and they are still in use at Walt Disney World. If they look for it, guests will see that water at the park is constantly moving. There are no areas of standing water in Walt Disney World, which makes it almost impossible for mosquitoes to lay their eggs.

Unique Building And Garden Designs

Another method used to prevent mosquitoes at Disney World was intentional design. According to Disney historian and Top Disney author Christopher Lucas, the buildings and gardens were designed to counter mosquitoes.

“They made every building there curved, or designed in a way so there’d be no place for the water to catch and sit there,” Lucas told Reader’s Digest.

The park’s landscapers also prioritize plants and flowers that won’t let water pool. They use plants with leaves that won’t harbor the stagnant water and instead allow the water to roll off and keep moving.

Joe also directed groundskeepers to stock the ponds on the property with goldfish, minnows, and “mosquito fish” that eat mosquito larvae regularly.

No Pesticides, Garlic Spray Only

Walt Disney didn’t want any pesticides in his park, and he made that clear to Potter. To adapt to this request, the retired general used only natural insect repellants. Most notably, he started the use of liquid garlic spray—which still continues today.

Since mosquitoes can’t stand the smell of garlic, Disney workers spray it all around the park in small enough amounts that visitors don’t notice. But the mosquitoes stay far away.

This Is The Money-Saving Secret Las Vegas Hotel Owners Don’t Want You To Know About https://www.suggest.com/las-vegas-hack-hotel-owners-dont-want-you-to-know/2571927/ Mon, 30 Aug 2021 17:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2571927 Image of Las Vegas

Tipping is a common practice in the US. Sometimes we tip because we know the person doesn’t receive a living wage. Sometimes we tip better because of exceptional service. We tip our waitresses, hairstylists, massage therapists, food delivery services, and more.

But, should we be tipping hotel staff, other than the bellhop and housekeeping staff? Could we be getting a lot more out of our vacation with one simple trick?

Read on to learn about one simple hack for your next trip to Vegas to reap some serious perks.

The $20 Sandwich Trick

A recent TikTok video that explains and then attempts the “$20 sandwich trick” has gained over 200k views.

Basically, you sandwich a $20 bill in between your credit card and your ID when checking into your hotel. When you’re handing over your cards, you politely ask if there are any free upgrades available. Sometimes this can result in a room upgrade at a very discounted rate.

Depending on availability and the season in which you’re visiting Vegas, it may actually work. However, we don’t recommend trying this during the busy season on a weekend! The reviews are mixed, and a lot of commenters on the video called it a bribe.

However, according to 20dollartrick.com, a website dedicated to all things Vegas and the “trick,” it works at a surprisingly high rate. Ceasars Palace has a 92% success rate, Excalibur has an 84% success rate, and Bellagio has a 75% success rate. So, even in Vegas, the success rate varies, but it could be worth the gamble. The website breaks down the success rate of most hotels on the strip and shares success stories on their blog.

It Doesn’t Hurt To Try

Many commenters on the TikTok video went on to say that the front desk will return the tip if they are unable to comp any rooms or services. Others say they weren’t so lucky and were out $20. Our thoughts are, it doesn’t hurt to try.

You can even forgo the $20 tip and just ask for any discounts or upgrades, as they may be able to still accommodate you.

And if if hotel staff are unable to upgrade your room, they may be able to comp other services. In Vegas, the more you play, the more freebies you may receive. Drink vouchers, merch, rooms with a view, and Vegas shows may all be up for grabs. So, next time you’re in Vegas, try it out! It may be worth your while.

The Policies And Restrictions In Place To Take A Cruise Right Now https://www.suggest.com/what-to-consider-if-youre-taking-a-cruise-ship-soon/2570343/ Mon, 23 Aug 2021 12:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2570343 Woman on a cruise ship

“I have now seen sucrose beaches and water a very bright blue. I have seen an all-red leisure suit with flared lapels. I have smelled suntan lotion spread over 2,100 pounds of hot flesh. I have been addressed as ‘Mon’ in three different nations. I have seen 500 upscale Americans dance the Electric Slide. I have seen sunsets that looked computer-enhanced. I have (very briefly) joined a conga line.” ~ David Foster Wallace, A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again

In his widely praised and hilarious essay “A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again,” in a collection of essays by the same title, David Foster Wallace chronicles seven days spent aboard a Caribbean cruise. As suggested by the title, the result is a raucous and biting account of the supposedly enjoyable experience but ultimately, for Wallace, a week filled with despair.

You might share Wallace’s feelings about cruises. In which case, no need to continue any further in this article (unless, of course, you’d like to pull a Wallace and try it out for an experiment or creative endeavor).

If, on the other hand, you’re a big ol’ fan of cruises, then there’s some must-know info if you plan on embarking on an oceanic adventure any time soon.

Things Have Changed—And That Includes Cruises

There are few aspects of our lives that have not been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our work lives, social lives, grocery shopping, travel, health care and countless other things have been altered—sometimes dramatically—as a result of the coronavirus. And the cruise industry is no exception.

Most of us probably—at least faintly—recall the cruise ship that made headlines around the world at the very start of the pandemic.

Image of drink on cruise ship
(Oleksandr Lysenko / Shutterstock)

The Diamond Princess is a cruise ship owned and operated by Princess Cruises, and registered in the United Kingdom. On February 1, 2020, an 80-year-old passenger who had recently been in Hong Kong tested positive for coronavirus. By February 4, the whole ship was placed in quarantine, with the passengers restricted to their private cabins. Even with the rapid and effective quarantine, about 700 passengers ultimately tested positive for the virus (out of 3,711 people on board).

The Diamond Princess was one of the earliest examples of just how easily and rapidly COVID-19 can spread. And it was also an early signal that the cruise industry would not be able to continue on as usual during the pandemic. So cruises were essentially no more for the duration of 2020 and into much of 2021.

This summer, we’ve finally started to see the return of the cruise industry with a variety of companies resuming service. But that still doesn’t mean that cruises look like they used to. The pandemic has changed the industry—possibly for a long time to come—and there are new rules and restrictions in place in an attempt to keep the experience as safe as possible.

What To Expect On Board A Cruise This Year

Precautions definitely vary from cruise line to cruise line. But there are some themes or commonalities emerging as the cruise industry ramps back up.

According to NBC News, “Negative Covid tests or proof of vaccination for all passengers and crew members are the most common prerequisites operators have for boarding and moving about ships unmasked. Escalated protocols include the e-Mist electrostatic spraying system, which Uniworld River Cruises uses to disinfect its ships, and the labs that Viking Cruises built on its oceangoing ships (and onshore for river cruises) to facilitate processing the daily PCR tests all passengers are required to take.”

The cruise industry is much like other public or group activities—like schools, workplaces or churches—that are taking steps to prevent the spread. For some cruise lines, you’ll have to provide both proof of vaccination and a negative COVID test. For some, this may seem extreme. But that’s where the Diamond Princess provides an excellent cautionary tale: if there’s anywhere that a contagious virus spreads easily, it’s on board a crowded cruise.

But vaccinations and tests aren’t all that certain cruise lines are asking for. Carnival Cruise Line, for example, implemented the following guidelines as of August 7, 2021:

“We strongly encourage all guests to wear face masks when indoors, particularly guests who are unvaccinated, including children under the age of 12 who should wear masks in public areas, except when eating or drinking,” the website reads. “All guests age 2 and older will be required to wear face masks in elevators and in designated indoor entertainment areas, all retail shops, and in the casino, except when eating or drinking.”

Moral of the story is, expect to be masked—or at least strongly encouraged to be masked—on board many cruise ships in the coming months.

There are also a variety of other requirements or changes that have popped up, including alterations to restrictions around on-land activities and differences in how buffets or on-board lines now work.

Check with whichever cruise line you’re considering booking through for more details before your trip.

A Supposedly Fun Thing You Can Now Do Again

The good news for cruise lovers is that the cruise industry is back at it. All it takes are some simple precautions that most of us are (hopefully) taking anyways to get us all through this challenging time.

So, whether your future cruise adventure is full of fun or despair, do your research ahead of time, be kind and courteous and take the necessary steps to protect yourself and others.

How You’re Getting Tricked Into Paying More For Your Vacation https://www.suggest.com/how-to-save-the-most-on-your-vacation/2570440/ Sat, 21 Aug 2021 12:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2570440 Image of maps and travel plans

A vacation can be a relaxing time to recharge and reconnect with your partner. They can also be a time to make memories with your family. Depending on the type of vacation you take, you may come back rested and relaxed or more exhausted than when you left home. Either way, vacations are typically worth it for the new experiences they provide.

However, before you even pack your first bag, booking your vacation can be a hassle in and of itself.

Here are some ways travel websites can trick you into paying more for your vacation than you should. Travel websites are businesses, after all.

Not The Yummy Kind Of Cookies

Cookies track your digital footprint. Websites use cookies to see what you’re into so they can target you with ads. They’ll then push items they believe you will buy. This is why when you look something up on one computer in your home, an ad might pop up for the same product on your phone later.

Rumor has it that airline booking sites can see that you’re checking prices for a flight. Then they may bump up the price on the flight in the future. However, others refute this claim. They say the price bumps have more to do with demand, regular price fluctuation and attempting to book closer to the departure date.

Clearing your computer’s cookies could be a step to getting the best deals. Clearing cookies will basically reset your browsing history and make the site think you are a new customer, possibly giving you a better deal.

Using Google Flights can also help you track the prices of flights and alert you to deals. Finding a sticking with an airline you like and using their loyalty program will help you save money, too. These programs can include free flights, upgrades and other travel perks.

Sneaky, Hidden Fees

Hidden fees are ways that sites recover “discounted” room or flight prices. Sometimes they hook you with an amazing deal on a hotel room or flight. However, when you check out, the price will jump exponentially.

Therefore, we recommend booking your room with the hotel directly. A hotel’s loyalty program can offer you perks like discounts, room upgrades and points for spa experiences, meals and even cocktails. Even without a hotel loyalty program, if you call a hotel directly to book (and ask for any discounts) they may oblige. It never hurts to ask!

Although Airbnb and VRBO typically have rooms for less, there are still fees tacked on when you check out. However, they are still typically cheaper than hotels. These rooms can be a great option if you’re more comfortable in a home instead of a hotel. Finding a highly reviewed Airbnb or VRBO can make a vacation feel more relaxed and cozy.

Shopping around for hotels, flights and other travel experiences can be annoying, but, if you’re a budget-shopper, it’ll probably be well worth it! And while taking the time to reach out about benefits, discounts and perks may feel uncomfortable, you may be surprised with what they offer!

10 Hidden Gem National Parks You’re Probably Missing Out On https://www.suggest.com/10-hidden-gem-national-parks-youre-probably-missing-out-on/2715324/ Fri, 20 Aug 2021 17:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/10-hidden-gem-national-parks-youre-probably-missing-out-on/2715324/ Wild River Range

National parks are a great destination for a fun and invigorating family vacation. Some feature acres and acres of gorgeous landscapes to explore via hiking, skiing, and cycling. Others offer activities like rock climbing and kayaking.

But during peak season, the nation’s top parks can get pretty crowded. You might find yourself waiting in a long line for the bathroom or searching for a parking space at a trailhead. There’s also the possibility that locations and activities are fully booked, and your family will miss out completely.

Luckily, there are plenty of alternatives to the best and most crowded national parks that are just as beautiful and offer tons of fun outdoor activities—but they leave out the crowds. Here are 10 crowd-free alternatives to America’s best national parks.

10. Lassen National Park

Lassen Volcanic National Park
(Engel Ching/Shutterstock.com)

Instead of visiting the crowded Yellowstone National Park, consider Northern California’s Lassen National Park. According to Tripadvisor, Lassen is nestled within the belly of an ancient volcano, just like Yellowstone.

The cone of that 11,000-foot tall volcano collapsed hundreds of thousands of years ago and left behind a two-mile-wide caldera known as Lassen Peak, which hikers love to summit. But the park offers so much more.

There’s the three-mile Bumpass Hell Trail for hiking and Manzanita Lake for water-based fun. The park also features boiling springs, steam vents, and bubbling mud pots. And, if you explore the park in your car, there are a number of roadside attractions.

9. Cumberland Gap National Historical Park

Instead of visiting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, consider driving two hours north to the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. With over 24,000 acres, it’s one of the largest national parks in America.

Cumberland Gap features more than 20 limestone caves, 80 miles of hiking trails, 160 campsites, multiple streams, old pioneer buildings, and plenty of dense forests. However, less than a million people visit the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park each year. Compared to more than 12 million visitors at Great Smoky.

8. Great Basin National Park

(Arlene Waller/Shutterstock.com)

Swap out a trip to Yosemite National Park for a visit to the Great Basin National Park in Nevada, one of the least-visited national parks in America. Just like Yosemite, the Great Basin has extreme elevation changes, from the low desert at 5,000 feet to peaks at 13,000 feet.

The Great Basin has its own ancient tree species—the 5,000-year-old Bristlecone Pines. Other highlights include the Lehman Caves, the Alpine Lakes Loop, and Wheeler Peak. You can choose to summit Wheeler Peak with an 8.6-mile hike. Or, you can opt for the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive.

7. Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Park

The Grand Canyon is a popular vacation destination, but it’s not the only canyon in America. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Colorado also exists because of a river that’s been flowing for thousands of years. Black Canyon got its name because it is so steep and narrow, there are parts of it that get only about a half-hour of sunlight each day.

The hike to the river is a serious workout, with the most popular route dropping 1,800 feet in just a mile and a half over loose terrain. There are other trails, though, that aren’t as physically challenging, but still offer plenty of stunning views.

6. Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Guadalupe Mountains National Park
(ShuPhoto/Shutterstock.com)

Joshua Tree National Park in California is another popular tourist destination. But a fantastic crowd-free alternative is Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Texas. Home to four of the largest mountains in the state, this park features its own unique desert ecosystem.

You can summit the highest point in Texas with a hike to Guadalupe Peak, and witness the steep cliff sides of Devil’s Hall. If you visit in the fall, you’ll also get to see some pretty incredible colors.

5. Cobscook Shores

Instead of visiting the crowded Acadia National Park, head two hours northeast to Lubec, Maine and visit the chain of parks at Cobscook Shores. All of these gorgeous parks are easily accessible by driving, or you can bike the country roads.

Cobscook Shores features eight miles of biking and walking trails plus 12 miles of rocky shoreline to explore. There are also five backcountry campsites that are totally free. Just a short drive away, you’ll find Cobscook Bay State Park and Quoddy Head State Park, which both offer camping spots and great hiking trails.

4. North Cascades National Park

Cascades National Park
(Pierre Leclerc/Shutterstock.com)

Glacier National Park in Montana is absolutely spectacular. But, you can also find plenty of glaciers, incredible hikes, and scenic drives in Washington’s North Cascades National Park.

This park features more glaciers than you’ll find anywhere else in America outside of Alaska, and it has tons of camping and hiking options. It also has lakes for canoes and kayaking. If you visit between June and September—when the snow has melted—the trails are easily accessible even at the highest elevations.

3. Wind River Range

(Peter Silverman Photo/Shutterstock.com)

Not far from the glorious Grand Teton National Park is a lesser-known section of the Continental Divide called the Wind River Range. It features Wyoming’s highest point—Gannett Peak—as well as seven of the ten largest glaciers in the United States.

However, Wind River Range is for those who love to rough it. It doesn’t have the amenities like the Grand Teton—you won’t even have cell service or access to bathrooms. But if you’re looking for a rugged adventure, there are more than 600 trails in the area to explore and some of the country’s most beautiful peaks to see.

2. Capitol Reef National Park

Capitol Reef National Park
(TomKli/Shutterstock.com)

The red rocks of Zion National Park near Springdale, Utah are absolutely gorgeous. But there are so many other parks in the state to visit, and they aren’t nearly as crowded. Instead of Zion, consider Capitol Reef National Park near the tiny town of Torrey.

This park features a 25-mile scenic drive to a geologic formation known as Waterpocket Fold, rounded domes of the Navajo Formation that rise up to 1,400 feet tall, three waterfalls at Sulphur Creek, and 15 trails to explore the natural rock arch Hickman Bridge and the monoliths at Cathedral Valley.

1. Indian Peaks Wilderness

Indian Peaks Wilderness
(Nina B/Shutterstock.com)

Instead of visiting Rocky Mountain National Park, you can avoid the crowds and head to the Indian Peaks Wilderness, which actually borders the Rocky Mountain National Park to the north.

You’re still in the Rocky Mountains, and that means you can enjoy hiking, fishing, and camping. The 4.1-mile Long Lake Trail is an easy hike for visitors of all ages and fitness levels. You also have the option of spending the day on the 15-mile trail to Lone Eagle Peak, which features incredible views of the mountains and Mirror Lake. Plus several gorgeous waterfalls.

You don’t have to go to the most popular destinations to enjoy America’s National Parks. There are some hidden gems that are great alternatives, and you can easily avoid the crowds.

How To Conquer NYC On A Budget: From Cheap Broadway Tickets To Inexpensive Cocktails https://www.suggest.com/how-to-travel-to-nyc-on-a-budget/2567976/ Thu, 05 Aug 2021 12:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2567976 Image of woman walking through NYC.

I’m a diehard thrifter. Most of my wardrobe, furniture and decor are secondhand. Thrifting is cheap. The used finds have more character, and did I mention it’s cheap?

My penny-pinching doesn’t stop at clothes and home goods, either. When I travel, I’m constantly looking for ways to save money.

So, when I recently traveled to New York City, a notoriously expensive tourist destination, I had my thrifting work cut out for me. Saving money in NYC can be tricky, but it’s not impossible.

Here’s how to visit the Big Apple without spending a big fortune.

Park Your Car Outside Of The City

My biggest piece of NYC travel advice is to leave your car somewhere else. Affordable parking rates do exist, but they’re rare. And if you happen to find an open meter on the street, then go ahead and buy a lottery ticket too, lucky duck.

In reality, you’ll likely have to use a parking garage. Nightly fees can cost anywhere from $40 to over $100. Assuming you’re not driving to NYC for a one-day visit, those parking costs will quickly add up.

Instead, I recommend parking your car in New Jersey and catching a train into the city via New Jersey Transit. Three days in an NJ parking garage will cost around $80, and a train ticket into the city costs around $15.

Not only are you saving a ton of money, but you’re also avoiding the hassle of driving in NYC traffic. You don’t want to have to deal with that, and the locals don’t want you to, either.

Don’t Be Afraid Of The Subway

If you’re used to getting places by car, you might be inclined to rely on taxis, Ubers and Lyfts. However, these rates can skyrocket depending on surge pricing and the length of your trip.

At $2.75 per ride, the subway is much more affordable, albeit a little confusing for first-timers. Download the Citymapper app to take the guesswork out of navigating the NYC train lines.

Citymapper offers multiple route options and step-by-step instructions to get you to the station, on the right train and to your destination stress-free.

Currently, all NYC public transit requires you to wear a mask while riding. If you’re still concerned about COVID-19, double-mask, socially distance and bring a travel-size bottle of hand sanitizer with you.

Image of woman getting in a NYC subway.
(eldar nurkovic / Shutterstock)

Get Savvy With Your Food (And Drink) Selections

One of my favorite parts about traveling is trying new food. And with all the types of cuisine, restaurants and bars NYC has to offer, you’re never going to be lacking in food or drink options.

However, buying three meals a day (plus drinks and snacks) add up. For this reason, I like to pack a reusable water bottle and on-the-go snacks.

I simply drop a few snacks and a water bottle into my purse before heading out for the day. Then, when the “it’s 2 p.m. and I’ve walked 5,000 miles today” hangriness sets in, I don’t have to splurge on whatever food happens to be closest to me.

Additionally, look up restaurants before you’re hangry in the middle of the city. Check menu prices, food options and locales beforehand so you’re not stuck settling on what’s easiest (and potentially the most expensive).

And if you’re in the city to have a cocktail or two, I have two words: happy hour.

If You Want To Shop, Shop Smart

I have plenty of friends who feel no trip is complete without a shopping spree. They come home loaded with trinkets and souvenirs (and a much lighter wallet).

I encourage you to go to the city and enjoy it without excess spending. Take photos for memories, window shop down 5th Avenue, but don’t feel obliged to buy a $40 Statue of Liberty bobblehead just because it happens to be in front of you.

If you intend to shop, try out some of these thrifty discount stores instead of national retailers. (You have an H&M at home.) For souvenirs, head to Chinatown.

Walking through Chinatown is an NYC must-do in and of itself. But you can also haggle your way to a much more affordable price for that bobblehead than in, say, Times Square.

Avoid Certain Neighborhoods (There Are Lots Of Others)

Speaking of Times Square, you can also save money by avoiding certain neighborhoods. Times Square, Midtown and other tourist-heavy NYC locales will gouge prices because they know they aren’t catering to locals.

You’ll get just as much of a New York experience in the Lower East Side or Greenwich Village than you would in Times Square.

It’s also not a bad idea to find university neighborhoods. Restaurants and stores in these areas cater to college students (read: broke), so you’re more likely to find things to do on a budget.

Hunt Down Freebies And Discounts

Contrary to popular belief, spending $300 a day is not required to have fun in NYC.

There are loads of free events to partake in around the city, particularly in the warmer weather months. These major attractions also offer free or donation-based admission.

If you’re a Broadway baby looking to see a show, try waiting in line at a TKTS booth. TKTS booths sell same-day tickets for up to 50% off. The lines are intense, but so is your love of Broadway, so it evens out.

Ultimately, everyone’s travel style is different. If shelling out big bucks is your thing, then go for it! But don’t let money deter you from a vacay—if my penny-pinching self could find ways to have a good time in NYC, you can, too.

Where Is The Over $26 Billion For The Tokyo Olympics Coming From And Where Is It Going? https://www.suggest.com/everything-about-the-26-billion-dollars-being-spent-on-the-olympics/2565351/ Tue, 27 Jul 2021 17:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2565351 Image of Olympic Games.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics are already the most expensive summer games ever–and they haven’t even happened yet.

Thanks to the pandemic, the event was pushed back a year and that postponement cost $2.8 billion. But that’s just a small percentage of the estimated $26 billion the games will reportedly cost when everything is said and done.

So, where is that money coming from and where is it going?

The Costs Added Up Quickly

When the International Olympic Committee awarded Tokyo with the 2020 games back in 2013, the estimated cost was $7.3 billion. But in the weeks leading up to the games, experts predicted the event would cost approximately $26 billion.

According to Business Insider, the money problem began with the venues.

First, It Was The Venues

The National Stadium is the site of the opening and closing ceremonies, track and field events and soccer.  But it was a financial disaster before they laid down the first brick.

According to WalletHub, Japan hired star architect Zaha Hadid to design the stadium. But when the costs quickly went over budget and hit $2 billion, they scrapped that plan.

The second version—designed by Kengo Kuma—was a 68,000 seat stadium made from a mix of steel and wood from every one of Japan’s 47 prefectures. The cost for this version of the project ended up costing $1.4 billion.

But construction costs didn’t end there.

Now, Construction Costs Just Continue To Rise

In Japan, a lot of construction material is imported and prices have risen significantly in the past few years. This is evident in the various contraction projects for the Olympics.

The cost to build the gymnastics center was estimated to be $81 million. But when it was completed, the actual cost was more than $200 million, even though the design never changed.

But the venue costs don’t end there. The plaza for badminton and pentathlon will cost $330 million, the aquatic center for swimming and diving will be $540 million, the volleyball arena will hit $320 million and the canoe and kayak center is estimated to be $65 million. And that’s just to name a few.

According to Bent Flyvbjerg, Management Professor at Oxford University, they can’t even find a single Olympic project that stayed on budget.

The Olympic Village Didn’t Help

Granted, cost overruns for the Olympics are actually pretty common. But a number of factors made Japan’s expenditures worse.

In addition to expensive imports, the rising construction costs are also the result of a serious labor shortage in that sector of the Japanese economy. This is part of the reason as to why building 21 structures in the Olympic village costed more than $2 billion.

While on the topic of the Olympic Village, the structures built were supposed to be offset by selling apartments to the general public after the games. But instead, those buildings sat empty for almost an entire year while the Japanese government decided whether or not they would hold the games at all. That postponement cost another $1.6 billion in operational costs for the Olympic Village.

During that time, Tokyo kept up maintenance on all venues, ramped up security and paid to rent the Olympic Village for a year instead of a month.

COVID Precautions Aren’t Cheap, Either

The additional cost of increased COVID precautions have also added to the big money number. With hundreds of doctors and nurses being hired and medical supplies being bought, the Olympic’s added another $900 million to their overall spending total.

And We Can’t Forget About The Opening Ceremony

Another major cost of the games is the opening ceremony, which is estimated to cost $118 million. Why? Well, because we obviously need a laser light show, fireworks, performers and everything else to make a big splash.

And get this. Even with everyone tuning in to watch the opening ceremony, the city of Tokyo won’t get any share of the valuable broadcast rights. That money goes to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) instead.

Who’s Paying For All Of This?

At this point, you may be wondering who is even paying for all of this. Well, the financial burden of hosting the Olympics mostly falls on the host country’s taxpayers.

According to the South China Morning Post, Japanese taxpayers will fund about 55% of the total cost. The rest is privately funded through sponsorships, ticket sales and a donation from the IOC.

But, Ticket Sales Are At A low

However, ticket sales aren’t looking too promising.

The games usually bring in an expected $850 million, but according to Reuters, that number has now been cut in half.

This is partly due to the cancellation of warm up events. The warm up events usually bring in millions of dollars, but due to COVID, the warm up events were canceled and zero tickets were sold. And when it comes to the actual games, the amount of tickets allowed to be sold will be limited.

So, who’s going to cover the overall cost now?

Japanese Citizens Want To Call It Quits

With this large cost full of unknowns, polls show that the majority of Japanese citizens want the games canceled or postponed. But the Olympic Committee, broadcasters and many corporations rather continue to move forward.

So, I guess we will just have to wait and see. Go team, USA!

How To Plan A Last Minute Vacation You Didn’t Prepare For This Summer https://www.suggest.com/how-to-plan-a-last-minute-vacation/2565342/ Sat, 24 Jul 2021 10:15:00 +0000 https://www.suggest.com/?p=2565342 Woman packing.

It’s no secret that planning a trip at the last minute isn’t the most budget-friendly vacation strategy. When you’re short on time, hunting for a bargain is rarely at the top of the priority list.

Here are some tips and tricks on how to plan a vacation on the fly this summer without breaking the bank.

Let Someone Else Do The Flight Work

You may not have the time or patience to scour every corner of the internet for last-minute flight deals. But there are people who actually get paid to do it all day long, and they are an amazing resource.

Follow Secret Flying, The Flight Deal, Fareness, Hopper and Airfarewatchdog on social media, sign up for their newsletters and download the apps. This is one of the best ways to find amazing last-minute travel deals, even if you don’t know where you want to go.

Pay Attention To Flight Days

On that note, if you choose to book your own flight, try to buy your airline tickets on a Sunday or a Tuesday. Airlines like to discount their flight fares for later in the week on these two days.

Also, if you choose to travel on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday, it’s much easier to avoid premium rates, since business travelers typically fly Mondays through Fridays.

Another great flight booking tip is to consider booking separate one-way flights on two different aircraft carriers. This can sometimes offer a better value than booking a round-trip flight.

Use An App For Hotel Deals

If you need spur-of-the-moment lodging, hotel apps will be your best friends.

To book up to one week ahead of travel, use HotelTonight for everything from basic to luxe accommodations. Their special GeoRates target users based on their GPS location. Plus, some of the best deals are only available on the app.

One Night offers same-day bookings for spontaneous stays at unbeatable rates. They work with dozens of luxury properties to offer you the best last-minute deals. The app also shares insider tips about what to see, do, taste and try during your stay.

Don’t forget AirBnB, either, because you might be able to find an entire apartment to stay in for the same price as a budget motel room. Many AirBnB hosts will even drop the price of their listings at the last minute.

Get Creative With Food

Snagging a last minute reservation at your vacation spot’s most popular restaurant is probably not going to happen. But that doesn’t mean you have to settle for drive-thru food. Instead, sign up for services like Traveling Spoon or EatWith.

These sites connect you with local families or chefs before you go, and when you arrive at your destination, they will invite you over for a meal.

Traveling Spoon allows you to book a private meal with a fantastic home chef, while EatWith offers “intimate culinary experiences led by passionate hosts and chefs that will take your breath away.”

Take A Gamble

Some of the best travel deals can pop up at the last minute on sites like Hotwire and Priceline. The downside is that these deals are typically for unnamed hotel properties and car rentals, so those details aren’t revealed until you commit to your purchase. But if you’re willing to take a gamble, you might pay 50 or 60% less than published rates.

The same can be said for tropical weather. If you’re willing to take a risk and head to Cancún, Puerto Rico or other Caribbean islands during hurricane season, you might find an unbeatable last minute deal. To be on the safe side, travel insurance would be a great purchase.

Last minute travel can be exciting and spontaneous – and you don’t need to break the bank to do it. If you’re willing to be flexible, you might just find yourself enjoying a last-minute champagne vacation on a beer budget.
